Abstract:A method has been developed to calibrate the positions of the transducer and the transponder in the ultra-short baseline acoustic position system(USBL).The experimental results show that this method is more reliable and practical than that in the commercial USBL system.

Abstract:In order to propose a efficient, accurate and structure-simplified positioning system, the positioning method based on depth information was studied upon the foundation of the research on existing traditional ultrashort baseline(USBL) positioning system (method based on range). According to the formulas derivation, the positioning error of the depth method and the range method were compared. The numerical simulation analysis of the positioning error was carried out, under the combination of positioning error and Cramer-Rao lower bound(CRLB) theory of the delay estimation and the phase estimation. The results show that, in the case of long range positioning, the positioning accuracy based on depth information is higher than that of the range method, especially at high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR). In addition, the depth-based system also has the advantages of simple structure and fast positioning because the signal round-trip time is unnecessary to be measured.

Abstract:Hydrophone is a receiver transducer used to receive acoustic signals and convert them into electrical signals, and has been widely applied in the fields of ocean observation and biomedical. Calibrating hydrophones is essential to ensure that they can provide accurate and reliable measurements. International Electrotechnical Commission provides a series of methods and experimental procedures for hydrophone calibrations, and some studies also have proposed many hydrophones calibration schemes. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and generalize these methods to provide a referable review of the development history, current status, and directions in hydrophone calibration researches. Specifically, this paper focuses on discussing the differences between ocean observation hydrophones and biomedical ultrasound transducers to obtain their requirements for sensitivity and directivity calibrations, further analyzes the consistency and differences of calibration methods used for the two types of hydrophones, and discusses the conflicts between the ideal and experimental conditions of the calibration methods to derive the challenges faced by the existing calibration methods.
A New Angle-Calibration Method for Precise Ultra-Short Baseline Underwater Positioning

Abstract:Ultra-short baseline (USBL) underwater positioning systems are widely used in marine scientific research and ocean engineering. Angle misalignment is a main error that reduces the accuracy of USBL underwater positioning. The conventional angle-calibration method assumes that the transponder position obtained by USBL positioning is an errorless coefficient matrix. However, errors inevitably exist in the estimation of the transponder's position via USBL positioning, and the precision varies at different epochs. Ignoring the error in the transponder's position will significantly reduce the precision of the angle misalignment estimation. In this paper, a new angle-calibration method is proposed for precise USBL underwater positioning. The angle alignment model is derived by treating the transponder's position obtained by USBL positioning as an observation, and the stochastic model is then established according to the bearing angles. Robust estimation is likewise applied to further improve the precision of the angle misalignment estimation. To verify the performance of the proposed method, a sea experiment was performed. The results show that the new method has high calibration accuracy and robustness. The estimation precision of this method is improved by 0.0457°~0.6896° in heading, 0.0125°~0.8072° in roll, and 0.0077°~0.9436° in pitch, compared with that of the conventional angle alignment method.

Abstract:Abstract The installation error of an acoustic transceiver array is one of the important error sources in an ultra-short baseline (USBL) system. In a USBL system with a positioning accuracy of 0.5%, an installation error angle of 1° will lead to a positioning error of 1.7% times the slant distance. In this paper, a dual transponder-based installation angle error calibration method for USBL is proposed. First, the positioning errors induced by various installation angles are deduced and analysed using the linear measurement of seafloor targets. Then, an iterative algorithm is proposed that estimates the rolling alignment error, pitching alignment error, and heading alignment error, in that order. The simulation and experienced results show that, after three iterations, the estimates of the three alignment errors can converge quickly, all of the estimates converge to within 0.001° and the estimated values are very close to the true values. The horizontal positioning error caused by the installation error angle can be reduced by nearly 75%. The method has good effectiveness and robustness, and can greatly improve the positioning accuracy of the USBL system.

