Abstract:The complex environment of Underwater Acoustic (UWA) channels, characterized by multipath effects and long delay spreads, poses significant challenges in achieving efficient communication. The RAKE receiver, as an effective means to combat multipath effects, still does not fully exploit the sparsity of the UWA channel: the number of RAKE receiver's taps does not accurately correspond to the channel's multipath count and time delay. To address the issue of underutilizing the sparsity of UWA channels in conventional RAKE receiver, we propose a compressed sensing-based channel estimation approach for underwater spread spectrum communication RAKE receiver. By combining high-reconstruction-rate m-sequence observation matrix and the Sparsity Adaptive Matching Pursuit (SAMP) channel estimation method with low reconstruction time, we propose the m-SAMP algorithm, which can accurately acquire channel information, including multipath count and time delay. Based on the estimated channel information, we improve the structure of the RAKE receiver to align with the channel characteristics. This method ensures accurate correspondence between the RAKE receiver's taps and the number and positions of channel multipaths. Simulation results demonstrate that this method outperforms other receiver methods in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) performance.
