Abstract:To find the optimal expansion of the color gamut of a display, we investigated various 4-primary display systems based on DLP. Via comparing the volume of the color gamut in a 3-D uniform color space-CIELUV, the best 4-primary system on the premise of keeping the existing three primaries is brought forward.

Abstract:In using a laser light source, it becomes possible to realize an ultra-wide display gamut that approaches the human color vision limit. This paper introduces a method for extremely large gamut optimization for different primary numbers, and it offers a primary set that produces a nearly ultimate gamut. Considering display lightness. we calculated wavelength selection and lightness design of a display with 3-9 primaries in the CIELAB uniform color space (UCS) by optimizing the coverage of the optimal color gamut. Theoretically the maximum gamut area of a laser display with 3-12 primaries in the CIE xy and CIE u 'v' chromaticity diagrams is also calculated for comparison. We recommend 6 primaries as a reasonable choice, since the coverage reaches 97.6% of the optimal color. Taking into account the luminance efficacy of radiation (LER) and feasible laser wavelengths in practice, we get a practical design of wavelengths and power for a laser projection display with 6 primaries, which covers 96.6% of the optimal color gamut. Abstract:Via simulations we designed various multi‐primary systems, and investigated their effect on color rendering in order to find the largest expansion of the color gamut of a display. Abstract:Many kinds of display technology such as LCD, OLED, quantum dot and laser display are developing rapidly.. The final purpose of display technology is to achieve wider color gamut. Traditional method uses planar chromaticity diagram in CIEXYZ space to describe color gamut. This method did not use uniform color space and cannot deal with the situation of display systems with four or more primaries.. In our previous work, we have already established a theory based on Macadam's theory to calculate the stereoscopic color gamut for RGB laser display systems. In this letter, we extend this theory to display systems with four or more primaries. By using our algorithm, we calculate the stereoscopic color gamut of multi-primary display system. We set a four primary display system as an example. The center wavelength of the primary are set as 467nm, 520nm, 532nm and 630nm, white point is set as D-65(x=0.3127, y=0.3290), and color gamut has been calculated in CIELAB color space. Results show that when the ratio of the intensity of four primary is 1.0000: 0.7490: 0.4316: 1.5000, the largest gamut is obtained, whose value is 2.1030*10(6). These results can be used in engineering to optimize the intensity of the primaries in four primaries display systems.

Abstract:We propose omnidirectional reflective color filters based on metal-dielectric-metal subwavelength grating structure. By particle swarm optimization, the structural parameters of three color filters (yellow, magenta, cyan) are obtained. The optimized filters can present the same perceived specular color at unpolarized illumination for a broad range of incident angles. The reflectance curves at different incident angles keep almost invariable and the color difference is less than 6 in CIEDE2000 formula up to 45 degrees. Angle-insensitive properties including the incident angular tolerance, azimuthal angular tolerance and the polarization effect are investigated thoroughly to construct a real omnidirectional color filter. Through the analysis of the magnetic field, the physical origin is verified that the total absorption band at specific wavelength results from the localized surface plasmon resonance responsible for the angle insensitive spectral filtering. Abstract:The influence of the spectral transmission variation of the color wheel's filters on the display primary colors was analyzed based on the fundamental theory of the colourometry and the characteristics of the digital light processing(DLP) optical engine.The color wheel system was designed aiming at the colorimetric characteristics of the optical engine in the AMOI TM DL52HWT rear-projection TV.The experimental results show that our design can satisfy with the need of the TV display compared with the referenced system.

Abstract:The influence of color splitting system for liquid crystal projection display on color purity and color uniformity of an image is analyzed with color standards of 1931CIE and 1976CIE. The coatings design of the color splitting system is introduced. Compared with the typical color splitting coatings, the color purity, especially for green light, is obviously improved since the ripple in band of the optimized coatings is obviously reduced. The influence of aperture angle for illumination light on uniformity of the color splitting system is discussed and a color aberration correction by means of wedge coating with. gradient thickness is proposed, thus the color uniformity can be obviously improved.

Abstract:The color gamut volume (CGV) and light efficiency of a four-primary display system were theoretically simulated with different wavelength configuration. Given the wavelengths of the blue and red primaries, we optimized the other two primary colors; the wavelength set with the largest CGV was chosen. The maximum CGV, 2.346 x 106, was obtained at (660, 530, 507, 465) nm. The maximum light efficiency was also determined. A trade-off between CGV and light efficiency should be made according to the requirement of the devices. This study provides guidance for the construction of a four-primary laser display system and the optimization of the CGV in multi-primary display systems.& COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:To improve the color rendering ability in yellow color regions, the inclusion of yellow among the primary colors is commonly proposed. In this study, an algorithm for evaluating gamut enhancement in yellow regions is developed. The performance of different wavelength sets of RGBY four-primary system is studied theoretically in terms of various aspects, including the color gamut volume, gamut coverages, and gamut enhancement ratio in yellow regions. The optimal wavelength set and its optimal luminance ratio are then determined. This research provides strong guidance for the construction of practical four-primary-laser display systems.

