Abstract:In the last two decades, regulations governing the properties of gasoline have evolved rapidly to reduce undesirable emissions from internal combustion engines. These regulations address a number of gasoline properties, especially levels of sulfur and olefins. To meet the ultra-low vehicle emission specifications, the automotive industry has started developing engines using sulfur-free gasoline, as outlined in the Worldwide Fuel Charter. Olefins in FCC gasoline are concentrated in light catalytic naphtha, while sulfurs are concentrated in heavy catalytic naphtha. A discussion covers olefins-to-aromatic-and-alkylate technology, which significantly reduces the amount of sulfur and olefins in full-range FCC gasoline, resulting in higher gasoline yields and low road octane; R&D concepts; and pilot plant results.
