Abstract:Coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulations are performed for lyotropic liquid-crystalline (LC) solutions of semiflexible rod-like molecules, which are realized by harmonic-stretching potential and angle-bending potential. The phase behavior and molecular dynamic information are investigated. When the concentration of rod-like molecules increases, the solution transits from isotropic to binary phase and then to anisotropic phase. The influences of chain length, temperature, solvent solubility, and chain rigidity are studied. The simulation for the phase behavior successfully reproduces the predictions of Flory lattice theory on the rod-like molecule solution. The decrement of the chain rigidity increases the concentration of phase transition, and the apparent persistence length is increases by molecular alignments with LC formations at higher concentrations.

Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers are categorized as either mobile or fixed crystals, depending on chain mobility in the crystalline region. In this work, we investigate molecular dynamics and phase structure in the cocrystal consisting of fixed and mobile polymer crystals by solid-state (ss) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that (i) the mobile component begins large amplitude motions associated with crystal-crystal transition, while fixed ones keep their rigidity in the cocrystal, and (ii) asymmetric molecular dynamics leads to nanosegregations into mobile- and fixed-rich domains in the cocrystal below the melting temperature (Tm). The observed phase separation induced by asymmetric molecular dynamics is similar to the phase separation of the miscible amorphous polymer blend; however, it is limited to two dimensions due to the parallel packing of the stems inside the cocrystal, as well as chain connectivity at the crystalline-amorphous boundary.

Abstract:A dynamic Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is performed to investigate the phase behavior of mixtures of flexible polymers and low molecular weight thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs). The polymer is represented by three-dimensional self-avoiding lattice chains, while the LC is described by the Lebwohl-Lasher nematogen model. The initially homogeneous rod-coil mixture is, following a deep quench, separated into an isotropic phase rich in coils and a nematic phase rich in rods. The underlying spinodal decomposition (SD) process is then simulated and studied extensively. This is the first simulation of SD in a rod-coil mixture where the nematic ordering is included. Concentration fluctuations with a conserved order parameter are thus coupled with orientation fluctuations with a nonconserved order parameter. It is found that the early stage SD in the rod-coil mixture still exhibits the dominant spatial wavelength and that the scalar scattering functions in the late stage of SD obey the Furukawa scaling law. The kinetic difference between the so-called isotropic and anisotropic SD regions is, however, much less pronounced than predicted recently by the mean-field theory.
Phase Behavior Of Lyotropic Rigid-Chain Polymer Liquid Crystal Studied By Dissipative Particle Dynamics

Abstract:The phase behavior of lyotropic rigid-chain liquid crystal polymer was studied by dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) with variations of the solution concentration and temperature. A chain of fused DPD particles was used to represent each mesogenic polymer backbone surrounded with the strongly interacted solvent molecules. The free solvent molecules were modeled as independent DPD particles, where each particle includes a lump of solvent molecules with the volume roughly equal to the solvated polymer segment. The simulation shows that smectic-B (S-B), smectic-A (S-A), nematic (N), and isotropic (I) phases exist within certain regions in the temperature and concentration parameter space. The temperature-dependent S-B/S-A, S-A/N, and N/I phase transitions occur in the high concentration range. In the intermediate concentration range, the simulation shows coexistence of the anisotropic phases and isotropic phase, where the anisotropic phases can be the S-B, S-A, or N phases. Mole fraction and compositions of the coexisted phases are determined from the simulation, which indicates that concentration of rigid rods in isotropic phase increases as the temperature increases. By fitting the orientational distribution function of the systems, the biphasic coexistence is further confirmed. From the parameter alpha obtained for the simulation, the distribution of the rigid rods in the two coexistence phases is quantitatively evaluated. By using model and simulation methods developed in this work, the phase diagrams of the lyotropic rigid-chain polymer liquid crystal are obtained. Abstract:Brownian dynamics simulations are performed to investigate self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers that contain two types of rod blocks. These rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers are capable of self-assembling into liquid crystalline (LC) structures with hierarchy. The morphologies of the hierarchical LC structures can be controlled by temperature, symmetry of LC blocks, and block length. As the temperature decreases, a transition from isotropic lamellae to smectic C lamellae is observed, accompanied by an increase in orientational ordering and tilt angle of rod blocks. For the hierarchical lamellae-in-lamella structures formed by symmetric block copolymers, there are two LC phases with nearly identical ordering and tilt angle for two rod blocks. While for the lamellae-in-lamellae formed by asymmetric block copolymers, the two LC phases exhibit two different length scales with diverse ordering degrees and tilt angles. By adjusting the lengths of coil and rod blocks, the stability regions of the structures are mapped out in space of the block length versus the temperature. The findings in the present work could provide useful information for understanding the self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers and designing hierarchical liquid crystalline structures.

