Abstract:Since the discovery of catalysts for the copolymerization of carbon dioxide and I, 2-epoxides in the late 1960' s by Inoue, the design and synthesis of the efficient catalysts for the selective coupling of 1, 2-epoxides and carbon dioxide to afford biodegradable copolymers have made significant gains. It is becoming increasingly clear that this "greener" route to polycarbonates is potential to be supplement to or even supplant current processes for the production of these important thermoplastics, which involve the polymerization of diols and phosgene or organic carbonates. In addition, there is a growing demand for biodegradable polymeric materials. Polycarbonates made from carbon dioxide and 1, 2-epoxide have the potential to meet these goals. This review summarizes the polycarbonate synthesis by the copolymerization of 1,2-epoxide and carbon dioxide in the last five years, especially the mechanism and the effects of catalytic activity on the copolymerization.,
