Abstract:Based on a previous study of deriving the chiral Lagrangian (CL) from QCD, we illustrate the main feature of QCD predictions for the CL coefficients (CLC) in certain approximations. We first show that, in the large-N, limit, the anomaly part contributions to the CLC are exactly cancelled by certain terms in the normal part contributions (NPC), so that the final results only concern the remaining NPC depending on the QCD interactions. We then do the calculation in a simple approach with further approximations. The obtained CLC and quark condensate are consistent with the experiments.

Abstract:We formally derive the chiral Lagrangian for low lying pseudoscalar mesons from the first principles of QCD considering the contributions from the normal part of the theory without taking an approximation. The derivation is based on the standard generating functional of QCD in the path integral formalism. The gluon-field integration is formally carried out by expressing the result in terms of the physical Green's functions of the gluon. To integrate over the quark held, we introduce a bilocal auxiliary field Phi(x,y) representing the mesons. We then develop a consistent way of extracting the local pseudoscalar degree of freedom U(x) in Phi(x,y) and integrating out the rest degrees of freedom such that the complete pseudoscalar degree of freedom resides in U(x). With certain techniques, we work out the explicit U(x) dependence of the effective action up to the p(4) terms in the momentum expansion, which leads to the desired chiral Lagrangian in which all the coefficients contributed from the normal part of the theory are expressed in terms of certain quark Green's functions in QCD. Together with the exsisting QCD formulas for the anomaly contributions, the present results lead to the complete effective chiral Lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons. The final result can be regarded as the fundamental QCD definition of the coefficients in the chiral Lagrangian. The relation between the present QCD definition of the p(2)-order coefficient F-0(2) and the well-known appoximate result given by Pagels and Stoker is discussed.
Chiral Properties of Pseudoscalar Mesons on A Quenched 20(4) Lattice with Overlap Fermions

Abstract:The chiral properties of the pseudoscalar mesons are studied numerically on a quenched 20(4) lattice with the overlap fermion. We elucidate the role of the zero modes in the meson propagators, particularly that of the pseudoscalar meson. The non-perturbative renormalization constant Z(A) is determined from the axial Ward identity and is found to be almost independent of the quark mass for the range of quark masses we study; this implies that the O(a(2)) error is small. The pion decay constant f(pi) is calculated from which we determine the lattice spacing to be 0.148 fm. We look for the quenched chiral log in the pseudoscalar decay constants and the pseudoscalar masses and we find clear evidence for its presence. The chiral log parameter delta is determined to be in the range 0.15-0.4, which is consistent with that predicted from quenched chiral perturbation theory.

Abstract:We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Pad\'e approximant which builds in both the limits $m_\pi \to 0$ and $m_\pi \to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, model independent extrapolation to the physical pion mass which should be extremely reliable.
Chiral Suppression and Su(3) Symmetry in Scalar Glueball Decays

Abstract:We theoretically evaluate the decay rates of a scalar glueball up to the order O(alpha(s)), where only two Feynman diagrams contribute and a special attention is paid on possible flavour SU(3) symmetry breaking in the process. It is concluded that the SU(3) flavour symmetry may be respected in any case. However, due to chiral suppression in G(0) -> (q) over barq, Gamma(G(0) -> (Q) over barq (q) over barq) very likely is larger than Gamma(G(0) -> (q) over barq). These results are supported by the experimental data on the decays of chi(c0)(1P) (0(++)). Based on this result, we propose a criterion to identify the scalar glueball.
The Chiral Lagrangian of CP-Violating Axion-Like Particles

Abstract:We discuss the construction of the most general CP-violating chiral Lagrangian for an axion-like particle (ALP). Starting with an effective Lagrangian containing light quarks and gluons, we provide its matching onto a chiral effective Lagrangian at $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$ described in terms of mesons and baryons, identifying the correspondence between the Jarlskog invariants of the two theories. After deriving the ALP interactions with mesons and baryons, we analyse a few relevant phenomenological implications such as the permanent electric dipole moments of nucleons and the CP-violating ALP and kaon decays.This work provides the necessary tools for further phenomenological analyses connecting low-energy observables with the couplings of the underlying ultraviolet complete theory.

Abstract:We present a study of chiral behavior of light meson form factors in QCD with three flavors of overlap quarks. Gauge ensembles are generated at single lattice spacing 0.12 fm with pion masses down to 300 MeV. The pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors and the kaon semileptonic form factors are precisely calculated using the all-to-all quark propagator. We discuss their chiral behavior using the next-to-next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory.