Abstract:Lattice theory of rigid rods is extended to describe the microphase separation behavior of a rod-coil diblock copolymer in solution. The free energy was formulated by inclusion of the energy terms arising from the core-corona interface between the rods and coils and the corona formed by the coils into the lattice model of rigid rods. The rod-coil diblock copolymer exhibits lyotropic mesophases with lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical structures when the copolymer concentration is above a critical value. The tendency of the rodlike blocks to form orientational order plays an important role in the formation of lyotropic phases. Influences of polymer-solvent interaction, surface free energy, and molecular architectures of the rod-coil diblock copolymer on the phase behaviors were studied, and phase diagrams were mapped accordingly. The theoretical results were compared with some existing experimental observations and a good agreement is shown.

Abstract:We report a \st{novel multi-scale} simulation methodology to quantitatively predict the thermodynamic behaviour extcolor{blue}{(phase diagrams)} of polymer mixtures, that exhibit phases with broken orientational symmetry. Our system consists of a binary mixture of short oligomers ( ) and long rod-like mesogens ( ). Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulations we infer the topology of the temperature-dependent free energy landscape, from the probability distributions of the components for a range of compositions. The mixture exhibits nematic (N) and smectic phases (Sm-A) as a function of two temperature scales, , that governs the demixing transition, and the nematic-isotropic temperature. Thus in addition to the isotropic (I), a nematic (N) phases observed in simulations of similar systems earlier we report the formation of a new entropy-stabilized phase separated smectic-A (Sm-A) phase with alternating mesogen-rich and oligomer-rich layers. Using the mean-field free energy for polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs), with suitably chosen parameter values, we construct a mean-field phase diagram that matches those obtained from CGMD simulations. Our results are applicable to mixtures of synthetic and biological macromolecules that undergo phase separation and are orientable, thereby giving rise to the liquid crystalline phases. Our proposed methodology has a distinct advantage over other computational techniques in its applicability to systems with complex molecular interactions and in capturing the coarsening dynamics of systems involving multiple order parameters.

Abstract:This article reviews recent progress in the computer simulation of liquid crystals at the molecular level. It covers the use of simple rigid-body models of the constituent molecules, and more detailed modelling via atomistic force fields. Bulk mesophases, inhomogeneous systems, and interfaces are discussed. Recent progress in calculating elastic properties and dynamics is summarised. As well as presenting an overview, some specific topics of recent interest are highlighted: the biaxial nematic phase, chiral phases, ionic liquid crystals, and charge-transfer systems.

Coarse-grained molecular simulation of the effect of liquid crystal molecular pitch on structure in cylindrical confinement

Abstract:Blue phases (BPs) consist of three-dimensional self-assembled structures formed by a double-twisted columnar arrangement of liquid crystal molecules. Although their unique optical and structural properties render BPs particularly useful for applications such as liquid crystal displays, BPs typically appear in a narrow temperature range between the isotropic and nematic phases. This thermodynamic instability impedes their practical applicability. However, the simulations we present here showed that, in a quasi-one-dimensional system confined to nanospace, a phase equivalent to the BP appears and persists between the nematic and smectic phases. Confinement to a nanotube (NT) with a relatively small radius enables the BP to be maintained over a wide temperature range, whereas for an NT with a relatively larger radius, the BP appears only in a very narrow temperature range between the aforementioned phases. We additionally showed that the pitch of the BP is dependent on and can be controlled by adjusting the radius of the NTs. This finding has significant implications for the potential application of these materials in fields such as photonics and chiral separation technologies.

