Abstract:Objective To study effects on human ocular wavefront aberrations after different corneal refractive surgeries with excimer laser (LASIK,LASEK). Design Case-control study. Participants Forty-four patients (LASIK 43 eyes and LASEK 43 eyes) for refractive surgery. Methods Wavefront aberrations in subjects for LASIK or LASEK were examined before surgery and 1 month,3 months and 6 months after the surgery. Main Outcome Measures The changes of visual acuity, refraction and wavefront aberrations. Results There was no significant difference of postoperative visual acuity and equivalent sphere power between LASIK and LASEK subjects. One month after surgery,RMS value of total wavefront aberrations with 6mm pupil for all subjects was decreased 61% compared with that before surgery. RMS value of high order aberrations with 6mm pupil increased by 110% compared with that before surgery. There was an increase in the main high order aberrations, especially spherical aberrations. 1 month after surgery,RMS value of spherical aberrations rose by 285% compared with that before surgery. One and 3 months after surgery, the LASIK group had a little lower RMS value of the high order aberrations than the LASEK group, and a higher RMS value than the LASEK group 6 months after surgery (P>0.05); 1,3,and 6 months after surgery, the LASIK group had lower RMS values of coma and trefoil aberrations than the LASEK group, but a higher RMS value of spherical aberrations than the LASEK group (P>0.05). Conclusions The visual acuity and refraction are similar in LASIK and LASEK subjects. Total aberrations and low order aberrations decreased after the surgery, while high order aberrations increased, especially spherical aberrations. The effects of the surgical ways (LASIK,LASEK) on the high order aberrations after surgery do not have statistic significance. (Ophthalmol CHN ,2006,15: 191-194)