Abstract:The quenched chiral logarithms are examined on a 16(3)x28 lattice with Iwasaki gauge action and overlap fermions. The pion decay constant f(pi) is used to set the lattice spacing, a=0.200(3) fm. With pion mass as low as similar to180 MeV, we see the quenched chiral logarithms clearly in m(pi)(2)/m and f(P), the pseudoscalar decay constant. We analyze the data to determine how low the pion mass needs to be in order for the quenched one-loop chiral perturbation theory (chiPT) to apply. With the constrained curve-fitting method, we are able to extract the quenched chiral logarithmic parameter delta together with other low-energy parameters. Only for m(pi)less than or equal to300 MeV do we obtain a consistent and stable fit with a constant delta which we determine to be 0.24(3)(4) (at the chiral scale Lambda(chi)=0.8 GeV). By comparing to the 12(3)x28 lattice, we estimate the finite volume effect to be about 2.7% for the smallest pion mass. We also fitted the pion mass to the form for the re-summed cactus diagrams and found that its applicable region is extended farther than the range for the one-loop formula, perhaps up to m(pi)similar to500-600 MeV. The scale independent delta is determined to be 0.20(3) in this case. We study the quenched non-analytic terms in the nucleon mass and find that the coefficient C-1/2 in the nucleon mass is consistent with the prediction of one-loop chiPT. We also obtain the low energy constant L-5 from f(pi). We conclude from this study that it is imperative to cover only the range of data with the pion mass less than similar to300 MeV in order to examine the chiral behavior of the hadron masses and decay constants in quenched QCD and match them with quenched one-loop chiPT.

Abstract:The chiral susceptibility is given by the scalar vacuum polarization at zero total momentum. This follows directly from the expression for the vacuum quark condensate so long as a nonperturbative symmetry preserving truncation scheme is employed. For QCD in-vacuum the susceptibility can rigorously be defined via a Pauli-Villars regularization procedure. Owing to the scalar Ward identity, irrespective of the form or Ansatz for the kernel of the gap equation, the consistent scalar vertex at zero total momentum can automatically be obtained and hence the consistent susceptibility. This enables calculation of the chiral susceptibility for markedly different vertex Ansatze. For the two cases considered, the results were consistent and the minor quantitative differences easily understood. The susceptibility can be used to demarcate the domain of coupling strength within a theory upon which chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. Degenerate massless scalar and pseudoscalar bound-states appear at the critical coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Nontrivial topological gluon configuration is one of the remarkable features of the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Due to chiral anomaly, the chiral imbalance between right- and left-hand quarks can be induced by the transition of the nontrivial gluon configurations between different vacuums. In this review, we will introduce the origin of the chiral chemical potential and its physical effects. These include: (1) the chiral imbalance in the presence of strong magnetic and related physical phenomena; (2) the influence of chiral chemical potential on the QCD phase structure; and (3) the effects of chiral chemical potential on quark stars. Moreover, we propose for the first time that quark stars are likely to be a natural laboratory for testing the destruction of strong interaction CP.
Derivation of the Effective Chiral Lagrangian for Pseudoscalar, Scalar, Vector and Axial-Vector Mesons from QCD

Abstract:A previous formal derivation of the effective chiral Lagrangian for low-lying pseudoscalar mesons from first-principles QCD without approximations [Q. Wang, Y.-P. Kuang, X.-L. Wang, and M. Xiao, Phys. Rev. D 61, 054011 (2000)] is generalized to further include scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons. In the large N-c limit and with an Abelian approximation, we show that the properties of the newly added mesons in our formalism are determined by the corresponding underlying fundamental homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation, which yields the equations of motion for the scalar, vector, and axialvector meson fields at the level of an effective chiral Lagrangian. The masses appearing in the equations of motion of the meson fields are those determined by the corresponding Bethe-Salpeter equation.
Calculation of the chiral Lagrangian coefficients with light vector mesons

Abstract:We calculate the coefficients in the effective chiral Lagrangian from QCD, which includes pseudo-scalar mesons and vector mesons (with hidden symmetry), up to O(p4). This encompasses both the normal and anomalous parts. Our work builds on a previous study that derived the chiral Lagrangian from first principles of QCD, where the low-energy coefficients are defined in terms of specific Green's functions in QCD. This research extends our earlier efforts that focused on calculating the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian for pure pseudo-scalar mesons. This marks the first calculation of chiral Lagrangian coefficients for vector mesons from QCD, particularly for the important parameters a and g, which are typically considered inputs in existing literature. Notably, the regularization method used previously is inadequate for this broader scope. We find that cut-off regularization yields reasonable results for both pseudo-scalar mesons and vector mesons, though it has certain limitations. Finally, we demonstrate that our method aligns with the Weinberg sum rules.

