Abstract:The field trial of plastic film mulching on dryland spring wheat was conducted in the semiarid region of Loess Plateau. The results showed that:the soil temperature during the early growth period of spring wheat was raised markedly under plastic film mulching conditions, which avoided the injury on spring wheat by spring low temperature and increased the number of effective tillers, fertile spiklets and kernels per ear significantly, thus raised the grain yield of spring wheat. The best period in plastic film mulching was during 1-30 days after sowing of dryland spring wheat in the semiarid region of Loess Plateau. When the time of mulching was longer, the temperatureincreased effect decreased, and the yield had a tendency to decling.

Abstract:This paper explores the possibility of improving yields of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) by using plastic film mulching. Field experiments compared three mulching treatments viz. for 20d (M1), 40d (M2), and 60d (M3) after sowing (DAS), with a non-mulch control (CK). Mulching increased temperature and moisture in the upper 5cm of soil, and shoots emerged 8d earlier than in CK. Mulching also increased number of tillers, length of the growing period, spikelet and grain numbers per spike, and the duration from flowering to harvest. In the mulched treatments, photosynthesis rate and soluble sugar content were higher in the vegetative period, but soluble sugar content was lower in the grain filling period relative to CK. Grain yield following 20d mulching was greatest (8207kgha−1), and decreased gradually as the mulching period increased (7847 and 6702kgha−1 for M2 and M3, respectively). Plastic film removed after 20d maximizes yield and minimizes soil pollution.
Effect of Straw Mulching on Grain Filling Dynamics of Winter Wheat and Yield in Dryland

Abstract:A field experiment including straw mulching in different amounts was set in Weibei Loess Plateau of Shaanxi Province to make clear the effect of straw mulching on grain filling and yield of winter wheat from Sept.2007 to Jun.2008.The quantity of straw mulching had four levels of 9 000 kg/hm2 mulching(SM9),6 000 kg/hm2 mulching(SM6),3 000 kg/hm2 mulching(SM3)and non-mulching(CK). The results indicated that in the slightly increasing stage,the grain filling rate of four treatments decreased gradually in the following order: CK,SM3,SM6 and SM9;However,in the fast and the slowly increasing stage,the grain filling rate of control was different with the slightly increasing stage.The grain filling rate can be arranged in the following order as SM3SM6CKSM9.The grain filling duration of SM9 was longer than contrast's 6d,SM6 and SM3's grain filling duration were almost the same as control's.During the fast and the slowly increasing stage,the contribution rate of SM9,SM6 and SM3 were all larger than control's,while in contrary for the slightly increasing stage.Compared with control,the amounts of 3 000 kg/hm2 could increase winter wheat yields after one year coverage.The SM3 treatment increased significantly 5.9% than control's.According to the research,SM3's production increase was mainly due to the grain filling rate was higher than control's in the fast and the slowly increasing stage.
Effects of Plastic Film Mulching on Soil Temperature and Moisture and on Yield Formation of Spring Wheat

Abstract:Field experiments were carried out to study the effects of plastic film mulching on soil temperature and moisture, and on yield formation of spring wheat. The results showed that plastic film mulching could increase soil temperature with "U" variances in the whole growth period of spring wheat. Plastic film mulching could also increase soil available water by restraining evaporation and elevating deep water to the layer useable for roots. The promotion of soil temperature and soil water content under plastic film mulching was favorable to the development and water use of spring wheat in its earlier stage. Root developments were restrained when mulching in later stage of spring wheat, with decreases in crop water consumption and water use efficiency, and there was no significant effects on yield formation. The spring wheat yields under control (CK), pre-sowing irrigation (W), mulching for whole stage (M), pre-sowing irrigation adding mulching for 30 days (WM30), pre-sowing irrigation adding mulching for 60 days (WM60), and pre-sowing irrigation adding mulching for whole stage (WMw) were 2 554, 2,424, 2,750, 3,138, 3,305, and 3,123 kg.hm-2, respectively, and the optimum mulching time was at 40-60 days.
[Effect of Plastic Film Mulching on Crop Yield and Nitrogen Efficiency in Semiarid Areas].

