Abstract:In this paper, we consider an inverse scattering problem for an obstacle D subset of R-3 with Robin boundary condition. A reconstruction procedure for identifying both the shape of the obstacle and the boundary impedance from the far-field pattern is proposed. Our method is to transform the far-field patterns into the near-field patterns, then construct an indicator function from which we can determine the boundary shape. Having known the shape of D, the boundary impedance is recovered by moment method for the known boundary.

Abstract:We consider an inverse scattering problem for multiple obstacles D = (N j=1Dj ‰ R3 with difierent types of boundary of Dj. By constructing an indicator function from the far-fleld pattern of scattered wave, we can flrstly determine the boundary location for all obstacles, then identify the boundary type for each obstacle, as well as the boundary impedance in case of Robin-type obstacles. The reconstruction procedures for these identiflcations are also given. Comparing with the existing probing method which is applied to identify one obstacle in generally, we should analyze the behavior of both the imaginary part and the real part of the indicator function so that we can identify the type of multiple obstacles.

Abstract:This paper proposes a radiation source reconstruction algorithm based on near-field scanning. The actual radiation source is equivalent to a dipole array, and parameters such as dipole position and moment are optimized using differential evolution algorithm. Finally, based on the constructed dipoles, the far-field of the actual radiation source is predicted by using the dipoles. Comparing the equivalent dipole and the actual radiation source with their 1-meter field, the accuracy of this method is verified.

Abstract:A regularized recursive linearization method is developed for a two-dimensional in-verse medium scattering problem that arises in near-field optics,which reconstructs thescatterer of an inhomogeneous medium deposited on a homogeneous substrate from dataaccessible through photon scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.In addition to theill-posedness of the inverse scattering problems,two difficulties arise from the layered back-ground medium and limited aperture data.Based on multiple frequency scattering data,the method starts from the Born approximation corresponding to the weak scattering ata low frequency,each update is obtained via recursive linearization with respect to thewavenumber by solving one forward problem and one adjoint problem of the Helmholtzequation.Numerical experiments are included to illustrate the feasibility of the proposedmethod.
Recovering a polyhedral obstacle by a few backscattering measurements

Abstract:We propose an inverse scattering scheme of recovering a polyhedral obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n=2,3$, by only a few high-frequency acoustic backscattering measurements. The obstacle could be sound-soft or sound-hard. It is shown that the modulus of the far-field pattern in the backscattering aperture possesses a certain local maximum behavior, from which one can determine the exterior normal directions of the front sides/faces. Then by using the phaseless backscattering data corresponding to a few incident plane waves with suitably chosen incident directions, one can determine the exterior unit normal vector of each side/face of the obstacle. After the determination of the exterior unit normals, the recovery is reduced to a finite-dimensional problem of determining a location point of the obstacle and the distance of each side/face away from the location point. For the latter reconstruction, we need make use of the far-field data with phases. Numerical experiments are also presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:We consider an inverse scattering problem for multiple obstacles D = ⋃ j = 1 N D j ⊂ R 3 D=\bigcup _{j=1}^ND_j\subset {R}^3 with different types of boundary for D j D_j . By constructing an indicator function from the far-field pattern of the scattered wave, we can firstly reconstruct the shape of all obstacles, then identify the type of boundary for each obstacle, as well as the boundary impedance in the case that obstacles have the Robin-type boundary condition. The novelty of our probe method compared with the existing probe method is that we succeeded in identifying the type of boundary condition for multiple obstacles by analyzing the behavior of both the imaginary part and the real part of the indicator function. The numerical realizations are given to show the performance of this inversion method.

Abstract:A novel regularized recursive linearization method is developed for a two-dimensional inverse medium scattering problem that arises in near-field optics, which reconstructs the scatterer of an inhomogeneous medium located on a substrate from data accessible through photon scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. Based on multiple frequency scattering data, the method starts from the Born approximation corresponding to weak scattering at a low frequency, and each update is obtained by continuation on the wavenumber from solutions of one forward problem and one adjoint problem of the Helmholtz equation.
A novel direct imaging method for passive inverse obstacle scattering problem

Abstract:This paper investigates the inverse scattering problem of recovering a sound-soft obstacle using passive measurements taken from randomly distributed point sources. The randomness introduced by these sources poses significant challenges, leading to the failure of classical direct sampling methods that rely on scattered field measurements. To address this issue, we introduce the Doubly Cross-Correlating Method (DCM), a novel direct imaging scheme that consists of two major steps. Initially, DCM creates a cross-correlation between two passive measurements. This specially designed cross-correlation effectively handles the uncontrollability of incident sources and connects to the active scattering model via the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff identity. Subsequently, this cross-correlation is used to create a correlation-based imaging function that can qualitatively identify the obstacle. The stability and resolution of DCM are theoretically analyzed. Extensive numerical examples, including scenarios with two closely positioned obstacles and multiscale obstacles, demonstrate that DCM is computationally efficient, stable, and fast.

