Abstract:Summary Discocriconemella sinensis n. sp. isolated in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, from the rhizosphere of Camellia sinenis is described. The new species was characterised morphologically and molecularly. Important morphological details were elucidated by SEM photographs. The new species is characterised by an uninterrupted rounded cephalic disc, en face showing a rectangular labial plate with slit-like oral apertures, labial plate surrounded by slightly elevated projections resembling rudimentary lobes, R = 66 (64-69), Rex = 21 (17-24), stylet 74 (67-81) μm long, excretory pore located at the base of the pharyngeal bulb, vulva open, tail short and conoid with a lobed terminus. The species belongs to the group 1 lip pattern. Morphologically, it is most similar to D. discolabia, D. mauritiensis, D. mineira and D. perseae. This is the first new Discocriconemella species described from China. Phylogenetic analyses based on analysis of the D2-D3 expansion segments of the 28S rRNA, ITS rRNA, partial 18S rRNA, and COI gene revealed that the new species formed a separate clade from other criconematid species, thereby supporting its status as a new species of the genus. The new species showed close relationships with Criconemoides informis.

Abstract:SummaryPopulations ofHemicriconemoides chitwoodi,H. fujianensis,H. parasinensis, andCriconemoides myungsugaeisolated in China from the rhizosphere soil of woody perennials were characterised molecularly, important morphological details being elucidated by SEM observations. The morphometric data of the Chinese populations were compared with all previously reported populations. The SEM observations ofen faceviews indicated thatH. chitwoodiandH. parasinensishave lip patterns belonging to type 1 and phylogenetically both species clustered with otherHemicriconemoidesspecies that showed the same kind of lip pattern. On the other hand,H. fujianensisshowed a lip pattern belonging to type 2 and phylogenetically appears basal to the above-mentioned clade. SEM observation ofC. myungsugaeshowed that the first lip annulus forms a non-projecting uninterrupted disc and the labial annulus is a rectangular shape with slight dorsal and ventral indentations. Phylogenetic relationships amongCriconemoidesspp. are apparently not well resolved. The present study provides updated morphological descriptions, molecular diagnostics and phylogenetic relationships ofH. chitwoodi,H. fujianensis,H. parasinensis, andC. myungsugae, the last species being the first report from China.
Two Novel Eupenicillium Species Isolated from Soil in China

Abstract:Two novel species of Eupenicillium isolated from the soil collected in China are described and illustrated. Eupenicillium polygoniforme is characterized by the lenticular ascospores with polygon edge of equatorial ridges, the convex surface of the ascospores resembling with reticulate anastomosed ribs and striking spinulose. E. zhejiangensis is characterized by the lenticular ascospores with distinct deeply equatorial ridges and anastomosed squamiform ornamentation of the convex surface. The phylogenetic relationship between the two new species and other species in Eupenicillium genus was investigated base on LSU-ITS combined sequences.

Abstract:Elsholtzia zhongyangii (Lamiaceae), a new species from Sichuan Province, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to E. feddei f. feddei, but it can be easily distinguished from E. feddei f. feddei by smaller corolla (3.2–3.5 mm vs. 4.5–5.3 mm), bract indumentum (glabrous, except margin ciliate vs. villous, especially on veins abaxially, glabrous adaxially) and bract stalked (ca. 1.2 mm vs. sessile). Phylogenetic analyses, based on two nuclear ribosomal (ETS, ITS) and five plastid (rbcL, matK, trnL-F, ycf1, ycf1-rps15) regions, confirmed that the new species formed a monophyletic clade with robust support. The new species is currently known from western Sichuan.

Abstract:During investigations into fungal diversity in the Tibetan Plateau, two Helvella collections were made. Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS and LSU sequence data revealed one collection represents a distinct new species that is introduced as Helvella cystidiata. Helvella cystidiata is characterized by having loosely saddle-shaped pileus, greyish to grey brown hymenium, lacunose stipe and inflated ectal excipulum cells. Furthermore, a known species Helvella lacunosa is reported in Tibetan Plateau. Detailed descriptions, illustrations and a phylogenetic tree to show the placement of two taxa are provided.

