Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), as an intriguing class of soft active materials, exhibit excellent actuation performances and biocompatible properties, as well as a high degree of design flexibility, which have been of increasing interest in many disciplines. This review summarizes recent developments in this inspiring area, providing an overview of fabrication methods, design schemes, actuation mechanisms, and diverse applications of LCEs. Firstly, two-stage and one-pot synthesis methods, as well as emerging fabrication techniques (e.g., 3D/4D printing and top-down microfabrication techniques) are introduced. Secondly, the design and actuation mechanisms are discussed according to the different types of stimuli (e.g., heat, light, and electric/magnetic fields, among others). Thirdly, the representative applications are summarized, including soft robotics, temperature/strain sensors, biomedical devices, stretchable displays, and smart textiles. Finally, outlooks on the scientific challenges and open opportunities are provided.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are a unique class of materials that combine rubber elasticity with liquid crystalline anisotropy to produce exceptional physical and optical properties such as actuation, soft elasticity, and birefringence. This review gives a brief overview of the physics behind liquid crystals and classifications of LCEs before discussing the methods traditionally used to synthesize LCEs, the new methods of synthesis that have emerged within the past several years, and the developing applications of LCEs. The review begins by discussing the organization of liquid crystals in LCEs and how their coupling to the polymer backbone affects their macroscopic properties. Traditional LCE synthesis methods and their drawbacks in terms of moving towards applications are then touched upon, as well as emerging chemistries that eliminate many of the challenges associated with LCE synthesis. Thiol-Michael reactions and covalent adaptable networks, which allow for bulk sample synthesis and repeated programming, respectively, are discussed at length. Finally, applications of LCEs in 4D printing and as biomedical devices are illustrated.

Abstract:Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are lightly crosslinked polymers that combine liquid crystalline order and rubber elasticity. Owing to their unique anisotropic behavior and reversible shape responses to external stimulation (temperature, light, etc.), LCEs have emerged as preferred candidates for actuators, artificial muscles, sensors, smart robots, or other intelligent devices. Herein, we discuss the basic action, control mechanisms, phase transitions, and the structure–property correlation of LCEs; this review provides a comprehensive overview of LCEs for applications in actuators and other smart devices. Furthermore, the synthesis and processing of liquid crystal elastomer are briefly discussed, and the current challenges and future opportunities are prospected. With all recent progress pertaining to material design, sophisticated manipulation, and advanced applications presented, a vision for the application of LCEs in the next generation smart robots or automatic action systems is outlined.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are active soft matter-based materials with strong stimulus responsiveness and reversible, large-shape morphing capabilities. LCEs have demonstrated broad and growing applications in soft robotics, wearable devices, artificial muscles, and optical machines. The actuation intelligence and advanced functionality of LCEs depend on the smartness and properties of structures. In this review, we discuss recent advances in structure-induced intelligence of LCEs, specifically the integration of structural properties with the alignment and processing of LCEs. The structural design principles for three categories consisting of common structures (film, fiber, and tubule), smart structures (origami, kirigami, mechanical metamaterial, topology, and topography), and complex structures (monolithic and integrated) are presented. Various alignment controls of LCEs, including mechanical, surface, field-assisted, and shear alignment, are capable of inducing structural properties. The coupling and collaboration mechanisms of the LCE structures and the generated functions are discussed. The review concludes with perspectives on current challenges and emerging opportunities.

Abstract:Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are polymer networks exhibiting anisotropic liquid crystallinity while maintaining elastomeric properties. Owing to diverse polymeric forms and self-alignment molecular behaviors, LCEs have fascinated state-of-the-art efforts in various disciplines other than the traditional low-molar-mass display market. By patterning order to structures, LCEs demonstrate reversible high-speed and large-scale actuations in response to external stimuli, allowing for close integration with 4D printing and architectures of digital devices, which is scarcely observed in homogeneous soft polymer networks. In this review, we collect recent advances in 4D printing of LCEs, with emphases on synthesis and processing methods that enable microscopic changes in the molecular orientation and hence macroscopic changes in the properties of end-use objects. Promising potentials of printed complexes include fields of soft robotics, optics, and biomedical devices. Within this scope, we elucidate the relationships among external stimuli, tailorable morphologies in mesophases of liquid crystals, and programmable topological configurations of printed parts. Lastly, perspectives and potential challenges facing 4D printing of LCEs are discussed.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), a class of elastomers combining liquid crystals with a polymer network, have garnered significant interest for applications in the field of soft robotics. However, the fracture and fatigue characteristics of LCEs remain poorly understood. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the fracture and fatigue characteristics of LCEs, focusing on polydomain and monodomain variants subjected to different loading directions. The fracture energy (also called toughness) and fatigue threshold of polydomain and monodomain LCEs were quantitatively measured and compared with selected elastomers. Our experimental results demonstrate that polydomain LCEs exhibit superior fracture energy and fatigue threshold compared to monodomain LCEs. Within the monodomain category, LCEs subjected to parallel loading exhibit larger fracture energy than those under vertical loading, while their fatigue thresholds remain comparable. These findings enhance our understanding of the deformation and failure characteristics of LCEs, which are crucial for their applications in various fields.

