Abstract:This letter describes a facile self-seeding route to silver nanowires using Dextran which worked as both a sacrificial template and a reducing reagent in aqueous solution. In the entire process, there are not any exotic seeds or stabilizers needed, and the growth mechanism is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Silver nanocrystals with uniform sizes were synthesized in droplet microreactors through seed-mediated growth. The key to the success of this synthesis is the use of air as a carrier phase to generate the droplets. The air not only separates the reaction solution into droplets but also provides O-2 for the generation of reducing agent (glycolaldehyde). It also serves as a buffer space for the diffusion of NO, which is formed in situ due to the oxidative etching of Ag nanocrystals with twin defects. For the first time, we were able to generate Ag nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes in continuous production by using droplet microreactors. For Ag nanocubes, their edge lengths could be readily controlled in the range of 30-100 nm by varying the reaction time, the amount of seeds, and the concentration of AgNO3 in the droplets. Furthermore, we demonstrated the synthesis of Ag octahedra in the droplet microreactors. We believe that the air-driven droplet generation device can be extended to other noble metals for the production of nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes.

Abstract:Many novel applications of silver become possible if silver nanotubes can be produced reliably and easily. A simple, template-assisted procedure is reported here. The Figure shows a scanning electron microscopy image of one of the silver nanotubes, which was broken by ultrasonic vibration, demonstrating that the nanostructure is indeed a hollow nanotube and showing that the nanotube is formed of (crystalline) nanoparticles.

Abstract:A simple and effective approach to the aqueous phase synthesis of crystalline silver nanorods and nanowires is demonstrated, using which their diameters and spect ratios can be effectively controlled. The synthesis involves a template-less and non-seed process to high-quality nanoparticles, which is low-cost and proceeds at moderate temperatures. The nanorods and nanowires were synthesized by the reduction of silver nitrate with tri-sodium citrate in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfonate. The concentration of tri-sodium citrate plays a critical role while sodium dodecylsulfonate, as a capping agent, only plays an assistant role in controlling the diameters and aspect rations of the products. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations show that the silver nanocrystals are generated with a twinned crystalline structure. We also put forward a primary experimental model to shed light on their growth mechanisms.

Abstract:A novel, simple and efficient procedure was developed to electrodeposit one-dimensional Ag nanowires from reverse hexagonal liquid crystalline phases by using their one-dimensional cylindrical aqueous microdomains as space-confined reactors. Using this soft-template approach, flexible Ag nanowire arrays with wire diameter of 15-30 nm, high aspect ratio over 1000, and high wire densities over 10 11 wires/cm 2 were obtained. The Ag nanowire arrays can be easily collected by simply washing. The nanowires obtained can be used either in high-density bundle form or as single wires after dispersion by untrasonication.

Abstract:This paper describes the preparation of uniform silver nanowires by reducing freshly prepared silver chloride with glucose at 180 degrees C for 18 hours in the absence of any surfactants or polymers. Scanning electron microscopy studies indicated that the silver nanowires are about 100 nm in diameter and up to 500 microm in length. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses showed that the silver nanowires grow perpendicularly to the Ag(200) plane. The silver nanowires are believed to grow through a solid-solution-solid process. Some influential factors on the growth of silver nanowires are also discussed.

Abstract:Using a simple wet chemical route, high-yield silver nanowires with an average diameter of 25 +/- 15 nm and length up to several pm and dendrites with a long central backbone and symmetrically ramified secondary branches have been successfully obtained by reducing AgNO3 with L-ascorbic acid (AsA) in the mixed surfactant solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It was found that the architecture of silver nanocrystals was drastically influenced by the concentrations of ascorbic acid. At a given high concentration, a nonequilibrium system was easily built, which favored the formation of fractals. When the concentration was lowered, one-dimensional silver nanowires were successfully obtained. In addition, the presence of electrolyte (NaCl) plays an important role in the preparation of silver nanowires, influencing the silver crystallization process in surprising ways. Abstract:Silver nanowires have been successfully prepared by the paraphenylenediamine (PPD) of silver nitrate in acidic solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques have been employed to characterize silver nanowires. A mechanism is proposed to interpret the morphological control of these structures. It was found the pH value has a heavy influence on the shape of the silver structures. This wet chemical synthetic method is expected to be used for synthesizing some other functionalized silver nanomaterials.

Abstract:Single crystal silver dendrites have been synthesized by heterogeneous reduction of AgNO3 in toluene solutions of a triblock copolymer (EO)20–(PO)70–(EO)20. The triblock copolymer stabilized system exhibits high stability, which makes sample handling and analysis simple. By this method, the concentration of Ag in the colloidal system can be as high as 8.5g/L. TEM, XRD, IR, and UV–vis measurements are used to characterize the resulting hybrid systems.

Abstract:A polymer‐surfactant‐assisted sandwiched reduction route to silver nanowires is described based on the sandwich organometallic compound (η5‐C5H5)2Fe, in which there is obvious steric hindrance when the iron atoms reduce silver cations to elemental silver (see Figure), leading to a preferred direction. The formation of nanowires occurs in a layered solution with the assistance of poly(ethylene glycol).

