Abstract:Dendrimers are artifi cial polymers topologically based on the structure of a tree. They are synthesized in a step-wise manner from branched monomer units. One can precisely control properties of the molecules such as shape, dimensions, density, polarity, fl exibility, and solubility by choosing of these building units and functional group chemistry. Dendrimers combine typical characteristics of small organic molecules like defi ned composition and monodispersivity with those of polymers such as high molecular weight that results in multitude of physical properties1,2. Poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) with an ellipsoidal or spheroidal shape is one of the most-studied starburst macromolecules. It has a much higher amino group density comparing with conventional macromolecules, e.g. a third generation PAMAM prepared from ammonia core has 1.24 × 10-4 amine moieties per unit volume (cubic Angstrom units) in contrast to the 1.58 × 10-6 amine moieties per unit volume of a conventional star polymer4. The high density of amino groups in PAMAM is expected to be a new agent in dye decolorisation.
