The Bridge to Future Hydrogen Economy

Abstract:This paper reviewed the hydrogen and fuel cell progresses in the current world briefly. In particular the hydrogen industry, from hydrogen production, purification, transportation, storage, to high pressure hydrogen filling station and end user has been developed fast in China. However, there are still several barriers for pure hydrogen fuel, such as hydrogen storage for Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) and the reliability and lifetime for Fuel Cell Vehicles. Thus author strongly recommended to use hydrogen mixing fuel, such as Hydrogen-compressed Natural Gas (HCNG) at the first stage of hydrogen economy and then transfer to pure hydrogen fuel step by step. Thus HICE and HCNG are the best candidates in China at the moment. In order to practice the hydrogen energy in China, it is suggested to build a hydrogen hallway to link Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan. The more details analysis is given by the author from viewpoint of technology and economy. There are about 14 million and 11 million population in Beijing and Tianjin respectively, and there are about 4 million vehicles in this area. So a clean and high efficiency hydrogen hallway will benefit this area. There will be several hydrogen filling stations to fill vehicles with contained hydrogen fuel, such as HCNG, natural gas and even pure hydrogen, for both fuel cell vehicles and HICE vehicles. As hydrogen fuel is cheaper than gasoline, it is expect the hydrogen hallway will be commercialized and copied by other places in China. At last, author pointed that the government action is very important for hydrogen energy, special at the beginning of such a new energy.
