Abstract:A new efficient four-ary (1,4) run-length limited (RLL) code is presented, which is intended for high density multi-level optical recording channels. By using proposed hybrid DC control scheme, the new code can achieve acceptable DC suppressing characteristics while maintaining high code rate. The bit error rate (BER) performances of this new code on blue laser recording systems are evaluated by using partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection. The feasibility of using four-ary RLL modulation and PRML detection is studied in this paper, and these techniques show great potential to be applicable in high-density multi-level optical recording channels.

Abstract:Multilevel recording with run-length limited (RLL) modulation is a novel way to significantly increase the recording density without changing the optical or mechanical units of current optical, disc systems. In this paper, a new efficient 4-ary RLL(2, 13) code with special constraint is designed for four-level RLL modulation on read-only digital versatile disc (DVD-ROM). This code can result in alternate multilevel pits and lands on the disc, and reduce the difficulty of multilevel disc replication. Further more, simulation results show the symbol error rate (SER) performance can be improved about 3 dB when the proposed code is used for optical recording channel with partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection.

Abstract:A new high efficient DC-free (2,8) run-length limited (RLL) code for four-level optical recording channels is proposed. The proposed code can be represented by a finite state diagram (FSM) with three states and implemented easily. The code rate and density ratio of the code are 5/6 bits/symbols and 2.50 bits/minimum-recorded-mark, respectively. On the basis of the experimental results, the performances of the code are evaluated by using partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) technology, which is suitable for detecting multi-level RLL signals. By using four-ary (2,8)RLL modulation and PRML technology, one can increase the recording density 66.7% relative to conventional binary RLL modulation currently used in digital versatile disc (DVD), meanwhile the bit error rate (BER) still be acceptable.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength and multi-level optical recording with photochromic materials is a novel way to increase recording density and data transfer rate significantly. Modulation codes for multi-wavelength and multi-level recording channel are discussed. Firstly, two-dimensional (2-D) run-length-limited (RLL) (dx,dy,k;n) codes are introduced for multi-wavelength recording. An example of 2-D RLL(1,1,6;2) code is shown to effectively combat the crosstalk in a two-wavelength recording model. Then, a DC-free four-ary RLL(2,8) code is designed with code rate of 8/10 (bits/symbol), and a partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detector is used for the four-level RLL(2,8) modulation recording channel. We also introduce 2-D RLL(M,1,∞) codes for the joint multi-wavelength multi-level recording channel. Some numerical results on the capacities are derived, and an example of 2-D (5,1,∞) code is constructed via state splitting algorithm. These proposed codes show great potential to be applicable in high-density 2-D and multi-level optical recording channels.

Abstract:Multilevel optical data storage is an important technology to improve the recording density of optical disc without changing the optical parameters. One approach is multilevel amplitude modulation, which uses the variance of signal amplitude of length-fixed recorded marks to record information. Another one is multilevel runlength-limited (RLL) modulation, which records information in both the signal amplitude and the length of recorded marks, thus can improve the recording density more effectively than the first way. Multilevel RLL coding is a key technology in multilevel RLL modulation optical recording. In this paper, a new 8-ary (1, 3) RLL code is designed with state splitting algorithm. The recording density of this code is as high as 3.0 bits/ symbol, and the encoder/decoder is simple and easy to implement. The proposed code can be used for future high density multilevel RLL modulation optical disc systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new four-ary run-length-limited (d, k) = (2, 12) code for multilevel optical recording channels. This code has a simple one-codeword look-ahead encoder and a sliding block decoder. The code rate is 4/5 (bits/symbol), and the density ratio is 2.4 bits/T-min, which is larger than that of binary codes used for typical optical recording systems. The encoding and decoding rules of the proposed code are simple and easy for implementation. With the bit error rate (BER) performance evaluation, this code shows feasible to be applied in high-density multilevel optical storage systems.

Abstract:Multi-level run-length limited(ML-RLL) cording can increase the capacity of CD to 2.4 times of the conventional CD.A model of ML-RLL recorded mark is introduced with scalar diffraction theory,and the readout signal of ML-RLL CD is calculated.It is recognized from simulation results that influence of the change of recorded mark length to the amplitudes of readout signal is little for ML-RLL recording.It is beneficial to separate detection of the width of the recorded mark from the detection of the length.But the boundary of recorded mark is difficult to distinguish for continuous 3T recorded marks with different widths.

