Abstract:Aim To study the chemical constituents of Hedysarum gmelinii. Methods The constituents were separated and purified by different methods of chromatography, and their structures were elucidated by IR, MS and NMR. Results Eight compounds were isolated from Hedysarum gmelinii, including three triterpenoids, two flavonoids and two other compounds. Their structures were identified as squasapogenol (1), soyasapogenol (2), lupeol (3), 3, 9-dihydroxy coumestan (4), 3-hydroxy-9-methoxy pterocarpan (5), β-sitosterol (6), palmatic acid (7), and hexadecanoic acid 2, 3-dihydroxypropyl ester (8). Conclusion All the compounds have been isolated from this plant for the first time. Compounds 1-4 and 8 were obtained from this genus for the first time. The NMR data of 1 are reported for the first time.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the chemical constituents of the roots of Hedysarum multijugum Maxim.METHODS:Compounds were isolated and purified by solvent and column chromatographic methods, and their structures were determined on the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic data.RESULTS:Seven compounds warangalone-4'-methyl ether (1), afrormosin (2), sissotrin (3) and ononin (4), naringenin-5, 7-di-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5), apigenin (6) and narcissin (7) were obtained from the roots of Hedysarum multijugum.CONCLUSION:Compound 1 is a new natural product, and other compounds; are obtained from the plant for the first time.

Abstract:Three unusual sesterterpenoids featuring unprecedented rearranged colquhounane (C25) and tetranorcolquhounane (C21) frameworks, colquhounoids E (1) and F (3) and norcolquhounoid F (2), were isolated from a Lamiaceae medicinal plant Colquhounia coccinea var. mollis. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and quantum chemical calculations. A biomimetic inspired regioselective cyclopropane cleavage was achieved under acidic conditions. The immunosuppressive activities of these new sesterterpenoids were also evaluated.

Abstract:In combination with phytochemical results, the pilot chemotaxonomy study on genus Hedysarum by using HPLC methods revealed differences between section Fruticosa and the three other sections Multicaulia, Obscura and Subacaulia, but there was a closer genetic relationship with Multicaulia and Subacaulia. Isoflavonoids and pterocarpans were proved to be the common constituents of genus Hedysarum, whereas pterocarpans, benzofurans, and coumestans were the characteristic constituents of section Fruticosa, and chalcones were the chemical markers of section Multicaulia and section Subacaulia. The present finding is consistent with the classical morphological classification of genus Hedysarum, and provides supporting evidences for dividing Hedysarum into two subgenera, i.e. subgenus Hedysara and subgenus Ruticosa.

Abstract:Chemical investigation on the ethyl acetate extract of the roots of Hedysarum multijugum resulted in the isolation of two new prenylated isoflavonoids: 5, 7, 2′-trihydroxy-4′-methoxy-3′-(γ, γ-dimethylallyl) isoflavone (hedysarimisoflavone A, 1) and 5, 7, 2′-trihydroxy-4′-methoxy-6, 8-di-(γ, γ-dimethylallyl) isoflavone (hedysarimisoflavone B, 2). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses, especially, 1H and 13C NMR spectra in conjunction with their 2D experiments, 1H-1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC, and NOESY.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the chemical constituents of Hedysarum polybotrys.METHOD:Chromatographic methods were used to isolate compounds from H. polybotrys and chemical and spectral methods were used to elucidate the structures of the isolated compounds.RESULT:Five compounds, N,N,N-trimethyl-tropaphone inner salt (hypaphorine) (1), octadecyl-3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-benzeneacrylate (2), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-dihydroflavanone 5,7-di-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), 3,4,5-trimethoxy cinnamic acid methy ester (4) and vanillic acid (5), were isolated from the roots of H. polybotrys.CONCLUSION:Compounds 1, 2 and 3 were obtained from this plant for the first time, while compounds 1 and 2 were isolated from Hedysarum for the first time.

Abstract:Three new iridoid glycosides, hedycorysides A-C (1-3, resp.), were isolated from the whole plant of Hedyotis corymbosa (LINN.) LAM., along with four known compounds. Their structures were elucidated by extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR analysis, as well as by HR-ESI-MS experiments. The three new compounds are the first benzoylated geniposide derivatives from Hedyotis.

Abstract:The fragmentation behavior of four types of phenolic compounds: coumestans, pterocarpenes, benzofurans and isoflavones, were studied using electrospray ionization multistage mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn) (n = 2-5) in negative ion mode. Losses of methyl (15 Da), CO (28 Da), CO2 (44 Da), isopropyl (43 Da) and isobutenyl (55 Da) were dominating fragmentation patterns. Different positions and numbers of the substituents also led to the different fragmentation behavior. These fragmentation rules were applied for the identification of constituents in methanolic extracts of Hedysarum multijugum, in which 29 compounds were characterized, including nine new compounds. The method established in this study could be applied to the comprehensive quality control of the herb and its formulations. It could also be applied to the biological and pharmacological research of traditional Chinese medicines. Copyright (c) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Two previously undescribed coumarins ( 1 and 2 ) were isolated from the root of Hansenia weberbaueriana which have been used to cure inflammatory diseases over thousands of years by Chinese. The structures of new findings were confirmed by comprehensive analyses of spectral evidences in HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR combined with chemical calculations. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited potential anti-inflammatory properties by reducing the mRNA expression levels of TNF-α , IL-6 and IL-1β in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophages at a concentration of 15 μM.

