Abstract:As a major source of forest regeneration,soil seed bank critically influences forest succession and restoration.Habitat fragmentation increasingly affects forest systems,which could in turn alter forest soil seed bank.Here,to explore how habitat fragmentation (e.g.island size,shape,isolation and distance from island edge) influences forest soil seed bank,we studied soil seed bank composition of the secondary Masson pine forests on mainland and 29 study islands in the Thousand Island Lake region,eastern China.By adopting the "large number of small samples" method,we systematically sampled Masson pine forest soils in December (early winter) 2015 and April (late spring) 2016.Then we conducted germination experiment to estimate soil seed bank compositions of the upper (0-2 cm) and lower (2-5 cm) soil layers.We found that (1) 1422 seedlings belonging to 41 species,40 genera and 29 families were germinated from 316 soil samples,among which woody plant seedlings comprised 1024 individuals,13 species and herbaceous plant seedlings comprised 398 individuals,28 species.(2) Results of Jaccard index and correlation analyses both indicated the soil seed bank composition was very similar between early winter and late spring,and between upper and lower soil layers.(3)Generalized linear mixed-effects modeling results implied the lower soil layer harbored fewer seeds than the upper soil layer for mainland and island forests combined.Compared with mainland,island forest soil harbored more seeds of herbaceous plants than woody plants.In island forests,the lower soil layer harbored less seeds than the upper soil layer;seed number in soil decreased as distance from edge increased,especially for herbaceous plants;among woody plant seeds,seed number of shade-intolerant plants was considerably larger than that of shade-tolerant plants,especially for the lower soil layer.The results suggest the soil seed bank composition of Masson pine forests in the Thousand Island Lake region was altered by habitat fragmentation,which might influence the succession of Masson pine forest communities.

Abstract:Secondary Masson pine forests represent an important forest type in subtropical China ,most of them is in fragments .Masson pine forests are the early stage of forest succession after disturbance ,of which the late stage might be the typical regional subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forests .Understanding the regeneration dynamics of fragmented secondary Masson pine forests is critical to the management of regional forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning .Therefore ,we explored the short term seedling dynamics of shade tolerant (ST ) and intolerant (SI) plant species in the secondary Masson pine forests on the islands of Thousand Island Lake (TIL) .We found that ST species showed higher seedling survival rate than SI species ,while ST and SI species were not different in seedling recruitment rate and relative growth rate (RGR) at multiple time intervals ranging from 0 .5 to 3 .5 a .We also found that seedling survival and recruitment were not influenced by island size and island shape index .Meanwhile ,shade tolerant shrub dominated over seedling composition ,but other functional groups were low in relative abundance . These results imply that ST species regenerate better than SI species in the Masson pine forests on the islands of TIL .Island area and shape index may not largely influence the short term forest seedling regeneration dynamics ,and the major functional group of community regeneration is shade tolerant shrub .This study suggests that the seedling dynamics of the fragmented Masson pine forests is directional ,favoring ST species regeneration . However ,its short‐term (≤3 .5 a) seedling dynamics may not be sensitive to fragmented status ,and the dominance of shade tol‐erant shrub is in the undergrowth layer of these forests .
Effect of Soil Drought Stress on Water Use Efficiency of Masson Pine of Different Speices

Abstract:The effect of soil drought stress on water use efficiency was investigated by one-year-old Masson pine of different speices.The results showed that the WUE of each speices increased except class 464,23,75 during soil drought stress.Some speices increased relatively high such as class 83,127 and 38 etc.The promotion of WUE demonstrated that these speices of Masson pine could maintain relatively high photosynthesis productivity during the descendant of water.

