Abstract:In recent years, mobile data gathering in wireless sensor networks has attracted much interests in the research community. However, despite extensive efforts, many of previous work in this area lies only in theory and evaluates network performance with computer simulations, which leaves a large gap from reality. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a general purpose, flexible platform for mobile data gathering in wireless sensor networks to evaluate network performance and algorithms in a practical setting. Instead of relying on hand-crafted theoretical models, our platform integrates both mobile data collector and sensor nodes to provide realistic performance evaluations. In addition, the platform adopts a modular design in mobile data collector and sensor nodes, and equips the mobile data collector with advanced computing capability, which makes it versatile for evaluating the performance of a wide-range of applications. Finally, as a case study, weimplement a wildlife monitoring system on our platform. Our experimental results demonstrate that real implementations can evaluate many practical performance factors which would have a great impact on the sensing results and are very difficult to fully capture by theoretical models and simulations. We expect that this platform can become a very powerful general tool for more accurate network simulations and facilitate performance optimization in wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:This paper presents a network platform developed for remote pseudo dynamic testing of substructures and structural elements, and discusses the results of trial tests. The network platform, NetSLab, was developed based on client/server concept along with a proposed data model and communication protocols. The platform is capable of transferring control and feedback data among remote structural testing laboratories or computers connected by Internet. Several concepts were introduced to realize the platform and to provide relatively easier and friendlier interface for applications and further development by users. Trial tests were successfully carried out at the Hunan University, China and the University of Southern California, USA. In the trial tests, models simulating bridge piers or piles were subjected to recorded earthquake ground motions controlled remotely over the Internet through the platform.

Abstract:This paper presents automatic switched optical networks (ASONs) test-bed based on GMPLS made by Tsinghua University in details. The test-bed contains three plans: transport, control and management. The transport plane is formed with four optical crossconnects (OXCs) and one optical adding and dropping multiplexer (OADM); the control plane is constructed with signaling, routine, link management and UNI modules which are based on GMPLS protocols, and the simplified management plane is developed for the purpose of switched permanent connection. The test-bed possesses changeable topologies and is suitable for researches in optical network with different purposes. The architecture of the test-bed and modules for control plane are presented in the paper. Some experiments within the test-bed are also described.

Abstract:In this paper, the GMPLS (Generalized Multi Protocol Label Switching) based ASON (Automatically Switched Optical Network) test-bed is introduced. This test-bed composes of three different planes, namely the transport plane, the control plane and the management plane. There are four OXCs (Optical Cross Connection) and one OADM (Optical Adding/Dropping Mulitplexer) in the transport plane. The modules developed in the control plane include the link management module, the routing module and the signaling module, whose implementation are fully in compliance with international standards. In the management plane, configuration management and fault management are implemented. As an ASON test-bed, it supports several characteristic functions of next generation optical network, for instance, the run-time reconfigurable topology, automatic discovery of neighbors and services, constraint based routing and fast protection and restoration in the optical domain.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the way to develop a laboratory testing, measurement and analysis platforms for the fundamental problems with the information networks and their applications. The platform applies software defined network (SDN) and virtualization technologies for scalability, reconfigurability and flexibility. We successfully emulated large-scale scenarios at the laboratory scale platform by generating numerous virtual nodes in a server. The nodes' physical characteristics (such as CPU frequency, memory, operating system, etc.) and the link characteristics (rate, BER, delay, etc.) between any two nodes are considered so as to simulate the real space environment approximately. Emulation performances show that the proposed platform has a scalable network emulation architecture and can provide better approach to simulate a complex, dynamic and high precision network.

