Abstract:The rapid development of technology is viewed as a key determinant of success in a firm. Technology innovation is regarded as a tool for strengthening the competitiveness of a firm or an industry. This paper develops a model of technology innovation. We hypothesize that technological innovation capabilities are a function of a firm's technology competence, top management support, information source and strategic alliances. These relationships are empirically tested using the date of 160 Chinese firms acquired by interviews and surveys. The results indicate some important implications for the managers. First, the technology competence is positively associated with the level of innovation. In addition, managers need to pay attention to the information source, which influence the speed of technology innovation. Secondly, the prior technology and management experience of CEO and the attitude to innovation will influence the development the technology of a firm. Lastly, from the results we find the number of strategic alliances has no significant relationship with technology innovation. It is to say, managers need to consider the best number of technological copartner. Furthermore, we conclude the implications of this research and discuss the limitations of the study and future research.

Abstract:Using firm-level data of companies listed on China's A-share market from 2006 to 2017, this research applies a difference-in-differences (DID) empirical method to test whether the state policy in China used for identifying firms as being "high-tech" enhances their innovative capabilities. This paper presents three main findings. First, multiple robustness tests confirm that the state technology identification policy does improve the total number of patent applications as well as the number of patent invention applications. Second, government subsidy is an important channel through which this policy affects a firm's innovation capabilities. Third, this policy has a more prominent and positive influence on the innovation capabilities of firms located in regions where there exist a higher rate of taxation in addition and relatively more developed products and factor markets. Fourth, we conduct a flexible back-of-the-envelope cost-benefit analysis to demonstrate that the high-tech firm identification policy does improve the overall level of social welfare. The empirical results of this paper have far-reaching implications for China's innovation policies.

We argued based on our empirical research that small, medium size, and large NSOEs will confront red flags of foundation, decision, and bureaucracy, respectively. Abstract:This paper introduces the evolutionary process of technological innovation and technology management in Chinese enterprises since 1949. First, the transition of corporate management and technology management in China is introduced in comparison to Western-style management. Then, based on the historical description and case studies, the typical technology development process, especially the processes of technological acquisition, learning and secondary innovation in Chinese enterprises, is analyzed. The integration between technology acquisition and in-house design and R&D is emphasized. The authors suggest that "assimilation and self-design upon imported technology" (3-I policy) is the suitable and vital technology development avenue for most Chinese firms. To accomplish such a technological avenue, coordination, which exists between product innovation and process innovation, corporate strategy and technology strategy, and technology evolution and organizational change must be organized well and dynamically. As Chinese firms face more severe competition than ever, more attention should be paid to the development of indigenous capabilities for technological innovation. The firms' innovation system (FIS), which emphasizes the infrastructure support for a firms entrepreneurship, R&D system, and organization, as well as high-talent personnel, should be established or improved. Thus, technology strategy and the technological innovation system are currently the two key issues of management of technology (MOT) in China and will continue to be into the coming century.

Abstract:This paper studies how large State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China are approaching the technological innovation frontier and contributes to the literature on technological catching up and leapfrogging by identifying three models or strategies of approaching the innovation frontier. In addition to the well-recognised technology transfer based strategy, pursuing emerging technologies and reinventing mature technology could also be effective, with reinventing mature technology as the most important strategy. The paper also finds that strong internal R&D capability, rather than manufacturing capability as suggested by the extant literature, is the basis of all three models. This also implies that making big organisational transformations such as changing a technology transfer centred R&D function to a proprietary technology development centred R&D function, changing a manufacturing centred culture to an innovation centred culture, and reshaping the innovation network, is an important precondition to approach the innovation frontier.

Abstract:<p>This study identifies the impact of green supply chain management (GSCM) on clean technology innovation (CTI) by enterprises in China as well as compares the effects of forward and backward GSCM and the differences by industry and home country. The effect of CTI on GSCM is tested by 501 samples of mostly multinational enterprises in China from 2014 to 2016. The results indicate that CTI benefits from GSCM, which remains robust to a series of sensitivity test. And different management directions show great differences, where the backward GSCM has a stronger promotion effect on CTI than the forward GSCM. Moreover, light polluting industries and capital-intensive industries have stronger incentives to adopt GSCM than heavy-polluting industries and labour-intensive industries. And domestic companies perform better than foreign companies.</p>

