Abstract:Natural dyes are known for their green and environmentally friendly characteristics. However, the narrow color spectrum of individual natural dyes limits their industrial application. The aim of this study is to broaden the color spectrum and create more color tones through the technique of sequential dyeing with two different dye materials. In this research, Caesalpinia sappan L. ( C. sappan ), a red dye, and Galla chinensis ( G. Chinensis ), a black dye, were used to dye cotton fabrics. The study systematically evaluated the dyeing behavior of C. sappan and G. Chinensis alone and through binary sequential dyeing method. Colorimetric parameters ( L *, a *, b *, C *, h° , and K/S ) were used to characterize the dyeing results and investigate the dyeing mechanism and color variation patterns. A preliminary assessment of dye stability indicated that the dyeing temperature and dyeing pH played a significant role in determining the main color tendency of C. sappan -dyed cotton fabrics. The results demonstrated that binary sequential dyeing with C. sappan and G. Chinensis dye effectively broadened the dyeing color spectrum. The overall color gamut ranges for a * were 2.97–34.40, for b * were − 4.03 to 13.93, for C * were 3.69–37.20, and for h° were 332.60–65.09. Through color tolerance value screening, the binary sequential dyeing with C. sappan and G. chinensis dye resulted in a total of 100 colors, belonging to 14 color tones. The binary sequential dyeing method also significantly improved the color fastness of the dyed cotton fabrics, with washing fastness improving from 3–4 to 4–5, rubbing fastness improving from 4 to 4–5, and light fastness improving from 3–4 to 4–5, meeting the standards for textile use. This study effectively expanded the color gamut of natural dyes through sequential dyeing, providing technical support for the industrial application and promotion of natural dyes.