Abstract:Drought and nitrogen deposition are predicted to increase with global change, but the interactive effects of the two factors on tree physiology are still poorly understood. We investigated the individual and interactive effects of drought and nitrogen addition on growth and leaf physiology of Pinus massoniana seedlings. Seedlings were grown in growth chambers with two soil water (i.e. well watered and drought stress) and two nitrogen conditions (i.e. 0 and 40 kg N hm a). Biomass accumulation and allocation, leaf relative water content (RWC), free leaf water content (FWC), leaf chlorophyll (Chla+b, Chla, Chlb, Chla/b), contents of carotenoid (Car), malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline (Pro), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were examined throughout the entire experimental period. This study showed that the contents of MDA and Pro, SOD activity, root shoot ratio (R/S) and root mass ratio (RMR) were increased significantly in the drought treatment, while Chla+b, Chla, RWC and growth of seedlings were significantly decreased. In contrast, nitrogen addition had positive impacts on leaf chlorophyll content, leaf RWC and growth of seedlings. Leaf chlorophyll content had positive relationship with RWC irrespective of nitrogen supply, while MDA and Pro content had opposite trends. We also found that nitrogen addition could substantially ameliorate the negative impact of drought on P. massoniana, by increasing growth and limiting accumulation of MDA, Pro and SOD activity. This short term study suggests that current ambient nitrogen deposition in southern China may be helpful for establishment of P. massoniana seedlings in bare lands with limited water availability.

Abstract:Pinus massoniana L. is one of the most important conifer species in southern China and is the mainstay of the forest ecosystem and timber production, yet low temperatures limit its growth and geographical distribution. This study used 30-day-old seedlings from families of varying cold-tolerance to examine the morphological traits of needles and stems, chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics, protective enzymes, and changes in starch and lignin under different low-temperature stresses in an artificial climate chamber. The results showed that the seedlings of Pinus massoniana exhibited changes in phenotypic morphology and tissue structure under low-temperature stress. Physiological and biochemical indexes such as protective enzymes, osmoregulatory substances, starch, and lignin responded to low-temperature stress. The cold-tolerant family increased soluble sugars, starch grain, and lignin content as well as peroxidase activity, and decreased malondialdehyde content by increasing the levels of actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII), electron transport rate (ETR), and photochemical quenching (qP) to improve the cold tolerance ability. This study provides a reference for the selection and breeding of cold-tolerant genetic resources of Pinus massoniana and the mechanism of cold-tolerance, as well as the analysis of the mechanism of adaptation of Pinus massoniana in different climatic regions of China.
The litter of Pinus massoniana ecological public-welfare forest in Zhejiang Province and its relationship with the community characters

Abstract:Twenty-four sample plots of P.massoniana public-welfare forest distributed in twelve counties were investigated in over 100,000 km~2 zones of Zhejiang province.Five 1 m~2 quadrates were placed in every plot by using a diagonal method.From March 2000 to May 2001,litters were collected and analyzed every month.Studying the litter of P.massoniana forest in different zones and of different ages enables the exploration of the litter characteristics and their relationship with community characteristics and plant diversity.This provides the basic materials for forest litter research and important references for building and restoring ecological public-welfare forests.The results showed that the average annual litter production of P.massoniana forest was 257.9 g/(m~2·a) in which the litter production of leaf,branch,fruit,bark and crumb was 84.6%,4.7%,4.2%,2.0% and 4.5% respectively.There were no significant differences of annual litter production between the Northwest,Middle and South of Zhejiang(p0.05).However,litter production was much less along the seaboard.This implies that the litter of P.massoniana forest diminished while the latitude increased as discussed in the relationship between the litter of P.massoniana forest and the environment on the macro-scale.Litter production in the pure P.massoniana forest was less than non-pure forests,though they were of the same age and there was a logarithmic relativity between annual litter productions and the ages of P.massoniana forest(p0.01).The amount of litter declined gradually with the age of the P.massoniana forest.The relationship between annual litter production and the diameter at breast height,height,biomass of P.massoniana and the community biomass also showed logarithmic relativity(p0.01).The relationship between the annual litter production and Shannon-Wiener Index showed linear positive relativity.That means more tree species,mostly consisting of evergreen and defoliated broad-leaved trees,produced more litters in the P.massoniana forest.Because of the lower litter production in pure P.massoniana forest and the decline of litters in growing P.massoniana forest,the pure P.massoniana forest did not aid stand on soil self-fertilization,the retention of water or the deep restoration of vegetation.Moreover,the ecological benefit was lower.This suggests that P.massoniana forests might be improved with adding broad-leaved trees if the soil conditions allowed.The research can provide some insights for building and restoring stronger ecological functioning forests as well as restoring and reconstructing better ecologically environments and maintaining biodiversity.

