Abstract:The study focuses on the solution to automatically distinguish road elements from river in high resolution remote sensing image. Here, triangular method of fractal dimensions is used to process the IKONOS image for road elements and river distinguishing. The authors try to distinguish automatically road elements from river though they have many similar characters, such as linear feature and so on listed in the paper. Through simulation with Matlab, the effectiveness of the fractal algorithm is testified, and its application strategy is discussed. Furthermore, the fractal dimension methods will he pushed on automatic road elements extraction forward.

Abstract:Motivated by the observation that visual perception is quite sensitive to the irregularities of natural scenes, the incorporation of the multi-fractal spectrum and the fractal dimension into blind image quality assessment for perceptual features extraction is introduced. On the basis of a box-counting method, the multi-fractal spectrum and fractal dimension are extracted from natural scenes and then their discrepancies are quantified. Experiments on the LIVE image database show that consistency with subjective evaluation is achieved. In addition, these are remarkable advantages when compared with other popular methods are demonstrated.

Abstract:Till now, there were several methods of fractal texture extraction developed for high-resolution remotely sensed images: triangular prism, fractal Brownian motion, DBC (different box-counting) and multi-fractal. However, one proper method should be selected in application. Upon that, in the paper, taking QuickBird image as example, based on a rather entire classification system founded for the image, fractal dimensions and correlative parameter were utilized to analyze features of those methods; mean, variance and computation time were utilized to compare difference of them. Then several conclusions were drawn through the experiment: fractal texture could be an effective feature to distinguish ground objects; among those methods, triangular prism couldn't do well on ground objects' distinguishing, FBM wasn't accurate (without no-scale part), but DBC and multi-fractal represented better on distinguishing ground objects and computing efficiency.

Abstract:Mandelbrot's fractal geometry has sparked considerable interest in the remote sensing community since the publication of his highly influential book in 1977. Fractal models have been used in several image processing and pattern recognition applications such as texture analysis and classification. Applications of fractal geometry in remote sensing rely heavily on estimation of the fractal dimension. The fractal dimension (D) is a central construct developed in fractal geometry to describe the geometric complexity of natural phenomena as well as other complex forms. This paper provides a survey of several commonly used methods for estimating the fractal dimension and their applications to remote sensing problems. Methodological issues related to the use of these methods are summarized. Results from empirical studies applying fractal techniques are collected and discussed. Factors affecting the estimation of fractal dimension are outlined. Important issues for future research are also identified and discussed.

Abstract:Taking account of the fact that images of natural scenery have fractal character, we present a wavelet fractal interpolation algorithm that is applied in remote sensing image processing. The wavelet fractal interpolation algorithm uses the fractal interpolation algorithm to anticipate the high frequency component on high resolution from the high frequency component on low resolution. It has been found that this new wavelet fractal interpolation has better performance than the existing bilinear interpolation algorithm.

Abstract:Based on the Landsat TM image covering Qinghai Lake district received on June 29 of 1997 and using the fractal dimension arithmetic method for coastline, the length of the shoreline of the Qinghai Lake is measured and computed at different scales. It shows that the fractal dimension of the shoreline of Qinghai Lake is 1.0237. The results of this study indicate that, firstly, fractal dimension is a feasible approach for expressing characteristics of the shoreline. Secondly, remote sensing and GIS supported measurement of shoreline fractal dimension has obvious advantages such as saving considerably amount of work and raising work efficiency, which indicates that remote sensing and GIS techniques have very good application prospect in the measurement of fractal dimension of shoreline.

Abstract:The optimum segmentation of ground objects in a landscape is essential for interpretation of high-resolution remotely sensed imagery and detection of objects; and it is also a technical foundation to efficiently use spatial information in remote sensing imagery. Landscapes are complex system composed of a large number of heterogeneous components. There are many explicit homogeneous image objects that have similar spectral character and yet differ from surrounding objects in high-resolution remote sensing imagery. Thereby, a new concept of Distinctive Feature of fractal is put forward and used in deriving Distinctive Feature curve of fractal evolution in multiscale segmentation. Through distinguishing the extremum condition of Distinctive Feature curve and the inclusion relationship of fractals in multiscale representation the Scalar Order is built. This can help to determinate the optimum scale in image segmentation for simple-objects, and the potential meaningful image-object fitting the intrinsic scale of the dominant landscape object can be obtained. Based on the application in high-resolution remote sensing imagery in coastal areas, a satisfactory result was acquired.

Abstract:Based on object-oriented image analysis,a methodology combing selecting optimal segmentation scale and feature rule was proposed to extract water information in Hang-Jia-Hu water-net plain from the GF-2 remotely sensed images.To realize the rapid extraction of water information,the rates of change of local variance (ROC-LV) was calculated to determine the optimal scale parameter,and the separability and thresholds (SEaTH) method was used to establish the feature rule.Results show that the overall accuracy is 98.7％,the Kappa coefficient is 0.96,and the precision and recall of extracted water information are both more than 97.3％.The proposed methodology can correctly extract complicated water information and meet the demand of practical application.

