Abstract:We study shot noise for entangled electrons in a 4-lead beam-splitter with one incoming lead driven by adiabatically rotating magnetic fields. We propose a setup of an adiabatically rotating magnetic field which is appropriate for an electron beam to transport through. Using the scattering matrix approach, we find that shot noise for the singlet and that for the entangled triplet oscillates between bunching and antibunching due to the influence of the Berry phase. It provides us with a new approach for testing the Berry phase in electron transport on the basis of entanglement.

Abstract:We study shot noise for spin-polarized currents and entangled electron pairs in a four-probe (beam splitter) geometry with a local Rashba spin-orbit (s-o) interaction in the incoming leads. Within the scattering formalism we find that shot noise exhibits Rashba-induced oscillations with continuous bunching and antibunching. We show that entangled states and triplet states can be identified via their Rashba phase in noise measurements. For two-channel leads we find an additional spin rotation due to s-o induced interband coupling which provides enhanced spin control. We show that the s-o interaction determines the Fano factor which provides a direct way to measure the Rashba coupling constant via noise.

Abstract:Shot noise for entangled and spin-polarized states in a four-probe geometric setup has been studied by adding two rotating magnetic fields in an incoming channel. Our results show that the noise power oscillates as the magnetic fields vary. The singlet, entangled triplet and polarized states can be distinguished by adjusting the magnetic fields. The Berry phase can be derived by measuring the shot noise power.

Abstract:We investigate the shot noise of electron transport through an Aharonov–Casher ring subject to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Analytic expressions for the coefficients of reflection and transmission are derived by using the Griffith boundary conditions. For this kind of SOC, the ballistic transport of electrons can be analyzed as two independent spin channels, and both of them have the same transmission and reflection coefficients. The dependences of shot noise and Landauer-Büttiker conductance on controllable factors, including the strength of Rashba SOC, the asymmetrical angle of lead-connection positions, the radius of the rings, and the wave vector (or energy) of the incident Fermi electrons, are explicitly described by some new combined parameters. The ways that the shot noise and conductance vary with Rashba SOC and with asymmetrical angle are demonstrated by numerical simulations, respectively. It is revealed that the shot noise reaches its maximum for the particular situation of half transmission and half reflection and zero shot noise occurs at conductance maxima.
Rashba spin-orbit effect on shot noise in ferromagnetic/semiconductor/ferromagnetic heterojunctions

Abstract:Using the scattering approach, shot noise in ferromagnetic/semiconductor/ferromagnetic heterjunctions in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction has been studied theoretically. The quantum size effect, degree of spin-polarization, and Rashba spin-orbit interaction are considered simultaneously. The results indicate that the Fano factors for spin-polarized electrons oscillate strongly due to the influence not only of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling but also of the length of the semiconductor layer. For a certain length of semiconductor, the Fano factors can be determined by the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Further, it is found that the higher the degree of spin-polarization, the larger the Fano factors. These results may be useful in the measurement of Rashba spin-orbit coupling via shot noise.

Abstract:We study electron transport through a quantum dot, connected to non-magnetic leads, in a magnetic field. A super-Poissonian electron noise due to the effects of both interacting localized states and dynamic channel blockade is found when the Coulomb blockade is partially lifted. This is sharp contrast to the sub-Poissonian shot noise found in the previous studies for a large bias voltage, where the Coulomb blockade is completely lifted. Moreover, we show that the super-Poissonian shot noise can be suppressed by applying an electron spin resonance (ESR) driving field. For a sufficiently strong ESR driving field strength, the super-Poissonian shot noise will change to be sub-Poissonian.

Abstract:We study shot noise in tunneling current through a double quantum dot connected to two electric leads. We derive two master equations in the occupation-state basis and the eigenstate basis to describe the electron dynamics. The approach based on the occupation-state basis, despite being widely used in many previous studies, is valid only when the interdot coupling strength is much smaller than the energy difference between the two dots. In contrast, the calculations using the eigenstate basis are valid for an arbitrary interdot coupling. Using realistic model parameters, we demonstrate that the predicted currents and shot-noise properties from the two approaches are significantly different when the interdot coupling is not small. Furthermore, properties of the shot noise predicted using the eigenstate basis successfully reproduce qualitative features found in a recent experiment.

Abstract:We investigated the spin-dependent shot noise in a two-dimensional electron gas, which is modulated by a stripe of ferromagnetic metal and a stripe of Schottky metal under the influence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). It is found that the shot noise and the Fano factor are strongly spin dependent, and the current and the Rashba SOC can greatly enhance their spin polarization. The minima of the Fano factor approach 1/3, which can be interpreted by the collective contribution of noiseless open channels and Poissonian-noise closed ones in the transmission spectra.

Abstract:Using the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique, we study the current and shot noise spectroscopy of an interacting quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnetic leads with different polarizations in the Kondo regime. General formulas of current and shot noise are obtained, which can be applied in both the parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) alignment cases. For large polarization values, it is revealed that the behaviour of differential conductance and shot noise are completely different for spin up and spin down configurations in the P alignment case. However, the differential conductance and shot noise have similar properties for different spin configurations in the P alignment case with the small polarization value and in the AP alignment case with any polarization value.