Abstract:AimsPinus massoniana Lamb. is a widely distributed native species and afforestation pioneer tree in the subtropical forests of China; however, the species’ quality and productivity are significantly affected by phosphorus (P) deficiency. Although ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi can enhance plant adaptation to nutrient deficiency, the interactive effects of ECM fungi colonization and P availability on physiological responses and nutrient uptake in P. massoniana seedlings remain unknown.MethodWe compared the physiological response and nutrient absorption of uninoculated P. massoniana seedlings and seedlings inoculated with Suillus luteus or S. bovinus under three P supplies (P deficiency, 0.01 mM/L; medium P, 0.1 mM/L; and P sufficiency, 1 mM/L) in sand culture.ResultsP deficiency limited the seedlings growth and nutrient content but increased the antioxidant enzyme activity. S. luteus and S. bovinus significantly increased the seedlings growth under P deficiency. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) as well as the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline of inoculated and uninoculated seedlings were significantly higher under P deficiency than P sufficiency. Under P deficiency, POD and SOD activities increased with time and were higher in inoculated seedlings; however, proline contents were lower in inoculated seedlings. P deficiency decreased the P and potassium (K) contents in the roots, stems, and leaves of seedlings. Moreover, under P deficiency, S. luteus significantly improved P content in stems and leaves, whereas S. bovinus significantly improved K content in leaves.ConclusionECM fungi increased SOD and POD activities and improved P and K absorption in P. massoniana seedlings in response to P deficiency.

[Effects of litterfall and root input on soil physical and chemical properties in Pinus massoniana plantations in Three Gorges Reservoir Area, China]

Abstract:An investigation was made on the soil physical and chemical properties in different-aged Pinus massoniana plantations in Three Gorges Reservoir Area under effects of litterfall and roots. The annual litter production in mature stand was 19.4% and 65.7% higher than that in nearly mature and middle-aged stands, respectively. The litter standing amount was in the sequence of mature stand > middle-aged stand > nearly mature stand, while the litter turnover coefficient was in the order of nearly mature stand (0.51) > mature stand (0.40) > middle-aged stand (0.36). The total root biomass, live root biomass, and dead root biomass were the highest in middle-aged stand, and the lowest in nearly mature stand. In middle-aged stand, soil total porosity was the highest, and soil bulk density was the lowest. Soil organic matter and total nitrogen contents were in the order of mature stand > middle-aged stand > nearly mature stand, soil nitrate nitrogen occupied a larger proportion of soil mineral N in nearly mature stand, while ammonium nitrogen accounted more in middle-aged and mature stands. In nearly mature stand, litter production was moderate but turnover coefficient was the highest, and soil nutrient contents were the lowest. In middle-aged stand, root biomass and soil total porosity were the highest, and soil bulk density were the lowest. In mature stand, root biomass was lower while soil nutrient contents were the highest. The increase of root biomass could improve soil physical properties.
Analysis of species and phylogenetic β diversity drivers in the Masson pine forests in Suichang, Zhejiang Province

