Abstract:With the increasing applications of real-time multimedia on Internet, an ECN-based TCP-friendly Congestion Control (ETCC) scheme was proposed, in which both end host and router were involved. RED was adopted in the router, and early congestion state was notified to the sender using ECN. Sending rate could be adjusted according to the rate scheme in the end host. The simulation showed that ETCC could adjust sending rate smoothly, decrease delay and packet loss ratio while maintaining good TCP-friendliness.
CW-HSTCP: Fair TCP in High-Speed Networks

Abstract:The congestion control mechanisms of the current standard TCP constrain the congestion windows that can be achieved by TCP in high-speed networks, which leads to low link utilization. HSTCP is one solution to solve this problem by modifying the congestion control mechanism to have the characteristics of TCP friendliness in high loss rate environment and high scalability in low loss rate environment. However, experiments revealed that HSTCP has severe RTT unfairness. After analyzing the RTT unfairness in HSTCP with a model, we proposed CW-HSTCP, which added a fair factor to decrease the difference of congestion window caused by different RTT. Fair factor of long RTT flows can cause a sharp window increment that is easy to cause a bursty traffic, so a method called block-pacing was adopted. Simulation results showed that our new proposal could alleviate the RTT unfairness while keeping advantages of HSTCP.
A TCP-Friendly UDP Congestion Control Scheme Based on Explicit Rate

Abstract:A new UDP congestion control scheme based on explicit rate is proposed. According to this scheme, the end-systems, supported by the network routers, get the fair bandwidth of the bottleneck link in the connection. The sender regulates their send-rate to its alloted fair bandwidth smoothly. The proposed UDP congestion control scheme is TCP-friendly and easy to be implemented. Result of simulations shows the new UDP congestion control scheme has better performance than the other UDP congestion control schemes such as TCP-Friendly Rate Control (TFRC) protocol, especial in the throughput and TCP-friendliness. And the result also reveals the scheme is robust to the algorithms of queue management, such as Droptail and RED.
End-to-end Congestion Control for TCP-friendly Flows with Variable Data Rates

Abstract:This paper presents recent new findings on the network resource utilization bias phenomenon in the context of TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) protocol based data flows. It has been found that data flows with lower data rate could yield more than twice of the link utilization than flows with higher data rates under the circumstance that multiple dta flows compete network resource in a shared bottleneck link, e.g. the access link bandwidth is greater than the bottleneck bandwidth. The study is carried out through extensive numerical experiments and a set of key results are presented. In this paper, we highlight and analysis the underlying reasons of the obtained results, and proposed a solution and assessed its performance through simulations. The aspects which could be further improved in the proposed solution have also been discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the inherent characteristic of the contention relation between flows in ad hoc networks, we introduce the notion of the link’s interference set, extend the utility maximization problem representing congestion control in wireline networks to ad hoc networks, apply the penalty function approach and the subgradient method to solve this problem, and propose the congestion control algorithm Penalty function-based Optical Congestion Control (POCC) which is implemented in NS2 simulator. Specifically, each link transmits periodically the information on its congestion state to its interference set; the session at each source adjusts the transmission rate based on the optimal tradeoff between the utility value and the congestion level which the interference set of the links that this session goes though suffers from. MATLAB-based simulation results showed that POCC can approach the globally optimal solution. The NS2-based simulation results showed that POCC outperforms default TCP and ATCP to achieve efficient and fair resource allocation in ad hoc networks.
OCPS: Offset Compensation Based Packet Scheduling Mechanism for Multipath TCP.

Abstract:As terminals are equipped with multiple interfaces and allowed to access heterogeneous networks, transferring data simultaneously through all the available paths becomes possible and also brings many benefits. Multipath TCP (MPTCP) distributes an application stream over different TCP connections. Since different paths have disparate latencies, out-of-order packets problem occurs at receiver. Large number of these packets exhaust the limited receive buffer and make the receive window stall, which greatly degrade the throughput. Thus, a scheduling mechanism plays an important role to keep in-order delivery. Previous intelligent scheduling mechanisms schedule data independently each time and doesn't utilize the feedback carried in acknowledgements, which lose flexibility. Our Offset Compensation based Packet Scheduling (OCPS) mechanism gets feedback information from SACK options and gains the knowledge of whether last scheduling round still causes out-of-order problem. Then it modifies the scheduling next round accordingly by using an offset. The simulation results illustrate our mechanism enhance throughput and reduce cache occupancy at receiver.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the impact of wireless opportunistic scheduling on TCP throughput. Considering interference of the adjacent layers, we propose a new ACK reservoir method to smooth the TCP behavior combating the spurious timeout caused by scheduling. Based on performance analysis and simulation results, the proposed method is shown to improve the TCP throughput by up to 100% in the presence of opportunistic scheduling. Finally, the proposed method is evaluated in a practical simulation scenario of CDMA/HDR system.

