Abstract:Unintentional as well as intentional electromagnetic interference can cause interference and performance degradation of microwave circuits or systems. In this article, a modified multiport lumped-network finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) method based on Y-matrix is proposed, where bilinear transform is used to incorporate the V–I relation of the lumped-network into FDTD iteration. It is further used for simulating transient responses of mesfet-based amplifiers, which are often used in many radar and communication systems. The excitation of such an RF amplifier is assumed to be an intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) signal but with different waveforms and magnitudes. Parametric studies are performed to show hybrid effects of waveforms and magnitudes of the IEMI signals on the transient coupled voltages at the output port of such mesfet-based amplifier, with useful information obtained for understanding the interaction process between the intentional electromagnetic interference signals and active components.
Modeling method of finite-difference time-domain based on frequency network models of active devices

Abstract:There are no ways to model some microwave active devices that have complex equivalent circuits, or even cannot yield their equivalent circuits by using traditional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. An FDTD method based on network models of active devices in frequency domain was presented to solve the problem. The frequency network parameters of active devices were measured by experimental methods. By using frequency network models, the inner circuits of devices were neglected, so the method fit for modeling the active devices with random complicated circuits. By incorporating the physical dimensions of the devices, the method built three dimensional models for active devices in FDTD algorithm, which resulted in improved modeling precision. Detailed modeling procedures were shown in modeling a 6 GHz field effect transistor (FET) amplifier circuit. The method is independent of devices inner circuits and has improved modeling precision.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) metal-low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCCs) structures are studied using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. These types of materials have excellent high frequency performances for the design of multi-layer superstrate-substrate for various passive microwave devices. Numerical results are presented to show the effects of LTCC permittivity and loss on the reflection and transmission coefficients of microstrip discontinuities, including air-bridges and spiral inductors.

Abstract:This letter proposes a novel hybrid finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method, which combines the full-wave FDTD (2, 4) method with a thin-wire model, a transmission-line equation, the Kirchhoff's law, and a two-port equivalent-circuit FDTD model, where antenna-cable coupling model and modified nodal analysismethod are also implemented through a set of proper boundary conditions. In our method, both coaxial cable and thinwire antenna are treated together without geometric meshing for full-wave simulation, and all the coupling processes among fields, transmission line equations, and circuit loads are carried out at the same time step. Such hybrid method is verified by comparing with both PSPICE and traditional FDTD method, and good agreements are obtained. Further, the proposed method is successfully applied to predict the transient electromagnetic responses of some complex transmission line networks in a vehicle-based metallic shelter.

Abstract:Traditional extended FDTD method incorporated the lumped-models or stable models of active devices may no longer gives high precision in the analysis of microwave active circuits when the operating frequencies become higher. An integrated FDTD method combined the Drift-diffuse transient models of semiconductor devices is presented in this paper. To demonstrate its efficiency and validity, this method is applied to analyze a microwave transistor circuit. It is shown that this method gives better precision than the traditional extended methods with the lumped-models and stable models.

Abstract:It is well known that intentional or unintentional electromagnetic interference can impact on microwave circuits or systems to make them improper functionality, and in this paper, we analysis the transient responses of two ultrawideband (UWB) filters under a high-power EMP. Based on a modified FDTD method, numerical calculation is performed to show the EMP interference impacting on the S-parameters of UWB filters which are usually used in the wideband integration of communication circiuts and systems. The statistical analysis provides a new procedure for a confidence determination of the interference behavior parameters.

Abstract:Wireless technologies has been attracting much attention due to its wide application. Thus it is important to predict the electromagnetic propagation characterization precisely. Full-wave time-domain electromagnetic methods are usually effective in rigorously modelling and evaluating wireless channels. However, their computational expenditures are expensive, when dealing with electrically large size problems consisting of fine structures. Thus, in this paper, a rigorous full-wave numerical solution, via the locally one-direction finite difference time domain (LOD-FDTD) method for lossy media, which reduces computational time by removing the Courant-Friedrich-Levy (CFL) stability condition, is applied to characterize the wireless channel. By comparing the simulation results with the conventional FDTD, the proposed method demonstrates both good simulation efficiency and high accuracy. Post-processing of the simulation results lead to effective channel characterization with path loss exponent and probability distribution of path loss.

