Abstract:4-n-Nonylphenol (NP) was found to inhibit the sorption of phenanthrene onto three sorbents (natural sediment, organic-free sediment and kaolinite) at very low sorbed concentration, while enhancement of phenanthrene sorption by sorbed NP presented at relative higher NP concentration. This phenomenon was proven by the results of isotherm experiments using non-NP sorbed, low level NP sorbed and relative higher level NP sorbed sorbents, respectively. The site energy distribution analysis showed that the distribution of low-energy sites decreased when sorbed NP existed at the sorbent surface at very low concentration, which suggested competition or steric hindrance of NP to phenanthrene sorption and, at a relative higher concentration, sorbed NP increased the distribution of active sites, which should be due to the bridge action of sorbed NP between hydrophobic organic chemicals and hydrophilic surface. However, it seems hard for sorbed NP to affect the sites with high energy.