Abstract:The Ultra-short baseline (USBL) positioning system has important application in the positioning of underwater vehicles. The installation error angle of the USBL positioning system has an important influence on the positioning accuracy of USBL system. The traditional calibration methods have limited estimation accuracy for installation error angles and have high route requirements. To solve the above problems, a calibration method of installation error angle based on attitude determination is proposed in this paper. When strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) and USBL are fixed together in the application process, the installation error angle of USBL is fixed and unchanged. Then the calibration of installation error angle can be accomplished with the idea of attitude determination. The vector observation model based on the installation error angle matrix is established first. Observation vectors are obtained by the relative position of transponders in the USBL coordinate frame. The reference vector is calculated by position of transponder, position and attitude of SINS and lever arm between SINS and USBL. By constructing the observation vectors and the reference vectors, the proposed method can calibrate the installation error angle of SINS and USBL in real time. The advantages of the proposed method are that it has no specific requirements for the calibration route and can calibrate the installation error angle in real time with high accuracy. In order to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, simulation experiment and field experiment are carried out in this paper. The results of simulation experiment and field experiment show that the proposed method can give the estimated installation error angle of USBL in real time, and the estimated result is the best among several methods. The proposed method can not only achieve the calibration of the installation error angle in circular trajectory, but also in straight trajectory.

Abstract:Aiming at calibration mission requirement for calibration in special environment,such as maritime tracking and control,present a convenient and dynamic calibration micro beacon ball,which contains a lithium battery,a double frequency global positioning system( GPS),a UCB transponder and an integrated electronic module,etc. Double frequency GPS provides raw measurement data and self-positioning results; UCB transponder can transfer data to the ground station and can be used as a C-band calibration cooperative target,which is used for intercalibration of ground measurement and control equipment radar and UCB device. The weight of the beacon ball is 1 kg,the power consumption is 10 W,the volume is 25 cm × 25 cm × 10 cm,working hours is as long as 16 h,the positioning precision is better than 1m,and flying test at a base is successfully conducted.

Abstract:In view of the shortcomings of traditional calibration methods and the differential GPS based post-calibration method for ground-based TT&C systems, a real-time calibration method based on satellite-to-ground differential GPS was proposed. Compared with the differential GPS based post-calibration method, the real-time calibration method enables the ground-based TT&C systems to obtain the calibrated measurement data in time to carry out orbit determination and prediction in real time and to timely inject the orbit parameters to improve the operational performance of the satellite. In view of the long baseline, high dynamic and real-time satellite-to-ground calibration scenario, all kinds of errors affecting the performance of satellite-to-ground baseline estimation and the correction effectiveness of these errors were systematically analyzed, and the concept of relative position dilution precision was proposed, thus obtaining the accuracy budget of satellite-to-ground baseline estimation. A robust adaptive Kalman filter algorithm was used as the real-time satellite-to-ground baseline estimation algorithm, and a weighted least square method was employed to solve the real-time measurement error of the ground-based TT&C system, so as to obtain the calibration results. A hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform was established by using spaceborne dual frequency GPS receivers and a navigation signal simulator. The simulation results show that, after real-time calibration, the residual ranging error of the TT&C system is reduced to about 40 cm, and the residual velocity measurement error is reduced to less than 1 cm/s, which is consistent with the theoretical analysis, and can well meet the requirements of future space missions.

Abstract:Array calibration can effectively ensure the positioning accuracy of the ultra-short baseline (USBL) system. Traditional USBL array calibration methods focus on measuring the geometric position of the array elements. However, directional phase differences on the receive path are often ignored in the current calibration process, which can also cause array mismatch, especially when using the superdirective beamforming (SDB) technique. To further improve the calibration accuracy and convenience of the USBL using the SDB technique, a fast calibration method is proposed in this paper. In the new method, the hydrophone geometry error and the receiver path phase error are jointly considered. Then, two calibration models with different complexity are presented, and the conventional beamforming (CBF) beam output is deconvoluted with the calibrated beam pattern. The results of anechoic tank experiments show that the bearing root mean square error (RMSE) can be reduced from 1.663° to 0.081°, and the calibration time can be reduced from hours to tens of minutes.
Targetless Calibration of LiDAR-IMU System Based on Continuous-time Batch Estimation

