Abstract:Objective: To detect different activated patterns of heavy smokers in different states.(Methods:) Fifteen subjects including seven heavy smokers and eight non-smokers(control) were examined with functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) performing smoking-related visual cue tasks. The data were processed with SPM2.These different patterns were compared between the two groups. Results: ① In heavy smokers with 12 hours' deprivation of smoking, there was obvious activation in meso-limbic regions such as posterior hippocampus, thalamus and pallidum, but no obvious activation in those areas in the control group. At the same time, the fMRI signal of heavy smokers was greater than that of the control group(including bilateral anterior cingulated, superior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus).② After intravenous injection of nicotine, the fMRI signal of the heavy smokers after exposure to smoking-related images decreased and the non-smokers showed obvious activation in brain regions such as anterior cingulated, hippocampus, insula, superior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus.③ Both of the two groups showed activation in other brain regions such as cerebellum, occipital lobe, temporal lobe and parietal lobe. Conclusion: The reward circuit participated in the process of smoking addict. The smokers and the non-smokers have different response on fMRI in different conditions.
