Abstract:This study presents the development and evaluation of an innovative intelligent garment system, incorporating 3D knitted silver biopotential electrodes, designed for long-term sports monitoring. By integrating advanced textile engineering with wearable monitoring technologies, we introduce a novel approach to real-time physiological signal acquisition, focusing on enhancing athletic performance analysis and fatigue detection. Utilizing low-resistance silver fibers, our electrodes demonstrate significantly reduced skin-to-electrode impedance, facilitating improved signal quality and reliability, especially during physical activities. The garment system, embedded with these electrodes, offers a non-invasive, comfortable solution for continuous ECG and EMG monitoring, addressing the limitations of traditional Ag/AgCl electrodes, such as skin irritation and signal degradation over time. Through various experimentation, including impedance measurements and biosignal acquisition during cycling activities, we validate the system's effectiveness in capturing high-quality physiological data. Our findings illustrate the electrodes' superior performance in both dry and wet conditions. This study not only advances the field of intelligent garments and biopotential monitoring, but also provides valuable insights for the application of intelligent sports wearables in the future.

Abstract:Fashion and apparel industry has been witnessing a lot of transitions in past few decades with clothing not merely regarded as an entity for protection and self-adornment but the whole concept has been reformed with the inception of smart wearable technologies becoming an integral part of today’s fashion parade. Sportswear is one such highly innovative and functional class of clothing which involves a lot of fiber, yarn and fabric engineering to match the needs of a sportsperson. The basic requirement of sportswear is comfort to the wearer along with easy mobility. Comfort can be engineered into sports textile by the selection of such fiber, yarn and fabric variables that contribute to effective thermal, moisture vapor and liquid moisture transmission through clothing. Furthermore, there has been a quest for enhancing the functionality and performance of sportsperson and monitoring their physiological parameters via specifically engineered and designed sportswear. The present study has been undertaken to integrate the concept of smart wearable technology into sportswear intended for sportsperson indulging in low to dynamic physical activity. Accordingly, a sportswear assembly comprising solicit-sports panel integrated t-shirt, shorts, wristband and baseball cap have been designed and developed to explore the moisture management properties desirous of sportswear and energy harvesting principle of solar panel (via its integration into sportswear). The moisture transmission properties of different knit structures have been analyzed and based on objective evaluation; the most suitable structure has been selected for the design and development of sportswear. The designed sportswear has been incorporated with energy harvesting device and the smart sportswear so developed is subjectively tested and evaluated in real time situations.
A Robust Core‐Shell Nanofabric with Personal Protection, Health Monitoring and Physical Comfort for Smart Sportswear

Abstract:This work proposed a strategy to seamlessly integrate the essential functions of multiple sensory, heat regulation, and impact protection into a thin, soft, lightweight, non‐woven textile for smart sportswear via facile coaxial electrospinning technology. Smart textiles with a high level of personal protection, health monitoring, physical comfort, and wearing durability are highly demanded in clothing for harsh application scenarios, such as modern sportswear. However, seamlessly integrating such a smart clothing system has been a long‐sought but challenging goal. Herein, based on coaxial electrospinning techniques, a smart non‐woven textile (Smart‐NT) integrated with high impact resistance is developed, multisensory functions, and radiative cooling effects. This Smart‐NT is comprised of core‐shell nanofibers with an ionic conductive polymer sheath and an impact‐stiffening polymer core. The soft smart textile, with a thickness of only 800 μm, can attenuate over 60% of impact force, sense pressure stimulus with sensitivity up to 201.5 kPa−1, achieve temperature sensing resolution of 0.1 °C, and reduce skin temperature by ≈17 °C under a solar intensity of 1 kW m−2. In addition, the stretchable Smart‐NT is highly durable and robust, retaining its multifunction features over 10 000 bending and multiple washing cycles. Finally, application scenarios are demonstrated for real‐time health monitoring, body protection, and physical comfort of smart sportswear based on Smart‐NT for outdoor sports. The strategy opens a new avenue for seamless integration of smart clothing systems.

These days, seamless and widespread integration of sensors into textiles as well as the creation of conductive yarn are made possible by the fast-moving convergence of textiles and electronics. Potential for processing biometric data such as heart rate, temperature, breathing, stress, movement, acceleration, or even fingerprints using smart fabrics that can interact with smartphones. hormone levels, suggests the dawn of a new shopping era. This article discusses the primary need for creating smart, Internet of Things-enabled clothing and illustrates the potential long-term effects of smart clothing on business models. Abstract:With the improvement of the energy density and sensing accuracy of wearable devices, there is increasing interest in applying wearable electronics in daily life. However, traditional rigid plate-structured wearable devices cannot meet the human body's wearing habits and make users may feel uncomfortable after wearing them for a long time. Fabric-type wearable electronics can be conformably coated on human skin without discomfort from mismatches in mechanical properties between the human body and electronics. Although state-of-the-art textile-based wearable devices have shown unique advantages in the field of e-textiles, real-world scenarios often involve stretching, bending, and wetting. Further efforts should be made to achieve "comfortable wearing" due to the great challenge of achieving both promising electrical properties and comfort in a single device. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the advances in smart fabric-based wearable electronics toward comfortable wearing, emphasizing their stretchability, hydrophobicity, air permeability, stability, and color-change abilities. Through addressing the challenges that persist in fabric-type wearable electronics, we are optimistic that these will be soon ubiquitous in our daily lives, offering exceptionally comfortable wearing experiences for health monitoring, sports performance tracking, and even fashion, paving the way for a more comfortable and technologically advanced future.

