Abstract:Objective:To identify the compositions of essential oil from Chimonanthus nitens Oliv.Method:The es- sential oil was extracted from Chimonanthus nitens Oliv.through steam distillation method according to1995 edition of Chinese pharmacopoeia.GC/MS was used for the determination of essential oil.Results:41 among the 62 separa- ted constituents were identified,which constituted 97.92% of the total amount,the contents of 11 compounds were over 1%.Eucalyptol was the richest(50.53%),other 10 important components were characterized to be terpenes. Conclusion:The experiment conducted in our laboratory with the essential oil show that it is a simple,rapid,efi- cient,inexpensive and with good repeatability and recovery.It is excellent to separate and determine the component of essential oil from Chimonanthus nitens Oliv.,and offer reference value in the development and application study of the volatile oil.

Abstract:Hydrodistilled leaf oils of Pistacia chinensis Bunge from five locations in China were analyzed using GC/MS. A total of 58 compounds was identified in the oils, and a relatively high variation in their contents was found. The major compounds include β-phellandrene (0.54–53.86%), α-pinene (4.74–54.44%), β-pinene (0.49–42.90%), caryophyllene (5.64–20.01%), cis -ocimene (tr−43.93%), eudesmadiene (0–15.06%), and camphene (tr−20.57%). Cluster analysis classified the leaf oils into two chemotypes: one rich in α-pinene and β-pinene, and the other rich in β-phellandrene.

Abstract:Hydro-distillated volatile oils of Ephedra sinica Stapf. from six populations of Inner Mongolia in Northeastern China were analyzed by using GC/MS. Ninety-nine compounds were identified in the oils and a relatively high variation in their contents was found. The main constituents of the essential oils were α-terpineol (19.28–52.23%), p-vinylanisole (0.59–11.64%), 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol (0–5.44%), tetramethylpyrazine (0.63–8.99%), terpine-4-ol (1.17–4.37%), α-linalool (1.62–5.15%), phytol (1.24–15.73%), γ-eudesmol (0–7.77%), and eudesm-7(11)-en-4-ol (0.41–6.13). Six populations were divided into two chemotypes based on cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA); one rich in α-terpineol and p-vinylanisole, and the other rich in phytol, γ-eudesmol, and eudesm-7(11)-en-4-ol.

Abstract:Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation from the leaves of Cryptomeria fortunei from the principal habitats in China. The essential oil yields of samples from various locations ranged from 0.61 to 1.66% (w/w). GC–MS analysis revealed eighty-seven compounds, constituting 85.89–94.75% of the total essential oils. The main constituents were kaurene (0–44.69%), phyllocladene (0.07–32.98%), kaur-16-ene (0–32.28%), elemol (5.28–18.92%), α-cadinol (0–11.39%), α-eudesmol (0–11.21%), α-pinene (2.32–9.15%). The samples were separated into 3 chemotypes by hierarchical cluster analysis, according to the composition of the corresponding essential oils. Chemical composition of essential oils was significantly related to nine geographic distributions among populations. Our results revealed chemical polymorphism in the essential oils of the C. fortunei leaf in China. The chemical variability could be attributed to genetic and environmental factors. The chemical diversity of the oils offers opportunity to choose C. fortunei leaves and essential oils with preferential compound for green plant protection, pharmaceutical, perfume and food industries.

Abstract:The chemical constituents of leaf oils of Elephantopus scaber L. from 12 locations in Southern China, including three provinces and Hong Kong, were investigated using GC/MS. A total of 24 compounds were detected, of which 20 were identified by their mass spectra fragmentation patterns. The major compounds include hexadecanoic acid (8.19–39.22%), octadecadienoic acid (trace - 29.22%), five alkane homologues, i.e., n-tetradecane (1.19–5.26%), n-pentadecane (3.22–12.05%), n-hexadecane (2.38–16.26%), n-heptadecane (2.48–15.32%), and n-octadecane (1.39–9.59%), as well as tetramethylhexadecenol (2.06–4.31%). Hierarchical cluster analysis classified the leaf oils into two groups. Two main chemotypes of leaf oils in E. scaber were thus identified, one rich in hexadecanoic acid and octadecadienoic acid, and the other rich in the five alkane homologues.

