Abstract:11 trace elements (TE), especially Cu, Zn, Fe, and the Cu/Zn ratio were determined by particle induced X-rays emission (PIXE) method in 30 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Each Surrounding Liver Parenchyma (SLP) sample and the corresponding HCC one were selected from the same patient, irrespective of the diversity of biology samples. The result showed that the content of Zn, Fe, Co, Ca, Mn, Rb, Cl was significantly greater than that in SLP (P < 0.01), while no notable change has been observed in content of Cu (P = 0.9). But In relation to tumor size, the level of Cu present in small HCC (<35mm in diameter) was considerable greater than that in SLP (P < 0.4), which is concordant with Masaaki Ebara et al.’s result, while no statistic change has been detected in other elements such as Zn and Fe, relative to tumor size. It can be explained that the presence of Cu-MT may be related only to carcinogenesis of HCC but not to progression of HCC. The critical size of copper (Cu) accumulation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is determined as 35–40mm in diameter.