Abstract:During a recent survey of fungi colonizing juveniles of the soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines , a fungus producing spiny chlamydospores and monosporous sporangia was isolated. Based on morphology and sequences of the rDNA ITS region and 18S and 28S genes, the fungus greatly resembles some species of Mortierella . Although the new isolate’s spiny chlamydospores and delicate arachnoid-like mycelium are very similar to those of Mortierella , it differs significantly from Mortierella in its overall colony appearance and odour, unispored sporangium with a small columella, chlamydospores born laterally on short hyphae, and especially in its phylogenetic position. A new genus and new species, Echinochlamydosporium variabile , in Mortierellaceae (Mortierellales, Zygomycota) are proposed. A key to the genera of Mortierellaceae is provided.

Abstract:Two new Entoloma species, E. mastoideum and E. praegracile from China, are described, illustrated, and compared with similar taxa. Entoloma mastoideum is characterized by its flesh-colored or pinkish pileus with a distinctive conic to umbonate papilla, 6-8-angled spores, (1-)2-spored basidia, cylindrical to clavate and hyaline cheilocystidia. Entoloma praegracile is distinctive because of its small and pale orange basidiomata, translucently striate pileus, slender and brittle stipe, (1-)2-3-spored and short and stout basidia, and absence of cheilocystidia.
The Identification of Barnyardgrass Leaf Spot Caused by Exserohilum Monoceras

Abstract:Three fungal isolates, KF-1, HN-14 and K-12, from barnyardgrass leaf blight, which were collected from Hunan and Beijing, were studied morphologically and molecularly. The results showed that there were differences between the three isolates and the two Exserohilum monoceras strains G-9 and X-27 which wereaccurately identified and deposited in culture collections of China Agricultural University in colonial morphology, sporulation and spore morphology especially septa of spore. G-9, KF-1, X-27 and HN-14 grow quickly and produce abundant spores on PDA plate, but K-12 grows slowly and produced less spores. To further identify the relationship of 5 isolates, 5.8S-ITS sequence were compared. Results indicated that the similarity of ITS sequence of five isolates were over 98% and the phylogenetic tree based on ITS1 and ITS2 sequence also revealed that G-9, KF-1, K-12, X-27, and HN-14 were all clustered into one group and distinct from the other outgroup and suboutgroup. Based on the above data, these three isolates were proved to be E. monoceras.

Abstract:Strobilomyces echinocephalus Gelardi & Vizzini sp. nov. is described as a new species, based on collections from Kunming (Yunnan Province, China). Macro-morphological and micro-morphological features, ecological data and analyses of RPB1 and ITS2 sequences support the establishment of this new taxon. Colour pictures of fresh basidiomata in habitat, scanning electron microscope (SEM) micro-photographs of the spores, and a line-drawing displaying the most relevant anatomical characters are provided in this paper. Strobilomyces zangii Gelardi nom. nov. is proposed to replace the name Heimiella nigricans M. Zang. A dichotomous key to the Strobilomyces species at global level is also provided at the end of this work.

Abstract:The diversity of lignicolous freshwater fungi of China is currently being studied. In this paper, we report on nine collections of asexual morphs of Helminthosporium from submerged wood in rivers and streams in west to north-west Yunnan Province, China. The taxa are characterized based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses of ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF1α sequence data. A new species, Helminthosporium submersum , is described and illustrated with notes on taxonomy and phylogeny. Molecular data for Helminthosporium aquaticum and H. velutinum are provided .

Abstract:Helminthosporium is a polyphyletic genus in Massarinaceae (Pleosporales). Species of Helminthosporium are characterized by having septate and erect conidiophores, acro-pleurogenous and distoseptate conidia with a ring-shaped scar at the base. During a survey of fungal diversity in Sichuan Province, China, six Helminthosporium-like isolates were collected from dead branches of unknown trees. Five barcodes, including ITS (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2), SSU, LSU, TEF1, and RPB2 were amplified and sequenced. Morphological examination and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses revealed two new Helminthosporium species (H. chengduense sp. nov., and H. chinense sp. nov.), a new genus (Synhelminthosporium gen. nov.) with a type species Synhelminthosporium synnematoferum sp. nov., and two known species (Helminthosporium submersum and H. velutinum) within Massarinaceae. The new genus Synhelminthosporium differs from the phylogenetically closest genus Helminthosporium by producing synnematous conidiophores. This work expands our understanding of the diversity of Helminthosporium-like taxa in Sichuan Province, China.