Abstract:Sensor calibration is the fundamental block for a multi-sensor fusion system. This paper presents an accurate and repeatable LiDAR-IMU calibration method (termed LI-Calib), to calibrate the 6-DOF extrinsic transformation between the 3D LiDAR and the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Regarding the high data capture rate for LiDAR and IMU sensors, LI-Calib adopts a continuous-time trajectory formulation based on B-Spline, which is more suitable for fusing highrate or asynchronous measurements than discrete-time based approaches. Additionally, LI-Calib decomposes the space into cells and identifies the planar segments for data association, which renders the calibration problem well-constrained in usual scenarios without any artificial targets. We validate the proposed calibration approach on both simulated and real-world experiments. The results demonstrate the high accuracy and good repeatability of the proposed method in common humanmade scenarios. Abstract:The ultra-short baseline underwater positioning is one of the most widely applied methods in underwater positioning and navigation due to its simplicity, efficiency, low cost, and accuracy. However, there exists environmental noise, which has negative impacts on the positioning accuracy during the ultra-short baseline (USBL) positioning process, which results in a large positioning error. The positioning result may lead to wrong decision-making in the latter processing. So, it is necessary to consider the error sources, and take effective measurements to minimize the negative impact of the noise. In our work, we propose a USBL positioning system with Kalman filtering to improve the positioning accuracy. In this system, we first explore a new kind of element array to accurately capture the acoustic signals from the object. We then organically combine the Kalman filters with the array elements to filter the acoustic signals, using the minimum mean-square error rule to obtain accurate acoustic signals. We got the high-precision phase difference information based on the non-equidistant quaternary original array and the phase difference acquisition mechanism. Finally, on account of the obtained accurate phase difference information and position calculation, we determined the coordinates of the underwater target. Comprehensive evaluation results demonstrate that our proposed USBL positioning method based on the Kalman filter algorithm can effectively enhance the positioning accuracy.

Abstract:—Sensor calibration is a prerequisite for multi- sensor fusion system. This paper presents a novel method for calibrating the extrinsic transformation between a multi- beam LiDAR and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) based on continuous-time batch optimization. The continuous-time formulation is well suitable for the problem with a large number of measurements, such as the LiDAR points in this calibration problem. Furthermore, since poses at every time instant are available in this continuous-time formulation, LiDAR distortion even under severe motion can be corrected. Experiments on both simulated and real-world datasets are carried out, which conﬁrms the feasibility and high accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:Seafloor transponders can track underwater targets, for instance, underwater robots, in x–y space from their received acoustic signals, if the transponder positions are known exactly. However, it is not always possible to deploy the transponder precisely, so a calibration phase is needed to estimate the position of each transponder before doing any tracking or localization. An acoustic transponder can be calibrated from a towed acoustic interrogator. We propose a calibration method called perpendiculars intersection, which is different from traditional methods for transponders in the deep ocean. This method is used to obtain robust and high-resolution acoustic calibration process based on the three-dimensional and analytic geometry. The PI method is formulated combing the selection of measurement data, geometry and the motion dynamics of the moving interrogator. In addition, the least square method is applied to the outlier rejection with Chauvenet criteria. A Markov process is presented to simulate the motion of the research vessel. The Monte-Carlo simulation shows that the error of the estimated transponder position is much less than the GPS error. The probability statistics method of the confidence interval with a confidence degree of 0.99 on the transponder position estimates is also derived to prove that the PI calibration method is favorable with high precision. The performance of the calibration algorithms is demonstrated on the simulation data.
The Fine Calibration of the Ultra-Short Baseline System With Inaccurate Measurement Noise Covariance Matrix