Abstract:Wide attention has been drawn to the application of space networks (SN) in recent years. Compared with terrestrial networks, SN have a set of unique characteristics, e.g., a long propagation delay, time-varying channel quality, and dynamic link connection, which causes the inapplicability of mature terrestrial networking technologies. Therefore, the focus of SN application is to innovate and break through a series of key networking technologies and protocols. Network emulation is critical for evaluation and verification in the research of networking technologies and protocols. This paper concentrates on designing an emulation platform which provides a realistic, flexible, and extensible experimental environment for the SN. The architecture of platform includes four components, namely the logical plane, control plane, data plane and measurement plane. Container technology is adopted to flexibly symbolize network nodes. The emulation method of dynamic connection relationships and time-varying link characteristics between pairwise nodes are considered so as to realize the real space environment and arbitrary topology. Furthermore, an extensible structure is described to emulate large-scale scenarios and access external emulation resources. Finally, experiment results show that the proposed platform is capable of emulating diverse, dynamic, and complex SN scenarios with high precision.

An Extensible Emulation and Network Performance Analysis System for Space Information Network.

Abstract:Due to the development of the SIN (Space Information Network) and its characteristics which lead to scenarios that could not be encountered in terrestrial network, large-scale emulation and experimental verification are urgently needed. Various kinds of network simulation methods exist for SIN but are generally lack of flexibility (e.g. real network emulation) or accuracy (e.g. OPNET, NS and etc.). In previous works, we had presented a laboratory scale platform, based on SDN (Software Defined Networking) and virtualization technologies, to conduct credible research and testing on SIN. In this paper, we describe a distributed and extensible architecture on the basis of the original platform and use Docker to reduce the need of computing resources. Then, we construct a Spark-based network analysis system which supports capturing network traffic and analyzing network performance for different emulation scenarios among our platform. Experiments demonstrate that the platform performs well for the emulation of SIN and the analysis system can analyze network performance efficiently.

Abstract:The networking community has made a significant investment in GMPLS networks, which are connection-oriented networks that support dynamic call-by-call bandwidth sharing. Currently, GMPLS switches are call blocking and GMPLS control-plane protocols only support immediate requests for bandwidth. This thesis first addresses the question of suitability for different types of applications for GMPLS networks. Using the Erlang-B formula, we reason that GMPLS networks are well suited for applications in which the required per-circuit bandwidth is on the order of one-hundredth the shared link capacity. Then, we propose two applications for the GMPLS network, CHEETAH, which we have deployed as part of an NSF-sponsored project. The first is a web transfer application, for which we design and implement a software package called WebFT. We integrate the CHEETAH end-host software modules into WebFT to provide deterministic data-transfer services transparently to users. The CHEETAH network provides connection-oriented services in addition to the connectionless service offered by the Internet. This “add-on” design allows the WebFT package to provide normal web access to non–CHEETAH clients through the Internet while simultaneously serving CHEETAH clients on dedicated circuits. The experiments conducted on the CHEETAH testbed show that WebFT can achieve low-variance, end-to-end transfer delays at different circuit rates and low transfer delays when high-speed circuits are possible. The second application is parallel file transfers on CHEETAH. We identify that two factors limit file-transfer throughput on networks with a high bandwidth-delay product: TCP’s congestioncontrol algorithm and end-host limitations. Abstract:Network emulation is an essential method to test network architecture, protocol and application software during a network's entire life-cycle. Compared with simulation and test-bed methods, network emulation possesses the advantages of accuracy and cost-efficiency. However, legacy network emulators are typically restricted in scalability, agility, and extensibility, which builds barriers to prevent them from being widely used. In this paper, we introduce the currently prevalent cloud computing and the related technologies including resource virtualization, NFV (network functional virtualization), SDN (software-defined networking), traffic control and flow steering to the network emulation domain. We design and implement an innovative cloud-based network emulation platform, aiming at providing users Network Emulation as a Service (NEaaS), which can be conveniently deployed on both public and private clouds. In order to emulate networks of much larger scale, and to reduce the hardware cost of the proposed platform, a representative light-weighted virtualization technology, namely Docker container is adopted as a supplement to virtual machine (VM) to emulate networking nodes in a hybrid manner. We carried out a comprehensive performance evaluation with in-depth discussions for this emulation platform. It turns out, our platform can significantly outperform legacy network emulators regarding to scalability, agility, and extensibility in large scale emulation scenarios, with much lower costs. Finally, a case study of applying the proposed platform to emulate a typical space-ground integrated network (SGIN) is given, which illustrates the platform's effectivity and efficiency.