Abstract:A preliminary phytochemical investigation of the stems of the endangered plant Ulmus elongata led to the isolation of a new coumarin derivative (named ulmuselactone A, 1) and eight known compounds (2-9). The new structure was elucidated by detailed analysis of comprehensive spectroscopic methods, and its absolute configuration was established by comparing experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activities.

METHODS: The constituents were isolated with silica gel, ODS column chromatography and semi-preparative HPLC, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of physical characteristics and spectral data. RESULTS: Eight compounds were obtained, and their structures were identified as 3 beta-ethoxytanapartholide (1), (4S*, 5S*)-dihydro-5-[( 1R*, 2S*)-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-oxo-3-cyclopenten-1-yl]-3-methylene-4-(3-oxobutyl)-2(3H)-furanone (2), ligucyperonol (3), cyperusol C (4), santamarin (5), 1 alpha, 2 alpha, 3 alpha, 4 alpha, 10 alpha -pentahydroxyguaia-11(13)-ene-12, 6 alpha-olide (6), balanophonin (7), methyl 3-(2'-hydroxy-4'-methoxyphenyl) propanoate (8). CONCLUSION: Compound 1 was a new artifact, 4 and 8 were isolated from the genus Artemisia for the first time, and compounds 2-3, 5-7 were isolated from this plant for the first time.

Methods: The chemical constituents were isolated and purified by AB-8 macroporous adsorption resin and Sephadex LH-20 column as well as semi-preparative reversed phase HPLC. The chemical structures were identified by spectral data. Results: Ten compounds were isolated and identified as xanthoarnol-3'-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), angedahuricoside A (2), angedahuricoside B (3), isofraxidin-7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4), fraxidin-8-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5), (-)-marmesinin (6), (2'S,3'R)-3'-hydroxymarmesinin (7), hyuganoside V (8), daucosterol (9), and sucrose (10). Conclusion: Compounds 1-3 are new ones and compounds 4-6 and 8 are obtained from title plant for the first time. Abstract:Eight pentacyclic triterpenoids were isolated from the methanol extract of the roots of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa. By application of spectroscopic methods (especially 1D-, 2D-NMR, MS), the structures were established as 23-cis-p-coumaroyloxy-2 alpha,3 beta-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (1), 23-trans-p-coumaroyloxy-2 alpha,3 beta-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (2), 3 beta-O-trans-ferulyl-2 alpha,23-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (3), 3 beta-O-trans-p-coumaroyl-2 alpha,23-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (4), 3 beta-O-cis-p-coumaroyl-2 alpha,23-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (5), maslinic acid (6), arjunolic acid (7), and 2 alpha,3 beta-dihydroxytaraxer-20-en-28-oic acid (8). Among them, compounds 1 and 3 were new oleanane-type triterpenoids, while compounds 2, 4 similar to 6 and 8 were isolated from this plant for the first time. This is the first report on the chemical constituents from the roots of R. tomentosa.

Results Twelve flavonoids were isolated and their structures were identified as 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 3′, 4′ -heptamethoxyflavone (1), nobiletin (2), liquiritigenin (3), hesperetin (4), naringenin (5), liquiritigen-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6), 5, 7, 4′ -trihydroxy-3′- methoxyflavanone -7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6) -β-D-glucopyranoside (7), 6-hydroxybiochain A (8), formononetin (9), daidzein (10), genistein (11), and tectoridin (12). Conclusion All the said compounds were isolated from the plant for the first time.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the chemical constituents of Hedysarum semenovii. METHODS Various chromatographic techniques were used for the isolation and purification and spectral and chemical methods were used for structure elucidation. RESULTS Six isoflavonoids were obtained from H. semenovii and their structures were identified as calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (I), afromosin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (II), afromosin (III),formononetin (IV),calycosin (V) and ononin (VI), respectively. CONCLUSION Six compounds were obtained from H. semenovii for the first time, while compounds I and II were obtained from genus Hedysarum for the first time.

Abstract:Abstract Three new coumarin types were isolated from the aerial parts of the wild medicinal plant Ammi majus , which was collected from western Asia (Saudi Arabia), including pyrano coumarin, namely, 5-isobutylcoumarin-6-C-glucoside (1) ; furanocoumarin, namely, 6,7,9-Trimethoxy-3-(8′-methoxy-2′-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)-2H-furo[3,2-g]chromen-2(3H)-one (2) ; and pyrone coumarin, namely, 6-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxypropyl)-7-methoxy-4 methyl coumarin (3) . The structures were determined by spectroscopic methods, mainly 1D- and 2D-NMR. In vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results of cytotoxicity depending on their structure features showed that compound 3 had high activity on different cell lines, while compound 1 showed no activity against HCT116. Compound 2 had high activity towards HCT116 cell line.
