Abstract: AIM: To carry out a primary study on testing the rigidity changes of spinal internal fixation implants on a fatigue model. METHODS:Cylinder steal clips with balance bars welded to their bilaterals were used to serve the fixation of vertebral specimens. The bottom of the upper clip was shaped into an eccentric axis for providing the loading. A spring mechanical device fixed on the balance bars was installed for simulating the force provided by the erector spinae.A total of 10 vertebral specimens were collected in this study.Segments of L1~ S2 were dissected for preparing the L3 injury models.Reduction fixation(RF)and modified Edwards system (MES) were implanted by clinical operational technique.10 000 times repeated loading of(440± 165) N were added on the specimens at a frequency of 0.5 Hz by a SANS material testing machine. Observation indexes were the initial status, rigidity changes after 1 500 and 10 000 times of loading in both the groups, and displacement of the lower intervertebral disk. RESULTS: Both the RF and MES groups had an increased rigidity before fatigue.Even after 1 500 and 10 000 cycles of loading, rigidity in RF group was still well maintained. There existed a strikingly different rigidity between RF group and the decreased MES group( t=2.702, P< 0.05.No apparent difference was observed in the displacement of lower intervertebral disk from both the fatigued groups( t=0.731,P >0.05;t=0.894,P >0.05) . CONCLUSION:Spinal fatigue models are suitable for testing mechanical performance of various internal fixations.
