Abstract:In this work, a direct surrogate model from channel geometry to decision feedback equalization taps is constructed by four different machine learning methods, namely Polynomial Regression, Feed-forward Neural Network, Support Vector Regression, and Polynomial Chaos. They will be used to replace computational heavy simulations done by electromagnetic solver and channel simulation. Overall, all methods can offer 1% relative error rate of the prediction in this numerical example.

Abstract:A modified structure of decision feedback equalizer(DFE)is proposed in high-speed digital com-munication.Avoiding that the DFE feedforward filter will spread out the channel postcursor response,this struc-ture called partial feedback equalizer(PFE)can partially cancel the postcursor ISI prior to feedforward filtering.It enables the equalizer to get faster weight coefficients convergence than ordinary structure.The simulation results of the comparison between the modified structure and ordinary structure validate the good performance of the faster convergence in the condition of severely distorted channel.At last,we also introduce the applications of the sepa-rated structure in8-VSB receiver in High Definition Television(HDTV).

Abstract:In this paper, an error rotated decision feedback equalizer (DFE) based on the minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) criterion is proposed for Chinese DTTB Receiver. When the DFE is complex, the length of it is large and the convergence algorithm is least mean square (LMS), the residual carrier frequency error and the phase noise from tuner will seriously weaken the performance of DFE. As an adaptive filter, the DFE will respond to the variation of phase error. Furthermore, it is difficult to estimate the phase error when the other factors of channel distortion exist. The proposed DFE has properly solved these problems. Analysis and simulation show that not only phase noise can be estimated and nicely compensated but also DFE will not be interfered by the phase error. So the performance of DFE is improved.

Abstract:The bidirectional fractionally-spaced decision feedback equalizer (DFE) based on the soft outputs combination is proposed. Without any channel estimation, the fractionally-spaced DFE effectively compensates for any phase distortion and suppresses the error propagation. Compared to conventional methods, the soft outputs combining scheme involving the log likelihood ratios (LLRs) of two DFEs outputs running in opposite directions achieves much better performance in diversity gain. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the conventional bidirectional DFE by 2~4 dB over Proakis B channel.

Abstract:In recent years, single-carrier (SC) communication for intersymbol interference (ISI) channels has enjoyed a revived interest. Its principal advantage over the multi-carrier scheme is its lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In this paper, we propose a new fast iterative algorithm to obtain the optimal finite impulse response (FIR) minimum-mean-square-error decision feedback equalizer (MMSE-DFE) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) SC communication systems over ISI channels based on the QR decomposition of an augmented Toeplitz channel matrix. The proposed algorithm is not only computationally efficient but also very frugal in its memory usage. The algorithm applies to MIMO systems with any number of transmitting and receiving antennas, either balanced or unbalanced. The iterative nature of the proposed algorithm enables a flexible choice of $N_{f}$ , the length of the feedforward filter (FFF), which leads to a controllable trade-off between complexity and performance. A conversion from time-domain equalization (TDE) to a hybrid DFE (HDFE) can be used to achieve lower complexity when $N_{f}$ becomes large. Complexity analysis suggests a significant improvement over the prior art of TDE.

Abstract:Parameter design of Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE) in high rate DS-UWB system is involved with a challenge in the absence of practical optimized strategy, while the parameter group including, the feedforward filter (FFF) length N-f, the feedback filter (FBF) length N-b, and decision delay D greatly affects both performance and complexity. In this paper, an efficient method aiming at achieving quasi-optimum performance with the low hardware cost is developed. First, the complicated equivalent statistic channel before DFE is modeled and its length is derived from the introduced energy criteria by semi-analytical approach. Second, based on the obtained N-b, and Branch-Tree-Search(BTS) theorem, we introduce a new rule SIRDFE, to global search the optimized parameters. Numerical simulation results show that our strategy is both efficient and effective.