Abstract:The effect of plastic film mulching, water storage in soil profile before sowing, and nitrogen fertilization on crop yield and nitrogen efficiency was examined in this paper. The study site was on the cultivated lossial soil in semiarid areas with 415 mm of annual rainfall and the test crop was spring wheat, Triticum aestivum. In order to study the effect of plastic film mulching, 4 levels of mulching were designed, including mulching of 0, 30 and 60 days after sowing and mulching over the whole growing period. The results showed that increase of soil water storage, plastic film mulching and nitrogen fertilization increased crop yield significantly(alpha < 0.01), and their effect followed in the order of nitrogen fertilization > increase of water storage > plastic film mulching. The effect of mulching on crop yield varied with water storage, nitrogen fertilization and mulching periods. When the water storage was low, there was no significant difference in crop yield between mulching and no mulching, although mulching increased crop yield slightly, and the nitrogen efficiency was higher for no mulching and mulching 30 days. When the water storage was high, the difference between the yield of mulching 60 days and no mulching was significant, but no difference in nitrogen efficiency was found for mulching 30 days, 60 days and over whole growing period. It was suggested that mulching over whole growing period was of less significance in practice.

Abstract:To improve crop yield in semiarid areas, it is valuable to combine irrigation of harvested rainwater with plastic film mulching technology. Limited irrigation after mulching is not usually practiced. This research was to study the combination of pre-sowing irrigation and film mulch and its effect on spring wheat grain yield in semiarid Loess Plateau in China. Four treatments were employed: (1) C—control, without pre-sowing irrigation and without mulching; (2) I—pre-sowing irrigation of 30 mm without mulching; (3) M—plastic film mulching without pre-sowing irrigation; and (4) IM—30 mm pre-sowing irrigation plus mulching. Plastic films in mulched plots were removed at 60 days after sowing (DAS). Although soil water evaporation in the mulched treatments is reduced by film mulch, soil water content in the mulched treatments was lower than in the non-mulched treatments by 60 DAS. Pre-sowing irrigation increased evapotranspiration, but the percentage of water supply from the soil profile in the overall evapotranspiration is just within the range from 7.1 to 33.5%. Rainfall and irrigation during the growing period provide most of the water for evapotranspiration, especially in very dry years. The grain yield was 29.4% greater in treatment IM in 1999 and 112.4% greater in 2000 compared with control, and 35.7% greater in 1999 and 47.3% greater in 2000 compared with the treatment M. Correlation analysis revealed that the spikelet number and the fertile spikelet number were the key factors determining grain yield formation, at least in these two years. The greatest water-use efficiency (WUE) was found in treatment IM for both years, and was significantly higher than in other treatments. The WUE was higher in the wet year of 1999 than in the dry year of 2000. The combination of pre-sowing irrigation with film mulching increased the soil temperature in the seedling stage, reduced the water deficit, and achieved the highest shoot biomass, grain yield, and water-use efficiency of the 2 years. It is, therefore, concluded that the combination of pre-sowing irrigation with plastic film mulching works well in increasing plant growth and yield of spring wheat and can be adopted for spring wheat production in the semiarid areas.
Effect of Plastic Film Mulching on Soil Microbial Biomass in Spring Wheat Field in Semi-Arid Loess Area

Abstract:This paper studied the effect of different periods of plastic film mulching (M0-no mulching, M30-mulching for 30 days, M60-mulching for 60 days, and M-mulching for whole growth period) on soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) of spring wheat field in semi-arid loess plateau. The mean SMBC in 1999 and 2000 was 335.3 and 259.3 mg.kg-1 dry soil, respectively. It was 29.3% higher in 1999 than in 2000. The highest SMBC was recorded at the harvest stage in M treatment for the two years. In 1999, a wet year with more rainfall, the SMBC of M60 and M treatments was significantly higher than those of M0 and M30 in the mid-period of growth, reached its top at the end of the growth period. The highest grain yield was also achieved in M60. It was a dry year in 2000, but rainfall was rich in the latter growth period of spring wheat. SMBC increased at the beginning period of growth, and did not increase during the mid-growth period. It increased again during the latter period of growth, and showed a significant difference among the treatments. At the harvest stage of 2000, SMBC in M0 was the highest among all the treatments. It was similar between M and M60, and lower than that of M30. In the two years, the ratio of C/N ranged between 7.732-9.042, being lower than the threshold of 11.3, and the ratio of C/P was 300.8-719.6, being higher than the threshold of 300. The two parameters showed that the increase of SMBC was inhibited because of the competition of soil available nutrients between soil microbes and crops. These indicated that soil organic matter content was so shortage that it became the key factor to restrict crop productivity. Under this condition, increasing crop productivity through the input of chemical fertilizers would conceal the problem of soil degradation, and result in a further decrease of soil quality. A long term plastic film mulching would make the problem more serious.