Abstract:The composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of different geographical origin of Chimonanthus praecox, including Hangzhou and Wenzhou samples, were investigated by GC/MS. Forty three components comprising 93.05 % of the leave oils from Hangzhou plant, and 32 components comprising 94.26 % of the leave oils from Wenzhou plant were identified. The major components in the leaf oil from Hangzhou samples were (-)-alloisolongifolene (10.20 %), caryophyllene (9.31 %), elixene (8.52 %), germacrene D (7.30 %), germacrene B (7.44 %), d -cadinene (6.17 %) and b -elemen (4.67 %). While, the oil from Wenzhou samples contained furan, 3-(4,8-dimethyl-3,7-nonadienyl)-, (E)-(21.69 %), eucalyptol (19.02 %), terpilene (12.41 %), p-menth-1-en-8-ol (6.65 %) and geraniol (5.29 %) as the major components. The antifungal activity of the oils against 8 phytopathogenic fungi was tested by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations using the microdilution method. Both oils exhibited potent antifungal activities with MIC values of 8-32 mu g/mL. Both oils were considered bioactive, showing an LC50 value of 30 and 22 mu g/mL in the Artemia salina lethality test.

Abstract:Essential oils are secondary metabolites in plants with a variety of biological activities. The flavor and quality of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. are mainly determined by the essential oil components in the Chinese prickly ash peels. In this study, the correlation between climate change in different regions and the content of essential oils of Z. armatum was investigated using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and multivariate statistical analysis. The Z1–24 refers to 24 batches of samples from different habitats. A total of 145 essential oils were detected in 24 batches of samples, with the highest number of terpene species and the highest content of alcohol. The relative odor activity (ROAV) values identified nine main flavor compounds affecting the odor of Z. armatum. Linalool, decanal, and d-limonene were the most critical main flavor compounds, giving Z. armatum a spicy, floral, oily, and fruity odor. The results of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) classified Z5 into a separate group, Z2 and Z7 were clustered into one group, and the rest of the samples were classified into another group. Correlation analysis and path analysis showed that temperature and precipitation were the main climatic factors affecting essential oils. Comparisons can be made with other plants in the genus Zanthoxylum to analyze differences in essential oil type and content. This study contributes to the identification of Z. armatum quality, promotes the accumulation of theories on the effects of climatic factors on essential oils, and enriches the site selection and breeding of Z. armatum under similar climatic conditions.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to analyze the chemical compositions and chemo types of the essential oil obtained from the fresh leaves of wild species belonging to Sect. Camphor (Trew.) Meissn. in the southeastern of China. Hydro-distillation of essential oils was carried out by the refined oil extraction equipment of Nanchang Institute of Technology (patent application number: 201710158988.8), quality and quantity analysis of the essential oil was carried out by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). After 3 years of investigation more than 1000 individuals, 7 chemotypes were classified in southeast China, including citral- type, linalool-type, camphor-type, cineol-type, safrole-type, methyleugenol-type and nerolidol-type, the last three were the newly discovered of SCM in the area. Especially the individual plants sample number 108 and 107 obtained a high yield of fresh leaf essential oil of 1.35 % and 1.96 % in linalool-type and safrole-type, respectively. The sample number 108 contained twenty-eight compounds which accounting for 99.87 % of the whole essential oil and the content of ?-linalool (95.18 %) was the main chemical composition. The sample number 107 contained twenty-six compounds which accounting for 99.90 % of the whole essential oil and the content of safrole (97.04 %) was the main chemical composition. The results indicated that highly economic value natural plant essential oil linalool and safrole superior individual of varieties were found in the study, which are available for the next study and further development of natural plant essential oils.

Abstract:The volatile compositions of hydrodistilled essential oils in the flower heads of Chrysanthemum indicum L. from eight populations in China were analyzed by GC/MS. A total of 169 compounds representing 88.79–99.53% of the oils were identified, and some remarkable differences were found in the constituent percentages of the eight populations. The predominant components of the essential oils were 1,8‐cineole (0.62–7.34%), (+)‐(1R,4R)‐camphor (0.17–27.56%), caryophyllene oxide (0.54–5.8%), β‐phellandrene (0.72–1.87%), (−)‐(1S,2R,4S)‐borneol acetate (0.33–8.46%), 2‐methyl‐6‐(p‐tolyl)hept‐2‐ene (0.3–8.6%), 4,6,6‐trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept‐3‐en‐2‐yl acetate (0.17–26.48%), and hexadecanoic acid (0.72–15.97%). The chemotaxonomic value of the essential‐oil compositions was discussed according to the results of cluster analysis (CA) and principal‐component analysis (PCA). The eight populations were divided into five groups as different chemotypes (Groups A–E), and the scores together with the loadings revealed clearly different chemical properties of each population. In conclusion, GC/MS in combination with chemometric techniques provided a flexible and reliable method for characterizing the essential oils of different populations of C. indicum L.

