Abstract:The satellite-to-ground laser communication link plays a crucial role in addressing the technical bottleneck of high-speed information transmission between satellite and ground networks. However, the impact of atmospheric channel conditions poses challenges to the link performance. To overcome these challenges, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics and influencing factors of the satellite-to-ground laser communication link. It summarizes methods for optimizing the transmission performance of the link and proposes approaches for optimizing, monitoring, and predicting the link performance through factors such as the optimization of ground station quantity and location, link availability, link transmission quality, and adaptive coding and modulation. These methods enable the optimization of the transmission performance of the satellite-to-ground laser communication link, thus significantly contributing to the realization of high-speed and reliable laser communication between satellite and ground networks.

Abstract:With the demand for high speed, high capacity and high security inter-satellite communication, the importance of inter-satellite laser communication technology continues to increase. Low earth orbit satellites, middle earth orbit satellites, Geo synchronous orbit satellites and inclined Geo synchronous orbit satellites are the core components of space-based information networks. Based on this scenario, the Doppler shift and free-space loss of the laser communication channel are analyzed in details, and their effects on communication performance are discussed. Typical satellites are selected to simulate the Doppler shift and free-space loss. The analysis of these characteristics of the channel can provide theoretical support for inter-satellite laser communication.

Abstract:This paper proposes a refined visibility modeling method to analyze inter-satellite visibility, considering the highly directional communication characteristics of the Laser Communication Terminals (LCTs) loaded on remote sensing satellites. The proposed method takes the visibility constraints between LCTs into account, improving upon existing models. Based on this new model, a new link allocation algorithm is introduced, with the goal of reducing the link handover rate when topology changes occur. The algorithm uses the previous state’s link establishment topology as a constraint and aims to minimize the average propagation delay from overseas to domestic satellites while maximizing the number of links established between the two. Simulation results show that using this algorithm reduces the average link handover rate by 17.3%, without compromising optimal communication performance in terms of average propagation delay and established link quantity from overseas to domestic satellites.

Abstract:The sixth-generation (6G) network is expected to achieve global coverage based on the space-air-ground integrated network, and the latest satellite network will play an important role in it. The introduction of inter-satellite links (ISLs) can significantly improve the throughput of the satellite network, and recently gets lots of attention from both academia and industry. In this paper, we illustrate the advantages of using the laser for ISLs due to its longer communication distance, higher data speed, and stronger security. Specifically, space-borne laser terminals with the acquisition, pointing and tracking mechanism which realize long-distance communication are illustrated, advanced modulation and multiplexing modes that make high communication rates possible are introduced, and the security of ISLs ensured by the characteristics of both laser and the optical channel is also analyzed. Moreover, some open issues such as advanced optical beam steering, routing and scheduling algorithm, and integrated sensing and communication are discussed to direct future research.

Abstract:Free-space laser communication is attractive technology regardless of in intersatellites applications or in atmosphere application. However, free space laser transmission environment is very terrible, bit error rate will increase because of various interferences. In the paper, the characteristic of free-space laser transmitting is analyzed, and channel models used in the free-space laser communications system are retrospected and summarized. It leads to the suggestion that forward error correction codes should be applied to free space optical communication systems to improve the transmission reliability, and some useful conclusions are drawn.

Abstract:Optical wireless communication using a laser is a strong candidate for the next generation satellite communications due to its large bandwidth. However, the channel environment of satellite communications is very tough, suffering from fading by atmospheric turbulence. Therefore, a powerful channel coding such as low-density parity check (LDPC) code is required for error correction. In this paper, the performance of a LDPC code is evaluated in this harsh channel environment. At the same time, in order to improve the system performance further, an interleaving method in combination with a LDPC code is used to overcome the burst error problem, which frequently occurs in optical satellite communication systems (OSC). Simulation results show that 970 consecutive burst error bits can be recovered by using a large size LDPC code and the proposed type of interleaving.

Abstract:A free space duplex communication system with a single laser and a modulated retro-reflector is presented. A method to minimize the echo wave bit error rate (BER) of this system is proposed by setting the optimum threshold automatically based on the measured mean power and irradiance variances with log-normal distribution and the Bayes minimum classification error criterion. Experiments were taken at a distance of 1.55 km in a weak turbulence and the measured BER was 0.0213. The BER performance of this system is studied and the result shows the experimental BER is in good accordance with the theoretical value.