Abstract:Field experiments were carried out to study effects of plastic film mulching and pre-sowing irrigation on yield formation and water use of spring wheat. Soil temperature declined after pre-sowing irrigation, which is unfavorable for the seedlings growth. The promotion of soil temperature and soil water content under plastic film mulch is favorable for the development and water use of spring wheat in earlier stage, while harmful to harvest index and yield formation in later period. No significant difference in grain yield were showed among treatments of control without irrigation mulching (CK), pre-sowing irrigation (W) and mulching for 60 days (M), while combing pre-sowing irrigation with mulching for 60 d could increase the yield and water use efficiency of spring wheat significantly.

Abstract:<p>Plastic film mulching has been extensively used for spring maize (<em>Zea mays</em> L.) production in the Hetao Irrigation District (HID). Determining whether transparent plastic film mulching results in premature senescence and yield reduction of spring maize still needs to be verified. A two-year field experiment was conducted in the HID that involved planting spring maize under three mulching practices on a flat plot 1) without mulching (control treatment, CK), 2) with black plastic film mulching (BM), 3) with transparent plastic film mulching (TM). The results indicated that TM and BM were superior to CK in terms of effects on soil hydrothermal conditions. Compared with BM, TM produced significantly higher soil temperature at V6, and had no significant temperature effect at V12, R1, R3, and R6. Both TM and BM promoted early seedling emergence and earlier silking, and TM extended the duration of the reproductive stages by 1–2 days compared with BM, and 4–5 days longer than CK. TM and BM produced greater kernel weights and kernel volumes in the superior and middle portions of the ear than CK. TM produced significantly greater total kernel weights per ear than BM at and after 23 days after silking. TM significantly increased grain-filling rate and length of the active grain-filling period compared with BM and CK. Additionally, TM and BM produced significantly higher photosynthetic parameters than CK at the grain-filling stage in the two study years. The net photosynthesis rate for TM was significantly greater than for BM. TM and BM significantly increased grain yields by 28.1% and 15.1%, respectively, in 2019 over CK, and by 24.6% and 21.1% in 2020. Transparent plastic film mulching could serve as a promising adaptive management practice to increase resource use efficiency and to improve maize productivity in the HID.</p>

Abstract:Plastic film mulching is an important agricultural practice in semiarid areas of the Loess Plateau in northwest China to improve crop productivity by changing soil properties. We conducted field experiments using spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Longchun 8139-2) to examine the effect of film-mulching with varying durations on crop yield and soil properties in 1999 and 2000 on Loess Orthic Entisols in the semiarid Loess Plateau of China. The three mulching treatments with varying durations were applied: (1) M30: mulching for 30 days after sowing (DAS); (2) M60: mulching for 60DAS; (3) Mw: mulching for the whole growth period, as well as the control; M0: without mulching. In 1999, seedlings from the three mulching treatments emerged 8 days earlier than those from unmulchingly treated. In 2000, a very dry year, emergence of seedlings in the mulching treatments occurred only 1–2 days earlier compared to control. Moreover, mulching treatments also significantly increased the total root biomass before 90DAS in 1999 and before 30DAS in 2000. There was a sharp increase in soil respiration in the mulching treatments. Soil microbial biomass nitrogen content in the Mw treatment was significantly lower at 43DAS than that in control. Accumulation of total mineral nitrogen in the soil at harvest was clearly higher in Mw than in the other treatments and the control. Highest yields were recorded from wheat treated with M60 (3305 and 1203kgha−1 in 1999 and 2000, respectively). By contrast, no significant difference in yield was found among the three-mulched treatments in 1999. In 1999 the water use efficiency in all mulching treatments was significantly higher than in control, while in 2000 it was significantly higher in M60 and Mw than in M30 and control. These findings therefore suggest that mulching for 60DAS increased grain yield by increasing the mineral nitrogen, soil water and the efficiency of water use and avoiding the over-decomposition of organic matter and over-mineralization of organic nitrogen.