Abstract:The conventional wisdom is that state ownership may hinder patenting through reduced incentives and pronounced agency problems associated with state-owned enterprises (SOEs). Empirical evidence from a variety of contexts, including the U.S., Europe, and China, is consistent with this view, that reductions in state ownership are associated with an increase in patent counts. In this paper, we investigate the innovative efficiency of Chinese SOEs. Innovative efficiency refers to output of patents per dollar spending of R&D expenditure. The data indicate that SOEs, especially SOEs that serve minority shareholders, are substantially more innovatively efficient than non-SOEs. The relative innovative efficiency of SOEs is more pronounced amongst firms with high financial constraints and those away from financial centers. The data are consistent with the view that, in the Chinese context, there are favorable benefits to state ownership through access to talent, connections, and technological resources that enables efficient patent outcomes from R&D expenditure.

Abstract:Global warming can be solved with carbon trading. When carbon emissions become a commodity, it can be a powerful motivator for companies to optimize production capacity and innovate technologically. The goal of this paper is to examine the way in which China's carbon emissions trading policy (CET) influences firm technological innovation in seven pilot regions, using a sample of firms in eight high-carbon industries. We employ difference-in-difference (DID) as well as DID-based propensity score matching (PSM-DID) models to investigate the influence of China's carbon emission policy on firms' technological innovation by using 4745 observations of 749 A-share listed firms in eight high-carbon industries in mainland China from 2007 to 2021. According to the findings, China's CET policy significantly boosts firms' technological innovation, and this beneficial effect persists even after a series of robustness tests that change the policy's implementation year and the technological innovation measure. Further analysis shows that this positive effect is heterogeneous across high-carbon industries and firms with different ownership. In addition, based on the external governance perspective, we find that CET policy performs better in firms in high-carbon industries with a sizable portion of ownership held by institutional investors. This study suggests the effectiveness of CET policy in promoting firms' technological innovation, confirms empirical evidence for Porter's hypothesis, and provides a basis for Chinese firms to achieve their emission reduction targets by improving technological innovation.

Abstract:This paper offers an analysis of the influence of management behavior on the relationship between factors such as market, governance and resources of a firm, and the choice of the type of technological innovation in Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs). The authors develop a structural equation model and 12 hypotheses and test the model and hypotheses using a sample of 274 SOEs in China. This study discovers that the choice of innovation types among Chinese SOEs depends on the turbulence in the environment, and on the organizational resources. The key contributions of the study include: testing existing theories of innovation in the context of Chinese SOEs; studying the factors that affect product innovation and process innovation in that context; and demonstrating that market forces and internal governance simultaneously influence SOE innovation.

Abstract:Technological innovation in the CTL 1 industry is an important direction for China's future development. Taking the China's listed CTL companies as samples, this study makes an empirical test on the relationship between technological innovation capabilities and corporate competitiveness of CTL companies, and explores the regulating effect of enterprise scales on the relationship between technological innovation capabilities and corporate competitiveness, as well as the mediating effect of product differentiation on this relationship. It is found that the investment capacity of CTL enterprises for technological innovation has a significant driving effect on their competitiveness (with the correlation coefficient of 0.017), the output capacity of technological innovation has no remarkable effect on the promotion of the enterprises' competitiveness (with the correlation coefficient of 0.0298), enterprise scales have a positive regulating effect on the relationship between technological innovation input and output capabilities and corporate competitiveness (with the coefficient of the interaction term of 0.3870 and 0.0002 respectively), and product differentiation plays a mediating effect on this relationship (with the coefficient of the interaction term of 0.147 and 0.096 respectively). From the results, it can be said that increasing R&D expenses of enterprises, encourage the cultivation and introduction of high-end R&D talents as well as strengthen technological innovation and enhance product differentiation can help to improve CTL enterprises' competitiveness. The conclusions of this study can provide theoretical bases for CTL enterprises to hike and improve their competitiveness in terms of technological innovation.