Abstract:We propose a self-consistent coarse-graining procedure for realistic Brownian dynamics simulations of dilute solutions consisting of van der Waals force-driven aggregated polymer chains. A specific application investigated here concerns mesoscale aggregation properties in dilute conjugated polymer solutions, knowledge of which has proven crucial for controlling the electrical-conduction and light-emitting behaviors of the solution-cast polymer films. Beginning with a bead-rod/bead-spring chain, the interaction between two non-bonded beads, currently parameterized through a Lennard-Jones potential, is constructed so that the single chain geometry matches that in the real polymer solution. At the second stage of coarse-graining, the mother bead-rod/bead-spring chain is further mapped onto a dumbbell, with the potential function constructed so as to reproduce the pair interchain potential obtained on the basis of the previously constructed chain models. Without additional adjustable parameters, the simulation may, in principle, be utilized to investigate specific dilute polymer solutions in which the supramolecular aggregation structure is primarily controlled through van der Waals attraction and excluded-volume repulsion. Simulation results are examined in detail for a widely studied semiconducting, semiflexible polymer in two distinct solvents (aromatic or aliphatic), as well as for a usual flexible, basically non-aggregated polymer solution for contrasting purpose. Despite a significant degree of coarse-graining associated with the dumbbell model, the simulation can, ingeneral, clearly distinguish between aggregated and non-aggregated polymer solutions and, in particular, successfully capture the underlying aggregation features of the target polymer solutions as implied by recent experimental observations. In the meantime, detailed insight is gained into the essential physics governing supramolecular aggregation of semiflexible chains in dilute solution.
Coarse-Grained Simulation Model for Crystalline Polymer Solids by using Breakable Bonds

Abstract:We propose a highly coarse-grained simulation model for crystalline polymer solids with crystalline lamellar structures. The mechanical properties of a crystalline polymer solid are mainly determined by the crystalline lamellar structures. This means that coarse-grained models rather than fine-scale molecular models are suitable to study mechanical properties. We model a crystalline polymer solid by using highly coarse-grained particles, of which size is comparable to the crystalline layer thickness. One coarse-grained particle consists of multiple subchains, and is much larger than monomers. Coarse-grained particles are connected by bonds to form a network structure. Particles are connected by soft but ductile bonds, to form a rubber-like network. Particles in the crystalline region are connected by hard but brittle bonds. Brittle bonds are broken when large deformations are applied. We perform uniaxial elongation simulations based on our coarse-grained model. As the applied strain increases, crystalline layers are broken into pieces and non-affine and collective motions of broken pieces are observed. Our model can successfully reproduce yield behaviors which are similar to typical crystalline polymer solids.

Abstract:Rich phase structures and evolutions of the blends of smectic-nernatic (S-N) liquid crystalline (LC) diblock copolymers and a nematic solvent (5CB) are investigated in a concentrated regime. These types of fully LC systems are macroscopically homogeneous with ordered phase-separated structures on the nanometer scale. By varying the temperature as well as the content of 5CB, the phase diagram of the blends is constructed, where the order-to-order transition (OOT) between lamellar and cylindrical nanostructures can be induced either lyotropically or thermotropically. The temperature and concentration dual-responsive properties are found to be closely related to the selectivity and distribution of 5CB, in addition to its phase transformation at the nematic-isotropic transition. As inferred from the miscibility and phase behaviors of its blends with the respective smectic and nematic homopolyrners, the partition of 5CB in the S-N diblock copolymers and its influence on the phase structures reveal the important role of the LC interactions on the self-assembly of the diblock copolymers.
Investigating Nucleation of Phase Transitions in Rod-Coil Block Copolymers

