Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the motion of spiral waves in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) analytically and numerically. We find that the tip of the spiral wave drifts primarily in the direction of the electric field and there is a smaller component of the drift that is perpendicular to the field when a uniform field is applied to the system. The velocity of the tip is uniform and its component along the electric field is equal to the strength of the field. When the CGLE system is driven by white noise, a diffusion law for the vortex core of the spiral wave is derived at long time explicitly. The diffusion constant is found to be D=T/C(2), in which T is the noise strength and C is the core asymptotic factor of the spiral wave. When the external force is a simple oscillation we find that the tip of the spiral wave drifts if the frequency of the external force is the same as that of the system. Our analytical results are verified using numerical simulations.

Abstract:Multiple-spiral-wave solutions of the general cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in bounded domains are considered. We investigate the effect of the boundaries on spiral motion under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, for small values of the twist parameter $q$. We derive explicit laws of motion for rectangular domains and we show that the motion of spirals becomes exponentially slow when the twist parameter exceeds a critical value depending on the size of the domain. The oscillation frequency of multiple-spiral patterns is also analytically obtained.

Abstract:Using finite element simulation, we study the main features of rotating wave solutions of the cubic complex Ginzburg–Landau equation. To focus on the characteristics of the waves themselves, we have used a circular domain to avoid the effects of irregular boundaries; we have inhibited the formation of defects using an Archimedean wave centered at the origin as the initial condition, and we have chosen a domain size long enough to contain several spiral arms but not so long as to promote long-wave instabilities. This allows us to focus on the geometric features of the solutions often overlooked in traditional works with random initial conditions in large domains. We show with our simulations that the convective and absolute stabilities differ from those predicted for plane waves. Likewise, we show that the appearance of spirals and anti-spirals can occur in any of the quadrants of the parameter space and depends fundamentally on the initial conditions. Finally, regarding the stability of spiral waves against sideband disturbances, we show that the persistence of two-dimensional spiral waves, if fulfilled, does not correspond to the Eckhaus criterion. Our simulations allow us to corroborate the idea that two-dimensional spirals depend on the size of the domain and that they require new analytical results whose trends are identified in this work.

Abstract:We report a continuous transition from outwardly rotating spiral waves to antispirals in the complex Ginzburg- Landau equation. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the normal spiral to antispiral transition is fulfilled through a rest spiral wave with zero propagation speed. The propagation direction of spiral waves and the power law behaviour close to the transition boundary are examined.

Abstract:The multi-order exact solutions of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg–Landau equation are obtained by making use of the wave-packet theory. In these solutions, the zeroth-order exact solution is a plane wave, the first-order exact solutions are shock waves for the amplitude and spiral waves both between the amplitude and the shift of phase and between the shift of phase and the distance.

Abstract:The response of spiral waves to external perturbations in a stable regime of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) is investigated. It is shown that the spiral core has a finite mobility and performs Brownian motion when driven by white noise. Combined with simulation results, this suggests that defect-free and quasifrozen states in the noiseless CGLE are susceptible to unpaired vortex excitation at any nonzero noise strength.

Abstract:We prove the existence of $m$-armed spiral wave solutions for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in the circular and spherical geometries. We establish a new global bifurcation approach and generalize the results of existence for rigidly-rotating spiral waves. Moreover, we prove the existence of two new patterns: frozen spirals in the circular and spherical geometries, and 2-tip spirals in the spherical geometry.

Abstract:The drift behavior of spiral waves under the influence of a polarized electric field is investigated in the light that both the polarized electric field and the spiral waves possess rotation symmetry. Numerical simulations of a reaction-diffusion model show that the drift velocity of the spiral tip can be controlled by changing the polarization mode of the polarized electric field and some interesting drift phenomena are observed. When the electric field is circularly polarized and its rotation follows that of the spiral, the drift speed of the spiral tip reaches its maximal value. On the contrary, opposite rotation between the spiral and electric field locks the drift of the spiral tip. Analytical results based on the weak deformation approximation are consistent with the numerical results. We hope that our theoretical results will be observed in experiments, such as the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.

Abstract:Spiral dynamics in the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation (CGLE) with a feedback control are studied. It is shown that the spiral tip follows a circular pathway centered at the measuring point after some transients. The attractor radius is a piecewise constant function of the initial distance between the spiral tip and the measuring point, and a piecewise linear increasing function of the time delay in the feedback loop. Many bumps or lobes can be formed from the circular attractor if the time delay becomes relatively long, and the tip path becomes complex. With an increase in the positive feedback gain, the attractor is not changed, but the drift velocity of the spiral tip along such an attractor is linearly increased. When the gain is negative, the tip is attracted to the measuring point from its initial position if the initial distance is relatively small. Abstract:An effective method for controlling spiral turbulence in spatially extended systems is realized by introducing a spatially localized inhomogeneity into a two-dimensional system described by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Our numerical simulations show that with the introduction of the inhomogeneity, a target wave can be produced, which will sweep all spiral defects out of the boundary of the system. The effects exist in certain parameter regions where the spiral waves are absolutely unstable. A theoretical explanation is given to reveal the underlying mechanism.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of the domain size on the dynamics of the spiral wave drifting in reaction–diffusion media such as complex Ginzburg–Landau equation and Barkley model. We find that the boundary of the domain becomes the only attractor for the drifting spiral wave when the domain size is small enough. The minimum size of the domain supporting a sustained spiral wave can be determined in this way.