Abstract:The nature of charge carriers in strange metals has become a topic of intense current investigation. Recent shot noise measurements in the quantum critical heavy fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ revealed a suppression of the Fano factor that cannot be understood from electron-phonon scattering or strong electron correlations in a Fermi liquid, indicating loss of quasiparticles. The experiment motivates the consideration of shot noise in a variety of theoretical models in which quasiparticles may be lost. Here we study shot noise in systems with co-existing itinerant electrons and dispersive bosons, going beyond the regime where the bosons are on their own in thermal equilibrium. We construct the Boltzmann-Langevin equations for the coupled system, and show that adequate electron-boson couplings restore the Fano factor to its Fermi liquid value. Our findings point to the beyond-Landau form of quantum criticality as underlying the suppressed shot noise of strange metals in heavy fermion metals and beyond.

Abstract:We investigate the joint effects of the intralead electron interaction and Coulombic dot–lead interaction on the shot noise of a quantum dot coupled to Luttinger liquid leads. A formula of the shot noise is derived by applying the nonequilibrium Green function technique. The shot noise is enhanced by the dot–lead interaction. For a weak or moderately strong interaction the differential shot noise demonstrates resonant-like behavior as a function of bias and gate voltages. In the limit of strong interaction resonant behavior disappears and the differential shot noise and Fano factor scale as a power law in bias voltage. Under some parameters, the differential shot noise may become negative around resonant peaks, and the physical reason is analyzed.

Abstract:The interplay of intralead and dot-lead Coulomb interactions on shot noise of a quantum dot coupled to Luttinger-liquid leads is systematically investigated in the Kondo regime. By equation of motion and canonical transformation methods, a general shot noise formula with transmission coefficient is derived, the factors of the above two types of interactions and on-dot Coulomb interaction being taken into account. Then we study in detail the shot noise and Fano factor as a function of bias voltage. Numerical results show for weak and moderately strong intralead Coulomb interactions, the dot-lead interaction not only helps to improve the shot noise, but also narrows the zero-bias Kondo dip. A series of polaron peaks appear in the differential shot noise when the renormalized parameter Y < 1, a combination effect of the intralead and dot-lead Coulomb interactions. For Y > 1, a novel type of excitonic dips appear only in the case of moderately strong intralead interaction. In the very strong intralead interaction limit, all features of excitonic peaks or dips disappear, and shot noise shows power-law dependence on the voltage with the renormalized exponent Y. The Fano factor is always sub-Poisson noise no matter whether Y is greater or less than 1.
Shot noise as a diagnostic in the $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall edge zoo

Abstract:The $\nu = 2/3$ filling is the simplest paradigmatic example of a fractional quantum Hall state, which contains counter-propagating edge modes. These modes can be either in the unequilibrated regime or equilibrated to different extents, on top of a possible edge reconstruction. In the unequilibrated regime, two distinct renormalization group fixed points have been previously proposed, namely Kane-Fischer-Polchinski and Wang-Meir-Gefen. In the equilibration regime, different degree of thermal equilibration may occur, while charge is fully equilibrated. Here, we show that this rich variety of models can give rise to three possible conductance plateaus at $e^2/2h$ (recently observed in experiments), $5e^2/9h$ (predicted here), and $e^2/3h$ (observed earlier in experiments) in a quantum point contact geometry. We identify different mechanisms for \emph{electrical shot noise} generation at these plateaus, which provides an experimentally accessible venue for distinguishing among the distinct models.

Abstract:We study theoretically the electrical shot noise properties of tunnel junctions between a normal metal and a superconductor with the mixture of singlet -wave and chiral triplet -wave pairing due to broken inversion symmetry. We investigate how the shot noise properties vary as the relative amplitude between the two parity components in the pairing potential is changed. It is demonstrated that some characteristics of the electrical shot noise properties of such tunnel junctions may depend sensitively on the relative amplitude between the two parity components in the pairing potential, and some significant changes may occur in the electrical shot noise properties when the relative amplitude between the two parity components is varied from the singlet -wave pairing dominated regime to the chiral triplet -wave pairing dominated regime. In the chiral triplet -wave pairing dominated regime, the ratio of noise power to electric current is close to both in the in-gap and in the out-gap region. In the singlet -wave pairing dominated regime, the value of this ratio is close to in the inner gap region but may reduce to about in the outer gap region as the relative amplitude of the chiral triplet pairing component is increased. The variations of the differential shot noise with the bias voltage also exhibit some significantly different features in different regimes. Such different features can serve as useful diagnostic tools for the determination of the relative magnitude of the two parity components in the pairing potential.