Abstract:The existing optical data storage systems use binary recording mode,in which run-length-limited(RLL)codes have been broadly adopted to encode information in the length of recorded marks.Multi-level RLL is a new alternative scheme for optical recording,which uses multi-level RLL code to record information in both the length and the signal amplitude of the recorded marks.A hardware system is established to validate the logical circuit of a 4-level RLL(2,12)code,and the complexity of hardware realization of 4-level RLL(2,12)code is investigated.The experimental results indicate that multi-level RLL code can be realized with limited logical gates,and has high potential to be used for future optical data storage systems.

The code efficiency is high of 94.0%, and the density ratio is 2.0 bits per minimum recorded mark. The encoder has six states and the decoder window length is only two. This byte-oriented code is very suitable to be applied in practical multi-level read-only optical disc systems.

In this paper, the experimental results of four-level RLL modulation on read-only digital versatile discs (DVD-ROM) are introduced. Since multi-level readout signals have heavy inter-symbol interferences (ISI), partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection scheme is proposed for multi-level RLL DVD channels instead of slicer detector used in conventional DVD systems. By analyzing and comparing the simulation performances of different PRML schemes, we conclude that PR(1, 2, 2, 2,1) target is preferred to be applied in four-level RLL modulation DVD channels.

Abstract:Multilevel modulation coding is the core technology for multilevel optical storage. The technology is employed to increase the capacity of the read-only disc with no change on original recording symbols size. With the combination of multilevel modulation and the run-length limited modulation, short run-length with low levels can form long run-length with high levels while it also suitable for long run-length by short run-lengths. And the DC-suppression can be controlled by the allowance of long run-length without sacrifice effective bits. This double-modulation scheme not only can improve coding efficiency, but also can greatly increase the recording density. In this paper, the theory of multilevel run-length limited modulation coding is discussed. And a high rate of 6/7, five level ( 1,8) code scheme is proposed. This scheme can increase the recording density compared to that in of DVD. Therefore, it is expected that this proposed scheme could be used for the next high-density multilevel run-length limited modulation optical storage system.

The code rate of this code is 1/3, and the resulting density ratio is 1.67, which is larger than that of EFMPlus code used for digital versatile disc (DVD) systems. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the code is analyzed considering noise and channel jitter. The (4, 13) RLL code has very low complexity of hardware since the mapping rule is simple. The encoding and decoding circuits of the code are implemented using a complex programmable logic device (CPLD) chip.

Abstract:The multilevel run-length-limited (ML-RLL) modulation recording can improve the capacity and the data transfer rate of the optical disc without changing the optical and mechanical units. A viterbi detector with feedback is used to improve the performance of the partial-response maximum likelihood (PRML) system for ML-RLL optical recording. It can avoid the complexity of viterbi detector caused by the overlength of the memory length of the partial-response mode. The principle, implementation and the simulated results of the viterbi detector with feedback used in ML-RLL system are all presented.

In this paper, a new rate 6/9 RLL (2, 11) code with spaced pits/lands (SPL) constraint is designed for four-level read-only digital versatile disc (DVD). The SPL constraint is used to obtain alternate multi-level pits and lands on the disc, and reduce the difficulty of multi-level disc replication. Compared with the former four-level SPL-RLL code with the same code rate, this new code has smaller size of decoding window and smaller parameter k.

Abstract:Multilevel run-length-limited (ML-RLL) recording technology is employed to increase the capacity of the read-only disc with no change on optical or mechanical units. 4L-RLL recording on read-only disc has been implemented with minimum recorded mark length same as that in conventional digital versatile disc (DVD). The capacity of a double layer DVD disc with 4L-RLL (2, 10) modulation reaches 15 GB. Experimental results show that the ratio of the standard deviation of noise to the dynamic range of readout signal amplitude is lower than 4.53%, which means that the requirement of signal detection for 4L-RLL can be satisfied.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors investigate the performance of recently presented run-length limited (4, 18) code for high density optical storage systems. The construction of the code is described simply. The code has code rate R = 1/3 and density ratio ( DR ) = 1.67. The bit error rate (BER) performance for decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detector are simulated, considering signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and optical channel jitter. The result shows that the performance of the code is acceptable. The encoder and decoder of the code are implemented by complex programmable logic device (CPLD) chip and the hardware resources required for encoder and decoder are␣low.