Abstract:Stable aqueous dispersions of silver nanoparticles have been synthesized from an organometallic precursor dissolved in an organic phase. Hydrogen gas is used to reduce the precursor to form silver nanoparticles which spontaneously transfer into an immiscible aqueous phase where they are stabilized. This route provides a simple pathway for the preparation of aqueous nanoparticle solutions and avoids production of the inorganic ions that are usually associated with aqueous methods. The effectiveness of a variety of aqueous stabilizing agents is evaluated. All products show plasmon absorption bands characteristic of silver nanoparticles and transmission electron microscopy reveals most particles to be below 40 nm in diameter. Abstract:Uniform silver nanorods have been successfully synthesized through a nanowire-seeding, multisteps polyol process in the high concentration reaction system. In this developed three-step polyol process, ethylene glycol is used as the solvent and reductant while poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) is used as the capper agent. The silver nanowires are used as the seeds in step 3 to radial grow into nanorods with larger diameter but similar length. Desorption of PVP from the surface of silver is presumed as the critical factor to cause the dominant regrowth of wire-like seeds towards radial direction, rather than axial direction. More details of the radial growth mechanism have also been discussed. This synthesis strategy will be significant in the large scaled preparation of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Rapid synthesis of silver nanowires(Ag NWs) with high quality and a broad processing window is challenging because of the low selectivity of the formation of multiply twinned particles at the nucleation stage for subsequent Ag NWs growth.Herein we report a systematic study of the water-involved heterogeneous nucleation of Ag NWs with high rate(less than 20 min) in a simple and scalable preparation method.Using glycerol as a reducing agent and a solvent with a high boiling point,the reaction is rapidly heated to 210 ℃ in air to synthesize Ag NWs with a very high yield in gram level.It is noted that the addition of a small dose of water plays a key role for obtaining highly pure Ag NWs in high yield,and the optimal water/glycerol ratio is0.25%.After investigating a series of forming factors including reaction temperature and dose of catalysts,the formation kinetics and mechanism of the Ag NWs are proposed.Compared to other preparation methods,our strategy is simple and reproducible.These Ag NWs show a strong Raman enhancement effect for organic molecules on their surface.

Abstract:Crystalline silver nanowires, with diameters of 100–500 nm and lengths up to tens of micrometer, were synthesized via a reaction of Cu2O and AgNO3 in aqueous solution mixed with ethanol at room temperature. Cu2O was used as reducing agent. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The possible mechanism for the formation of silver nanowires is discussed.

Abstract:This article concerns the detailed investigations on the silver dendrite-assisted growth of single-crystalline silicon nanowires, and their possible self-assembling nanoelectrochemistry growth mechanism. The growth of silicon nanowires was carried out through an electroless metal deposition process in a conventional autoclave containing aqueous HF and AgNO3 solution near room temperature. In order to explore the mechanism and prove the centrality of silver dendrites in the growth of silicon nanowires, other etching solution systems with different metal species were also investigated in this work. The morphology of etched silicon substrates strongly depends upon the composition of the etching solution, especially the metal species. Our experimental results prove that the simultaneous formation of silver dendrites is a guarantee of the preservation of free-standing nanoscale electrolytic cells on the silicon substrate, and also assists in the final formation of silicon nanowire arrays on the substrate surface.

Abstract:High-yield silver/polymer/carbon nanocables were synthesized via a one-step simple hydrothermal route by using silver chloride and glucose as precursors. High-resolution TEM and element mapping proved that as-prepared nanocables consist of a silver nanowire core, a polymer inner shell, and a graphitic carbon outer shell. A three-step growth mechanism was proposed to explain the growth of such three-layer nanocables, i.e. the formation of silver nanowires, the glycosidation of glucose molecules on silver nanowire surface and the carbonization of the outmost glycosidation layer. We believe that reaction temperature plays the key role in the polymerization of glucose and sequent surface-carbonization.

Abstract:A novel, effective strategy named 'seed catalysis' has been described here to synthesize silver nanostructures with controllable morphology. Typically, we added Na2S into the reaction system and the Ag2S semiconductor colloids formed at the initial stage would act as both seeds and catalyst in the silver reduction. The morphology of products is controlled by the concentration of Na2S added to the system. Low concentration of Na2S gives nanocubes of 40-50 nm in size, while a high concentration of Na2S is of benefit to obtain nanowires. The growth of the silver crystal is also accelerated by the catalysis of Ag2S. Electron microscopy and UV-vis absorption spectra have been used to investigate the evolution of silver nanowires, and a reasonable mechanism to explain the role of Ag2S seeds has also been suggested. This semiconductor seed catalysis strategy will provide wide applications in the fabrication of metal nanomaterials.

The obtained Ag nanowires were uniform with diameter around 100nm and length up to 50μm. The formation mechanism of the Ag nanowires mediated by Fe and Sn ions was that the metal ions could prevent the oxide etching of seeds.

Abstract:Inactive gas (N2 or Ar) and oxygen scavenger (Fe2+ or Cu+) are used for the synthesis of silver nanowires (AgNWs) with thin diameter (< 30 nm) and high aspect ratio (> 1000), but the yield is always low. Due to the oxidative etching, oxygen largely influences silver nanostructures not only in the nucleation process but also in the growth period. Herein, we systematically studied AgNW synthesis under the condition of an atmosphere with different oxygen contents (O2, air, and N2). We separated the formation of Ag-twinned seeds and nanoparticles in the incubation and the elongation of AgNWs in the growth, which are both sensitive to the oxygen content. AgNWs with 28.5 nm diameter, 2500 aspect ratio, and 91% yield were obtained when the sample was protected in N2 (incubation) and refluxed with air (growth), resulting in a conductive film with a sheet resistance of 48 Ω/sq at a transmittance of 97.0%, comparable to that of ITO. The growth mechanism of such high-quality AgNWs was discussed.
