Abstract:The lack of optical buffer is still one of the main problems that hinder the development of all optical networks. One approach to this problem is to emulate the behavior of optical buffers by using optical switches and fiber delay lines (SDL). Current works on this topic have demonstrated the feasibility of constructing SDL-based First In First Out (FIFO) buffer, Priority buffer, etc. The Last In First Out (LIFO) buffer is another important network component for congestion control and QoS guarantee, and parallel and cascade architectures have been peoposed for the efficient design of such optical buffer. The recent work in showed that it is possible to use M fiber delay lines (FDLs) to construct a LIFO buffer of size B = (3/2) · 2M/2 - 1 and B = 2(M+1)/2 - 1 when M is even and odd, respectively. In this paper, we improve the work in [3] by providing a more efficient construction of SDL-based optical LIFO buffer. We first show that with a single stage feedback structure consisted of one (M + 1) × (M + 1) crossbar switch and M FDLs connecting M outputs of the crossbar back to M its inputs, we are able to construct a LIFO buffer of size B = 2 · 2M/2 - 2 and B = (3/2) · 2(M+1)/2 - 2 when M is even and odd, respectively. This is achieved through adopting a properly delay length setting for each FDL and a careful packets scheduling among FDLs, as well as exploiting the nice function of simultaneous packet reading and witting a FDL can support. We further show that if we adopt a cascade of smaller switches rather than a single (M+1)×(M+1) big switch, the new LIFO design can be implemented with much lower complexity in terms of the total number of basic 2 × 2 switch elements.

Abstract:We focus on non-conflicting construction of an optical multistage feedforward network to emulate the N-to-1 output buffer multiplexer by using switched fiber delay line (SDL). In [1], Y.T. Chen et al. presented a sufficient condition (an upper bound) for the number of delay lines required for such a multiplexer with variable length bursts. In this paper, we first give an improved tipper bound. Then we develop a framework to construct an arrival case of bursts which can be used to achieve a necessary condition (a lower bound). These results are further extended to the feedforward construction of N-to-N output buffer switch. Through simulation and performance comparison, we find that the new bounds can significantly decrease the hardware cost for constructing both the feedforward SDL-based multiplexer and output buffer switch while still provide the same performance as that of the old ones.

Abstract:The lack of optical buffer is still one of the main problems that hinder the development of all optical networks. Recently, Huang et al. [1] introduced a recursive construction for the LIFO buffer, which requires no less than 9 log(2) B FDLs to build such a buffer of size B. In this paper, we first show that by a proper FDL grouping and a suitable FDL length assignment for each FDL-group, we need approximately 3 log(2) B FDLs to emulate a LIFO buffer of size B. We then demonstrate that if a careful packet scheduling among FDL-groups is adopted, this number of FDLs can be further reduced to 2 log(2) B.

Abstract:Shared-memory optical packet (SMOP) switch architecture is very promising for significantly reducing the amount of required optical memory, which is typically constructed from fiber delay lines (FDLs). The current reservation-based scheduling algorithms for SMOP switches can effectively utilize the FDLs and achieve a low packet loss rate by simply reserving the departure time for each arrival packet. It is notable, however, that such a simple scheduling scheme may introduce a significant packets out of order problem. In this paper, we first identify the two main sources of packets out of order in the current reservation-based SMOP switches. We then show that by introducing a "last-timestamp " variable and modifying the corresponding FDLs arrangement as well as the scheduling process in the current reservation-based SMOP switches, it is possible to keep packets in-sequence while still maintaining a similar delay and packet loss performance as the previous design.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient contention resolution scheme based on FDL buffering and TWC conversion is proposed. The scheme effectively utilizes the simplicity of forward FDL buffer, the flexibility of feedback FDL buffer, the capacity of wavelength conversion and signal regeneration of TWCs, and the reconfiguration of broadcast-and-select space switch. An analytical model characterizing the behavior of the scheme is proposed. And on the basis of the model, the paper has analyzed the scheme performance in terms of packet loss probability and mean packet delay. The simulation results show that the scheme substantially outperforms other schemes.