Abstract:Large color gamut can be achieved using multi-primary system. Perceived color varies with different sub-pixel arrangement in multi-primary system. Paired comparison experiment has been carried out to study the influence of sub-pixel arrangement of four-primary system. A novel color conversion method has been put forward to achieve unique control signals and fast color conversion in the multi-primary system. With this novel color conversion method, the displayed images in four-primary system for the experiment were obtained. Results show that difference is not statistically significant between different sub-pixel arrangements and structures. With different additional primary, sub-pixel preference is similar. Influence of image content on the results is also not statistically significant.

Abstract:Known from the color reproduction principle of chromaticity theory,the color uniformity of multi-DLP projection display wall is decided by primary colors′ coordinates and their luminance of each display unit.The common color uniformity calibration is used to adjusting the luminance of the primary colors.Such method can′t remove the aberration ultimately.Here a new method of color uniformity calibration is introduced.The method is to reduce the color space and obtain a new color triangle which is included in all projectors′ color space for the goal of the calibration.The color space conversion matrix in each projector is rebuilt in order to convert the primary colors′ coordinates to the new color space.Combined with the luminance adjustment,the display wall can remove the aberration ultimately in theory.

Abstract:For a display system, a wide-color gamut can significantly improve the viewing experience. It is known that an ultra-wide color gamut can be achieved using more primaries. However, for multi-primary displays (MPDs), choosing the parameters of the primaries (e.g., wavelength and luminance) is not trivial because the necessary theoretical foundation is still lacking. In this study, starting from three-primary display, we proposed a method for calculating all possible peak luminances of MPDs. This is done by mathematically representing the added new primaries with the original three primaries. Of all the possible results, by optimizing the peak luminance of each primary color, the theoretical gamut volume satisfying specific requirements could be obtained. The method provided can be extended to N primaries (N > 6). Using this method, we have successfully built a six-primary display system and used it to verify the validity of the method. Combined with the calculation of color gamut volume, the theoretical framework provided can be used to guide the selection of wavelength, spectrum width, and luminances of primaries in MPDs.

Abstract:This paper introduces the Munsell color system and Pointer color system, and uses the algorithm to calculate the three-dimensional color gamut volume. In addition, we have tested a Toshiba display and got the data in three-dimensional color gamut, then hold the gamut that eyes can perceive as a denominator, and calculate the color gamut coverage respectively. This study provides some reference value for extending color gamut in three dimensions later.

Abstract:Color gamut indicates the ability to display colors for a display system. Measurement of the color gamut in three-dimensional color space is important for a display system. Compared with primary triangle in CIE xy or CIE u’v’ chromaticity diagram, the influence of brightness is considered, and the three-dimensional color space is more uniform, which is closer to the actual situation of the display system [1]. In this paper, using a colorimeter, we propose a new method to measure the gamut of three primary display system by measuring some feature points. They are located on vertexes, edges and surfaces of the three-dimensional gamut boundary. Based on these feature points, the profile of the gamut is drawn in CIExyY and CIELAB space. To calculate the color gamut of the display system, Traditional method is to calculate the area of the primary triangle in CIE xy or CIE u’v’ chromaticity diagram. CIE recommended the Segment Maxima algorithm to calculate color gamut [2]. The specific process is to sample three primaries through many images, then select outermost points of the color gamut and connect into boundaries in CIELAB color space. However, it has not been reported that the gamut volume could be measured by a colorimeter. Compared with the algorithm, our measurement method is relatively efficient. The accurate gamut of color solid is obtained in CIELAB space. In general display equipment, the intensity of each primary is divided into 256 gradients (which are not nonlinear corresponding to the lightness value). 1. Seven vertexes of color solid which are (0, 0, 255), (0, 255, 0), (255, 0, 0), (0, 255, 255), (255, 0, 255), (255, 255, 0), (255, 255, 255), meaning that one or more primaries have the maximum outputs. 2. To improve the accuracy, points also need to be taken on the edges of color solid between two vertexes for measurement. The bisection points between two vertexes are (128, 0, 0), (0, 128, 0), (0, 0, 128), (0, 255, 128), (255, 0, 128), (255, 255, 128), (0, 128, 255), (255, 128, 0), (255, 128, 255), (128, 0, 255), (128, 255, 0), (128, 255, 255). The measurement is performed in a dark room. The required colors are generated by software Microsoft paint and MATLAB. CS-2000 colorimeter of Konica Minolta is used to measure the coordinates with the perspective of 0.2°. The coordinates of each color are measured for many times and the average value is taken. We measure the color gamut of three primary laser display system and LCD computer screen in CIELAB space as an example. We compare the results with gamut volume by theoretical calculation in CIELAB space [3]. The results are shown in CIELAB space in Fig. 1.