The effects of structure elements on the phase transition behaviors and the optoelectronic properties are particularly discussed. These structure elements consist of non-chiral chain, core, connector and chiral chain. The research fields of the AFLC in the future are briefly described.

Abstract:Recently,progressively more fundamental and applied studies in liquid crystals have sought to apply this miraculous soft material to aspects other than the optics of planar displays.These up-and-coming non-display studies of liquid crystals range across the disciplines,from biology through to chemistry and physics,extending beyond even materiology and engineering.This summary primarily introduces the foundations,developments and potentials of several studies in non-display applications of liquid crystals in physics and related areas,including the progress on liquid crystal modulators in microwave and THz frequencies,developed recently by the Exeter research team.The aim is to provide a useful reference for scientists studying non-display aspects of liquid crystals.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) are such a kind of important materials that influence our life,which are not limited to displays such as televisions and personal computers.Combined with photoresponsive properties,LCs can also enable to develop a great variety of applications in various fields,including flat panel displays,photonics,photo-driven devices,and more recent nanotechnology.LCs demonstrate special characteristics of both mobility of an isotropic liquid and ordered regularity of a crystalline solid,thus termed as intermediate phase.The unique features of LCs provide liquid crystalline materials with interesting properties such as ability to self-assembly,fluidity with long-range order,molecular cooperation motion,birefringence and anisotropy in physical properties (optical,mechanical and electrical),molecular alignment at surfaces induced by external fields,deformation of LC elastomers responding to certain stimuli.Responsive deformation of LC polymers (LCPs) with different alignment of molecules is reviewed.Perspective and further applications in the future of LCPs in the field of micro fluid and micro robot are discussed.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are a class of electroactive polymers (EAPs) that have attracted significant attention in the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) community due to their unique combination of properties, including different actuation mechanisms, high generated strain (up to 400%), preprogrammed deformation, and biocompatibility. LCEs have the potential to revolutionize MEMS devices by enabling the development of miniaturized actuators, sensors, and other functional components with enhanced performance. This review provides a comprehensive overview of LCE-based devices for MEMS applications. It begins by exploring the fundamentals of LCEs, delving into their core component, liquid crystals (LCs). Subsequently, it examines the LCE preparation process, encompassing synthesis techniques, and alignment mechanisms. The review then delves into the state-of-the-art LCE-based devices used in MEMS, discussing their functionalities, characterization, and fabrication methods. A particular focus is placed on cutting-edge methods for integrating LCEs with MEMS using compatible fabrication techniques. Looking towards the future, the review introduces ionic liquid crystal elastomers (iLCEs) as a promising novel class of LCE-based materials with the potential to address limitations and enhance the performance of conventional LCEs in MEMS. Finally, a conclusion lays out future research orientations in iLCE-based MEMS technologies and the challenges that remain to be addressed in order to further expand their applications.

Abstract:There has been considerable effort to develop artificial actuator materials that can generate large mechanical deformation induced by external stimuli. Among these materials, liquid crystalline elastomers have unique proper-ties because of combining the rubber elasticity of the polymer network and the orientational ordering of liquid-crystalline moieties, and show reversible shape-recovery effects with shape memory induced by heat, light, electric field and so on. Here several kinds of stimuli -responsive deformation behavior of liquid-crystalline elastomers are reviewed. The progress on deformable liquid-crystalline elastomers in response to various external stimuli such as temperature, electric field, chemical stimulus, and light is mainly introduced. The mechanism of the deformation including thermal-induced, electric-field-induced and photoinduced phase transition is described, and the dominating influence factors of their responsive performance are discussed. The potential applications of liquid-crystalline elastomers are also prospected.

Abstract:Elastomers with supreme mechanical adaptability where the increasing stress under continuous deformation is significantly inhibited within a large deformation zone, are highly desired in many areas, such as artificial muscles, flexible and wearable electronics, and soft artificial-intelligence robots. Such system comprises the advantages of recoverable elasticity and internal compensation to external mechanical work. To obtain elastomer with supreme mechanical adaptability, a novel liquid crystal-based organosilicon elastomer (LCMQ) is developed in this work, which takes the advantages of reversible strain-induced phase transition of liquid crystal units in polymer matrix and the recoverable nano-sized fillers. The former is responsible for the inhibition of stress increasing during deformation, where the external work is mostly compensated by internal phase transition, and the latter provides tunable and sufficient high tensile strength. Such LCMQs were synthesized with 4-methoxyphenyl 4-(but-3-en-1-yloxy)benzoate (MBB) grafted thiol silicone oil (crosslinker-g-MBB) as crosslinking agent, vinyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane as base adhesive, and fumed silica as reinforcing filler by two-step thiol-ene “click” reaction. The obtained tensile strength and the elongation at break are better than previously reported values. Moreover, the resulting liquid crystal elastomers exhibit different mechanical behavior from conventional silicone rubbers. When the liquid crystal content increases from 1% (w/w) to 4% (w/w), the stress plateau for mechanical adaptability becomes clearer. Moreover, the liquid crystal elastomer has no obvious deformation from 25 °C to 120 °C and is expected to be used in industrial applications. It also provides a new template for the modification of organosilicon elastomers.

