Abstract:A simple irreversible surface reaction model first introduced by Ziff, Gulari and Barshad has been studied using Monte Carlo simulation. We determine the static critical exponents accurately which are in excellent agreement with those of directed percolation universality class.

Abstract:Recently, Newman and Swift[T. J. Newman and M. R. Swift, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 2261 (1997)] made an interesting suggestion that the strong-coupling exponents of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation may not be universal, but rather depend on the precise form of the noise distribution. We show here that the decrease of surface roughness exponents they observed can be attributed to a percolative effect.

Abstract:The non-equilibrium phase transitions of the fullyfrustrated (f = 1/2) square lattice Coulomb gas (CG) modeldriven by external electrical fields are studied in the frameworkof the short-time dynamic scaling approach. The criticaltemperature Tc, the static and dynamic critical exponents2β/ν, ν, and z are obtained for several smalldriving fields. The results show that Tc decreases with theincrease of electric field, and 2β/ν and z arestrongly dependent on the external electric field. Interestingly,contrary to the equilibrium case, in the presence of smallelectric field, the calculated exponent ν is close to that inpure 2D Ising model, which provides numerical evidence thatexternal electric field may change the universality class of thef = 1/2 CG system.

Abstract:We investigate the influence of the boundary condition on the short-time dynamic behaviour of the Ising-like phase transition in square-lattice fully frustrated (FF) XY models with periodic and fluctuating twist boundary conditions. The transition temperature Tc and the dynamic and static critical exponents z, 2β/ν and ν are estimated for both cases using short-time dynamic scaling analysis. The results show that both models have the same critical exponents, indicating that the boundary condition has nearly no effect on the short-time dynamic behaviour of the FFXY model.

Abstract:In this paper,a renormalization group scheme within the framework of the mean field theory is used to investigate the critical behavior at the surface of a semi-infinite Ising system with mixed spins,i.e.,S=1 at the surface and σ=1/2 in the bulk.The effects of the random field and amorphism on the surface phase diagrams are obtained and discussed.The numerical results show that the surface tricritical points and reentrant phenomena exist due to the competition between the surface random field and certain magnitude of surface amorphization.

Abstract:With Monte Carlo simulations, we study the dynamic relaxation at perfect and imperfect surfaces of the three-dimensional Ising model with an ordered initial state. The time evolution of the surface magnetization, the line magnetization of the defect line, and the corresponding susceptibilities and second cumulants is carefully examined. Universal dynamic scaling forms including a dynamic crossover scaling form are identified at the ordinary, special, and surface phase transitions. The critical exponents beta(1) of the surface magnetization and beta(2) of the line magnetization are extracted. The impact of the defect line on the universality classes is investigated.

Abstract:Langevin dynamics simulations are used to analyze the static and dynamic properties of an XY model adapted to dimers forming on Si(001) surfaces. The numerics utilise high-performance parallel computation methods on GPUs. The static exponent $\nu$ of the symmetry-broken XY model is determined to $\nu = 1.04$. The dynamic critical exponent $z$ is determined to $z=2.13$ and, together with $\nu$, shows the behavior of the Ising universality class. For time-dependent temperatures, we observe frozen domains and compare their size distribution with predictions from Kibble-Zurek theory. We determine a significantly larger quench exponent that shows little dependence on the damping or the symmetry-breaking field.

Abstract:Dynamic relaxation of the XY model and fully frustrated XY model quenched from an initial ordered state to the critical temperature or below is investigated with Monte Carlo methods. Universal power law scaling behaviour is observed. The dynamic critical exponent $z$ and the static exponent $\eta$ are extracted from the time-dependent Binder cumulant and magnetization. The results are competitive to those measured with traditional methods.