Abstract:Single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) offers a viable design alternative to the classic orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) technique. However, SC-FDE using a linear equalizer may suffer from serious performance deterioration for transmission over severely frequency-selective fading channels. An effective method of solving this problem is to introduce nonlinear decision feedback equalization (DFE) to SC-FDE. In this paper, a low-complexity iterative DFE operating in the frequency domain of single-carrier systems is proposed. Based on the minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) criterion, a simplified parameter estimation method is introduced to calculate the coefficients of the feedforward and feedback filters, which significantly reduces the implementation complexity of the equalizer. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed simplified design is similar to the traditional iterative block DFE under various multipath fading channels, but it imposes a much lower complexity than the latter.

Abstract:Least mean square (LMS) decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is preferred as an effective solution to coping with inter-symbol interference (ISI) for ATSC digital television (DTV) receivers. In DTV transmission environment, echo delay often covers several hundreds symbols, which leads to very large-scale equalizer. One consequence of the large-scale equalizer is the very slow convergence, which combined with error propagation, inherent drawback of DFE, seriously deteriorates the performance of the receivers, especially in severe channels. More working modes and corresponding robust control mechanism were given to help the equalizer converge to the stable state smoothly. Simulation results show that the improved equalizer can perform better, especially in the severe channels.

Abstract:A novel receiver structure for single carrier Digital Television Terrestrial Broadcasting (DTTB) system is presented. We suggested a combination of frequency domain DFE scheme with a MRC receiver diversity block, accordingly a frequency domain maximum ratio combing decision feedback filter (FD-MRC-DFE) structure is obtained. The overall system diagram is given and the detailed derivation process of theoretical optimal filter coefficients is also demonstrated. Field tests were carried out to validate the equalizer's performance. It shows that the proposed equalizer gained significant promotion; meanwhile it has practical value to apply such a scheme in reality receiver.

Abstract:To compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions and to track the characteristic of the time-varying channel in digital communication systems, a novel adaptive decision feedback equalizer (DFE) with the combination of finite impulse response (FIR) filter and functional link neural network (CFFLNNDFE) is introduced in this paper. This convex nonlinear combination results in improving the convergence speed while retaining the lower steady-state error at the cost of a small increasing computational burden. To further improve the performance of the nonlinear equalizer, we derive here a novel simplified modified normalized least mean square (SMNLMS) algorithm. Moreover, the convergence properties of the proposed algorithm are analyzed. Finally, computer simulation results which support analysis are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed equalizer over the functional link neural network (FLNN), radial basis function (RBF) neural network and linear equalizer with decision feedback (LMSDFE) for time-invariant and time-variant nonlinear channel models in digital communication systems.

Abstract:Decision feedback equalizer(DFE) is an efficient scheme for suppressing intersymbol interference(ISI) in vestigial sideband(VSB) based digital TV(DTV) receivers.However,it suffers from error propagation(EP).This paper considers the use of soft decisions in mitigating EP in a DFE.An optimized soft decision algorithm using the hyperbolic tangent function in the decision device is proposed to improve performance over reducing EP.Furthermore,in order to speed up the EP simulation process,a simple but effective modification is made in the feedback tap weight updating process.Computer simulation results show that the proposed soft decision algorithm nearly meets the EP performance of ideal DFE,which is far better in performance compared to the erasure algorithm.

Abstract:Inter-symbol interference(ISI) makes a bad effect for communication system, which will increase the bit-error-rate(BER). In this paper, Three iterative equalizers are firstly compared, include the minimum mean-square error (MMSE), the MMSE with decision feedback (MMSE-DFE) and the soft-feedback interference cancellation (SFIC) equalizer. To trade-off BER performance and complexity of three iterative equalizers, a low complexity hybrid iterative equalizer is proposed to improve performance in mitigating inter-symbol interference over high frequency(HF) which uses MMSE-DFE for the first iterative and uses SFIC the rest. Despite the low complexity, the proposed scheme achieves better performance than the conventional MMSE-DFE for 3.5dB.