Abstract:Liquid-crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are a type of smart materials that can produce macroscopic reversible deformation under external stimuli (such as heat, light, electricity, magnetism, etc.). Only LCEs that are aligned can exhibit macroscopic reversible deformation. Dynamic covalent bonds can be reversibly broken and regenerated under certain conditions, which can change the topological structure of traditional covalent cross-linked networks. Introducing dynamic covalent bonds into LCEs enables a new strategy to align the material. Liquid-crystalline elastomer reversible three-dimensional structures have certain three-dimensional shapes and can produce reversible deformation under external stimuli, which can be used in biomedicine, tissue engineering, aerospace, and flexible robots. In order to obtain liquid-crystalline elastomer reversible three-dimensional structures with more complex shapes and multiple deformation modes, the liquid-crystalline elastomers can be three-dimensionally aligned or assembled based on the orientation method of dynamic covalent bonds. This article reviews the processing methods of the liquid-crystalline elastomer reversible three-dimensional structures based on dynamic covalent bonds, and analyzes the challenges and opportunities in this field.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomer is a type of soft material with unique physical and chemical properties that offer a variety of possibilities in the growing field of soft robot actuators. This type of material is able to exhibit large, revertible deformation under various external stimuli, including heat, electric or magnetic fields, light, etc., which may lead to a wide range of different applications such as bio-sensors, artificial muscles, optical devices, solar cell plants, etc. With these possibilities, it is important to establish modeling and control strategies for liquid crystal elastomer-based actuators, to obtain the accurate prediction and description of its physical dynamics. However, so far, existing studies on this type of the actuators mainly focus on material properties and fabrication, the state of art on the modeling and control of such actuators is still preliminary. To gain a better understanding on current studies of the topic from the control perspective, this review provides a brief collection on recent studies on the modeling and control of the liquid crystal elastomer-based soft robot actuator. The review will introduce the deformation mechanism of the actuator, as well as basic concepts. Existing studies on the modeling and control for the liquid crystal elastomer-based actuator will be organized and introduced to provide an overview in this field as well as future insights.

Abstract:Polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have kindled a spark of interest because of their unique characteristic of electrically controlled switching. However, some issues including high operating voltage, low contrast ratio and poor mechanical properties are hindering their practical applications. To overcome these drawbacks, some measures were taken such as molecular structure optimization of the monomers and liquid crystals, modification of PDLC and doping of nanoparticles and dyes. This review aims at detailing the recent advances in the process, preparations and applications of PDLCs over the past six years.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are polymeric materials that combine liquid crystal orientation and rubber elasticity. The mechanical responses of LCEs strongly depend on the nematic order and temperature. Developing a thermo-order-mechanical coupling model is important for the engineering applications of LCEs. In this work, we first synthesize both polydomain and monodomain LCEs. The shape change with temperature under a certain stress level is further characterized. In the theoretical part, the Landau-de Gennes model and neo-classical model is combined to construct the free energy density of LCEs. A linear term accounting for the effect of interior stress on nematic-isotropic transition is incorporated into the Landau-de Gennes free energy density, while a macro-order parameter is defined to describe the polydomain-monodomain transition for polydomain LCEs induced by the external force. Comparison between the model predictions and experimental results shows acceptably consistency for both polydomain and monodomain LCEs. Therefore, this work provides an efficient approach to predict the shape change of LCEs in various scenarios.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are renowned for their large, reversible, and anisotropic shape change in response to various external stimuli due to their lightly crosslinked polymer networks with an oriented mesogen direction, thus showing great potential for applications in robotics, bio‐medics, electronics, optics, and energy. To fully take advantage of the anisotropic stimuli‐responsive behaviors of LCEs, it is preferable to achieve a locally controlled mesogen alignment into monodomain orientations. In recent years, the application of four‐dimensional (4D) printing to LCEs opens new doors for simultaneously programming the mesogen alignment and the three‐dimensional geometry, offering more opportunities and higher feasibility for the fabrication of 4D‐printed LCE objects with desirable stimuli‐responsive properties. In this paper, the state‐of‐the‐art advances in 4D printing of LCEs are reviewed, with emphasis on both the mechanisms and potential applications. First, the fundamental properties of LCEs and the working principles of the representative 4D printing techniques are briefly introduced. Then, the fabrication of LCEs by 4D printing techniques and the advantages over conventional manufacturing methods are demonstrated. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and potential development trends towards the 4D printing of LCEs are discussed, which might shed light on future research directions in this new field.