Abstract:It is well known that in the single-spiral-stable parameter regimes of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, spiral-domain patterns spontaneously appear. These patterns are disordered cells of frozen spiral waves well separated by thin walls (shocks), and to a good approximation, the walls are segments of hyperbolas. In this paper, we take a closer look at the global structure of spiral-domain patterns by using rigorous mathematical analysis and considering the unusual effect of the chirality (handedness) of spiral wave. An equation that determines the slope of the shock line is derived. We generalize this analytical method to study the interaction of a pair of spirals with different rotation frequencies, and obtain the geometrical structures of the shock line and the wave front of the invasion wave in transient processing.
Existence of spiral waves in oscillatory media with nonlocal coupling

Abstract:We prove existence of spiral waves in oscillatory media with nonlocal coupling. Our starting point is a nonlocal complex Ginzburg-Landau (cGL) equation, rigorously derived as an amplitude equation for integro-differential equations undergoing a Hopf bifurcation. Because this reduced equation includes higher order terms that are usually ignored in a formal derivation of the cGL, the solutions we find also correspond to solutions of the original nonlocal system. To prove existence of these patterns we use perturbation methods together with the implicit function theorem. Within appropriate parameter regions, we find that spiral wave patterns have wavenumbers, $\kappa$, with expansion $\kappa \sim C e^{-a/\varepsilon}$, where $a$ is a positive constant, $\varepsilon$ is the small bifurcation parameter, and the positive constant $C$ depends on the strength and spread of the nonlocal coupling. The main difficulty we face comes from the linear operators appearing in our system of equations. Due to the symmetries present in the system, and because the equations are posed on the plane, these maps have a zero eigenvalue embedded in their essential spectrum. Therefore, they are not invertible when defined between standard Sobolev spaces and a straightforward application of the implicit function theorem is not possible. We surpass this difficulty by redefining the domain of these operators using doubly weighted Sobolev spaces. These spaces encode algebraic decay/growth properties of functions, near the origin and in the far field, and allow us to recover Fredholm properties for these maps.

Abstract:A solution in the form of X-wave patterns of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a harmonic background inhomogeneity is obtained. The pattern can be attributed to the effects of the harmonic potential and the boundary configuration and size. By varying the harmonic of the background potential, the competition among three types of wave patterns: spiral, X, and target, is investigated by following the evolution of the Fourier modes.

Abstract:The rich dynamics of quantized vortices governed by the Ginzburg-Landau-Schrödinger equation (GLSE) is an interesting problem studied in many application fields. Although recent mathematical analysis and numerical simulations have led to a much better understanding of such dynamics, many important questions remain open. In this article, we consider numerical simulations of the GLSE in two dimensions with non-zero far-field conditions. Using two-dimensional polar coordinates, transversely highly oscillating far-field conditions can be efficiently resolved in the phase space, thus giving rise to an unconditionally stable, efficient and accurate time-splitting method for the problem under consideration. This method is also time reversible for the case of the non-linear Schrödinger equation. By applying this numerical method to the GLSE, we obtain some conclusive experimental findings on issues such as the stability of quantized vortex, interaction of two vortices, dynamics of the quantized vortex lattice and the motion of vortex with an inhomogeneous external potential. Discussions on these simulation results and the recent theoretical studies are made to provide further understanding of the vortex stability and vortex dynamics described by the GLSE.

Abstract:We investigate the spiral wave control in the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg–Landau equation. External drivings which are not resonant with spiral waves but with intrinsic system modes are used to successfully annihilate spiral waves and direct the system to various target states. The novel control mechanism is intuitively explained and the richness and flexibility the control results are emphasized.

Abstract:We studied spiral wave dynamics in an oscillatory reaction diffusion system. We find a new phenomenon: without the appearance of any global modulation mode, stable spiral waves break up directly. By investigating the one-dimensional version of the system and the isolated local dynamics, we find that the unstable focus in the local dynamics plays an important role. For different boundary conditions (BCs), we find a transition between spiral waves and traveling waves for periodic BCs and drifting spiral wave for no-flux BC.

Abstract:Considering that the fluid is inviscid and incompressible and the flow is irrotational in a fixed frame of reference and using the multiple scale analysis method, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) describing the evolution dynamics of gravity-capillary wavetrains in arbitrary constant depth. The gravity-capillary waves (GCWs) are influenced by a linear shear flow (LSF) which consists of a uniform flow and a shear flow with constant vorticity. The modulational instability (MI) of GCWs with the LSF is analyzed using the NLSE. The MI is effectively modified by the LSF. In infinite depth, there are four asymptotes which are the boundaries between MI and modulational stability (MS) in the instability diagram. In addition, the dimensionless free surface elevation as a function of time for different dimensionless water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity is exhibited. It is found that the decay of free surface elevation and the steepness of free surface amplitude change over time, which are greatly affected by the water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity.

Abstract:We present a detailed analytical and numerical study of nonequilibrium dynamics for the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. In particular, we characterize evolution morphologies using spiral defects. This paper (referred to as $\rm I$) is the first in a two-stage exposition. Here, we present analytical results for the correlation function arising from a single-spiral morphology. We also critically examine the utility of the Gaussian auxiliary field (GAF) ansatz in characterizing a multi-spiral morphology. In the next paper of this exposition (referred to as $\rm II$), we will present detailed numerical results.