Abstract:Using 2008–2017 data on 1036 Chinese A-share listed companies, we investigate the impact of the green credit policy (GCP) on corporate technological innovation (TI). We argue that the promulgation of the 2012 “Green Credit Guidelines” (GCG) can be seen as a quasi-natural experiment. Employing a difference-in-differences (DID) model to more effectively approximate the effect of the GCP, we find that (i) the GCP significantly promoted TI in highly polluting and energy-intensive enterprises (HEEs) in terms of both quantity and quality. (ii) The effect of the GCP on the TI of HEEs was asymmetric, reflecting different effects on firms with different property rights and sizes. (iii) Profitability and ownership concentration (OC) enhanced the role of the GCP in promoting TI. (iv) Agency costs (ACs) weakened the role of the GCP in promoting TI. These findings have implications for designing better GCPs to promote corporate innovation.

Abstract:Under the background that China’s state-owned enterprises can only obtain lower innovation output due to their special property rights and management system,the ambidextrous innovation was introduced under the theoretical framework of corporate governance from the perspective of system innovation and technology innovation. On this basis,how the implementation of the employee stock ownership plan of state-owned enterprises can alleviate the financing constraints faced by enterprises was discussed in detail,and then affect the overall innovation output and ambidextrous innovation output of enterprises. At the same time,using the relevant data of China’s A-share state-owned listed companies from 2004 to 2020 for empirical testing,it is found that the implementation of the employee stock ownership plan of state-owned enterprises significantly contributes to the improvement of the overall innovation output and utilization innovation output of enterprises,but has no significant impact on the improvement of the exploratory innovation output of enterprises. The specific mechanism of the above phenomenon is consistent with the theoretical analysis,but the effect will be significantly different due to the differences in the internal characteristics of the enterprise and the design characteristics of the employee stock ownership plan. Therefore,it is suggested to actively promote the implementation of employee stock ownership plans in state-owned enterprises in various ways,especially in state-owned enterprises with high proportion of high-tech and highly educated employees,and further optimize the design of stock ownership plans,so as to better play the main role of various employees in enterprise innovation activities.

Abstract:The carbon emission trading scheme (ETS) is critical to China's ability to reach the established carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduction goal by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. To determine whether the pilot ETS policy promulgated in China in 2011 has induced green technological innovation, we conducted a multidimensional empirical test to assess the financial and green patent licensing data of Chinese A-share (publicly listed) enterprises in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2004 to 2019. Using a difference-in-difference model with robustness checks, we did not find that the pilot ETS has had green innovation effects on entire industries or all manufacturing. However, we did identify significant green innovation improvements in some resource-based industrial enterprises, and the promotion effect led to more green utility models than green invention patents. Furthermore, the policy's greatest green-innovation effects are reflected primarily in new patents/utility models for low-carbon, energy-saving, and alternative energy technologies, particularly among large and nonstate enterprises. The impact mechanism tests indicate that the pilot policy encourages green innovation primarily through four policy instruments: increasing benefit income for resource-based industrial enterprises, reducing financial constraints, granting subsidies, and increasing incentives for enterprise R&D. Therefore, this article not only confirms the effectiveness of carbon emission trading market policy, but also provides scientific guidance for the realization of green technology innovation.

Abstract:Sustainable development of a company is an important task in corporate management. Enterprises must constantly innovate and change to achieve sustainable development. In China, considering the need for sustainable development of enterprises and the requirement of the dual carbon goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the environment, social responsibility, and governance (ESG) management and green technology innovation of enterprises are in the spotlight. Therefore, this study aimed to use empirical analysis to verify whether the ESG performance of enterprises promotes corporate green technology innovation and to further explore corporate attributes that promote the relationship between the two. This study selected 933 Chinese A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2019 as the research object and used the fixed effect model to empirically analyze the relationship between ESG performance and the green technology innovation capability of enterprises. The results show that ESG performance plays an important role in promoting green technology innovation capability. Moreover, this study found that, compared to enterprises with low technology levels or short-listing life span, the ESG performance of enterprises with high technology level and long listing life span has a stronger role in promoting the green technology innovation capability of enterprises. Simultaneously, compared with non-state-owned enterprises, state-owned enterprises play a stronger role in the promotion. This study enriches the theoretical mechanism of ESG performance affecting green technology innovation of enterprises, and they have a certain reference value for promoting the sustainable development of enterprises.