Abstract:Plastic film mulch in agricultural production becomes essential to maintaining crop yields in arid and semiarid areas.However,the presence of residual film in farmland soil has also drawn much attention.In this study,three experiments were conducted.The first two experimental designs included 0,450,1 350,and 2 700 kg ha-1 of residual film pieces of approximately 5 cm side length added to field soil(0-20 cm soil depth)for seven years and added to pots for four years.In the third experiment,1 350 kg ha-1 of the residual film with different side lengths(2-5,5-10,10-15,and 15-20 cm)was added to field soil for six years to explore the effect of residual film fragment size on soil nutrients,soil microorganisms,crop growth and yields.The residual film had little effect on the soil moisture at a field depth of 0-2(or 0-1.8)m.There were no significant effects on organic carbon,total nitrogen,inorganic nitrogen,total phosphorus or available phosphorus in the 0-20 cm soil layer.The presence of residual film decreased the richness and diversity of the bacterial community of the surface soil of the residual film,but it had no significant effect on the microbial community of the non-surface soil.The emergence rates of wheat and lentils occasionally decreased significantly with different amounts of residue fragments added to the field.At 450-2 700 kg ha-1,the residual film reduced the plant height and stem diameter of maize and significantly reduced the shoot biomass of harvested maize by 11-19%.The average yields of maize and potato over the seven years decreased,but there were almost no significant statistical differences among the treatments.These results provide important data for a comprehensive scientific understanding of the effects of residual film on soil and crops in dryland farming systems.
Effects of soil‐plastic mulching on water consumption characteristics and grain yield of spring wheat in a semi‐arid area

Abstract:Regulating the water consumption characteristics of crops is an important way to achieve efficient water use and develop water‐saving agriculture in semi‐arid rainfed areas. Using spring wheat cv. Longchun 27 as test material, a field experiment involved two treatments: (i) whole‐field soil plastic mulching and bunch seeding (PM); (ii) uncovered and bunch seeding (CK). The results showed that soil water storage in the 0–300 cm profile for PM was higher than that of CK. Before the jointing stage, the periodic water consumption, water consumption modulus coefficient and water consumption intensity of PM were lower than CK by 10.7–36.2 mm, 19.8–52.4% and 9.1–52.7%; However, from jointing to heading, they were correspondingly higher by 15.8–21.8 mm, 19.5–34.1% and 18.2–32.9% (P < 0.05). The above‐ground biomass, crop growth rate and water consumption efficiency of PM were significantly higher than that of CK. Based on the significantly increased spike length, grain number per spike and 1000‐grain weight, PM increased grain yield by 8.9–22.8%, and WP by 9.9–25.2% without significant change of evapotranspiration, as compared with CK. Consequently, PM regulated the water consumption characteristics of spring wheat, resulting in significantly increased water productivity and grain yield. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Effect of Mulching Plant Fiber Film on Soil Moisture and Temperature Properties and Crop Yield

Abstract:It is very important to seek some substitutes for plastic film because continuous plastic film mulching cultivation often causes serious soil and environmental contamination.A plant fiber film mulching experiment was carried out to evaluate its applied effect in this study.The results showed that soil temperature and soil moisture significantly increased under the fiber film mulching in seedling stage,which is beneficial to improve rate of seedling,accelerate growth,and improve yield and water use efficiency as well.Compared to open cultivation,soil temperature and soil moisture under mulching plant fiber film in different corn growth stages were increased by 0.5℃～1.7℃ and 1.4%～6.1%,respectively,as well as 10.8% of yield.The tensile strength loss ratio of plant fiber film reached over 90% and there was basically no residues on the field in mulching 120 d,which suggests that the plant fiber film could be fully degraded within the plant growing stage.