Abstract:Optical Virtual Private Network (OVPN) is an increasingly important application of Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON). To meet the demands of today's different types of network services, dynamic OVPN technique is studied and two new functions are brought forward, which are dynamic connection management, and fast protection/restoration. We realize dynamic OVPN technique in the first ASON testbed in China, based on GMPLS signaling mechanism. The dynamic OVPN technique makes the optical network able to provide customers with reliable and flexible services by more functional and intelligent methods.

Abstract:The space-ground integrated network (SGIN) is an important direction of future network development and is expected to play an important role in edge computing for the Internet of Things (IoT). Through integration with an SGIN, IoT applications can provide services with long-distance and wide-coverage features. However, SGINs are typical large-scale and time-varying networks for which new network technologies, protocols, and applications must be rigorously evaluated and validated. Therefore, a reliable experimental platform is necessary for SGINs. This paper presents a cloud-based experimental platform for the SGIN context named SGIN-Stack. First, the architecture of SGIN-Stack, which combines the Systems Tool Kit (STK) and OpenStack, is described. Based on this architecture, a seamless linkage between OpenStack and STK is achieved to realize synchronous, dynamic, and real-time network emulation for an SGIN, and the dynamic differential compensation technology and a random number generation algorithm are applied to improve the emulation accuracy for satellite links. Finally, an emulation scenario is constructed that includes six space-based backbone nodes, sixty-six space-based access nodes, and a ground station. Based on this emulation scenario, experiments concerning the satellite link delays, bit error ratio (BER), and throughput are carried out to prove the high fidelity of our SGIN-Stack platform. Emulation experiments involving satellite orbital maneuvers and attitude adjustments show that SGIN-Stack can be used for dynamic and real-time SGIN emulation.

Abstract:Software-defined networking (SDN) enables efficient network management. As the technology matures, utilities are looking to integrate those benefits to their operations technology (OT) networks. To help the community to better understand and evaluate the effects of such integration, we develop DSSnet, a testing platform that combines a power distribution system simulator and an SDN-based network emulator for smart grid planning and evaluation. DSSnet relies on a container-based virtual time system to achieve efficient synchronization between the simulation and emulation systems. To enhance the system scalability and usability, we extend DSSnet to support a distributed controller environment. To enhance system fidelity, we extend the virtual time system to support kernel-based switches. We also evaluate the system performance of DSSnet and demonstrate the usability of DSSnet with a resilient demand response application case study.

Abstract:The major goal of TE (traffic engineering) is to facilitate efficient and reliable network operations while simultaneously optimizing network utilization and traffic performance. Therefore it is necessary to introduce TE mechanism to ISPs' (Internet Service Providers') networks with the purpose of improving network performance and reducing costs. In this paper, a novel TE mechanism based on GMPLS (Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching) [1] is proposed and analyzed in detail, and is demonstrated on a network with IP over ASON (automatically switched optical network) [2] architecture. The ASON layer acts as the server of IP layer which uses traditional IP protocols, and realizes TE mechanism through the method of dynamically changing bandwidth seen by IP layer through UNI (User-Network Interface). Simulation results have shown that the model has a superior operational agility to the conventional method and lower congestion probability in certain conditions.

