Abstract:Cometabolic bioventing for removal of TCE in unsaturated zone was studied in the soil column using methane as the cometabolic substrate, and TCE cometabolism in aquifer was studied by batch experiments. In batch experiments, when the initial mass of TCE was 0.2μL and 1.0μL, TCE removal efficiencies were 93.5% and 78.3% respectively with the presence of methane. During soil column experiments, a control soil column without CH4 injection and another column with CH4 injection were used, and the TCE concentrations in outlet gas and in soil vapor of both soil columns were measured. The total TCE remediation efficiency above 95% was obtained. Among the total removed TCE, about 15% and 10% of TCE were biodegraded with TCE existed in aqueous phase and in NAPL (non aqueous phase liquid) phase respectively. Since the high TCE concentration may be toxical to biomass, in the beginning stage of the experiment, part of the cometabolic biodegradation of TCE was restrained and in the later period of cometabolic bioventing, the cometabolic biodegradation of TCE was enhanced with higher efficiency. For methane-driven systems, Tc and Tr values range were 0.0058~0.012 and 0.0087~0.023 respectively. Results indicate that methane systems are easy to be applied to effective in situ TCE treatment in saturated and unsaturated zone.