Abstract:The performance of near-Earth, lunar and interplanetary laser optical communications is investigated by using simulation models which were successfully verified in previous projects. The simulation models consider typical mission design parameters like transmit power and operation wavelength for the optical laser transmitters, different apertures of the optical telescope, varying distances between the Earth ground station and the spacecraft terminals, Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (APD) or superconducting nanowire single photon detection (SNSPD) receivers, atmospheric disturbances like scintillation and absorption, background noises for the uplink and downlink and appropriate pulse position modulation (PPM) orders. Typical design parameters are those of published ESA (European Space Agency) and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) missions. The investigations of laser optical communications for various system parameters and different distances between the Earth ground station and the spacecraft could also help to achieve an overview of free space and deep space optical communications for different orbit constellations for future missions with laser optical communication links.

Abstract:Free Space Optics (FSO) communication provides attractive bandwidth enhancement with unlicensed bands worldwide spectrum. However, the link capacity and availability are the major concern in the different atmospheric conditions. The reliability of the link is highly dependent on weather conditions that attenuate the signal strength. Hence, this study focuses to mitigate the weather and geographic effects using iterative optimization on FSO communication. The optimization maximizes the visibility distance while guaranteeing the reliability by minimizing the Bit Error Rate (BER). The wireless optical communication system is designed for the data rate of 10 Gbps. The performance of the proposed wireless optical communication is compared against the literature in terms of visibility distance, quality factor, BER, and Eye diagram at different atmospheric conditions. The simulation results have shown that the proposed work has achieved better performance.

Abstract:With the development of satellite laser communication technology, data-relay satellite system using optical links will become the backbone of space-based information system in the future. At first, a network architecture of 2 territorial stars +2 overseas stars was designed, then the optical satellite network performance indexes were defined based on the analysis method of SPC exchange(stored program control exchange), and lastly the performance of data-relay satellite system using optical links was simulated. The simulation results show that data-relay satellite system using 12 optical links can support 50 user satellites, when each user satellite communication traffic is 0.2 Erl, access loss probability is greater than 0.2, and link utilization is greater than 0.6.

Abstract:In the upcoming low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, free space optics (FSO) inter-satellite links between two nodes will be incorporated, presenting multiple advantages. These advantages include the use of smaller antenna sizes that reduce the weight and volume of the smaller form factor, saving satellite launching and deployment resources, lowering power consumption, and facilitating higher data rates. Additionally, FSO links offer intrinsic security due to their high directivity and narrow beam width, resulting in no interference. Although FSO provides benefits, its channel capacity requires improvement in comparison to radio-frequency link (RF-Link). The focus of this paper is on presenting an optical design for multi-channel free space optical communication employed in inter-satellite links.

Abstract:An in-flight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) free-space optical (FSO) communication channel model is proposed by considering the beam deviation of the UAV under different motion states and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulences. The influence of the different motion states and turbulences on the communication quality is evaluated through phase screen and Monte Carlo methods. When the average bit error rate (BER) is 10−5, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be increased from 13 dB to 20 dB when the tilt angle of the UAV increases from 0 to 5 mrad. An SNR of up to 20 dB is required when the variance of the wind σα2 is 2 mrad. The performance of the in-flight UAV FSO link can be effectively improved through spatial diversity receiving technology. The BER of lower than 10−5 can be obtained just with an SNR of 13 dB if the spatial diversity array with four receivers is used.

Abstract:Satellite optical communication networks have become a promising core network structure, surpassing 5G and 6G, and are expected to realize seamless connections between terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. Constructing an optical satellite network that can achieve various link schemes and enable bidirectional communication with multiple optical satellites at a low cost (including low power consumption, low weight, and low space occupation for each satellite) poses a technical challenge. In this paper, we propose and establish a multi-format/rate-tunable integrated laser communications hardware platform that can switch between different links by controlling the modulation format and rate. The platform supports OOK, QPSK, and BPSK modulation with rates ranging from 0.625 to 10 Gbps. Experimental demonstration of bidirectional communication is conducted over a free-space optical link. At a distance of 510 meters, sensitivity tests are conducted for signals with various modulation formats and rates. The receiving sensitivity at the 3.8e-3 FEC threshold is −46 dBm for 10 Gbps PDM-QPSK signal, and is −58 dBm for 625 Mbps BPSK signal. Results show excellent signal sensitivity across different formats and rates. Additionally, the platform is capable of performing ranging while communicating with a minimal ranging error of 2.9% of the width of a code word.