Abstract:<p>With the development of society, ground communication technologies are hard to meet the demands of communicating at anytime and from anywhere. As a result, the integrated space-ground information network, which connects the satellites with ground stations to provide seamless and efficient global communications, is becoming one of the most important and potential networks for future communications. In the integrated space-ground information network, satellite network is a crucial part, in which problems caused by the dynamics are eager to be solved. To investigate those problems, this paper proposed an integrated space-ground information network simulation platform with STK(Satellite Tool Kit), Mininet and ONOS(Open Network Operating System) to simulate SDN(Software Defined Network) enabled networking devices. We designed a 3-layer(GEO/MEO/LEO) Walker constellation, a topology construction algorithm depending on available times of ISLs(inter-satellite links) and a routing algorithm considering both the processing delay and transmission delay. The simulation results show that the proposed topology construction algorithm could provide a relatively stable topology and reduce the computational resource consumption and the routing algorithm could control the delay of path to improve the quality of service. Indeed, the platform can support the simulation of integrated space-ground network with a good performance in solving problems caused by the dynamics of the satellite network.</p>

Abstract:Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) based on space-ground integrated networks (SGINs) enable CPSs to break through geographical restrictions in space. Therefore, providing a test platform is necessary for new technical verification and network security strategy evaluations of SGINs. User behavior emulation technology can effectively support the construction of a test platform. Given the inherent dynamic changes, diverse behaviors, and large-scale characteristics of SGIN users, we propose user behavior emulation technology based on a cloud platform. First, the dynamic emulation architecture for user behavior for SGINs is designed. Then, normal user behavior emulation strategy driven by the group user behavior model in real time is proposed, which can improve the fidelity of emulation. Moreover, rogue user behavior emulation technology is adopted, based on traffic replay, to perform the security evaluation. Specifically, virtual Internet Protocol (IP) technology and the epoll model are effectively integrated in this investigation to resolve the contradiction between large-scale emulation and computational overhead. The experimental results demonstrate that the strategy meets the requirement of a diverse and high-fidelity dynamic user behavior emulation and reaches the emulation scale of 100,000-level concurrent communication for normal users and 100,000-level concurrent attacks for rogue users.

Abstract:With the rapid development of space networks, new space communications protocols are emerging, for which emulation is an essential step during design and test. In this paper, we propose a lab-based testbed, in which software and hardware tools are utilized together to emulate full network protocol stack. A software protocol gateway is implemented to preform protocol conversion like IP over CCSDS in Data Link Layer. A specified hardware, Cortex CRT-Q is adopted for accurate emulation of space links, which connects upper layers with Physical Layer. Thus, our testbed benefit from both the fidelity provided by hardware and flexibility brought by software.
Plotinus: A Satellite Internet Digital Twin System

Abstract:The development of an integrated space-air-ground network (SAGIN) requires sophisticated satellite Internet emulation tools that can handle complex, dynamic topologies and offer in-depth analysis. Existing emulation platforms struggle with challenges like the need for detailed implementation across all network layers, real-time response, and scalability. This paper proposes a digital twin system based on microservices for satellite Internet emulation, namely Plotinus, which aims to solve these problems. Plotinus features a modular design, allowing for easy replacement of the physical layer to emulate different aerial vehicles and analyze channel interference. It also enables replacing path computation methods to simplify testing and deploying algorithms. In particular, Plotinus allows for real-time emulation with live network traffic, enhancing practical network models. The evaluation result shows Plotinus's effective emulation of dynamic satellite networks with real-world devices. Its adaptability for various communication models and algorithm testing highlights Plotinus's role as a vital tool for developing and analyzing SAGIN systems, offering a cross-layer, real-time and scalable digital twin system.

Abstract:Space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) is envisioned as a promising solution to provide cost-effective, large-scale, and flexible wireless coverage and communication services. Since realworld deployment for testing of SAGIN is difficult and prohibitive, an efficient SAGIN simulation platform is requisite. In this article, we present our developed SAGIN simulation platform which supports various mobility traces and protocols of space, aerial, and terrestrial networks. Centralized and decentrallized controllers are implemented to optimize the network functions such as access control and resource orchestration. In addition, various interfaces extend the functionality of the platform to facilitate user-defined mobility traces and control algorithms. We also present a case study where highly mobile vehicular users dynamically choose different radio access networks according to their quality of service (QoS) requirements.
