Complications of tension-free vaginal tape surgery managed in stress urinary incontinence

Abstract:Purpose To discuss the complications of tension-free vaginal tape(TVT) surgery and the managements of the complications. Methods One hundred and ten female patients who were diagnosed as stress urinary incontinence and treated by TVT enrolled in this retrospective study.The follow-up time varied from 1 to 24 months.Complications during and after surgery,and their managements were analysed. Results Complications during surgery included bladder perforation in 2 patients(1.8%),hemorrhage(>100 ml) in 14 patients(12.7%) and urethral injury in 1 patient((0.9%)).Short-term(1 month) complications after surgery were dysuria in 9 patients(8.2%),urinary retention in 1 patient(0.9%),vaginal wound infection in 1 patient(0.9%),de novo urgency and frequency in 12 patients(10.9%).Long-term(6 months) complications after surgery include suprapubic discomfort in 8 patients((7.3%)),urinary difficulty in 2 patients(1.8%),frequency and urgency in 3 patients(2.7%),and no tape erosion was found.Most of the intraoperative and postoperative complications could be improved with proper treatments.Only 1 patient underwent the second surgical procedure to cut the tape due to urinary retention with poor effects of conventional treatments.Conclusions TVT surgery is an effective,safe minimally invasive procedure for female stress urinary incontinence.However,more information of related complications should be obtained by longer following up.