Abstract:Recently, the low earth orbit (LEO) mega-constellation faces serious time-varying interferences due to spectrum sharing, dense deployment, and high mobility. Therefore, it is important to study the interference avoidance techniques for the dense LEO satellite system. In this paper, the interference situational aware beam pointing optimization technique is proposed. Firstly, the angle of departure (AoD) and angle of arrival (AoA) of the interfering links are obtained to represent the time-varying interference. Then, the interference avoidance problem for dense LEO satellite systems is modeled as a non-convex optimization problem, and a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based method is proposed to obtain the optimal beam pointing of the user terminal (UT). Simulations show that the relative error of the mean signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) obtained by the proposed method is 0.51%, so the co-channel interference can be effectively mitigated for the dense LEO satellite communication system.

Abstract:Technology advancement delves into the potential adoption of optical laser links over traditional Radio Frequency (RF) waves in space communication systems. Optical link in space offers enhanced speed and efficiency, accompanied by advantages in lower mass and power. Factoring in launch costs and potential data rate advancements, optical system will highly outperform conventional RF system. This study employs link budget calculations and System Tool Kit (STK) simulations to assess the dependability of space laser communication. Link performance for both with and without turbulence are evaluated through parameters like Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), channel capacity, and bit-error-rate (BER). Elevation angles and ground station altitudes increase are shown to improve received power for downlink and uplink, while atmospheric factors such as rain and dense clouds are reducing its value. Turbulence is specifically proven to significantly reduce link performance as it changed BER result from 1.00x10-30to 7.885x10-12 in STK laser simulation. Mitigation potentials to cope with those limitations are then identified including controlling laser output, hybrid switching between optical and RF systems, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation relay, and strategic ground station selection and diversity.

Abstract:It is predicted that Deep Space Optical Networks will be vital for increasing base-band data rates for deep space missions. This paper investigates requirements and design concepts related to Atmospheric Modelling, Acquisition Tracking and Pointing (ATP), Deep Space Optical Ground Terminal, Transmission Link Budget and Transmission Model for a Novel Laser Based Free Space Optical Communication (LBFSOC) Scheme within the framework of ISRO’s Satellite’s Capabilities. In this paper a hypothetical Link Budget is proposed and authenticated by Link margin calculations considering downlink data rate at 622Mbps. Based on the proposed Link Budget, this paper illustrates the effect of transmitter aperture size, Data- Symbol Rate and transmission distance on the down-link bit error rate. The simulations indicate availability of BER dose to 1E- 5 achieved at average transmission power of 1.4W, transmitter aperture diameter of 0.15m and receiver aperture diameter of 0.40m.
Optimal design of small aperture optical terminals for free-space links

Abstract:We present the generalised design of low-complexity, small aperture optical terminals intended for kilometre-scale, terrestrial, free-space laser links between fixed and dynamic targets. The design features single-mode fibre coupling of the free-space beam, assisted by a fast-steering, tip/tilt mirror that enables first-order turbulence suppression and fine target tracking. The total power throughput over the free-space link and the scintillation index in fibre are optimised. The optimal tip/tilt correction bandwidth and range, aperture size, and focal length for a given link are derived using analytical atmospheric turbulence modelling and numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, global interference scenarios are constructed for both uplink and downlink, focusing on co-channel interference between low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation systems, and interference calculations are performed for co-located ground stations. The mathematical correlation between simulation time parameters and the spatial and beam characteristics of the constellation system is investigated from two perspectives: time step and duration design. The mathematical model for determining the time parameters is established based on the relative positions of satellites and ground stations, orbital characteristics, and antenna beam configurations. We analyze the characteristic curves of time step and duration variations, as well as compare different antenna beam widths for uplink and downlink. The magnitude of simulation duration increments with different beam widths is investigated to enhance the efficiency of interference evaluation and analysis, and the curve of interference-to-noise ratio is analyzed. Compared with the actual data registered by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), our method is able to capture the instantaneous worst-case interference in the system under typical conditions. In addition, it gives recommendations regarding the range of interference deviation percentages that can be obtained by choosing different simulation time parameters, thus demonstrating the accuracy and validity.

Abstract:Free-space optical satellite networks (FSOSNs) will employ free-space optical links between satellites and between satellites and ground stations, and the link budget for optical inter-satellite links and optical uplink/downlink is analyzed in this paper. The satellites in these FSOSNs will have limited energy and thereby limited power, and we investigate the effect of link distance and link margin on optical inter-satellite link transmission power, and the effect of slant distance, elevation angle, and link margin on optical uplink/downlink transmission power. We model these optical links and compute the results for various parameters. We observe that the transmission power increases when the link distance increases for inter-satellite and uplink/downlink communications, while the transmission power decreases when the elevation angle increases for uplink/downlink transmission. We also observe an inverse relationship between link margin and link distance. Furthermore, we highlight some practical insights and design guidelines gained from this analysis.