Abstract:Inverse scattering problems suffer from ill-posedness and ill-conditioning, necessitating the use of regularization methods to get meaningful solutions. Commonly used regularizations are L2 norm based, but these generate over-smooth solutions. We propose a regularization method using both the L1 and L2 norms to obtain sharp object boundaries, while also achieving good interior reconstruction of the object permittivity. Knowledge about the permittivity can also be used as a priori information. The applicability of the method is demonstrated on synthetically generated data for two-dimensional (2-D) microwave imaging using the Born-iterative method (BIM). The optimization routine systematically estimates all parameters, while minimizing the cost function. Different objects chosen to represent realistic features have been considered to evaluate the performance. The reconstructed images indicate that the method can produce accurate object localization, shape identification, and good permittivity estimation.

Abstract:We present a multiplicative-regularized subspace-based optimization method for solving inverse scattering problems where scatterers are piecewise homogeneous. The proposed inversion algorithm not only has the advantages of low computational complexity and better stability against noise, but also exhibits the edge-preserving ability. The extension of the method to the twofold subspace-based optimization method is discussed. Numerical simulations validate the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The problem of determining the shape of an object from knowledge of the far-field of a single incident wave in two-dimensional elasticity was considered. We applied an iterative hybrid method to tackle this problem. An advantage of this method is that it does not need a forward solver, and therefore, the exact boundary condition is not essential. By deriving the Fréchet derivatives of two boundary operators, we established reconstruction algorithms for objects with Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin boundary conditions; by introducing a general boundary condition, we also established the reconstruction algorithm for objects with unknown physical properties. Numerical experiments showed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering problem by an unbounded rough surface. A direct imaging method is proposed to reconstruct the rough surface from the scattered near-field Cauchy data generating by point sources and measured on a horizontal straight line segment at a finite distance above the rough surface. Theoretical analysis of the imaging algorithm is given for the case of a penetrable rough surface, but the imaging algorithm also works for impenetrable surfaces with Dirichlet or impedance boundary conditions. Numerical experiments are presented to show that the direct imaging algorithm is fast, accurate and very robust with respect to noise in the data.

Abstract:We consider the problem of reconstructing the shape of an impenetrable sound-soft obstacle from scattering measurements. The input data is assumed to be the far-field pattern generated when a plane wave impinges on an unknown obstacle from one or more directions and at one or more frequencies. It is well known that this inverse scattering problem is both ill posed and nonlinear. It is common practice to overcome the ill posedness through the use of a penalty method or Tikhonov regularization. Here, we present a more physical regularization, based simply on restricting the unknown boundary to be band-limited in a suitable sense. To overcome the nonlinearity of the problem, we use a variant of Newton's method. When multiple frequency data is available, we supplement Newton's method with the recursive linearization approach due to Chen. During the course of solving the inverse problem, we need to compute the solution to a large number of forward scattering problems. For this, we use high-order accurate integral equation discretizations, coupled with fast direct solvers when the problem is sufficiently large.

Jointly determining the point sources and obstacle from Cauchy data

Abstract:A numerical method is developed for recovering both the source locations and the obstacle from the scattered Cauchy data of the time-harmonic acoustic field. First of all, the incident and scattered components are decomposed from the coupled Cauchy data by the representation of the single-layer potentials and the solution to the resulting linear integral system. As a consequence of this decomposition, the original problem of joint inversion is reformulated into two decoupled subproblems: an inverse source problem and an inverse obstacle scattering problem. Then, two sampling-type schemes are proposed to recover the shape of the obstacle and the source locations, respectively. The sampling methods rely on the specific indicator functions defined on target-oriented probing domains of circular shape. The error estimates of the decoupling procedure are established and the asymptotic behaviors of the indicator functions are analyzed. Extensive numerical experiments are also conducted to verify the performance of the sampling schemes.