Abstract:This communication presents a time-domain electric field integral equation (TDEFIE) solver, specifically designed to analyze ultrawideband (the ratio of highest and lowest frequency is over 10(33)) scattering from perfect electric conductors (PEC). The solver addresses the challenges associated with dense-mesh breakdown and high-degree collapse. To be specific, the Calder & oacute;n preconditioning technique and a narrow temporal excitation are adopted to avoid the ill-conditioning in space and time dimensions. Meanwhile, the Filon-type method is integrated, resulting in a Calder & oacute;n-stability-improved marching-on-in-degree (SIMOD) approach during the matrix construction. This method effectively addresses the oscillatory property of the generalized Laguerre polynomials. To obtain accurate results at low frequencies, we introduce two strategies based on Calder & oacute;n-SIMOD to eliminate the adverse effects of static error current (SEC): the static error current subtraction (SECS) method and its approximate version (ASECS). Consequently, numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach is both stable and highly accurate over an ultrawideband. It also indicates that the proposed method offers significant improvements over the existing marching-on-in-degree (MOD) methods, as well as providing a valuable tool for analyzing broadband electromagnetic scattering.

Abstract:A hybrid time-domain numerical method based on the full wave finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method combined with a modified 1-D FDTD method has been proposed to analyze the electromagnetic interference (EMI) of multiscale transmission line networks in a metallic cabin in this article. This method is implemented through two numerical solvers for full wave and transmission line simulations, respectively, by adopting a set of reasonable physical boundary conditions between external fields and transmission line network. By using Ampere's law, the external fields can be transferred to a voltage source that can be further used as the forcing terms in the telegraph equation of the transmission line network. To overcome the challenge introduced by the multiscale size of the transmission line network, we combine 1-D explicit and implicit FDTD methods together to solve the coaxial cables and interconnects in PCB, respectively. Thus, among different subdomains, the hybrid method can be carried with the same time step without the restriction of the stability condition. Numerical examples show the accuracy as well as efficiency of the proposed method compared with the HSPICE and traditional FDTD method. In addition, the method is used successfully in analyzing the EMI effects of a complex transmission line network inside a cabin illuminated by external electromagnetic wave.

Abstract:Compact 2D FDFD (two-dimensional finite-difference frequency-domain) methods were initially proposed by other researchers to solve the propagation constant of shielded uniform guided wave structures. In this paper, firstly we compare two compact 2D FDFD methods using four and six components of electromagnetic fields, which are applied to analyzing transmission lines with open boundaries. Then we extend them to extract the frequency-dependent circuit parameters of transmission lines. These R, L, C, G circuit parameters extracted via 1D transmission line theory are readily to be used for signal integrity analysis of high-speed circuits.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient and systematic approach for transient analysis of hybrid interconnect systems. The approach uses the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to fully characterize the subnetwork of the high-speed interconnects in the form of admittance parameters. It then uses the admittance parameters to construct a macromodel of the subnetwork by the vector fitting method (VFM). The resulting macromodel is ready to be synthesized into a SPICE-compatible circuit simulator to efficiently expedite the transient analysis of the hybrid system with interconnects and linear/nonlinear lumped circuit elements. Numerical examples show the validity of the method.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of complex structure simulation, the local nonuniform griding technique is investigated in the finite difference time domain (FDTD) solver, where the single field (SF) and hybrid implicit explicit (HIE) algorithms have been introduced. Some structures with fine details in one direction are simulated by using the proposed stratagem. Typically, the magnetic field for obtaining the sampled currents and far-field data is selectively updated to save memory and CPU time. Reflection error from the truncating boundary is decreased compared to the conventional FDTD method, as well as the stability is validated. Moreover, the original SF-HIE-FDTD updating procedures is modified to improve multithread computing efficiency. A layered rectangular dielectric resonator antenna and a microstrip bandpass filter models have been simulated. Results are in very good agreement with those from the conventional FDTD solver and from the commercial software, but up to 58.14% computation time is saved. Our proposed method is significant for the simulation of microwave circuit and antenna with fine structure, especially, the use of the nonuniform grid.

Abstract:This paper presents an effective modeling methodology for Ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas. The methodology is based on augmenting an existing narrow-band model with a macro-model while simultaneously perturbing component values of the narrow-band model. The narrow-band model is an empirical-based circuit and the macro-model described by rational functions is determined using data fitting approaches. The perturbation of component values of the narrow-band model is achieved by adjustments in SPICE. This method is demonstrated on the example of a 2.5 cm dipole antenna and a circular disc monopole antenna for UWB systems. Simulation results show that this methodology is effective over a wide bandwidth and suitable for modeling most UWB antennas.