Abstract:Essential oils were isolated from the leaves of Platycladus orientalis growing in 16 areas of China. The essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In total, 98 volatile compounds were identified. Chemical variability in essential oil composition was evaluated using cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The two analyses led to the identification of four chemotypes: α-pinene, α-pinene/3-carene, cedrol, and cedrol/terpinyl acetate. Geographically, the populations growing in close proximity had similar essential oil composition. The chemical variability could possibly be attributed to genetic and environmental factors.

Abstract:Cinnamomum camphora is a traditional aromatic plant used to produce linalool and borneol flavors in southern China; however, its leaves also contain many other unutilized essential oils. Herein, we report geographic relationships for the yield and compositional diversity of C. camphora essential oils. The essential oils of 974 individual trees from 35 populations in 13 provinces were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection, respectively. Oil yields ranged from 0.01% to 3.46%, with a significantly positive correlation with latitude and a significantly negative correlation with longitude. In total, 41 compounds were identified, including 15 monoterpenoids, 24 sesquiterpenoids, and two phenylpropanoids. Essential oil compositions varied significantly among individuals and could be categorized into various chemotypes. The six main chemotypes were eucalyptol, nerolidol, camphor, linalool, selina, and mixed types. The other 17 individual plants were chemotypically rare and exhibited high levels of methyl isoeugenol, methyl eugenol, δ-selinene, or borneol. Eucalyptol-type plants had the highest average oil yield of 1.64%, followed in decreasing order by linalool-, camphor-, mixed-, selina-, and nerolidol-type plants. In addition, the five main compounds exhibited a clear geographic gradient. Eucalyptol and linalool showed a significantly positive correlation with latitude, while selina-6-en-4-ol was significantly and negatively correlated with latitude. trans-Nerolidol and selina-6-en-4-ol showed significantly positive correlations with longitude, whereas camphor was significantly and negatively correlated with longitude. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that environmental factors could strong effect the oil yield and essential oil profile of C. camphora.
Essential oil variations in different Perilla L. accessions: chemotaxonomic implications

Abstract:In 2006, 26 accessions (mainly from Sichuan province, China) in one species and two varietal species among the genus Perilla L. were collected, and the essential oils (EOs) of their fresh leaves during the flowering period were analyzed by the GC-MS method in 2007. In total, 49 components could be identified. The results showed that eight chemotypes could be identified as follows: PK (perillaketone), DLP ( d -limonene and piperitone), PT (piperitenone), MS (myristicin), AL (apiol), EM (elemicin), DEK (dehydroelsholtzia ketone) and PA (perilla aldehyde). Of them, chemotype DLP, AL and DEK were reported for the first time; DLP and AL were found only in the accessions from Sichuan province, China. In our study, the EOs of P06-1Z and P06-28 were investigated at several stages during growing. Taking into account the variability of the two accessions during the year, the seasonal influence on the main constituents could not change the status of the different chemotypes distinguished or enhance the veracity of the differentiation of eight chemotypes. The results also suggested that it may not always be possible to establish a correlation between the traditional morphological taxonomy and chemotypes.
Variation of Essential Oil of Mentha Haplocalyx Briq. and Mentha Spicata L. from China

Abstract:Essential oil properties of different geographical populations of Mentha haplocalyx and M. spicata were analyzed. The yield of essential oils varied in the range of 0.5–3.0% within forty-five populations. Based on essential oil composition, all M. haplocalyx accessions could be classified into six chemotypes, including linalool, pulegone, menthone, carvone, menthol, and piperitenone oxide. In particular, all chemotypes were observed in Sichuan Basin. M. spicata accessions were relatively stable in essential oil content and composition, and were grouped together into chemotype carvone. M. haplocalyx was polymorphic in essential oil properties which could be associated with its genetic diversity. Sichuan Basin in China could be a primary diversity region for M. haplocalyx rather than for M. spicata. The characterization of essential oil variation is of commercial importance as well as helpful in the improvement of Mentha resources for fragrance and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract:Cinnamomum plants are rich in natural essential oils, which are widely used as materials in the fragrance, insecticidal, antibacterial agent, pharmaceutical, and food industries; however, few studies have investigated the essential oil components of Cinnamomum bodinieri. Therefore, this study investigated the diversity of essential oils from the leaves of 885 individual C. bodinieri plants across 32 populations in five provinces. Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation, and then qualitative and quantitative analyses of the compounds were performed by GC-MS and GC-FID. A total of 87 chemical constituents were identified in the essential oils, including 33 monoterpenes, 48 sesquiterpenes, and six other compounds. The average oil yield was 0.75%, and individual oil yields ranged from 0.01% to 4.28%. A total of 16 chemotypes were classified according to variations in the essential oil chemical constituents of C. bodinieri, among which the camphor-type, citral-type, and eucalyptol-type were dominant. Moreover, the borneol-type, cymol-type, elemol-type, methylisoeugenol-type, and selina-6-en-4-ol-type were reported in C. bodinieri for the first time. The yield and principal components of the essential oils were mainly affected by altitude, temperature, and sunshine duration, among which altitude had the most significant effect; thus, low-altitude areas are more suitable for the synthesis and accumulation of essential oils. Based on the different characteristics of the essential oils in the leaves of C. bodinieri, several excellent populations and individuals were identified in this study. Moreover, the findings provide a foundation for breeding superior varieties and studying essential oil biosynthesis mechanisms in the future.