Abstract:Wearable electronics with conductive yet stretchable bio-interfaces, multimodal health regulating capabilities, and strong weather resistance are especially expected by athletes and outdoor workers, yet conventional rigid, impermeable, and monofunctional wearables can hardly meet these requirements simultaneously. Here, a hierarchical and ultrastretchable all-in-one health-regulating electronic textile (AIO E-textile) with robust superhydrophobic and antibacterial surfaces is developed through electrospin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly and liquid metal (LM) printing. Skin-like and bio-compatible styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) nonwoven textile is employed as a breathable matrix for the layered E-textile, in which an electrophysiological recording circuit, a strain-sensing circuit, and a Joule heating circuit are successively patterned using EGaIn. To ensure human skin health and weather resistance of the device, antibacterial and waterproof surfaces are respectively installed on both sides of the electronic textile via anchoring functionalized nanoparticles. Thus, this ultrastretchable (1141 %) AIO E-textile shows favorable moisture permeability (1300 g m −2 day), exceptional water repellency, remarkable antibacterial efficacy (>99.99 %) against E-coli , and low-watt Joule heating ability, which even exhibits accurate under-water motion detection capability, and high-definition acquiring of bioelectrical signals (electrocardiogram (ECG) and surface electromyography (sEMG)) when used as flexible epidermal bioelectrode. This work opens up a new avenue for daily applicable and multifunctional on-skin electronics.

Abstract:Smart clothing is widely used for social safety, health monitoring, and sports monitoring. Current research focuses on the use of various materials or sensors to implement smart clothes with different functions, which implies that the functionality of smart clothing depends on the number of sensors used. For existing smart clothing systems, the greatest attention has been given to information processing algorithms and assembly of sensors, and the interaction between users and systems is ignored. To address this gap, this article considers a multifunctional smart clothing system constructed with several sensors. The smart clothing system proposed in this article mainly consists of a hardware module and a software module. Four types of sensors are incorporated into the hardware module to monitor the heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, locating information, and activity states; the software module includes the 3-D model based on the user and the feedback system based on digital twin (DT) technology. The DT technology can map the fundamental states of users in terms of the monitoring indices from the hardware module, and give correspondent advice to users. This novel smart clothing system overcomes the lack of an interaction function in existing methods and introduces DT technology into smart wearable devices for the first time.

This paper introduces the construction of smart clothing system, discusses its usage scenario and the data transmission mode with the terminal, cloud platform, and builds an efficient healthcare system. This paper also discusses the use of smart clothing for measurement of human body signs such as blood oxygen, body temperature, heartbeat, and ensures users being in good health by real-time monitoring. Finally, this paper focuses on the collection of ECG signals and the experiment of analyzing user’s feelings.

Abstract:Recent advances in wearable electronics have enabled the development of sweat sensors providing valuable information for healthcare monitoring. However, the limitations of sweat sensors are excessive dependence on external detection systems, the impossible to real-time visual signal transmission, and inadequate perspiration management. Herein, a single- and double-layer interwoven fabric (SDIF) is designed to achieve indicators of color visualization with an output of electrical signal and energy supply. After absorption of electrolyte, the SDIF can be rapidly activated, connected with the concentration, infiltrated volume, and environmental parameters, and the variational color of SDIF can provide visual indicators. The one tissue cycle of SDIF with three-weft intervals maintains a stable output voltage of ≈1.0 V, conducted by twisting, folding, dynamic bending, and reusing. Moreover, serial tissue cycles can be woven into large fabrics by connecting in series and parallel configurations for energy supply. The developed SDIF with an interweaving structural design using industrial-producible weaving technology provides the functionality of sweat adsorption and transportation, monitoring by recognition of color, and electrical signals to improve perspiration management.