Abstract:The ultra-short baseline (USBL) system has been widely applied in marine positioning fields because of its small size and high positioning accuracy. However, there are particular position and angle deviations between the body frame and the USBL frame in a realistic environment. The presence of range-measuring error in the USBL system is also a non-negligible problem. Besides, the measurement noise covariance matrix may change due to the complicated underwater environment. These factors lead to the reduction in positioning accuracy. Therefore, an improved adaptive Kalman filter for fine calibration of the USBL system is proposed to deal with the problems mentioned above. First, the state model of the fine calibration is established based on installation error angles, lever arms, and range-measuring error. For the first time, the system error is included in the calibration model, thereby reducing the influence of system error on positioning accuracy. A modified nonlinear measurement model based on azimuth and slant range is presented. Second, based on the variational Bayesian method, an adaptive filter is proposed to do with the unknown and time-varying measurement noise. Finally, the numerical simulation and field trial are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The advantage of this algorithm is that the system error and installation errors can be estimated simultaneously and the system adjusts the measurement noise covariance matrix adaptively to improve the positioning accuracy.

Abstract:To fulfill the demand for high-precision underwater acoustic positioning at full sea depth, an ultra-short baseline (USBL) positioning method with the square array based on the least squares estimating signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (LS-ESPRIT) algorithm is presented in this paper. A combination of beam tracking and beamforming is employed to improve the accuracy of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and, consequently, enhance overall positioning accuracy. In order to mitigate the issue of position jumping resulting from phase ambiguity in traditional four-element cross arrays, we have improved the stability of the positioning algorithm by utilizing a multi-element square array and employing the LS-ESPRIT algorithm for DOA estimation. Furthermore, the signal detection method integrating the correlation coefficient and ascending/descending chirp signals is employed to enhance the reliability of the location algorithm. Simulation analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm effectively enhances positioning accuracy and improves the problem of jumping in positioning results.

Abstract:The ultra-short baseline (USBL) positioning system has been widely used for autonomous and remotely operated vehicle (ARV) positioning in marine resource surveying and ocean engineering fields due to its flexible installation and portable operation. Errors related to the sound speed are a critical factor limiting the positioning performance. The conventional strategy adopts a fixed sound velocity profile (SVP) to correct the spatial variation, especially in the vertical direction. However, SVP is actually time-varying, and ignoring this kind of variation will lead to a worse estimation of ARVs'coordinates. In this contribution, we propose a two-step sound speed correction method, where, firstly, the deviation due to the acoustic ray bending effect is corrected by the depth-based ray-tracing policy with the fixed SVP. Then, the temporal variation of SVP is considered, and the fixed SVP is adaptively adjusted according to the in situ sound velocity (SV) measurements provided by the conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) sensor equipped at the ARV. The proposed method is verified by semi-physical simulation and sea-trail dataset in the South China Sea. When compared to the fixed-SVP method, average positioning accuracy with the resilient SVP be improved by 8%, 21%, and 26% in the east, north, and up directions, respectively. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can efficiently improve the adaptability of sound speed observations and deliver better performance in USBL real-time positioning.

Abstract:The ultra-short baseline positioning system (USBL) has the advantages of flexible application and easy installation, and it plays an extremely important role in the underwater positioning and communication. The error of the USBL in underwater positioning is mainly caused by a ranging error due to ray tracing, a phase difference error of the USBL, and acoustic noise in the underwater communication. Most of these errors are related to the changes in the sound speed during its propagation through the ocean. Therefore, when using the USBL for underwater detection, it is necessary to correct the sound speed profile in the detection area and optimize the ray tracing. Taking into account the actual conditions, this paper aims at correcting the model of underwater sound speed propagation and improving the tracking method of sound lines when the marine environment in the shallow sea area changes. This paper proposes a combined ray tracing method that can adaptively determine whether to use the constant sound speed ray tracing method or the equal gradient ray tracing method. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the error of slant distance in USBL compared with the traditional acoustic tracking method and the constant sound speed ray tracing method. The proposed sound ray correction algorithm solves the contradiction between the number of iterations and the reduction of positioning error and has engineering application value.
Improving the underwater navigation performance of an IMU with acoustic long baseline calibration