Abstract:It is known that the nucleation of liquid crystal polymers with orientation interactions can reduce the energy barrier during the polymer crystallization. In this work, we combine the SCFT and string method to explore the nucleation and liquid crystal behavior of rod-coil block copolymers. By examining nucleation transitions from cylinders with different directions to lamellae, we obtain the information of critical nuclei for the first time, including the volume, shape and energy barrier. We further investigate the impacts of orientation interactions along different transition paths. The results show that if the cylinder and lamellae have inconsistent directions, the nucleation will occur with relatively longer transition path and multiple reorientations, and thus leading to higher energy barrier. Nucleation under different Flory-Huggins interactions and nucleation via precursory metastable structures are investigated, and compared with the classical nucleation theory. This work develops the nucleation studies for complex block copolymers with segment orientations, which is helpful for understanding the nucleation of liquid crystal polymers.

Abstract:Biological liquid crystals, a rich set of soft materials with rod‐like structures widely existing in nature, possess typical lyotropic liquid crystalline phase properties both in vitro (e.g., cellulose, peptides, and protein assemblies) and in vivo (e.g., cellular lipid membrane, packed DNA in bacteria, and aligned fibroblasts). Given the ability to undergo phase transition in response to various stimuli, numerous practices are exercised to spatially arrange biological liquid crystals. Here, a fundamental understanding of interactions between rod‐shaped biological building blocks and their orientational ordering across multiple length scales is addressed. Discussions are made with regard to the dependence of physical properties of nonmotile objects on the first‐order phase transition and the coexistence of multi‐phases in passive liquid crystalline systems. This work also focuses on how the applied physical stimuli drives the reorganization of constituent passive particles for a new steady‐state alignment. A number of recent progresses in the dynamics behaviors of active liquid crystals are presented, and particular attention is given to those self‐propelled animate elements, like the formation of motile topological defects, active turbulence, correlation of orientational ordering, and cellular functions. Finally, future implications and potential applications of the biological liquid crystalline materials are discussed.
Self-assembly of semiflexible block copolymers: 2D numerical implementation of self-consistent field theory

Abstract:The phase behavior of rod-coil diblock copolymers is investigated in a two-dimensional positional space by using self-consistent field theory (SCFT) based on wormlike chain model. The segment orientation is defined on a unit spherical surface in three-dimensional space with an icosahedron triangular mesh and a finite volume algorithm is borrowed to numerically solve the Laplacian on the sphere. By taking advantage of 2D space calculation, the phase diagram including isotropic, nematic, smectic-A, smectic-C and further appended non-lamellar structures is constructed for the rod-coil diblock copolymers within the framework of Onsager excluded-volume interactions, in which microphase separation and liquid crystalline behavior are driven only by the entropy. Similar to our previous 1D space calculations, although smectic structures occupy large region in the phase diagram, tetragonal packed arrays of ellipse like domains in our 2D space simulations is observed at relatively high coil fractions and strong orientational interactions. We also reexamine the stability of zigzag and confirm it as a thermodynamically metastable structure of rod-coil copolymers in terms of the SCFT free energy.
Solvent Effect On Phase Transition Of Lyotropic Rigid-Chain Liquid Crystal Polymer Studied By Dissipative Particle Dynamics