Abstract:Habitat filtering and dispersal limitation are the main ecological processes affecting species composition variation (β diversity) in forest communities, but their relative importance in subtropical Masson pine (Pinus massoniana) forests remains unclear. Jointly analysis of how phylogenetic and species β diversity varies with habitat factors and geographic distance is critical to understand the roles played by historical and current ecological processes in shaping the regional biodiversity. In this study, 37 Masson pine forest plots in Suichang County, Zhejiang Province were selected to analyze the species and phylogenetic β diversities, and the main ecological mechanisms driving the differences of species composition among communities were explored. Species β diversity index (Bray-Curtis) and phylogenetic β diversity index (the mean phylogenetic dissimilarity, Dnn; the mean nearest taxon distance, Dpw) were calculated, and their correlation with habitat factors including soil and topography, as well as geographical distance were analyzed. The relative importance of habitat factors and geographical distance on species and phylogenetic β diversity was analyzed by variance partitioning. In addition, two life stages (divided by diameter class) and growth form were for the same analyses. The results were as follows: (1) Bray-Curtis index significantly correlated with soil factors, topographic factors and geographical distance. Dnn correlated with geographical distance only. Dpw correlated with soil factors and geographical distance. (2) The explanatory degree of habitat factors to Bray-Curtis and Dpw was higher than that of geographical distance. (3) For species diversity, habitat factors could better explain Bray-Curtis of both life stages than geographical distance. For phylogenetic diversity, geographical distance could better explain Dnn and Dpw of sapling stage, while habitat factors were more likely to explain Dpw of adult stage. To conclude, The results show that habitat filtering is the main ecological mechanism driving species and phylogenetic β diversity of Masson pine forests in this region. Dispersal limitation plays a dominant role in the β diversity of Masson pine forests only at the sapling stage. The most important finding of this research is that the main mechanism drives for species and phylogenetic β diversity in Masson pine forests are different, which highlights the necessity of joint analysis of species and phylogenetic β diversity. This research also suggests that the main ecological mechanism drives β diversity may change as plants shift across different growth stages.
Growth and nutrient characteristics of Pinus massoniana in a Southern red soil

Abstract:Abstract The aim of the present study was to provide a reference that could facilitate vegetation restoration activities in Southern red soil regions of China. We investigated the growth and nutrient characteristics of Pinus massoniana. We measured plant heights and diameters at breast height and collected organ samples in three plots in Huangnikeng in Zhuotian Town, Changting County, Fujian Province. There were mostly positive correlations among all Pinus massoniana growth indices, although the correlation between plant height and leaf biomass was negative. Conversely, nutrient concentrations among Pinus massoniana bark, trunk, leaves, branches, and roots differed greatly. The C concentrations of various Pinus massoniana organs were ranked as leaves > bark > branches > trunks > roots; N concentrations, leaves > roots > branches > bark > trunks; P concentrations, leaves > roots > branches > bark > trunk; and K concentrations, roots > leaves > bark > branches > trunk. C:N, C:P, C:K, and N:P were significantly different in different Pinus massoniana organs. The results suggest that the biomass of each organ in Pinus massoniana decreased in the order of trunk, branch, roots, and leaves, and the nutrient concentrations decreased in the order of leaves, roots, bark, branch, and trunk.
Dynamics of Soil Nutrients, Microbial Community Structure, Enzymatic Activity, and Their Relationships along a Chronosequence of Pinus massoniana Plantations

Abstract:Pinus massoniana is the major afforestation and vegetation restoration tree in southern China, and it plays an important role in the sustainable development of plantations. However, long-term single planting of P. massoniana has resulted in the decline of soil quality and forest productivity, and a soil fertility assessment is urgently needed. We selected P. massoniana plantations of four age stages for plot investigation and sampling to determine the soil physicochemical properties, microbial diversity and composition, and enzyme activities at different soil depths. The results showed that soil total phosphorus (TP) and available phosphorus (AP) decreased with the increase of age, especially low C/N ratio and high C/P and N/P ratio in the 30-year and 36-year stands, leading to P limitation. Meanwhile, the bacterial Shannon index also decreased with the increase of age and was positively correlated with AP, NO3−-N, and pH. However, the fungal Shannon index decreased first and then increased with the increase of age; soil acid phosphatase (S-ACP) and urease activities showed a similar trend. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the increase of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) promoted the increase of fungal Shannon index, which was beneficial to the secretion of more enzymes. We found that soil physicochemical properties, microbial diversity, and enzyme activity decreased simultaneously when soil depths increased. Moreover, Acidobacteria and Basidiomycota were the most abundant bacterial and fungal communities, respectively, followed by Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria for bacteria and Ascomycota for fungi, and these microbial taxa were significantly affected by soil water content (SWC), TOC, AP, and C/P. In conclusion, this work reveals the potential correlation among soil physicochemical properties, microbial diversity and composition, and enzyme activities, and revealed potential correlations among them which will help to improve understanding of soil conditions and provide a reference for rational management of soil resources.