Abstract:The unfairness caused by bandwidth sharing via TCP in data center networks is called TCP Outcast problem. Some researchers show that the throughput of a flow with small Round Trip Time (RTT) is less than that with large RTT which is completely contrary to the classic Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) protocol, and they believe that the Outcast problem is caused by port blackout in data center. However, we find that there are more important reasons for outcast which are an unfair distribution of the flows with different RTT on physical link and the differences in congestion window size when finishing the transmission of current block. TCP Incast is a throughput collapse that occurs when many flows arrive at the switch destined for the same output port. Incast deteriorates the performance of networks by increasing the queuing delay of flows and decreasing the throughput of applications. In this paper, we develop an analytical model for goodput when TCP Outcast occurs. Then we propose a new protocol based on window notification mechanism called TCP congestion window replacement (TCP-CWR), which can improve the goodput of the flows with small RTT to solve the outcast problem. Second, we propose a new transport layer protocol based on acknowledgment (ACK) reply changing rate to solve the Incast problem named TCP with Acknowledgment Changing Rate (TCP-ACR). The TCP-ACR protocol adjusts the current congestion window according to the changing rate of ACK and the theoretical maximum congestion window, and it can alleviate the congestion in data center networks. Last, we conduct simulation experiments to verify our proposed schemes. The results show that our analysis of Outcast is correct and our proposed protocols for Outcast and Incast are effective and practical.
Congestion Control for Small Buffer High Speed Networks

Abstract:There is growing interest in designing high speed routers with small buffers that store only tens of packets. Recent studies suggest that TCP NewReno, with the addition of a pacing mechanism, can interact with such routers without sacrificing link utilization. Unfortunately, as we show in this paper, as workload requirements grow and connection bandwidths increase, the interaction between the congestion control protocol and small buffer routers produce link utilizations that tend to zero. This is a simple consequence of the inverse square root dependence of TCP throughput on loss probability. In this paper we present a new congestion controller that avoids this problem by allowing a TCP connection to achieve arbitrarily large bandwidths without demanding the loss probability go to zero. We show that this controller produces stable behavior and, through simulation, we show its performance to be superior to TCP NewReno in a variety of environments. Lastly, because of its advantages in high bandwidth environments, we compare our controller's performance to some of the recently proposed high performance versions of TCP including HSTCP, STCP, and FAST. Simulations illustrate the superior performance of the proposed controller in a small buffer environment.
Contention Resolution Through Network Global Control In Optical Packet Switching Networks

Abstract:Optical buffering is one of the main obstacles in optical packet switching (OPS) networks. We proposed the network global control strategy to resolve this problem. By introducing the cycled traffic at the edge node and the slot assignment algorithm at the core node, a slotted OPS networks with no contention can be realized. In this network, a good throughput, end to end delay and delay jitter performance can be gotten at high load simultaneously, so it may be a promising candidate for the future optical networks.
Improving the Convergence and Stability of Congestion Control Algorithm

Abstract:The traditional TCP congestion control is inefficient for high speed networks and it is a challenge to design a high speed replacement for TCP. By simulating some existing high speed protocols, we find that these high speed protocols have limitations in convergence and stability. To address these problems, we apply a population ecology model to design a novel congestion control algorithm-Coupling Logistic TCP(CLTCP). It is based on bandwidth pre-assignment that is similar to XCP and MaxNet. The pre-assignment rate factor is computed in the routers based on the information of the router capacity, the aggregate incoming traffic and the queue length. Then the senders adjust the sending rate according to the pre-assignment rate factor which carries by the packet to strengthen the convergence and stability of transport protocol. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that CLTCP provides not only fast convergence and strong stability, but also high utilization and fair bandwidth allocation regardless of round trip time.
PTCP: A Priority-Based Transport Control Protocol for Timeout Mitigation in Commodity Data Center.