Abstract:Underwater acoustic Long-Baseline System (LBL) is an important technique for submarine positioning and navigation. However, the high cost of the seafloor equipment and complex construction of a seafloor network restrict the distribution of the LBL within a small area, making an underwater vehicle difficult for long-distance and high-precision acoustic-based or inertial-based navigation. We therefore propose an acoustic LBL-based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) calibration algorithm. When the underwater vehicle can receive the acoustic signal from a seafloor beacon, the IMU is precisely calibrated to reduce the cumulative error of Strapdown Inertial Navigation System (SINS). In this way, the IMU is expected to maintain a certain degree of accuracy by relying solely on SINS when the vehicle reaches out the range of the LBL network and cannot receive the acoustic signal. We present the acoustic LBL-based IMU online calibration model and analyze the factors that affect the accuracy of IMU calibration. The results fulfill the expectation that the gyroscope bias and accelerometer bias are the main error sources that affect the divergence of SINS position errors, and the track line of the underwater vehicle directly affects the accuracy of the calibration results. In addition, we deduce that an optimal calibration trajectory needs to consider the effects of the three-dimensional observability and position dilution of precision. In the experiment, we compare the effects of seven calibration trajectories: straight and diamond-shaped with and without the change of depth, and three sets of curves with the change of depth: circular, S-shaped, and figure-eight. Among them, we find that the figure-eight is the optimal trajectory for acoustic LBL-based IMU online calibration. We take the maintenance period during which the accumulated SINS Three Dimensional (3D) position errors are below 1 km to evaluate the calibration performance. The filed experimental results show that for the Micro-electromechanical Systems-grade IMU sensor, the maintenance period for the IMU calibrated with the proposed algorithm can be increased by 121% and 38.9% compared to the IMU without calibration and with the laboratory default parameter calibration, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed calibration algorithm.

Improved calibration method of vertical lines intersection for coordinates of transponder in deep ocean

Abstract:Seafloor transponders are used to track and determine the underwater targets.However,it is always impossible to deploy a transponder precisely in deep ocean because of current,wave and surge.A calibration phase is needed to estimate the position of each transponder before doing any tracking or localization.A method which is called improved vertical lines intersection for measurement of the coordinate of bottom transponder is presented for modification of previous methods.This method applies solid geometry and analytic geometry principia to get the coordinate of transponder directly,without requirements of navigation vessel track and sea depth.The Markov process is adopted to simulate vessel movement,and the statistical confidence interval with confidence of 0.99 is obtained from Monte-Carlo emulation of 1000 times.The results show that the improved vertical lines intersection method owns fine accuracy and favorable robustness for position error of research ship.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the ultrashort baseline (USBL) installation error is difficult to accurately calibrate in the complex underwater environment. In this article, based on smooth variable structure and unscented Kalman filter, a novel USBL installation error calibration algorithm is proposed. First, the nonlinear system model of USBL installation error based on the filter estimation principle is analyzed. On this basis, the USBL installation error calibration algorithm based on the principle of unscented Kalman filter is given. Second, in view of the shortcomings of the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) calibration algorithm, smooth variable structure is introduced, and a novel algorithm combining a smooth variable structure and UKF is proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm proposed in this article is verified by simulation and river test. The results show that the algorithm proposed in this article can accurately and stably estimate the USBL installation error parameters when the underwater acoustic signal is disturbed.

Abstract:This paper describes a novel method for the calibration of the position and time delay of transducer elements in a large, sparse array used for underwater, high-resolution ultrasound imaging. This method is based on the principles used in the global positioning system (GPS). However, unlike GPS, in which the wave propagation speed is generally assumed known, the sound propagation speed in the water usually is unknown and it is calibrated simultaneously in this method to achieve high calibration accuracy. In this method, a high-precision positioning system is used to scan a single hydrophone (used for transmission) in the imaging field of the array. The hydrophone transmits pulses at selected positions, and the transducer elements in the sparse array receive the transmitted signals. Time of flight (TOF) values between transducer elements and hydrophone positions then are measured. From a series of measured TOF values, the position and time delay values for each transducer element as well as the propagation speed can be calibrated. The performances of the calibration algorithm are theoretically analyzed and evaluated with numerical calculations and simulation studies. It is found that this method is capable of calibrating the positions and time delays of transducer elements with high accuracy.
