Abstract:Objective: To investigate the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea(OSA) syndromes and cardiac diseases by observing chronic effects of airway obstruction on dog left ventricular systolic function and changes of systemic oxidative stress and ATPase activity of myocardium. Methods: Repeated airway obstructions were made in anaesthetized dogs with permanent incision of trachea, and two-dimensional echocardiography were performed after three months. SOD activity and MDA content in serum were also examined, as well as Na +-K+ ATPase and Ca2+ ATPase activity in myocardium. Results: Chronic OSA leads to sustained decreases in LV systolic performance. Myocardial Na+-K+ ATPase and Ca2+ ATPase activity in OSA group decreased significantly (both P < 0.01) compared with that of the normal group respectively. Serum MDA content increased (P < 0.05) and SOD activity decreased (P < 0.05) compared with that of the normal group. Conclusion: There is a relationship between sleep apnea syndromes and the cardiovascular disease. The changes of systemic oxidative stress and ATPase activity of myocardium may, in part, explain the development of cardio-vascular disease during OSA.