Abstract:In data centers, the occurrence of timeout for TCP may hurt its data transmission performance dramatically, causing problems like TCP Incast, TCP Outcast and long query completion time. To mitigate timeouts, the transport protocol should try to maintain a small switch queue to avoid the packet loss and recover lost packets quickly. Recent work suggests using Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN), Round Trip Time (RTT) or the in-network signal to achieve that. However, these solutions either still suffer from many timeouts when the number of concurrent flows becomes larger or require the nontrivial hardware support. The limitations motivate us to design a Priority-based Transport Control Protocol termed PTCP to mitigate timeouts as far as possible for commodity data center. The key idea of PTCP is that it inserts a high priority packet following each window of data packets. The key insight is that since the priorities of data packets and the inserted packet are different, they may arrive at the receiver in different sequences depending on the network congestion. By checking the sequences of the received ACKs of the two kinds of packets, PTCP can infer the network congestion to guide the fine adjustment of its sending window such that the switch buffer occupation is kept small. Additionally, by keeping the high priority packet always in flight, PTCP could determine to retransmit the possible lost data packets quickly. With the two mechanisms, PTCP significantly alleviates timeouts even when the number of concurrent flows becomes large. Furthermore, PTCP only requires the priority queuing function of switch, which is available in existing commodity switch hardware. Thus, it does not require the hardware modification. Extensive performance evaluation is conducted to demonstrate that PTCP has zero timeout and better performance for problems like TCP Incast, TCP Outcast and long query completion time compared with several state-of-the-art protocols.
RTCP - Reduce Delay Variability with an End-to-end Approach

Abstract:Many important applications in modern network systems are sensitive to delay and delay variability. To ensure good performance on both metrics, in this paper, we propose a novel transport protocol called Regulated TCP (RTCP), whose design is inspired by the use of auxiliary variables in optimization theory. RTCP is a light-weight protocol and it uses counters in end devices and end-to-end delay measurements for rate adaptation (via window adjustment). We implement RTCP in both ns-3 and a network testbed under two workload types, i.e., web search and data mining. Our testbed experiments show that compared to existing congestion control schemes such as BBR [1] and PCC [2], RTCP guarantees a better delay performance for urgent flows, while keeping a competitive goodput. Our ns-3 simulation results also demonstrate that RTCP performs well in a wide range of scenarios. In particular, RTCP achieves a 9.78% throughput increase over BBR, and a 64.22% delay reduction of DCTCP [3] in a random sending scenario. It also reduces the 99th packet delay to less than 56% of other end-to-end TCP versions, including LEDBAT [4], TIMELY [5] and Vegas [6], in the large-scale incast scenario.

Abstract:TCP Incast refers to the phenomenon of goodput collapse when multiple synchronized servers send data to the same client in parallel. In this paper, we propose a novel application-level scheduling approach named OSDT (Optimal Staggering Data Transfers) for TCP Incast problem. OSDT limits the number of concurrent TCP flows as well as servers' sending rate to optimal values so that the utilization of link capacity can be maximized without any packet losses. To achieve this, we build an optimization model with the usage of network and application information. Based on this model we can get the optimal values for the parameters in OSDT. Simulation results indicate that OSDT can achieve the highest goodput among all existing application-level scheduling approaches in a wide range of network and application parameters, and its performance is stable. So OSDT can be seen as an effective and scalable solution for TCP Incast problem.
On the Performance of TCP over Throughput-Optimal CSMA

Abstract:An interesting distributed throughput-optimal CSMA MAC protocol, called adaptive CSMA, was proposed recently to schedule any strictly feasible rates inside the capacity region. Of particular interest is the fact that the adaptive CSMA can achieve a system utility arbitrarily close to that is achievable under a central scheduler. However, a specially designed transport-layer rate controller is needed for this result. An outstanding question is whether TCP Reno (one of the most mature versions of TCP) is compatible with adaptive CSMA and can achieve the same result. The answer to this question will determine how close to practical deployment adaptive CSMA is. Our answer is yes and no. First, we observe that running TCP Reno directly over adaptive CSMA results in severe starvation problems. Effectively, its performance is no better than that of TCP Reno over legacy CSMA (IEEE 802.11), and the potentials of adaptive CSMA cannot be realized. We then propose a multi-connection TCP solution with active queue management and prove that it can work with adaptive CSMA to achieve optimal utility. NS-2 simulations demonstrate that our solution can alleviate starvation and achieve fair and efficient rate allocation. We remark that multi-connection TCP can be implemented at either application or transport layer. Application-layer implementation requires no kernel modification, making the solution readily deployable in networks running adaptive CSMA. Our results show that adaptive CSMA can work well with only light-weight TCP modifications, bringing it a step closer to practicality.