Abstract:Alloexidiopsis sinensis sp. nov. found in Yunnan Province, China, is described here as a new species based on its morphology and phylogeny. Alloexidiopsis sinensis is characterized by its membranaceous basidiomata with a grandinoid hymenophore and a monomitic hyphal system bearing generative hyphae with clamp connections and allantoid basidiospores measuring 14.5–23 × 4.5–6.5 μm. Phylogenetic analyses of the new species were based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (nLSU) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the new species belonged to the genus Alloexidiopsis, and was retrieved as a sister to A. nivea.

Abstract:A new corticioid fungus from Guizhou Province in southwest China, Asterostroma rhizomorpharum, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular evidence. It is characterized by producing annual, resupinate basidiomata with long rhizomorphs, a dimitic hyphal structure with simple septa on generative hyphae, asterosetae frequently present in subiculum, asterohyphidia present in hymenium, ellipsoid to subglobose, and echinulate and amyloid basidiospores (5.5–6.8 × 4.6–5.9 μm). The phylogenetic analysis based on ITS+nLSU rDNA sequences shows that the new species belongs to the section Asterostroma.

Abstract:The genus Gongronella is important in agriculture and industry by secreting various natural bioactive metabolites such as chitosanases and organic acids. During the most recent 8 years, a total of 14 new species have been described, remarkably enriching the diversity of this genus. In this study, we added three more new species to this valuable genus, based on a combination of morphological traits and phylogenetic information. Six strains of the genus Gongronella were isolated from soil collected in Hainan Province, China. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS and LSU rDNA sequences grouped these strains into three independent clades. According to their unique morphological characteristics, they were classified as G. multiramosa sp. nov., G. qichaensis sp. nov. and G. oleae sp. nov. The G. multiramosa was characterized by multiple branched sporangiophores and was closely related to G. pedratalhadensis. The G. qichaensis was characterized by obscure collars and closely related to G. butleri, G. hydei and G. banzhaoae. The G. oleae was characterized by the presence of oil droplets in the sporangiospores and was closely related to G. chlamydospora and G. multispora. Their descriptions and illustrations were provided, and their differences from morphological allies and phylogenetic-related species are discussed.

Abstract:Fusarium xiangyunensis sp. nov., isolated from hot-spring waterlogged soil in China, which is an endoparasitic fungus of nematodes, is described and illustrated. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphology and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, EF-1α and RPB1 sequence data. Phylogenetic analyses showed that F. xiangyunensis clustered with those species belonging to the F. solani species complex and grouped together with F. witzenhausenense. This species differs from F. witzenhausenense in habitat (parasitic on Hibiscus sp.), conidia and chlamydospores. Furthermore, the nematicidal activity of its microconidia was determined and causes infection and death of nematodes in both sterile water and solid medium.

Abstract:A new species of Ulocladium was discovered from diseased leaves of Lycopersicon esculentum and Duchesnea indica from Hunan Province of China. Morphologically, this species is very close to U. consortiale , U. cucurbitae , and U. subcucurbitae in producing narrow ellipsoid conidia at 1 – 3 days, but the conidial size range of this species at this stage could distinguish it from three well-known species. It also exhibits the multiplex conidium morphology at the different growth-stages (1–3 days and 4–7 days). The results of maximum parsimony (MP) and neighbor-joining (NJ) phylogenetic analyses of combined glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase ( gpd ) gene and Alternaria alternata major allergen (Alt a 1) genes show that U. solani and U. subcucurbitae cluster in a unique and separate subclade with no clear affinities to a specific sistergroup, and demonstrate that the Ulocladium species group is monphyletic, but two clades of this section are recognized. Morphological features of this new species, the sequences of the Alt a 1 and gpd gene regions, and its comparison with related species in this genus are discussed.

The new species, C. vaginatus, can be distinguished from other chanterelles by the combination of a dark-colored flocculososquamulose pileus, a rugulose hymenophore, and thick-walled hyphae in the pileipellis. Cantharellus appalachiensis, a species originally described from southeastern North America, is newly reported from China.