Abstract:Buffers are essential components of any packet switch for resolving contentions among arriving packets. Currently, optical buffers are composed of fiber delay lines (FDL), whose blocking and delay behavior differ drastically from that of conventional RAM at least two-fold: 1) only multiples of discrete time delays can be offered to arriving packets; 2) a packet must be dropped if the maximum delay provided by optical buffer is not sufficient to avoid contention, this property is called balking. As a result, optical buffers only have finite time resolution, which may lead to excess load and prolong the packet delay. In this paper, a novel queueing model of optical buffer is proposed, and the closed-form expressions of blocking probability and mean delay are derived to explore the tradeoff between buffer performance and system parameters, such as the length of the optical buffer, the time granularity of FDLs, and to evaluate the overall impact of packet length distribution on the buffer performance.
Advanced Labeling Schemes for Future Optical Switching Network

Abstract:All-optical label switching (AOLS) is a potential technique which is introduced to fully use the bandwidth capacity in future optical networks and the packet operations are mostly carried out in the optical layer. The key issue in the AOLS approach is the method of coding the optical label onto the packet as it directly determines the structure and the performance of the optical core router as well as the channel bandwidth efficiency and the transmission quality of the packet and its label. With the bit rate increasing above 40Gb/s, new labeling scheme is needed to enhance the spectral efficiency. In this paper, recent advanced labeling schemes for future high speed AOLS network are reviewed, especially the new schemes demonstrated in Tsinghua University, China. Two novel labeling scheme based on vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation are mainly introduced both in principle and experiment. One is compact wavelength labeling scheme which achieves high spectral efficiency since the wasteful double sideband of 40Gb/s has been reduced to vestigial sideband. This scheme can be easily carried out by using optical filters. Another is polarization shift keying scheme with VSB payload which has high spectral efficiency near to 0.8bit/s/Hz. This scheme utilizes two polarization orientations to carry the label signal and causes little distortions between the label and payload. And this scheme is also independent of the payload bit rate which is a good character for future networks. Both the two schemes have little power penalties after long distance SMF transmission and are promising to be used in beyond 40Gb/s optical networks.

Abstract:Optical buffering is one of the essential functions in optical packet switching (OPS) network. This letter employs optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) signals of spectral-amplitude-coding (SAC) in a packet-buffering architecture. In the proposed scheme, the original OCDMA label of the incoming packet is identified and converted to a new label by a code-switching system. As multiple packets overlap in the time domain in a single device, SAC is adopted for packet encoding to avoid multiple access interference (MAI). The concepts of queuing system and Gaussian approximation are employed to model the buffer architecture. Simulations were conducted to demonstrate the tradeoff between packet dropping probability and the signal variations in the label identification process. The buffering performance in terms of bit-error rate (BER) is examined. The results show SAC labels perform well on packet buffering.

Abstract:A novel technique for optical labeling of payloads and labels using optical single-sideband modulation is proposed. This method can effectively reduce the bandwidth of optical signal and utilize the low frequency RF devices to generate the labels. And we also investigate the power and phase character of this scheme. Simulation results show that this scheme is robust to the phase differences of the single-sideband payload and label. After fiber transmission and label swapping, the power penalties of payload and label are both less than 1dB. Therefore this scheme is suitable for 40Gb/s optical label switching networks.

Abstract:Proposed in this paper is a novel packet-level self-synchronization scheme for slotted optical packet-switched networks (OPNs), where a clock denoting the beginning of each packet is extracted to perform address recognition, ultra-fast optical sampling, or payload delineation. The effect of self-phase modulation (SPM) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and the interfering characteristics of Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) are combined to make the proposal simple, fast and integrable, with no special treatment at wavelengths, polarization, intensity, or bit-period of the marker pulses.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new concept of optical packet/burst switching suitable for generalized multiprotocol label switched (GMPLS)-based optical networks. In such networks, optical labeled switched paths are being established in a similar way as label-switched paths in MPLS. We use a wavelength label as well as an orthogonally modulated label, with respect to the payload modulation format, and which is encoded using either frequency-shift keying (FSK) or differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Wavelength is used for switching in the node, whereas the orthogonal label defines the label-switched path. We present both simulation and experimental results to assess transmission performance of the proposed combined modulation scheme. In addition, we propose a suitable optical node architecture that can take advantage of this stacked label concept. Toward this, we use widely tunable wavelength converters to efficiently route IM/FSK (or IM/DPSK) optically labeled packets in an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG)-based node structure. We present performance simulation results in terms of packet loss ratio and internal block probability. Internal blocking is an inherent problem of AWG optical routers, and a specific wavelength assignment algorithm has been developed to minimize it. Finally, the feasibility of IM/FSK transmission is experimentally demonstrated over an 88-km single-mode fiber span, and novel aspects of FSK generation and detection techniques are presented.