Abstract:In this paper, an ultranarrow, high-efficiency color filter based on a two-dimensional grating nanostructure array is realized by a tandem inverse design network. The tandem inverse designed network is generated by connecting an inverse network with a pre-trained forward network. The tandem convolutional neural network successfully overcame the non-uniqueness problem of the training data. The performance of the networks is verified by a test set of 2592 data points, and the average MSE of the prediction results of the tandem network is 1.01 x 10-3. Extremely low error indicates that the tandem network can learn and capture the distribution characteristics of the transmission spectrum and give a reasonable design of the structural parameters. Finally, we obtained multiple inverse-designed transmissive color filters with ultranarrow linewidths and high efficiency, with central wavelengths between 480 nm and 630 nm. The linewidth and efficiency of each kind of color filter are less than 10.6 nm and higher than 60%. Narrow linewidths and wide wavelength tunability result in high color accuracy and a broad color gamut of the filters. The filters with two-dimensional metallic nanostructure array also show polarization-independent characteristics. Compared with the traditional method, this method can quickly and accurately design the structural parameters corresponding to the spectral response, which provides a new method for the nanostructure design.

Abstract:The circadian effect and photobiological safety of the display should be concerned, as well as the color gamut. By adding another primary color to the traditional blue-green-red (RGB) direct emission display, a four-primary-color display was proposed. The display presents wide color gamut and high stability with variation of primary colors. The optimal color gamut coverage (CGC) in Rec. 2020 standard reaches 98.2 %, and it also maintains above 96.5 % with 20 nm variation of peak wavelengths and full widths at half maximum (FWHMs). At D65 white point, the melanopic efficacy of luminous radiation (MELR) of four-primary-color display decreases to 0.60, which is 29.4 % and 43.9 % less than liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, respectively. Presenting ten reference colors, the MELRs of four-primary-color display are also less than other displays in most cases. In addition, the blue light hazard efficiency of radiation (BLHER) of four-primary-color display is slightly less than other displays. At last, the further improvement for the four-primary-color display was discussed.

Abstract:To improve the color gamut rendering ability in yellow region, a prototype of a four-primary laser-projection display system with wavelengths set at 465, 525, 532 and 638 nm was demonstrated. An color gamut mapping algorithm suit for four-primary system was proposed, and the improved ability was verified by conducting a psychophysical experiment using a human-eye test, confirming that the performance of the image with a high-saturation yellow color was excellent. Moreover, the improved display performed well regarding color preference. This research provides strong guidance for producing four primary laser display systems commercially.

Abstract:When we place a colored filter in front of a camera the effective camera response functions are equal to the given camera spectral sensitivities multiplied by the filter spectral transmittance. In this paper, we solve for the filter which returns the modified sensitivities as close to being a linear transformation from the color matching functions of human visual system as possible. When this linearity condition - sometimes called the Luther condition - is approximately met, the `camera+filter' system can be used for accurate color measurement. Then, we reformulate our filter design optimisation for making the sensor responses as close to the CIEXYZ tristimulus values as possible given the knowledge of real measured surfaces and illuminants spectra data. This data-driven method in turn is extended to incorporate constraints on the filter (smoothness and bounded transmission). Also, because how the optimisation is initialised is shown to impact on the performance of the solved-for filters, a multi-initialisation optimisation is developed. Experiments demonstrate that, by taking pictures through our optimised color filters we can make cameras significantly more colorimetric.

Abstract:Based on the difference between multi-primary displays (MPDs) and three-primary displays, we propose a new definition for evaluating the color gamut volume (CGV) to explore the upper limit of MPDs, which could theoretically represent all colors that MPDs can display. The proposed definition corrects the defects in the L*a*b* color space that arise when calculating the CGV of MPDs. In view of the high computational complexity of this method, we propose a simplified scheme with a small margin of error. Additionally, we verify the new definition with experiments on a six-primary projector. This method is helpful in guiding the selection of light sources and the evaluation of MPDs, and also has great reference value to calculate the target gamut for gamut mapping in MPDs.

Abstract:Optimization of filters for color blindness management was investigated to improve color vision on display devices. A model for simulation of CVD was built based on display primaries, twostage theory of human color vision and spectral filtration of filters. Spectral filtration of filters made of dye, nanostructures and multi‐layer dielectric filters was surveyed with varying primaries. Quantitative evaluation system of color contrast and naturalness were introduced into filter studies to optimize perceptual experience in both personal and public display products.