Abstract:As China's economy enters the 'new normal' operational stage, the widespread adoption of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has engendered substantial transformations in infrastructure investment and financing practices, progressively moving towards standardization. This study employs indicators such as Research and Development (R&D) investments and the number of patents held by publicly listed companies to assess their innovation performance. Employing a Differences-in-Differences (DID) empirical methodology, and utilizing the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) trend-matching technique to establish experimental and control groups, we empirically investigate whether participation in PPP projects exerts an influence on the innovation investments of listed companies and whether it results in a detrimental crowding-out effect. The empirical findings of our analysis demonstrate that engagement in PPP projects leads to a reduction in the innovation investments made by listed companies, thereby exerting a significant impact. Additionally, the magnitude of the crowding-out effect on innovation is positively correlated with the number of PPP projects, though the effect is not particularly pronounced or statistically significant. This study further conducts an in-depth comparative analysis of the innovation levels observed within state-owned enterprises and private firms. It subsequently proposes targeted solutions aimed at enhancing the innovation capacities of both state-owned and private enterprises.

Abstract:China's economic growth has entered "new normal," and the task of reducing carbon emissions has become more onerous. Hence, this study aimed to explore whether China's carbon emissions trading pilot policy stimulated corporate green innovation capabilities. The data pertained to the green patent data of the listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges during 2008–2018. Using a difference-in-difference-in-differences (DDD) method, the study took advantage of the variations across regions, across enterprises, and across years and obtained several novel findings. First, the pilot carbon emissions trading policy significantly stimulated the green innovation capabilities of emission control companies in the pilot areas compared with enterprises in nonpilot areas and the nonemission control list. Second, the effect of the policy on the improvement in corporate green innovation capabilities might be driven by the improvement in corporate input factor allocation efficiency and the additional benefits that could be obtained from the carbon trading market. Third, the positive effect of the policy on the green innovation capabilities of state-owned enterprises was more significant. Therefore, the establishment and promotion of a unified national carbon emissions trading market and supporting mechanisms should be accelerated to achieve the balance of stable economic growth and carbon emission task.

Abstract:The green credit policy (GCP) is an institutional framework aimed at guiding enterprises towards green transformation and promoting high-quality development, which serves as a crucial tool for supporting the establishment of a green technology innovation system. In this study, utilizing the green credit guidelines as a quasi-natural experiment and constructed a continuous difference-in-difference (DID) model, examines the impact of GCP impact on enterprise green innovation and its internal mechanisms by analyzing data from Chinese A-share listed companies between 2006 and 2021. Our findings indicate that the GCP had a significant impact on enterprise green innovation, inhibiting companies from in-dependently developing green innovation while promoting joint green innovation with other institutions; These results were robust and consistent, even after conducting several sensitiv-ity analyses; This mechanism indicate that the commercial credit plays an important regulatory role in the process of GCP affecting green innovation of enterprises and the financing constraints act as an intermediary factor in the process of GCP affecting green innovation. Based on our research, we offer policy recommendations aimed at improving the GCP and fostering a market-oriented green technology innovation system.

Abstract:Green innovation is pivotal for global sustainability, with state-owned capital playing a significant role, especially in the Chinese corporate landscape. This study, spanning 2008 to 2020 and leveraging a comprehensive dataset of listed companies, explores the intricate relationship between state-owned capital and the quality of green innovation in Chinese private enterprises. Motivated by the imperative to address crucial issues in green innovation quality in China, this research utilizes empirical data to uncover the mechanisms through which state-owned capital fosters green innovation. The study reveals how state-owned capital optimizes internal governance structures and reinforces environmental consciousness within private firms. Findings underscore the crucial role of state-owned capital in enhancing the quality of green innovation in private enterprises, operating through two primary mechanisms. Firstly, state-owned capital cultivates a heightened inclination towards green innovation within these firms. Secondly, it facilitates the adoption of enhanced internal governance practices, catalyzing the development of high-quality green innovation projects. A battery of mechanism tests provides robust evidence that state-owned capital enhances environmental awareness, restrains self-serving behaviors among major shareholders, mitigates financing constraints, and amplifies the motivation and capability of private enterprises for green innovation. This multifaceted approach ultimately fosters high-quality green innovation within companies. The study reveals the subtle interplay between state capital and private sector green innovation, highlighting its relevance to policymaking and practical considerations. It provides valuable insights into the ongoing pursuit of sustainability and the integration of green practices into the corporate world.