Abstract:Purpose Breast cancer has become the largest cancer in the world today. Health problems for women with breast cancer need to be addressed urgently. This study aims to select the best method for preparing temperature-sensitive sports underwear, and to verify the feasibility of using K-type thermocouple threads in underwear fabrics. Design/methodology/approach In the experiments, two samples were designed for temperature-sensitive performance tests and the effects produced by different outer layer structures were investigated. In the second step, K-type thermocouple wires were integrated into sports underwear. The comfort and feasibility of the temperature-sensitive underwear were investigated. Findings It was finally verified to obtain the best comfort and temperature-sensing performance of K-type thermocouple filaments integrated into sports underwear with plain stitching. Originality/value The underwear has a certain prospect for the application of smart apparel based on breast cancer health monitoring, which is of some significance for monitoring smart apparel.

Abstract:Fabrics are soft against the skin, flexible, easily accessible and able to wick away perspiration, to some extent for local private thermal management. In this review, we classify smart fabrics as passive thermal management fabrics and active thermal management fabrics based on the availability of outside energy consumption in the manipulation of heat generation and dissipation from the human body. The mechanism and research status of various thermal management fabrics are introduced in detail, and the article also analyses the advantages and disadvantages of various smart thermal management fabrics, achieving a better and more comprehensive comprehension of the current state of research on smart thermal management fabrics, which is quite an important reference guide for our future research. In addition, with the progress of science and technology, the social demand for fabrics has shifted from keeping warm to improving health and quality of life. E-textiles have potential value in areas such as remote health monitoring and life signal detection. New e-textiles are designed to mimic the skin, sense biological data and transmit information. At the same time, the ultra-moisturizing properties of the fabric's thermal management allow for applications beyond just the human body to energy. E-textiles hold great promise for energy harvesting and storage. The article also introduces the application of smart fabrics in life forms and energy harvesting. By combining electronic technology with textiles, e-textiles can be manufactured to promote human well-being and quality of life. Although smart textiles are equipped with more intelligent features, wearing comfort must be the first thing to be ensured in the multi-directional application of textiles. Eventually, we discuss the dares and prospects of smart thermal management fabric research.
A Step Forward for Smart Clothes: Printed Fabric-Based Hybrid Electronics for Wearable Health Monitoring

Abstract:Smart clothes equipped with flexible sensing systems provide a comfortable means to track health status in real time. Although these sensors are flexible and small, the core signal-processing units still rely on a conventional printed circuit board (PCB), making current health-monitoring devices bulky and inconvenient to wear. In this study, a printed fabric-based hybrid circuit was designed and prepared—with a series of characteristics, such as surface/sectional morphology, electrical properties, and stability—to study its reliability. Furthermore, to verify the function of the fabric-based circuit, simulations and measurements of the circuit, as well as the collection and processing of a normal adult's electrophysiological signals, were conducted. Under 10,000 stretching and bending cycles with a certain elongation and bending angle, the resistance remained 0.27 Ω/cm and 0.64 Ω/cm, respectively, demonstrating excellent conductivity and reliability. Additionally, the results of the simulation and experiment showed that the circuit can successfully amplify weak electrocardiogram (ECG) signals with a magnification of 1600 times with environmental filtering and 50 Hz of industrial frequency interference. This technology can monitor human electrophysiological signals, such as ECGs, electromyograms (EMGs), and joint motion, providing valuable practical guidance for the unobtrusive monitoring of smart clothes.

Abstract:Intelligent monitoring human physiological information in real time raises the demand for skin‐integrated electronics, as which is a flexible format and can be mounted onto the curved human skin for noninvasive healthcare monitoring. The biofluid such as sweat from skin contains abundant biomarkers reflecting body health conditions. Here, we describe a skin‐integrated sweat monitor with six biosensors embedded for the detection of NH4+, Na+, glucose, pH, skin impedance, and surface temperature, which could decode the information in the fresh sweat generated during exercising. Furthermore, the system also includes an innovative safety warning mechanism, which is based on a miniaturized actuator to provide mechanical stimuli, and coupled with six changeable colors light emitting diodes (LEDs) corresponding to the six biosensors for providing simultaneous safety alarming to users. The self‐developed microfluidics system with a hydrophilic surface allows to enhance the sweat collection rate. Meanwhile, microfluidic filters can reduce the interruption of skin debris during bio‐signal monitoring. These state‐of‐art biosensors can real‐time monitor health related signals with excellent linearity and specificity. Privee: A Wearable for Real-Time Bladder Monitoring System

Abstract:Urinary incontinence (UI) is a prevalent condition affecting millions of individuals worldwide, leading to various physical, social, and psychological challenges that diminish their quality of life. Current management approaches primarily focus on containment rather than proactive monitoring and warning systems. This paper presents the development and evaluation of a novel wearable technology called Privee, designed as an unobtrusive undergarment to monitor bladder fullness in real-time. Privee utilizes e-textile-based bioimpedance spectroscopy technology, which noninvasively assesses bladder fullness by analyzing the electrical properties of body tissues and fluids. The undergarment incorporates eight embroidered electrodes and textile transmission lines seamlessly integrated into the fabric. By continuously monitoring the bioimpedance signals from the bladder, Privee provides real-time information about the bladder’s fullness level. This data is processed using a specialized algorithm to estimate the need for urination. The noninvasive nature of Privee eliminates the discomfort and risks associated with invasive monitoring methods, offering a user-friendly and convenient solution for individuals with UI, overactive bladder, or post-operative care needs. This innovative technology has the potential to improve patients’ quality of life and optimize healthcare costs associated with UI management.

