Abstract:We propose a novel implementation of true-time delay (TTD) using air-guiding photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs) and a broadband light source. The air-guiding PBGFs are experimentally studied and used in the TTD module for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The proposed approach shows the advantages of simple architecture, compact size, larger dispersion, low-temperature sensitivity, and high immunity to nonlinear effects in our experiments. The PBGFs were spliced with single-mode fibers with a 2 dB loss, and the characteristics of the PBGFs were measured. The PBGF-TTD with a continuously tunable time delays from 0 to 500 ps was demonstrated using the amplified spontaneous emission light of an erbium-doped filter amplifier as a broadband light source.

Abstract:Optical sensors, such as fiber interferometers transmit along light paths and perform measurements based on optical path difference. These types of sensors can reduce device volume and improve sensing performance using optical multiplexing. A beam splitter for optical path multiplexing in an optical fiber ring is proposed. A photonic crystal was used to design the beam splitter. By optimizing and improving the photonic crystal microstructure, the beam splitting function can be realized while taking into account the cycling capability. Therefore, the light can recirculate multiple times in the fiber ring to realize light path multiplexing. The finite difference time domain method is used to analyze and evaluate the performance of the beam splitter.

Abstract:Photonic true time delay (TTD) systems based on optical dispersive devices suffer from RF power degradation induced by dispersion. When the dispersion value is 100 ps/nm, the -3 dB bandwidth are limited to 17.6 GHz and 4.4 GHz for systems using lasers and broadband light sources, respectively. A multichannel chirped fiber grating is used to mitigate the RF power degradation in a dispersion-based TTD link for the first time. Both the experimental and theoretical results show that the degradation can be completely eliminated by using this method.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:We report on the realization of optical true-time delay (TTD) by a two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide (PCWG). Design and fabrication of the PCWG are investigated. The spectral dependence of the group delay is measured by detecting the phase shifts of a 10 GHz modulating signal, and a maximum delay of 25 +/- 2.5 ps is obtained.

Abstract:A Gires–Tournois interferometer (GTI) with large dispersion compensation was designed and fabricated according to the requirement of the Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser system. The designed GTI can provide an average group delay dispersion (GDD) of −1500 fs 2 and a high reflectance (>99.7%) from 1030 to 1050 nm. The Ion-assisted Deposition (IAD) technique was utilized to manufacture the mirror. Good agreement between the measured and designed results both for reflectance and GDD was achieved. The reflectance during 1030–1050 nm was above 99.5% and the GDD ripple was less than ±300 fs 2 . The GTI was used both in the intracavity dispersion compensation and extracavity pulse compression for the Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser system. A mode-locked soliton pulse with a 506-fs duration was recorded. An extracavity pulse compression test showed that the GTI had identical pulse compression capability as the conventional grating pairs while the energy loss was obviously reduced. Our results demonstrated that the HDM, which was able to provide quite a large amount of negative dispersion (∼−8×10 4 fs 2 ), could be an ideal alternative to replace the dispersive compensating grating pairs for the dispersion compensation of the Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser system.

Abstract:A high resolution optical true-time delay (OTTD) beamformer constructed by fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and highly dispersive fiber (HDF) is presented. It can produce the true time delay with the resolution of 1 ps. Besides the proposed system has compact structure and light weight even when a large number of antenna elements are present in a practical antenna array, this is because the used FBG fibers and HDFs are short and independent of the antenna element number. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are made. Proof-of-concept experiment results that demonstrate the feasibility of the system are presented. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A fully integrated optical true time delay (OTTD) module based on optical wavelength router is designed and fabricated.Two 16 × 16 arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGR) with channel spacing of 1.6 nm are cascaded with a group of waveguide delay lines to form the module.The experimental result shows that this module has excellent performance,the device crosstalk at working wavelengths is lower than-27 dB,and the insertion loss is about 12 dB at peak wavelength end to end.The optical delay increment of (6.24 ± 0.4) ps is measured experimentally by vector network analyzer.Two AWGR and delay line array of the module are integrated on the silicon substrate.This device is fabricated with silicon dioxide waveguide and the whole size is 3.5 cm× 3.5 cm.

Abstract:The design of some communication systems requires the implementation of time delays within the system. As a result, the system design often becomes more complex and/or the system size is increased when the delay is accomplished by digitizing the RF analog signal or using RF transmission lines cut to the length necessary to accomplish the time delay. This time delay can be accomplished with a variety of optics technologies, which could be readily fabricated and integrated into the communication system without significant impacts on the system design. This paper describes three different potential applications of optics designs, which could be implemented to accomplish the time delay requirements associated with communication system.

