Abstract:Low-visibility events (LVEs) are the damaging weathers that cause harm even disasters to human, closely related to anthropogenic pollution, and have negative impacts on traffic, air quality, human health, environment and etc. The 2-months wintertime continuous measurements conducted in Chongming Island of Shanghai were employed to examine LVEs on hour time scale and characterize their evolution and key drivers, particularly of fog-haze transformation. LVEs account for 38% of hours during the entire campaign, of which mist 14%, haze 6% and fog 5%, surprisingly fog-haze coexistence as high as about 13%. LVEs generally interdepend and transform each other, and their formation and evolution are the results of the synergy impacts of meteorological conditions and particulate matter. Fog and mist mostly occur from midnight to early morning, whereas haze mostly occurs in the daytime. Fog turning into haze often occurs after sunrise, while haze turning into fog often occurs after sunset. Temperature difference is the most critical meteorological driving factor of LVEs evolution. The radiative cooling on surface is more likely to improve ambient saturation than humidifying in the short term to promote fog and mist formation. During fog and mist events, under superior humidity conditions, particles exhibit relatively lower hygroscopicity and intense internal mixing due to fog droplet removal and aerosol heterogeneous and aqueous reactions. High CCN concentration accelerates the increase of fog droplet number and liquid water content. Overall, the conditions of high humidity and particle loadings are beneficial to conduce LVEs, while the conditions of sufficient water vapor at low particle level and sufficient particles at low humidity level can also trigger LVEs. This study provides insights into LVEs classification, evolution scheme and aerosol roles from a micro perspective, and the results will be helpful to improve the accuracy of refined forecast to local radiative fog and other LVEs.