Abstract:Aims Pometia tomentosa is the major dominant species in the tropical seasonal rain forests of Xishuangbanna,Southwest China.It is listed in the rare and endangered species in China.Research on seed and seedling ecology of P.tomentosa may provide information for rare and endangered species conservation and forest restoration.Methods Shade house and forest experiments were designed to investigate light effects on seed germination and seedling establishment of P.tomentosa.Seedling growth,biomass allocation and physiological properties of P.tomentosa were examined in neutral-density shade houses,which were used to mirror different light levels in centers of forest gaps,at edges of forest gaps and forest understory.Important findings Results showed that final seed germinations in all treatments were greater than 95% and occurred within six days.Seedlings in 30% light treatment had the highest root mass ratio(RMR)and stem mass ratio(SMR).However,seedlings in 10% and 3.5% light treatments had the highest leaf mass ratio(LMR).Seedlings grown in low light environments(such as 10% and 3.5% light treatments)had a higher leaf area ratio(LAR)than those in high light(30% light treatment).Seedlings in 30% light treatment had the highest maximum photosynthetic rate(Pnmax),dark respiration(Rd)and light saturation point(Isat),but the compensation point(Icomp)was not significantly different among the three light treatments.Seedlings of P.tomentosa were able to grow slowly and survive for a long time;therefore,it is a shade tolerant species.Also,seedlings of shade houses showed increased RGRM and RGRH in high light comparing with low light.It is concluded that gaps in the forest canopy are probably necessary for successful regeneration of P.tomentosa.Soil moisture also may affect the habitat selection of P.tomentosa seedlings.
Characteristics and Effects of Sprouting on Species Diversity in a Subtropical Evergreen Broad-Leaved Forest in Gutianshan, East China

Abstract:Sprouting,a life history strategy found in woody plant communities,enables woody plants to persist in situ through disturbance events.The ‘persistence niche’ of sprouting has important influences on species coexistence,community assembly,and ecosystem stability.However,the mechanism of the ‘persistence niche’ in maintaining species diversity is not well understood.Based on data collected in a 5 ha plot in a mid-subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in the Gutianshan National Natural Reserve of Zhejiang Province,China,we analyzed the characteristics of sprouting and their relationships with species diversity.Our results revealed that the sprouting species had a great proportion of 63.95％ in richness and a high proportion of 38.53％ in abundance,especially a higher abundance proportion of 59.51％ of potential sprouting at the community level.Sprouting occurred in most taxa,and there was high ability of sprouting in Fagaceae,Ericaceae,Hamamelidaceae,and Theaceae.There were significant negative correlations between abundance proportion of sprouting species and the biodiversity index of the community,despite no relationships between richness proportion of sprouting species and biodiversity index.Therefore,the sprouters could retain their position in forests and reduce biodiversity of the forest community.This trade-off of sprouting may result in the maintenance of community stability.
Effects of Soil Microorganisms on Carbon Sequestration under Different Mixed Modification Models in Pinus massoniana L. Plantation