Abstract:We review recent studies of the shot noise of spin-polarized charge currents and pure spin currents in multiterminal semiconductor nanostructures, while focusing on the effects brought by the intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and/or extrinsic SO scattering off impurities in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) based devices. By generalizing the scattering theory of quantum shot noise to include the full spin-density matrix of electrons injected from a spin-filtering electrode, we show how decoherence and dephasing in the course of spin precession can lead to substantial enhancement of the Fano factor (noise-to-current ratio) of spin-polarized charge currents. In four-terminal SO-coupled nanostructures, injection of unpolarized charge current through the longitudinal leads is responsible not only for the pure spin Hall current in the transverse leads, but also for nonequilibrium random time-dependent current fluctuations. The analysis of the shot noise of transverse pure spin Hall current and zero charge current, or transverse spin current and non-zero charge Hall current, driven by unpolarized or spin-polarized injected longitudinal charge current, respectively, reveals a unique experimental tool to differentiate between the intrinsic Rashba and extrinsic SO mechanisms underlying the spin Hall effect in 2DEG devices. Finally, we discuss the shot noise of transverse spin and zero charge currents in the quantum-interference-driven spin Hall effect in ballistic four-terminal Aharonov-Casher rings realized using high-mobility 2DEG with the Rashba SO coupling.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to measure the lifetime and energy splitting of a pair of Majorana bound states at the ends of a superconducting nanowire by using the shot noise in a dynamical channel blockade system. A quantum dot is coupled to one end of the wire and connected with two electron reservoirs. It is found that a finite Majorana energy splitting tends to produce a super-Poissonian shot noise, while Majorana relaxation process relieves the dynamical channel blockade and suppresses the noise Fano factor. When the dot energy level locates in the middle of the gap of topological superconductor, the Fano factor is independent on Majorana lifetime and Majorana energy splitting is thus extracted. For a finite energy splitting, we could evaluate the Majorana relaxation rate from the suppression of Fano factor. Under a realistic condition, the expected resolution of Majorana energy splitting and its relaxation rate calculated from our model are about 1 mu eV and 0.01 - 1 mu eV, respectively. Abstract:In this paper, we present theoretical investigation of the zero-frequency shot noise spectra in electron tunneling through an interacting quantum dot connected to two ferromagnetic leads with possibility of spin-flip scattering between the two spin states by means of the recently developed bias-voltage and temperature dependent quantum rate equations. For this purpose, a generalization of the traditional generation-recombination approach is made for properly taking into account the coherent superposition of electronic states, i.e., the nondiagonal density matrix elements. Our numerical calculations find that the Fano factor increases with increasing the polarization of the two leads, but decreases with increasing the intradot spin-flip scattering.

The Photon-Assisted Shot Noise of a Strongly Correlated Quantum Dot Coupled to the Luttinger Liquid Leads

Abstract:The joint effects of an ac field and intralead interaction on shot noise of a Kondo quantum dot coupled to Luttinger liquid leads is investigated. A general photon-assisted zero-frequency shot noise formula is derived by use of the extended equation of motion of the nonequilibrium Green function. The photon-assisted shot noise demonstrates antiresonant-like behavior. The differential shot noise versus bias voltage exhibits steps the widths of which are just the ac frequency. With the increase of the intralead interaction, the antiresonances and step-structure are gradually smoothed and eventually disappear in the limit of the strong intralead interaction. In the limit, the shot noise scales as a power law in bias voltage, a signature of strong intralead interactions. The measurements of the photon-assisted zero-frequency shot noise can provide valuable information of the intralead interaction.

Abstract:We study the spin dynamics of two-dimensional electron gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling by taking account of electron-electron interactions. The diffusion equations for charge and spin densities are derived by making use of the path-integral approach and the quasiclassical Green's function. Analyzing the effect of the interactions, we show that the spin-relaxation time can be enhanced by the electron-electron interaction in the ballistic regime.

Abstract:We present a theoretical analysis of the effect of inelastic electron scattering on current and its fluctuations in a mesoscopic quantum dot (QD) connected to two leads, based on a recently developed nonperturbative technique involving the approximate mapping of the many-body electron-phonon coupling problem onto a multichannel single-electron scattering problem. In this, we apply the Büttiker scattering theory of shot noise for a two-terminal mesoscopic device to the multichannel case with differing weight factors and examine zero-frequency shot noise for two special cases: (i) a single-molecule QD and (ii) coupled semiconductor QDs. The nonequilibrium Green's function method facilitates calculation of single-electron transmission and reflection amplitudes for inelastic processes under nonequilibrium conditions in the mapping model. For the single-molecule QD we find that, in the presence of the electron-phonon interaction, both differential conductance and differential shot noise display additional peaks as bias-voltage increases due to phonon-assisted processes. In the case of coupled QDs, our nonperturbative calculations account for the electron-phonon interaction on an equal footing with couplings to the leads, as well as the coupling between the two dots. Our results exhibit oscillations in both the current and shot noise as functions of the energy difference between the two QDs, resulting from the spontaneous emission of phonons in the nonlinear transport process. In the "zero-phonon" resonant tunneling regime, the shot noise exhibits a double peak, while in the "one-phonon" region, only a single peak appears.