Abstract:In order to be TCP-friendly, the original Multipath TCP (MPTCP) congestion control algorithm is always restricted to gain no better throughput than a traditional single-path TCP on the best path. However, it is unable to maximize the throughput over all available paths when they do not go through a shared bottleneck. Also, bottleneck fairness based solutions detect the bottleneck and conduct different congestion control algorithms at different bottleneck sets to increase throughput while remaining fair to single TCP. However, existing solutions generally detect shared bottlenecks through delay correlation and loss correlation between two flows, which often lead to misjudgement in dynamic and complex network scenarios. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose a new Shared Bottleneck based Congestion Control scheme, called SB-CC, which leverages ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) mechanism to detect shared bottlenecks among subflows and estimate the congestion degree of each subflow. Then, with the congestion degree, SB-CC balances the loads among all subflows, and smooths out congestion window fluctuation. Also, in order to prevent throughput degradation due to out-of-order packets, we propose a Shared Bottleneck based Forward Prediction packet Scheduling scheme, called SB-FPS. SB-FPS distributes data according to the window size changes of each subflow, and thus could more accurately schedule data in shared bottleneck scenarios. We implement our proposed scheme in the Linux kernel and simulation platform to evaluate the performance in different scenarios. Measurement results indicate that our scheme can detect the bottleneck more accurately and improve the overall network performance while still keeping bottleneck fairness.

Based on the analysis, the length of overhead synchronization bits is optimized to achieve high framing efficiency, which can enhance bandwidth efficiency.

Abstract:It is a known issue that low-latency communication is hard to achieve when using multiple network interfaces with asymmetric capacity and delay (e.g., LTE and WLAN) simultaneously. A main underlying cause of this issue is that the packets with lower sequence number are stalled on a high-latency path, thus the early arriving packets with higher sequence number become "out-of-order (OFO)" packets. These OFO packets may excessively consume receiver's buffer, causing long reordering delay and unnecessary packet retransmission. In this paper, we present a novel design of packet scheduling for Multipath TCP (MPTCP), called OverLapped Scheduler (OLS), able to tackle the OFO-packet problem more effectively. OLS can guarantee sufficient throughput on demand of upper layer applications, and utilizes the remaining bandwidth to reduce OFO-packets. To do so, OLS schedules packets according to their arrival time and sends a controlled number of redundant packets to avoid the impact of inaccurate arrival-time estimations due to network jitter. We implement OLS in a Linux kernel, and the experiments show that in asymmetric networks with or without jitter, OLS can effectively reduce OFO-packets and transmission latency while maintaining a sufficient throughput, which makes it fully capable to meet the requirements of applications such as live video streaming.

Abstract:Ad-Hoc networks have limitations that make transmission control protocol(TCP) inefficient.This paper describes a mechanism to improve TCP performance in Ad-Hoc networks with the advantages of the congestion avoidance mechanism based on round trip time(RTT) detection and the congestion control mechanism based on packet drop detection.It helps improve smoothness of the traffic flows in wireless network,using adaptive pacing for sending packets.The mechanism is an end-to-end solution in transport layer.It does not need any cross-layer information and can be easily implemented.Tests in NS2 show that this mechanism achieves good throughput as well as fairness among the flows.

Abstract:Many researches have shown that TCP performance in ad hoc networks is extremely poor, because the congestion control mechanism of TCP cannot effectively deal with the problem of packet drops caused by the shared channel contention. In this paper, a cross-layer method was presented,which adaptively adjusted the TCP maximum window size according to the number of RTS (Request To Send) retries of the MAC layer at the TCP sender, to control the number of TCP packets in the network and thus decrease the channel contention. The simulation results show that this method can remarkably improve the throughput and stability of TCP.