A Chirally Symmetric Effective Action For Vector And Axial-Vector Fields In A Global Color Symmetry Model Of Qcd

Abstract:We consider the quantum field theory of a model of an extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type with a QCD based nonlocal fermion current-current interaction which has global SU(Nc) symmetry. We obtain an exact bosonization of this model in four Euclidean dimensions using auxiliary bilocal fields and discuss the dynamical breakdown of chiral symmetry in the massless fermion limit. A local field bosonization is obtained by decomposing the bilocal fields in terms of complete orthonormal sets of functions with the expansion coefficients, which are local functions, identified as the local meson fields. Retaining the ground state pseudoscalar, vector and pseudovector local fields we obtain a local effective action for this sector of the theory. The derivative expansion of the fermionic determinant necessary to obtain this local action is self-regularizing because of the bilocal substructure present in the model which is manifest in the form factors that are associated with the local fields. In our local action the value of each coefficient depends critically on the underlying fermionic dynamics through these form factors and the vacuum functions. As a consequence of this the vector and pseudovector fields in the theory are best interpreted as simple fermion-antifermion bound states rather than as massive Yang-Mills fields or exotic composites of the pseudoscalars; interpretations that we find are not in general admitted when models such as the GCM are treated correctly. Identifying then the physical vector and pseudovector fields with the linearly transforming chiral partners introduced by the bosonization, we obtain an effective action for this sector of the meson spectrum which predicts values for the kinematic and dynamic quantities associated with these fields.

Abstract:In this talk I present recent developments in chiral dynamics of hadrons and hadrons in a medium addressing the following points: interaction of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons with the octet of baryons of the nucleon, showing recent experimental evidence on the existence of two Λ(1405) states, the interaction of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons with the decuplet of baryons of the Δ, with particular emphasis on the Λ(1520) resonance, dynamically generated by this interaction. Then I review the interaction of kaons in a nuclear medium and briefly discuss the situation around the claims of deeply bound states in nuclei. The large renormalization of the Λ(1520) in the nuclear medium is shown as another example of successful application of the chiral unitary techniques.

Abstract:Confining configurations are introduced into the standard instanton vacuum model. This drastically improves theoretical properties of the vacuum: instanton size density $d(\rho)$ stabilizes at $\rho\sim 0.2 fm$, all chiral effects are formulated in a gauge-invariant way and quarks are confined. An interesting interplay of chiral and confining dynamics is observed; for the realistic values of parameters the Georgi-Manohar picture emerges with chiral radius $R_{ch}\sim \rho\sim 0.2 fm$ much less than confining radius $R_c\sim$ hadron radius $\sim 1 fm$. In the limit $R_{ch}\ll R_c$ the chiral mass $M_{ch}(p)$ is unaffected by confinement and can be taken in the local limit $M_{ch}(p=0)$. Different types of effective chiral Lagrangians (ECL) are obtained, containing all or a part of gluon, quark and Nambu--Goldstone--meson fields. The ECL are manifestly gauge--invariant and in the limit of no gluon fields coincide with those found previously. The problem of the double role of the pion -- as a Goldstone meson or as a $q\bar{q}$ system is briefly disscussed using confining ECL with quarks, mesons and gluons.
Controlling atom-atom interaction at ultralow temperatures by dc electric fields

Abstract:We propose a physical mechanism for tuning the atom-atom interaction strength at ultra-low temperatures. In the presence of a dc electric field the interatomic potential is changed due to the effective dipole-dipole interaction between the polarized atoms. Detailed multi-channel scattering calculations reveal features never before discussed for ultra-cold atomic collisions. We demonstrate that optimal control of the effective atom-atom interactions can be achieved under reasonable laboratory conditions. Implications of this research on the physics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and on the pursuit for atomic degenerate fermion gases will be discussed.

Abstract:We give a brief overview of recent theoretical and experimental results on the chiral magnetic effect and spin polarization effect in heavy-ion collisions. We present updated experimental results for the chiral magnetic effect and related phenomena. The time evolution of the magnetic fields in different models is discussed. The newly developed quantum kinetic theory for massive fermions is reviewed. We present theoretical and experimental results for the polarization of Λ hyperons and the ρ _00 value of vector mesons.

Abstract:The solution of the axial U(1) problem, the role of the topology of the gauge group in forcing the breaking of axial symmetry in any irreducible representation of the observable algebra and the theta vacua structure are revisited in the temporal gauge with attention to the mathematical consistency of the derivations. Both realizations with strong and weak Gauss law are discussed; the control of the general mechanisms and structures is obtained on the basis of the localization of the (large) gauge transformations and the local generation of the chiral symmetry. The Schwinger model in the temporal gauge exactly reproduces the general results.

Local Chirality of Low-Lying Dirac Eigenmodes and the Instanton Liquid Model

Abstract:The reasons for using low-lying Dirac eigenmodes to probe the local structure of topological charge fluctuations in QCD are discussed, and the interpretation of the local chiral orientation probability distribution in these modes (as compared with the instanton picture) is clarified. The results with overlap Dirac operator in Wilson gauge backgrounds at lattice spacings ranging from a{approx}0.04 fm to a{approx}0.12 fm are reported, and it is found that the size and density of local structures responsible for double-peaking of the distribution are in disagreement with the assumptions of the Instanton Liquid Model. We argue that our results suggest that vacuum fluctuations do not produce locally quantized (integer-valued) topological charge in QCD, contrary to the semiclassical picture.