Abstract:This paper presents an accurate and systematic approach for analysis of the signal integrity of the high-speed interconnects, which couples the full-wave finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with scattering (S) parameter based macromodeling by using rational function approximation and the circuit simulator. Firstly, the full-wave FDTD method is applied to characterize the interconnect subsystems, which is dedicated to extract the S parameters of the subnetwork consisting of interconnects with fairly complex geometry. Once the frequency-domain discrete data of the S parameters of the interconnect subnetwork is constructed, the rational function approximation is carried out to establish the macromodel of the interconnect subnetwork by employing the vector fitting method, which provides a more robust and accurate solution for the overall problem. Finally, the analysis of the signal integrity of the hybrid circuit can be fulfilled by using the S parameters based macromodel synthesis and simulation program with integrated circuits emphasis (SPICE) circuit simulator. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach is accurate and efficient to address the hybrid electromagnetic (interconnect part) and circuit problems, in which the electromagnetic field effects are fully considered and the strength of SPICE circuit simulator is also exploited.

Abstract:An accurate and systematic approach for the analysis of signal propagation at high‐speed planar interconnect systems is proposed in this paper. The approach integrates a macromodeling technique based on the full‐wave time domain method and rational function approximation together with the SPICE circuit simulation. The admittance Y transfer function in the form of a set of discrete frequency sampling data is established by using the full‐wave finite‐difference time‐domain (FDTD) method, which characterizes the high‐speed planar interconnect subnetwork. Thereafter, the macromodel of the interconnect subnetwork is constructed through rational function approximation by using the Vector fitting method, which results in an accurate and robust solution for the overall problem. Subsequently, the resultant macromodel can be synthesised and converted to a SPICE‐compatible equivalent circuit. Therefore, the signal propagation analysis is finally facilitated and expedited by using the SPICE circuit simulator. Time domain finite element method for metamaterial-based low frequency near field systems

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this work is to develop a computational paradigm for performance analysis of low-frequency electromagnetic devices containing both magnetic metamaterials (MTMs) and natural media. Design/methodology/approach A time domain finite element method (TDFEM) is proposed. The electromagnetic properties of the MTMs are modeled by a nonstandard Lorentz model. The time domain governing equation is derived by converting the one from the frequency domain into the time domain based on the Laplace transform and convolution. The backward difference is used for the temporal discretization. An auxiliary variable is introduced to derive the recursive formula. Findings The numerical results show good agreements between the time domain solutions and the frequency domain solutions. The error convergence trajectory of the proposed TDFEM conforms to the first-order accuracy. Originality/value To the best knowledge of the authors, the presented work is the first one focusing on TDFEMs for low-frequency near fields computations of MTMs. Consequently, the proposed TDFEM greatly benefits the future explorations and performance evaluations of MTM-based near field devices and systems in low-frequency electrical and electronic engineering.

Abstract:This paper reports on the modeling of the semiconductor photonic devices using 3D DTEQM-FDTD. The model includes the physics of Pauli Exclusion principle, Fermi-Dirac thermalization and state filling to describe the complex electron dynamics in semiconductor media to realize the full potential of FDTD. The carrier intraband and interband transition dynamics, energy band filling and thermal equilibrium are demonstrated in the model. The DTEQM-FDTD model includes the essential physics of complex dynamical media and yet computational efficient. It is applicable to a wide range of atomic and molecular media by applying the appropriate rate equations and energy level structure.

Abstract:In this work, we study the simulation effect of FDTD Method in microwave circuit. The microwave circuit is divided multiple Yee cells, then we can get the relevant parameters through parallel computation and sent they into SPICE for simulation. The numerical example shows that the proposed method has a higher speed than the common SPICE simulation.

Abstract:This paper presents the coupling of two commercially available simulation codes: DESSIS-ISE, a multidimensional semiconductor device and circuit simulator, and EMLAB-ISE, an electromagnetic-field solver based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Full-wave electromagnetics and nonlinear devices are simulated in a coupled self-consistent way using the lumped-element approach. The active region of the device is represented as a lumped element within the FDTD grid, while the packaging and waveguiding structures are modeled in their physical dimensions. For the nonlinear device, multidimensional semiconductor device simulation, as well as standard SPICE models, may be applied. Several examples show the capability of comprehensive analysis of microwave applications and the versatility in the simulation of the active elements. The coupling formalism is explained in detail, including time-step adjustment and biasing of active devices.