Abstract:The current physical health care system has gradually evolved into a form of virtual hospitals communicating with sensors, which can not only save time but can also diagnose a patient's physical condition in real time. Textile-based wearable sensors have recently been identified as detection platforms with high potential. They are developed for the real-time noninvasive detection of human physiological information to comprehensively analyze the health status of the human body. Sweat comprises various chemical compositions, which can be used as biomarkers to reflect the relevant information of the human physiology, thus providing references for health conditions. Combined together, textile-based sweat sensors are more flexible and comfortable than other conventional sensors, making them easily integrated into the wearable field. In this short review, the research progress of textile-based flexible sweat sensors was reviewed. Three mechanisms commonly used for textile-based sweat sensors were firstly contrasted with an introduction to their materials and preparation processes. The components of textile-based sweat sensors, which mainly consist of a sweat transportation channel and collector, a signal-selection unit, sensing elements and sensor integration and communication technologies, were reviewed. The applications of textile-based sweat sensors with different mechanisms were also presented. Finally, the existing problems and challenges of sweat sensors were summarized, which may contribute to promote their further development.

Abstract:Wearable sweat sensing technologies have received wide attention for personalized health monitoring with continuous and molecular-level insight in a noninvasive manner. However, it remains significantly challenging to simultaneously capture a sufficient volume of sweat and achieve stable contact between electrodes and sweat, especially in a relatively mild sweating condition. Herein, a wearable electrochemical fabric sensor is developed by embroidering diversified sensing yarns with a multi-ply cotton sheath and carbon nanotube-based sensing fiber core into a super-hydrophobic fabric substrate. The device allows for sweat enrichment among the core-sheath sensing yarn and reduce ineffective diffusion, thus remarkably increasing the sweat capture efficiency. As a result, only 0.5 mu L of sweat is needed to achieve stable circuit connectivity, 1/20 of the lowest volume reported to date. The device also maintains a highly durable sensing performance, obtained even during dynamic deformation processes such as bending, twisting, and shaking. It can be further designed into an integrated sports shirt system, which can perform real-time monitoring of multiple chemical information (e.g., glucose, Na+, K+, and pH) of sweat for users at the states of both intense exercise conditions such as badminton and relatively mild conditions like walking and eating.

Abstract:Textile sensors are a branch of revolutionary electronics that carry tantalizing prospects toward myriad applications. However, their capability of differentiating multiple stimuli still remains a challenge. Here, we develop a multimodal smart textile that can simultaneously measure temperature and pulse/touch in real time, with high performance and no signal interference. The smart textile outputs two independent variables, with the whole textile as a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to detect touch/pulse and its core thermoresistive micro/nano porous fiber strand (also is the TENG’s working electrode) to detect temperature. The stretchable core thermoresistive micro/nano porous fiber of the smart textile achieves record-high thermal sensitivity (β = 4994.55 K, α=−5.58%/K at 26 °C) and the fastest response/recovery time (97/239 ms) among previously reported fiber/textile-based temperature sensors, to our best knowledge. This fiber based on the growth of Fe2(MoO4)3 on graphene has much higher temperature sensing performance (∼3.2 times higher thermal sensitivity) than that based on directly blending Fe2(MoO4)3 and graphene. Moreover, the fiber has high thermal stability and its temperature sensing performance is insensitive to strain (stretching, bending and pressing). The smart textile is demonstrated for artificial sensation and health monitoring to simultaneously provide accurate profiles of both temperature and touch/pulse. This work provides new insights for wearable sensors.

Abstract:Textile-based sensors offer an unobtrusive method of continually monitoring physiological parameters during daily activities. Chemical analysis of body fluids, noninvasively, is a novel and exciting area of personalized wearable healthcare systems. BIOTEX was an EU-funded project that aimed to develop textile sensors to measure physiological parameters and the chemical composition of body fluids, with a particular interest in sweat. A wearable sensing system has been developed that integrates a textile-based fluid handling system for sample collection and transport with a number of sensors including sodium, conductivity, and pH sensors. Sensors for sweat rate, ECG, respiration, and blood oxygenation were also developed. For the first time, it has been possible to monitor a number of physiological parameters together with sweat composition in real time. This has been carried out via a network of wearable sensors distributed around the body of a subject user. This has huge implications for the field of sports and human performance and opens a whole new field of research in the clinical setting.