Abstract:A turbo-type scheme that uses parallel concatenation and turbo block decision feedback equalization (TBDFE) is proposed to suppress linear intersymbol Interference. Two design methods are investigated based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. In the rst algorithm, the hard-decision data output from one detector are used as input of the feedback Iter in the other detector. In the second algorithm, the feedback Iter is directly designed from soft-decision data made by the coordinate detector. From performance evaluations we observed that the TBDFE can signi cantly outperform existing iterative block DFE (IBDFE) whether on a dispersive static channel or on a Rayleigh fading channel. Moreover, both the two design methods do not increase the computational complexity.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel frequency domain equalizer (FEQ) to eliminate inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. This FEQ employs the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion for getting an optimum FEQ structure based on minimizing interference. Simulation results show that the equalizer is capable of eliminating ISI and ICI effectively, and suppressing noise simultaneously.

Abstract:This paper presents a new equalizer structure named Delay-Matched Decision-Feedback Equalizer (DMDFE) which is an effective solution to the hardware implementation of time domain adaptive Decision-Feedback Equalizer (DFE) in single carrier modulated DTV system. The transposed structure combined with the conventional transversal filter is employed in DMDFE to reduce the ghost estimation delay of feedback filter in DFE. And the DMDFE provides a one-symbol period feedback ghost estimation which enables the new structure to have the same performance with ideal Least Mean Square (LMS) DFE. The DMDFE can cope with faster fading channel and longer post-echo than transposed DFE. Meanwhile the DMDFE saves more hardware resources than the transposed DFE.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel adaptive Interference Cancellation Decision Feedback Equalization algorithm based on Recursive Least Squares (RLS-IC-DFE) is proposed for Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) wireless communication systems under frequency selective with time variation environment. This algorithm changes the equalizer of each sub-stream to an equal new longer equalizer, and takes the sub-streams that have been detected as the new input parameters, then uses RLS algorithm to update the parameters of the new equalizer. Simulation results show that the new adaptive RLS-IC-DFE equalizer can adaptively track the variation of wireless channel and save the overhead of training sequence. At the same time, the proposed scheme can provide the better Symbol Error Rate (SER) performance than the existed RLS-DFE algorithm.

Abstract:Orthogonal signal-division multiplexing (OSDM) is one of the generalized modulation schemes that bring the gap between orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE). By performing encoding upon subvectors of each interleaved block, it enjoys a flexible resource management with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Meanwhile, the OSDM induces the intervector interference (IVI) inherently, which requires a more powerful equalizer. By deriving the input and output system model, this paper proposes a time domain soft decision feedback equalizer (SDFE) on per vector equalization with successful soft interference cancellation (SSIC). In addition, this paper takes the whole OSDM block to perform the channel encoding rather than on each vector of the OSDM. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SDFE with SSIC structure outperforms the conventional minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer and the block encoding (BE) scheme outperforms the vector encoding (VE) scheme, because theoretically the longer the encoded bit stream is, the more stable and more confident the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder will be.

Abstract:A single-carrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with frequency-selective channels suffers from the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and the co-channel interference (CCI). To eliminate both type of interference, we propose in this letter a hybrid two-stage decision-feedback equalizer (HTS-DFE), which performs the frequency-domain equalization (FIDE) in the first stage and the layered serial interference-cancellation (SIC) in the second stage. Since the decision-feedback (DF) or noise-prediction (NP) architecture can be employed in FIDE or SIC, the proposed equalizer actually can have four variations that achieve the same mean square error (MSE) under the assumption of perfect feedback. Further, we combine HTS-DFE with the decoded decision-feedback (131317) scheme to mitigate the error-propagation encountered in the practice. Simulation results confirm that the proposed HTS-DFE can outperform the existing equalizers significantly.

Abstract:Decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is an efficient and low-cost scheme for suppressing intersymbol interference (ISI) in vestigial sideband (VSB) based digital TV (DTV) receivers. However, it suffers from the phenomenon of error propagation (EP). This paper considers the method of constraining the tap weight, reducing the error and it′s propagation for mitigating the EP. Computer simulation results show that the proposed constraint algorithm reduces EP very significantly, and the performance of DFE is improved greatly.