Abstract:In forests, microbial populations in the soil can directly influence the decomposition of carbon from surface plants, promoting carbon storage and stability. However, in sustainable forest management, it is still unclear how soil microorganisms under different plantation types affect organic carbon sequestration and whether the mechanisms of influence are the same. In this research, we focused on four mixed forests and pure Pinus massoniana-planted forest in the state-owned forest farm of Dushan County. Three replicated plots were set up for each model, and soil samples were collected from different layers (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–60 cm), totaling 45 samples. We elucidated the effects of soil microorganisms on carbon sequestration under five mixed modification models of P. massoniana and further explored the mechanisms by which microbial functional communities regulate soil carbon sequestration under different mixed models through molecular sequencing and collinear network analysis. Variance analysis indicated that the soil organic carbon (SOC) of the same soil layer varied significantly, and there were also significant differences in the composition of soil bacterial and fungal microbial communities. Moreover, the bacterial community was more sensitive to changes in the vegetation environment, while the fungal community structure was more resistant to changes in the soil environment. Correlation analysis indicated that the diversity and composition of the bacterial community had more positive effects on soil organic carbon than those of the fungal community. Linear fitting and redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that particulate organic carbon (POC) in soil had the strongest correlation with SOC content. Soil microorganisms affected the storage and stability of soil carbon mainly by regulating the conversion of litter (carbon sources) into POC. The soil environment of different mixed models had different effects on soil carbon accumulation. Both correlation and collinearity network analyses indicated that soil microbial functional groups could enhance carbon storage by regulating readily oxidizable carbon (EOC) and POC content in mixed forest plantations. The results of our study provide a sound basis for replanting a reasonable forest model structure to improve forest carbon storage.

Abstract:Introduction: Nutrient resorption is a key mechanism to conserve nutrients and overcome nutrient limitation in perennial plants. As an important afforested tree species in subtropical regions, Pinus massoniana grows well in nutrient-poor environments, however, the age-related pattern of nutrient acquisition strategy and the underlying mechanisms in P. massoniana plantations remain unclear. Methods: In this study, concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were measured in green and senesced needles, roots and soil samples collected from P. massoniana plantations with different stand ages (9-, 17-, 26-, 34- and 43-year-old) in south China. From these samples, nutrient resorption efficiency (RE) and stoichiometry were calculated. Results: Needle PRE significantly decreased with stand age, while there was no clear pattern of NRE along the stand development. Green needle N:P in older stands was significantly lower than in younger ones. Senesced needle C:P and N:P significantly decreased with stand age. Root and soil available P concentrations were significantly higher in older stands than in younger ones, and PRE was negatively correlated with soil available P concentration. Discussion: There was a shift from "conservative consumption" to "resource spending" P-use strategy, and P limitation decreased with stand development of P. massoniana plantations. The results provide information of changes in nutrients dynamics, which is relevant for the sustainable management of subtropical forest plantations.

Abstract:A harmonious interspecies relationship is the key to the success of mixed afforestation. This study was conducted to assess the responses of afforestation species to their neighboring trees. We examined five types of stands: monocultures of Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and sea‐buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), and two mixtures (Chinese pine × black locust mixture and Chinese pine × sea‐buckthorn mixture), in the Loess Plateau, northwestern China. The height and diameter at breast height of each tree species were measured, and rhizosphere soil, shoot, and root were sampled. In monocultures, black locust was taller than Chinese pine and sea‐buckthorn, while the height of Chinese pine and sea‐buckthorn was similar. In mixtures, Chinese pine grew better with sea‐buckthorn than alone as a result of modified soil properties and plant nutrition, but not with black locust. When Chinese pine was used as neighbors, it affected the level of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization of black locust, soil properties and AM fungal spore density of black locust and sea‐buckthorn, but did not significantly affect their growth. Our results suggest that the reciprocal effects between tree species in mixture are not symmetric, and thus planning for efficient mixed afforestation requires knowledge of species‐specific growth rate, nutrient requirements and species interactions.This article is protected by copyright. Early effects of crop tree management on undergrowth plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties in a Pinus massoniana plantation