Abstract:Plastic film mulching (PFM) has been extensively used for crop production since the 1990s in the semi-arid Loess Plateau, Northwest China. The availability of soil inorganic P under PFM is poorly understood and hard to be predicted in this area. This paper determined the effects of PFM on P availability, soil P budget and topsoil P balance, and inorganic P fraction transformation on a calcareous soil with plastic-film-mulched spring wheat. This study was conducted in Zhonglianchuan, Yuzhong County, Gansu Province over two growing seasons in 2009 and 2010. There were two treatments of spring wheat either mulched with plastic film (M) or non-mulched/bare (B). Individual plots, 10 m long x 6 m wide, were replicated three times in a randomized complete block design. Compared to the B treatment, grain yield in the M treatment increased by 94.5% and 73.4% in 2009 and 2010, respectively: and straw biomass increased by 62.6% and 53.6%. P mass in aboveground spring wheat in the M treatment was significantly higher (P <= 0.05) than in the B treatment in both years. Moreover, P mass was significantly higher (P <= 0.05) in 2010 than the corresponding treatments in 2009. As a result, P remaining in the M treatment was significantly lower (P <= 0.05) than in the B treatment in both years. In the 2009 growing season with less rainfall, the balance of available P was positive, but negative in 2010 with more rainfall. This can be explained on the basis that high crop biomass requires more soil available Pin wet years than in dry years, which may decrease actual soil available P content in the wheat-growing period. In this trial, inorganic P fraction contents increased in both treatments after two consecutive growing seasons, but decreased for O-P (occluded Fe/Al bound P). In the M treatment, a significant positive correlation existed between Olsen-P and Ca-2-P (dicalcium bound P). Al-P (aluminum bound P), Fe-P (iron bound P), Ca-10-P (phosphorite bound P) in 2009, and Ca-2-P in 2010, but no significant correlation occurred in the B treatment. Therefore, we suggest that PFM is beneficial for reducing P remaining in soil and promoting inorganic P fraction availability to crops in semi-arid areas. Future research should focus on the mechanism for the effect of PFM with other crops on soil P availability and inorganic P fractions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Abstract Crop yields are seriously threatened in saline–alkali areas with shallow groundwater levels and high evaporation. Mulching can effectively alleviate salt stress on crops in drylands, but there is limited research on winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) mulching in coastal saline–alkali areas. To investigate the effect of plastic film mulching on the growth and yield of wheat in coastal saline–alkali soil, three field management measures were designed: bare ground (CK), plastic film mulch (PM), and sub‐soil plastic film mulch (PMF). Compared with CK, PM and PMF significantly increased wheat grain yield by 128.2%–313.2% and 187.8%–537.0%, respectively, over the two study stages. The movement of salt to the surface is inhibited after mulching; as a result, PMF and PM significantly decreased the electric conductivity in shallow soil (0–20 cm) by 31.1% and 23.8%, on average, compared to CK, resulting in a significant increase in dry matter accumulation (DM) for winter wheat throughout the growing season. Moreover, PMF increased the overall DM by increasing the dry matter accumulation per plant (DMP), while PM achieved a similar effect to PMF by increasing the number of tillers. Compared with PM, PMF had a better inhibitory effect on shallow soil salinity, significantly increasing the effective number of spikes, effective tillering rate, DMP, and spike weight at harvest; promoting vegetative and reproductive growth of wheat fields; and ultimately increasing yield. PMF can be used to improve winter wheat production in coastal saline–alkali soils.

Abstract:A field experiment was carried out on cultivated loessial soil in semiarid area with 415 mm precipitation and spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) was used as an indicating crop to study the effects of plastic film mulching period(including no mulching,mulching for 30 days,mulching for 60 days,after sowing and mulching for whole growing period), soil water storage amount in profile before sowing (including low and high treatments) and nitrogen fertilizer application (including no nitrogen application and nitrogen application 75 kg/hm 2) on the spring wheat growth.After being covered with plastic film,the root of crop grew quickly,and the ratio of the root that distributed in middle and low soil layer increased,it was useful to absorb the water in deep soil.The flourishing root assured the balance between the absorb organ and the dehydrate organ of crop,coordinated the relation of dry matter distribution between the root and the shoot ,and with the premise of not affecting the absorption ability of root,it could also enhance the ratio of the breed distribution of the photosynthate.The results showed that uncovering the plastic film at right moment could improve the distribution of photosynthate,stimulate the root to plunge into the deep soil and keep the activation during later growth period.The root biomass of the top layer and the middle layer (30-60 cm) in the treatment of the plastic film mulching for the whole growth period was lower than other treatments apparently,the reason was that plastic film mulching during later growth period made soil temperature rise rapidly and led to large numbers of root mortality,and root activity decreased.As a result,uncovering plastic film in time could ensure that the ratio between the root and the shoot keeps at high level during later growth period,and plastic film mulching for the whole growth period was unfavorable to keep the ratio between the root and the shoot at high level during later growth period.
Continuous Plastic-Film Mulching Increases Soil Aggregation but Decreases Soil Ph in Semiarid Areas of China