Characterisation of the Essential Oil from Different Aerial Parts of Lindera Chunii Merr. (Lauraceae).

Abstract:The essential oils from three organs (i.e. flowers, leaves and stems) of wild Lindera chunii Merr. in Dinghu Mountain (China) were obtained by microwave-assisted hydrodistillation. The essential oils were analysed by gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The yields of essential oil varied from 0.06% to 0.59% and showed a remarkable variation among the plant organs. A total of 43 compounds accounting for 95.4-96.3% of the total essential oil were identified, and the major compounds were germacrene B (0.7-43.2%), viridiflorene (trace to 14.6%), globulol (6.3-11.6%), -cadinol (1.7-8.6%) and -cadinol (0.5-7.3%). This study shows that the chemical compositions of the essential oils from the different organs of L. chunii are very variable.
Characterization of Essential Oil Composition of Lavender Grown in Different Regions of Southern China

Abstract:In order to understand the chemical constituents of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill. × L. latifolia Medik.) derived from different areas, the essential oils of flowers were extracted from Puyuan (PY), Xiamen (XM) and Kunming (KM) by using steam distillation method, the chemical constituents and relative contents were analyzed by GC-MS. The results showed that yield of essential oils from PY, XM and KM were 6.6%, 3.1%and 3.2%, respectively. There were 50, 59 and 44 compounds detected from PY, XM and KM, respectively, among which the contents of eucalyptol,α-bisabolol, camphor and linalool together accounted for more than 75%of the total essential oils. The main constituents had no signiifcant difference among three regions, but their contents were quite different from each other, and the components of essential oils had differnces. Furthermore, the contents of eucalyptol, camphor andα-bisabolol had relation to altitude and average annual rainfall.

Abstract:This study aimed at chemical variability of flower essential oils of 10 well-known cultivars of Paeonia × suffruticosa Andr. The essential oil yields ranged as 0.19–0.67% ( w/w ). The chemical compositions varied with cultivars. 'Xueying Taohua' essential oil had predominance of citronellol (56.4%). 'Guifei Chacui' essential oil was rich in citronellol (35.9%) and phloroglucinol trimethyl ether (25.3%). 'Sheng Gejin' and 'Yuhou Fengguang' essential oils were rich in phloroglucinol trimethyl ether (36.5%, 26.8%). 'Yinhong Qiaodui' essential oil contained geraniol + nerol (23.9%). Those from the other five cultivars did not present typical chemotypes. Nevertheless several compounds were noted, mainly germacrene D, heptadeca-6,9-diene, ( Z )-hex-3-en-1-ol and linalool oxide (furan). 'Luhe Hong' essential oil contained the most unique components, including α-cadinol, τ-muurolol and δ-cadinene. Lack of phenylethyl alcohol was noticeable in some essential oil samples as compared with hydrolate extracts investigated previously. Multivariate analyses revealed four distinct clusters from all the essential oil samples.

Methods Twelve phenotypic traits and three chemical compositions were assessed in 28 populations of P. vulgaris collected from different locations in China. Results The variability ranges observed at phenotypic and chemical levels were polymorphic. According to the morphological traits, 28 populations of P. vulgaris could be grouped into six clusters, and two morpho-types could be clearly distinguished. Perceptible differences could be discerned in the plant height, leaf length, corolla length, calyx length, fruiting spikes length, and maturity period. Based on three kinds of components including ursolic acid, total flavonoids, and total polysaccharides, all populations could be identified as four types. Cluster IV showing high content of ursolic acid, total flavonoids, and total polysaccharides could be utilized to develop superior derivatives. Conclusion The variation of chemical characteristics is influenced by the genetic and environmental factors, such as soil, climate, longitude, and altitude. It provides a solid basis for efficiently evaluating qualities and establishing good agricultural practices for P. vulgaris.