Abstract:Three methods for fractal dimension analysis are applied to airborne real aperture radar ocean images to study the fractal characteristics of the ocean radar backscatter. It is found that although the sea surface has fractal properties, its x-band radar image exhibits no fractal characteristics when the dominating scattering mechanism is Bragg scattering. The result is discussed within the context of scattering mechanisms dominating radar echoes under these conditions. To compute the fractal dimension of the radar image correctly, differential box-counting approach, morphological method and wavelet variance method are evaluated and compared by analyzing simulated gray images with known fractal dimensions.

Abstract:The paper investigates a novel evaluation method of road roughness to overcome the shortages of the current used road roughness indices which cannot fine depict the characteristics of the road locally. Multi-fractal theory is employed to systematically research into appraising the road profile, which provides obvious multi-fractal characteristics. But the results of road surface simulation in each grades based on Fourier inverse transformation show there is no unique relation between multi-fractal spectral width and road roughness in different grades. However, in logarithmic distribution diagram, the vertical axis of the road intercept which have the same multi-fractal spectral width was different. Experimental results proved the IRI and multi-fractal spectrum width values are complementary to describe the road roughness. We proposed to signify the road roughness by combining multi-fractal spectral width and the IRI as a supplement of current indices.

Abstract:A novel scheme that makes use of improved level set extract roads in high-resolution remote sensing images (RS) is proposed. The traditional level set methods for image segmentation are computational expensive due to the re-initiation and the methods always only use the gray value as input information. To solve these problems, the proposed approach introduces a distance regularizing term into the CV model, and utilizes both gray features and each channel of HSI model to construct a new level set evolution function without re-initialization. Furthermore, a framework of dividing large images into sub-images is designed according to the size of the RS images. It makes the roads' objects lie in fewer images, and reduces the noises from the background. The proposed approach was tested by the QuickBird RS images at 0. 61 m resolution and two numeral indexes were defined to evaluate the results. Results show that the presented approach reduces the influence of area noises and is able to extracts the roads precisely. These make it be a valuable and promising method for decision-making in transportation.

Abstract:Based on the characteristic of remote sensing images, the shadow scope was detected with the method of texture analysis, and then the information in the shadow region was resumed by image enhancement. Then based on the random midpoint replacement method of fractal interruption, the shadow region was filled, and then the ground features in the shadow were retrieved truly. The processing result proved the method validity in project.

Abstract:Automated fundus screening is becoming a significant programme of telemedicine in ophthalmology. Instant quality evaluation of uploaded retinal images could decrease unreliable diagnosis. In this work, we propose fractal dimension of retinal vasculature as an easy, effective and explainable indicator of retinal image quality. The pipeline of our approach is as follows: utilize image pre-processing technique to standardize input retinal images from possibly different sources to a uniform style; then, an improved deep learning empowered vessel segmentation model is employed to extract retinal vessels from the pre-processed images; finally, a box counting module is used to measure the fractal dimension of segmented vessel images. A small fractal threshold (could be a value between 1.45 and 1.50) indicates insufficient image quality. Our approach has been validated on 30,644 images from four public database.

Abstract:A method for segmenting water bodies in optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images is proposed. It makes use of the textural features of the different regions in the image for segmentation. The method consists in a multiscale analysis of the images, which allows us to study the images regularity both, locally and globally. As results of the analysis, coarse multifractal spectra of studied images and a group of images that associates each position (pixel) with its corresponding value of local regularity (or singularity) spectrum are obtained. Thresholds are then applied to the multifractal spectra of the images for the classification. These thresholds are selected after studying the characteristics of the spectra under the assumption that water bodies have larger local regularity than other soil types. Classifications obtained by the multifractal method are compared quantitatively with those obtained by neural networks trained to classify the pixels of the images in covered against uncovered by water. In optical images, the classifications are also compared with those derived using the so-called Normalized Differential Water Index (NDWI).

Abstract:The new needs for quantitative and precise detection for marine dynamic features and environmental factors are addressed with the fast development of satellite remote sensing techniques and applications. The magnitudes of remote sensing data, various in-situ observed data, and the different scale mapping data are increased quickly. So the problems on capture, store, process, display and management of an unprecedented amount of information have became a very important. Satellite remote sensing associated with fractal approaches presented here are new methodologies in order to solve related scientific problems. The requirements of ocean remote sensing information applications are briefly introduced in the paper at the first. The theories and models of fractal system and the possibility of their ocean application as well as the examples of multi-scale management on oceanic features are described in detail. The potential of a remote sensing associated with fractal approach in detecting and manage of ocean is discussed and concluded at the final of the paper.

Abstract:Road is a kind of very typical artificial object. Road extraction from multi-scale remote sensing images is significant both in military field and in people's daily lives. With the development of remote sensing technology, the scale of remote sensing images that can be obtained becomes various. Therefore, the research of multi-scale remote sensing images is getting more and more attention and it is really a challenging task in the field of image processing. In this paper, a method of road extraction from multi-scale remote sensing images is proposed. Firstly, the textures are extracted and added to the bands of the original image. The filtering, resampling and segmentation operations are then implemented. Next, the spectral characteristics and textures of roads on the remote sensing images are statistically analyzed, and the changes of those on multi-scale remote sensing images are obtained. Then, considering the road characteristics displayed on remote sensing images, some parameters of spectral characteristics and textures are selected to extract roads using the objectoriented method. Finally, the results of road extraction are post-processed based on the opening and closing operation of mathematical morphology. This study has great significance in areas such as features optimization, target recognition, building feature database and improving the utilization of remote sensing data.