Abstract:Background Soil and understory vegetation are vital components of forest ecosystems. Identifying the interaction of plantation management to vegetation and soil is crucial for developing sustainable plantation ecosystem management strategies. As one of the main measures of close-to-nature management of forest plantation, few studies have paid attention to the effect of crop tree management on the soil properties and understory vegetation. Methods A 36-year-old Pinus massoniana plantation in Huaying city, Sichuan Province was taken as the research object to analyse the changes in undergrowth plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties under three different crop tree densities (100, 150, and 200 N/ha). Results Our results showed that the contents of available phosphorus, organic matter and hydrolysable nitrogen in the topsoil increased significantly after crop tree management, while content of available potassium decreased. The composition of shrub and herb layer was richer, and the dominant species were obviously replaced after crop tree management. The Shannon–Wiener index and Richness index of shrub layer, and the diversity of herb layer increased significantly after crop tree management. Herb layer diversity indexes and Richness index of shrub layer were closely related to soil organic matter, available phosphorus, hydrolysable nitrogen, available potassium, soil moisture and bulk density. As the main limiting factors for plant growth, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were closely related to plant diversity and to the distribution of the dominant species. At the initial stage of crop tree management, each treatment significantly improved the soil physicochemical properties and plant diversity of Pinus massoniana plantation, and the comprehensive evaluation was 200 N/ha >100 N/ha >150 N/ha >CK. Compared with other treatments, 200 N/ha had the best effect on improving the undergrowth environment of the Pinus massoniana plantation in the initial stage of crop tree management.

Abstract:Tree density affects species diversity in forest plantations. Understory species diversity, tree regeneration, and soil physicochemical characteristics were assessed under three planting densities of Pinus massoniana in Taizishan Mountains, Hubei, China. There was a higher degree of shrub and herb species diversity in lower density stands. Total species richness was higher for herbs (n = 42) than for shrubs (n = 30) but the two groups exhibited a similar pattern with greater species richness at lower stand density. Changes in community structure and composition were more frequent in high density stands. Community structure in low and medium density stands was more similar to one another than to high stand densities for both herbs and shrubs. The regeneration status of tree species was more abundant in low and medium density stands. Low and medium density stands had significantly more favorable chemical properties such as soil organic matter, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, and nitrogen, as well as on physical soil properties such as non-capillary pores and minimum water holding capacity. Lower planting density was beneficial with regard to natural regeneration, plant species diversity, and soil quality. Reducing tree density of existing high-density P. massoniana plantations can promote both understory plant species diversity and tree regeneration to sustain forest ecosystem services.

Abstract:Studying the physiological growth status of Pinus yunnanensis Franch and Pinus elliottii Engelm. seedlings under different karst fissure thicknesses and rainfall distributions is of great significance for the management, vegetation restoration, and tree species selection in karst rocky desertification areas. In this study, we used a two-factor block experiment and set different rainfall durations, namely reduced rainfall duration (I 3d ), natural rainfall duration (I 6d ), and extended rainfall duration (I 9d ); Different karst small habitats, i.e., stone-free soil (S 0 ), less stone and more soil (S 1/4 ), and half stone and half soil (S 1/2 ), are simulated at these three levels. Analyze the changes in physiological growth and photosynthetic characteristics in two coniferous seedlings under different treatments with different karst thicknesses.

Abstract:In recent years, global forests have been facing an increase in tree mortality owing to increasing droughts. However, the capacity for plants to adjust their physiology and biochemistry during extreme drought and subsequent recovery is still unclear. Here, we used 1.5-year-old Pinus massoniana Lamb. seedlings and simulated drought conditions to achieve three target stress levels (50%, 85%, and 100% loss of stem hydraulic conductivity (PLC)), followed by rehydration. Needle water status, gas exchange, and biochemical parameters were assessed during drought and recovery. The results showed that drought had significantly negative impacts on needle water status and gas exchange parameters, with gas exchange declining to 0 after PLC85 was achieved. Soluble protein concentration (SPC), soluble sugar concentration (SSC), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and needle water-use efficiency showed fluctuations. The activity of antioxidant enzymes and the values of osmotic regulators were then gradually decreased as the physiological and biochemical functions of seedlings were disturbed. Seedlings showed a stronger ability to recover from PLC50 than PLC85 and PLC100. We conclude that the physiological and biochemical recovery of P. massoniana seedlings is more likely to be inhibited when plants experience increasing drought stress that induces 85% and greater loss of hydraulic conductance.
