Abstract:The Advanced Synthetic aperture Radar (ASAR), to be launched on ENVISAT, is a tool for mapping and monitoring the Earth's surface (ESA, 1998). It is an all-weather, day-and-night, high resolution imaging instrument which will provide radar backscatter measurements indicative of terrain structure, surface roughness and dielectric constant. Important new capabilities of ASAR included beam steering for acquiring images with different incidence angles, dual polarization and wide swath coverage. In China, Crop structure adjustment policy has brought great change different breed's planting area in different years. Crop acreage monitoring is necessary for wise management of plant natural resources. It is hard to acquire optical remote sensing data in crop growing regions in Chengdu plain, so the objective of this research is to evaluate multitemporal ENVISAT advanced systhetic aperture radar (ASAR) data for extracting agricultural crops area. This paper combines the three band data, and estimates the rice area based on the fieldwork in 2005. The results show that ENVISAT ASAR data have great potential for the applications of estimating crop area.
