An adaptive buffer management policy for video telephone over WLAN

Abstract:This paper proposes an adaptive buffer management policy to achieve inter-stream and intra-stream synchronization for video telephone over WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). The policy smoothes the variation of end-to-end delay through dynamically managing queuing delay of incoming video frames, and eliminates the delay bound of video/audio communication by controlling queue length. Moreover, a Virtual Play Clock (VPC) is introduced in the intra-stream synchronization, which provides reference clock for both video/audio frames and buffer management. Since the policy proposed in this paper does not rely on the global synchronization clock and any information about network and frames or coding methods, it's compatible with diverse coding standards and multiple types of transmission environment. It is also suitable for the adaptive synchronization of the media stream services.