Abstract:A novel vestigial-sideband (VSB) payload scheme is proposed for high-speed all-optical label-switching (AOLS) networks. The combination and separation of the VSB payload and the optical label is experimentally demonstrated, and the influences of the power-split ratio, time-delay interference, interferometric noise (IN), and wavelength difference between the payload and the label are analyzed. Simulation and experiment results show that this VSB payload scheme can highly reduce the channel bandwidth and it is easy to realize by using optical filters, so it is a potential technique to be used in optical networks with bit rate of 40 Gb/s.

Abstract:All-optical switching has been considered as a natural choice to keep pace with growing fiber link capacity. One key research issue of all-optical switching is the design of optical buffers for packet contention resolution. One of the most general buffering schemes is optical priority queue, where every packet is associated with a unique priority upon its arrival and departs the queue in order of priority, and the packet with the lowest priority is always dropped when a new packet arrives but the buffer is full. In this paper, we focus on the feedback construction of an optical priority queue with a single (M+2)× (M+2) optical crossbar Switch and M fiber Delay Lines (SDL) connecting M inputs and M outputs of the switch. We propose a novel construction of an optical priority queue with buffer 2^Θ(√(M)), which improves substantially over all previous constructions that only have buffers of O(M^c) size for constant integer c. The key ideas behind our construction include (i) the use of first in first out multiplexers, which admit efficient SDL constructions, for feeding back packets to the switch instead of fiber delay lines, and (ii) the use of a routing policy that is similar to self-routing, where each packet entering the switch is routed to some multiplexer mainly determined by the current ranking of its priority.
A novel O/E/O storage based contention resolution strategy for optical burst switching networks

Abstract:To reduce burst drop probability is a key issue in optical burst switching networks for it was connected strongly with the network's overall performance. In this paper, we propose a novel O/E/O conversion and electronic storage based strategy to resolve burst contention. Unlike traditional FDLs based contention resolution which is only able to provide discrete buffering time, O/E/O storage based strategy can offer unlimited buffering time. We propose an intermediate node architecture and corresponding scheduling algorithm called Nearest Available Void (NAV). Simulations show that our novel burst contention resolution enjoys high contention resolution capability and only introduce extremely low extra delay time compared to FDLs based mechanism. The maximum electronic RAM demand is also studied, and the result shows that the demand is comparatively small, which implies the cost of this strategy can be economic.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel optical packet switching scheme with one core router and two edge routers, in which an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is generated as a label. In this experiment there are two transmission spans, each span consists of 50-km SMF-28 and an erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier (EDFA) without dispersion management. A 10Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) optical payload and a 2.5Gb/s OFDM optical label are generated, encapsulated, and transmitted in the first span. And then old label is replaced by new label, the generated new optical packet after transmission over the second span is detached and detected. The transmission performance of the optical label and payload is experimentally investigated at the ingress router, core router and egress router.

Abstract:A novel optical packet switching scheme,in which an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OOFDM) signal is generated as a label,is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.The 10 Gb/s OOK optical payload and the 2.5 Gb/s OFDM optical label are produced by intensity modulation of two continuous waves with different wavelength,respectively.In the experiment,the eye diagrams of the payload,constellation diagrams of the label and the BER curves of the label and payload are obtained,when the optical packets were transmitted on optical fiber or not.It is experimentally demonstrated that the power penalties for the payload and the label after 10 km fiber transmission are 1 dB and 0.5 dB, respectively.The scheme is easy to implement,so it can be used in an optical label switched network.