Abstract:Effect of solvent quality on phase transition of lyotropic rigid-chain liquid crystal polymer is studied by dissipative particle dynamics simulation. A rod composed of fused DPD particles is used to represent the solvated rigid polymer. The effect of solvent quality is investigated by adjusting the repulsion parameter between the rods and solvent particles. The simulation shows that the solvent quality has significant influences on the phase transition behavior of the system and the influences are also closely related with the concentrations before the solvent becomes extremely poor. The influences of the solvent quality are attributed to the interplay between the immiscibility-induced phase separation and nematic-isotropic phase transition, which can be described by the binodal lines and nematic-isotropic transition lines in the phase diagrams. If a system is located in the one phase region, it will undergo a typical nematic to isotropic phase transition as the temperature increases. If a system is located in the biphasic region, there are two different types of nematic-isotropic phase transitions depending on whether the transition temperature from the biphasic region to isotropic phase region is lower or higher than the nematic-isotropic transition temperature of the concentrated phase. The first type corresponds to the transition from the biphasic region to the isotropic one phase region and the second type is attributed to the nematic-isotropic phase transition that occurs in the concentrated phase. Abstract:Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis emerges as the most dependable method for structural determination. It serves as the definitive method, particularly in challenging cases where other approaches fail to yield precise results. However, the generation of high-quality single crystals remains a frequently encountered obstacle. Here, we present a strategy employing an alignment medium to enhance the growth of single crystals for small organic compounds. Furthermore, a mathematical crystallization model based on the classical nucleation theory was conducted specifically designed for alignment media. The hypothesis suggests that alignment media effectively reduce solution entropy, thereby lowering the free energy barrier associated with crystal nucleus formation and facilitating the crystallization process. Employing an alignment medium derived from self-assembled oligopeptide nanotubes (AAKLVFF), we successfully cultivated single crystals of diverse organic compounds. Our discovery unveils an innovative strategy and an accessible approach for acquiring single crystals.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) within cells gives rise to membraneless organelles, which play pivotal roles in numerous cellular functions. A comprehensive understanding of the functional aspects of intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) condensates necessitates elucidating their inherent structures and establishing correlations with biological functions. Coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations present a promising avenue for gaining insights into LLPS mechanisms of biomacromolecules. Essential to this endeavor is the development of tailored CG force fields for MD simulations, incorporating the full spectrum of biomolecules involved in the formation of condensates and accounting for real-time biochemical reactions coupled to the LLPS. Moreover, developing accurate theoretical frameworks and establishing links between condensate structure and its function are imperative for a thorough comprehension of LLPS of biological systems.

Abstract:We employed the nonequilibrium dissipative particle dynamics method to study the shear flow behaviors of rod-coil diblock copolymers in solutions. The effects of copolymer concentrations and molecular architecture on the rheology are investigated. The simulated results show that the shear flow behaviors change from Newtonian to non-Newtonian when the morphologies transform from micelles to gels by increasing the copolymer concentrations. For the non-Newtonian systems, it was found that the curve of the viscosity versus shear rate is divided into three regions, that is, shear thinning region I, platform region II, and shear thinning region III. From the physical origin, the three-region behavior is governed by the distinct flow behaviors of the rod and coil blocks and their different time scale in response to the shear field. Additionally, by tuning the molecular architectures, the simulated results reveal that the slopes in region I and region III are influenced by the length of rod and coil blocks, respectively. The present research revealed the microscopic origin of the complex rheological properties of rod-coil diblock copolymers in solutions and could provide useful information for preparing functional materials based on block copolymers.

Abstract:The internal molecular structure of lipid-based formulations (LBFs) is poorly understood. In this work we aimed at establishing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations as a tool for rapid screening and investigation of the internal environment of these formulations. In order to study complex LBFs composed of different kinds of lipids we simulated a number of systems containing either medium-chain or long-chain lipids with varying proportions of tri-, di-, and monoglycerides. Structural and dynamic measurements and analyses identified that the internal environment in a mixture of lipids was locally ordered even in the absence of water, which might explain some of the previously reported effects on drug solubility in these systems. Further, phase changes occurring upon water dispersion are well captured with coarse-grained simulations. Based on these simulations we conclude that the coarse-grained methodology is a promising in silico approach for rapid screening of structures formed in complex formulations. More importantly it facilitates molecular understanding of interactions between excipients and water at a feasible time scale and, hence, opens up for future virtual drug formulation studies.
