Abstract:Aim: Genetic factor is an important influential factor for determining bone mass and bone metabolism. Apolipoprotein E (Apo E) gene is one of candidate genes contributing to osteoporosis. The objective of this study was to explore the correlation between polymorphism and bone mineral density (BMD) of the Apo E gene. Methods: A total of 177 healthy Han volunteers over 60 years old living in Shenyang were selected. Apo E gene was measured by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RELP). BMD (g/cm2) at hip was measured by dual-energy X-ray(DPX-L) absorption apparatus (Lunar, USA). Results: The Apo E gene phenotype in the population was E2/3: 14.1%, E3/3.69.5%, E4/3:15.8%, E4/4: 0.6%, while E2/2 and E4/2 was not found. The Apo E all lelomorph frequencies were 7.1% for E2, 84.5% for E3, 8.5% for E4. These people were divided into two categories: the presence Apo E 4 group (E4/3 and E4/4, n = 29) and the absence Apo E4 group (E3/2 and E3/3, n = 148). There were no difference in age, body mass, body height, and body mass index(BMI) between the two categories. And there was no significant difference of the BMD in the femoral neck, tuverosity and Ward areas by statistical analysis. Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between Apo E genotype and BMD of hip.
