Abstract:• Aim: To compare the efficacy of two types of argon green laser photocoagulation for retinal breaks, and to evaluate the effect of argon green laser photocoagulation for rhgmatogenous limited retina. • Methods: Sixty-four eyes of 64 patients with symptomatic retinal breaks were included in this study. They were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A consisted of 34 patients and their retinal breaks were encircled by placing 2 or 3 rows of laser burns in the sound retina; Group B was composed of 30 patients and press-on laser spots were additionally applied around edges of their retinal breaks except for visual acuity, anterior segment and tonometry; hardly had their pupils been largely dilated when the retinal breaks were searched with binocular indirective ophthalmoscope and so on. If necessary, scleral indentation was performed. The efficacy of the two types of laser photocoagulations, their complications, changes of their visual acuity and follow-up outcomes of the two groups were compared. The mean follow-up periods of the two groups were 23.2±8.Omo and 22.2±7.5mo respectively. • Results: 1 Anatomical results: In Group A, 27 eyes (79.41%) anatomic success and in Group B, 29 eyes (96.67%) anatomic success; the variation of the two group was statistically significant (P<0.05). 2 No significant difference between the two groups was observed in visual results. 3 No significant difference between the two groups was observed in complications. 4 The morbidity rate of retinal detachment at 36mo was similar between the two groups. • Conclusion: Procedure for producing press-on laser spots additionally around edges of the retinal breaks was a safer and an effective way for the treatment of retinal breaks.