Abstract:True time-delay line with a high resolution and wide range is proposed and demonstrated. Tunable lasers and dispersion fibers are employed to control the time delay coarsely. An optical spectrum processor is utilized to realize high-resolution time-delay control by adding a quadratic optical phase shift, which compensates the group velocity dispersion of the fiber simultaneously. A coarse tuning range of 1717 ps is realized by changing the wavelength of the optical carrier, and a high resolution of 0.67 ps is achieved by translating the symmetry axis of the quadratic phase shift.

Abstract:A compact high frequency true time delay (TTD) beamformer using bidirectional reflectance of the fiber gratings (FGs) is proposed. The FGs can be a set of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) or chirped fiber gratings (CFGs). The number and the length of the time delay lines are greatly reduced compared to the previous systems. A phase array antennas system using this TTD beamformer has many advantages including being compact, low requirement on the bandwidth of the tunable laser source and working at high microwave frequency. Abstract:In this paper, we propose integrated one-dimensional (1D) grating waveguide-based true-time delay (TTD) lines on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Through optimizing the structure of the proposed waveguide, a time delay of 77.23 ps/mm can be readily achieved in a wavelength tuning range from 1540.20 nm to 1558.97 nm. Compared to conventional photonic crystal waveguide-based TTDs, the proposed waveguide occupies 70% less chip surface and has much lower propagation loss when compared with 2D photonic crystal devices. Therefore, a larger time delay can be achieved on-chip. To facilitate low loss coupling from strip waveguides to 1D grating waveguides and vice versa, a novel step taper is designed and shows a coupling efficiency of over 78%. Based on the 1D grating waveguide, a 1×4 beam steering module is designed and simulated. A wide beam steering angle from -67.84° to 67.84° for the X-band four-element phased array antenna with an array pitch size of 1.25 cm is obtained.

Abstract:A true time delay (TTD) unit based on discrete fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the phased array antenna (PAA) beamforming system is further investigated using the wave interference theory. The theoretical analysis shows that a PAA system using the TTD unit based on discrete FBGs can work at high frequency as long as the FBGs can be manufactured in high precision.

Abstract:The basic properties including physical properties and absorption spectrum were measured firstly. Then the chromatic dispersion of air-guiding photonic band-gap fibers (PBGF) was measured with phase-shift method and pulse delay method, from experimental results we can see that their test results are accordant. The differential group delay (DGD) of the PBGF was also measured with a method of Sagnac interferometer. We found that the DGD is in direct proportion to its chromatic dispersion.

Abstract:The invention provides an optical true time delay method and system based on dispersion and frequency spectrum processing. The optical true time delay method comprises the following steps: a tunable laser carrier is input; a microwave signal is modulated onto the tunable laser carrier to obtain an optical signal; a quadratic-form phase is added to the optical signal for frequency spectrum reshaping so as to obtain the optical signal after the frequency spectrum reshaping; the optical signal after the frequency spectrum reshaping is subjected to the dispersion processing through a dispersion element; the optical signal output by the dispersion element is subjected to photoelectric detection to obtain a microwave signal, wherein wide-range time delay is realized through adjustment of the frequency of the laser carrier, and the time delay range is within 0-1,717ps; fine adjustment of time delay is realized through control over the quadratic-form phase, and the stepping rate of the time delay is 0.67ps. According to the optical true time delay method, the frequency spectrum reshaping is realized in the mode that the quadratic-form phase is added to an optical frequency spectrum, so that fine tuning of the time delay is realized, and the accuracy is improved. Through laser wavelength tuning and the dispersion element, the time delay range of the microwave signal is expanded.

Abstract:A novel method, to the best of our knowledge, of fiber transfer delay (FTD) measurement based on phase quantization and delay synthesis is proposed and demonstrated. By detecting the differential phase shifts of a set of frequency-multiplied RF signals transmission through the fiber link with and without the FTD under the test, the ${2}\pi $2π phase ambiguity problem can be solved. To avoid the phase quantization error near the digital quantization boundary, a self-check and error-correction method is proposed so as to greatly improve the reliability of measurement. In the experiment, the measurement repeatability around 0.018 ps within a period of 80 s is achieved for a back-to-back fiber link, and a test resolution of 0.03 ps is proved with a motorized tunable delay line. The system is available for measurement of a large FTD range up to 100 µs with no dead zone.

Abstract:A novel and simple technique for the measurement of time delay in the optical fiber by a free-running laser is proposed and demonstrated. The fiber to be measured was spliced to an erbium-doped fiber so as to form a ring-cavity laser. The mode beating frequency of the laser was measured to determine the round-trip time delay. This precise and efficient technique has an accuracy of 10(-8) for a fiber length of 100 km and of 10(-6) for a several-meters-long one. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.