Abstract:Plastic-film mulch is a globally applied agricultural practice. However, its effects on soil aggregation and pH have been hardly studied. We assessed the effects of plastic-film mulch on soil aggregate water stability and pH in fields used for maize (Zea mays L.) production, at two sites in a cold semiarid environment, China. Four treatments were used: (i) no plastic-film mulch and no straw incorporation, (ii) plastic-film mulch only, (iii) straw incorporation only, and (iv) straw incorporation plus mulch. Seven years after continuous treatment application, the use of plastic-film mulch increased the proportion of water-stable macroaggregates (>0.25 mm) in the top 15-cm soil layer by 16-28%, across sampling times and sites. Straw incorporation similarly increased the proportion of water-stable macroaggregates. However, the effects of mulch, on increasing the mean weight diameter of aggregates were greater in non-straw-incorporated soils than in straw-incorporated soils, and vice versa. Soil bulk density in the top 15-cm soil layer marginally increased in the mulched treatments, relative to the non-mulched treatments, while it decreased in straw-incorporated treatments. In addition, there was a decrease in soil pH, by 0.19-0.54 units, in the mulched, relative to the non-mulched soils. Combining our previous results, we suggested that increases in maize root growth and microbial activity were linked to the increased soil aggregation while accumulation in soil nitrate resulting from the stimulated soil nitrogen mineralization was responsible for the marginally decreased soil pH in the plastic-film mulched relative to the non mulched soils, due to increased soil hydrothermal conditions. Residual plastic film decreases crop yield and water use efficiency through direct negative effects on soil physicochemical properties and root growth

Abstract:Film mulching has been extensively used to improve agricultural production in arid regions of China. However, without sufficient mulch film recovery, large amounts of residual film accumulated in the farmland, which would affect crop yield and water use efficiency (WUE). In order to comprehensively analyze the effects of residual film on crop yield and WUE, and clarify its influencing mechanism, present study adopted a meta-analysis to systematically evaluate the impacts of residual film on soil physicochemical properties, crop root growth, yield, and WUE. The results showed that residual film significantly increased soil bulk density and the soil moisture content in 0-20 cm soil layer, but decreased soil porosity, soil organic matter, soil total nitrogen content, and soil moisture content in >20 cm soil layer, especially when residual film amount was >400 kg ha-1. Residual film significantly reduced crop root dry weight, root length, root diameter, root volume and root surface area. Generally, crop yield and WUE decreased with the increase of residual film amount; and crop yield was reduced by about 14.00 % when the residual film amount increased by 1000 kg ha-1. In average, crop yield and WUE under film residual condition were significantly decreased by 13.46 % and 9.21 %, respectively. The negative effects of residual film on root growth, yield and WUE were greater for cash crops (cotton, tomato and potato) than for cereal crops (wheat, maize). The structural equation model indicated that residual film generated indirect negative effects on crop yield and WUE by directly affecting soil physicochemical properties and crop root growth, with the standard path coefficients of -0.302 and - 0.217, respectively. The results would provide a theoretical basis for reducing residual film pollution on farmland and promoting the green and sustainable development of agriculture.
Effects of Different Plastic Mulching Film on Soil Hydrothermal Status and Water Utilization by Spring Maize in Northwest China

Abstract:The problem of residual film pollution in farmland caused by polyethylene mulching films is serious. The application effects of different mulching films combined with drip irrigation on maize planting in the Ili area, Xinjiang, China, were explored. In this study, four types of mulching films and non-mulching treatment were used to study the degradation properties of different plastic mulching and their effects on the dynamic changes of soil moisture, heat, and crop yields of maize under drip irrigation. The results showed that after 160 days of mulching film, only small cracks appeared in polyethylene mulching films. The degradation performance of white oxo-biodegradable film treatment was optimal than the black oxo-biodegradable film treatment. The quality loss rate of the two biodegradable films were 52.26 and 48.48%, respectively. Various mulching film treatments could increase soil moisture in the early stage of maize growth. At the 0–60 cm soil layer, the soil moisture under the white oxo-biodegradable mulching film and black oxo-biodegradable mulching film treatments were lower by 2.75 and 2.66% ( p < 0.05) than the white polyethylene mulching film and black polyethylene mulching film treatments. The soil water consumption was highest in the non-mulching treatment, followed by biodegradable film, and the small least value was observed in the polyethylene film treatment. The average soil temperature at depth of 0–15 cm in white polyethylene mulching film, black polyethylene mulching film, white oxo-biodegradable mulching film, and black oxo-biodegradable mulching film treatments were 1.43, 1.16, 0.72 and 0.64°C higher than the non-mulching treatment, respectively. Mulching films treatment played a critical role in increasing production and improving water use efficiency. The black polyethylene mulching film treatment had the highest yield and the best water use efficiency. The black oxo-biodegradable mulching film treatment only reduces the yield by 0.33% compared to the black polyethylene mulching film treatment, and the water use efficiency was only reduced by 0.90% ( p > 0.05). Comprehensive analysis showed that black oxo-biodegradable mulching film could be used as a substitute for polyethylene mulching film and can be applied to the production practice of drip irrigation maize in the Ili area.