Solving Inverse Obstacle Scattering Problem with Latent Surface Representations

Abstract:We propose a novel iterative numerical method to solve the three-dimensional inverse obstacle scattering problem of recovering the shape of the obstacle from far-field measurements. To address the inherent ill-posed nature of the inverse problem, we advocate the use of a trained latent representation of surfaces as the generative prior. This prior enjoys excellent expressivity within the given class of shapes, and meanwhile, the latent dimensionality is low, which greatly facilitates the computation. Thus, the admissible manifold of surfaces is realistic and the resulting optimization problem is less ill-posed. We employ the shape derivative to evolve the latent surface representation, by minimizing the loss, and we provide a local convergence analysis of a gradient descent type algorithm to a stationary point of the loss. We present several numerical examples, including also backscattered and phaseless data, to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:A rigorous mathematical model and an efficient computational method are proposed to solving the inverse elastic surface scattering problem which arises from the near-field imaging of periodic structures. We demonstrate how an enhanced resolution can be achieved by using more easily measurable far-field data. The surface is assumed to be a small and smooth perturbation of an elastically rigid plane. By placing a rectangular slab of a homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium with larger mass density above the surface, more propagating wave modes can be utilized from the far-field data which contributes to the reconstruction resolution. Requiring only a single illumination, the method begins with the far-to-near (FtN) field data conversion and utilizes the transformed field expansion to derive an analytic solution for the direct problem, which leads to an explicit inversion formula for the inverse problem. Moreover, a nonlinear correction scheme is developed to improve the accuracy of the reconstruction. Results show that the proposed method is capable of stably reconstructing surfaces with resolution controlled by the slab's density.

Inverse elastic scattering problems with phaseless far field data

Abstract:This paper is concerned with uniqueness, phase retrieval and shape reconstruction methods for inverse elastic scattering problems with phaseless far field data. Systematically, we study two basic models, i.e., inverse scattering of plane waves by rigid bodies and inverse scattering of sources with compact support. For both models, we show that the location of the objects can not be uniquely recovered by the data. To solve this problem, we consider simultaneously the incident point sources with one fixed source point and at most three scattering strengths. We then establish some uniqueness results for source scattering problem with multi-frequency phaseless far field data. Furthermore, a fast and stable phase retrieval approach is proposed based on a simple geometric result which provides a stable reconstruction of a point in the plane from three distances to given points. Difficulties arise for inverse scattering by rigid bodies due to the additional unknown far field pattern of the point sources. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce an artificial rigid body into the system and show that the underlying rigid bodies can be uniquely determined by the corresponding phaseless far field data at a fixed frequency. Noting that the far field pattern of the scattered field corresponding to point sources is very small if the source point is far away from the scatterers, we propose an appropriate phase retrieval method for obstacle scattering problems, without using the artificial rigid body. Finally, we propose several sampling methods for shape reconstruction with phaseless far field data. Extended numerical examples in two dimensions are conducted with noisy data, and the results further verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed phase retrieval techniques and sampling methods.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a nonlinear imaging problem, which aims to reconstruct a locally perturbed, perfectly reflecting, infinite plane from intensity-only (or phaseless) far-field or near-field data. A recursive Newton iteration algorithm in frequencies is developed to reconstruct the locally rough surface from multi-frequency intensity-only far-field or near-field data, where the fast integral equation solver developed in [39] is used to solve the direct scattering problem in each iteration. For the case with far-field data, a main feature of our work is that the incident field is taken as a superposition of two plane waves with different directions rather than one plane wave, so the location and shape of the local perturbation of the infinite plane can be reconstructed simultaneously from intensity-only far-field data with multiple wave numbers. This is different from previous work on inverse scattering from phaseless far-field data, where only the shape reconstruction was considered due to the translation invariance property of the phaseless far-field pattern corresponding to one plane wave as the incident field. Finally, numerical examples are carried out to demonstrate that our reconstruction algorithm is stable and accurate even for the case of multiple-scale profiles.

Regularized Factorization Method for a perturbed positive compact operator applied to inverse scattering

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a regularization strategy for the factorization method when there is noise added to the data operator. The factorization method is a qualitative method used in shape reconstruction problems. These methods are advantageous to use due to the fact that they are computationally simple and require little a priori knowledge of the object one wishes to reconstruct. The main focus of this paper is to prove that the regularization strategy presented here produces stable reconstructions. We will show this is the case analytically and numerically for the inverse shape problem of recovering an isotropic scatterer with a conductive boundary condition. We also provide a strategy for picking the regularization parameter with respect to the noise level. Numerical examples are given for a scatterer in 2 dimensions.