Abstract:The critical dynamics of Model H with a conserved order parameter coupled to a transverse momentum density which describes the gas-liquid or binary-fluid transitions is investigated within the functional renormalization group approach formulated on the closed time path. According to the dynamic scaling analysis, Model H and QCD critical end point belong to the same dynamic universality class in the critical region. The higher-order correction of the transport coefficient $\bar\lambda$ and shear viscosity $\bar\eta$ arising from mode-couplings are obtained by calculating the two-point correlation functions. The flow equation of a dimensionless coupling constant for nondissipative interactions is derived to look for the fixed-point solution of the system. The scaling relation between the critical exponent of the transport coefficient and that of the shear viscosity is estimated. Finally, the dynamic critical exponent $z$ is obtained as a function of the spatial dimension $d$.

Critical fluid dynamics in two and three dimensions

Abstract:We describe a numerical method for simulating stochastic fluid dynamics near a critical point in the Ising universality class. This theory is known as model H, and is expected to govern the non-equilibrium dynamics of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) near a possible critical endpoint of the phase transition between a hadron liquid and the quark-gluon plasma. The numerical algorithm is based on a Metropolis scheme, and automatically ensures that the distribution function of the hydrodynamic variables in equilibrium is independent of the transport coefficients and only governed by the microscopic free energy. We verify dynamic scaling near the critical point of a two and three-dimensional fluid and extract the associated critical exponent $z$. We find $z\simeq 3$ in three dimensions, and $z\simeq 2$ for a two-dimensional fluid. In a finite system, we observe a crossover between the mean field value $z=4$ and the true critical exponent $z\simeq 3$ ($z \simeq 2$ in $d=2$). This crossover is governed by the values of the correlation length and the renormalized shear viscosity.

Classical-quantum correspondence of special and extraordinary-log criticality: Villain's bridge

Abstract:There has been much recent progress on exotic surface critical behavior, yet the classical-quantum correspondence of special and extraordinary-log criticality remains largely unclear. Employing worm Monte Carlo simulations, we explore the surface criticality at an emergent superfluid-Mott insulator critical point in the Villain representation, which is believed to connect classical and quantum O(2) critical systems. We observe a special transition with the thermal and magnetic renormalization exponents $y_t=0.58(1)$ and $y_h=1.690(1)$ respectively, which are close to recent estimates from models with discrete spin variables. The existence of extraordinary-log universality is evidenced by the critical exponent $\hat{q}=0.58(2)$ from two-point correlation and the renormalization-group parameter $\alpha=0.28(1)$ from superfluid stiffness, which obey the scaling relation of extraordinary-log critical theory and recover the logarithmic finite-size scaling of critical superfluid stiffness in open-edge quantum Bose-Hubbard model. Our results bridge recent observations of surface critical behavior in the classical statistical mechanical models [Parisen Toldin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 135701 (2021); Hu $et$ $al.$, $ibid.$ 127, 120603 (2021); Parisen Toldin $et$ $al.$, $ibid.$ 128, 215701 (2022)] and the open-edge quantum Bose-Hubbard model [Sun $et$ $al.$, Phys. Rev. B 106, 224502 (2022)].

Abstract:We present simulations of stochastic fluid dynamics in the vicinity of a critical endpoint belonging to the universality class of the Ising model. This study is motivated by the challenge of modeling the dynamics of critical fluctuations near a conjectured critical endpoint in the phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We focus on the interaction of shear modes with a conserved scalar density, which is known as model H. We show that the observed dynamical scaling behavior depends on the correlation length and the shear viscosity of the fluid. As the correlation length is increased or the viscosity is decreased we observe a cross-over from the dynamical exponent of critical diffusion, $z\simeq 4$, to the expected scaling exponent of model H, $z\simeq 3$. We use our method to investigate time-dependent correlation function of non-Gaussian moments $M^n(t)$ of the order parameter. We find that the relaxation time depends in non-trivial manner on the power $n$.

A Monte Carlo study for the universality in short-time critical dynamics

Abstract:We have studied the finite size scaling and universality of the spin models on the two-dimensional triangle lattice by using the Monte Carlo simulations for the short-time critical dynamics. Our investigation shows that the power-law behavior of the magnetization, the second magnetic moment and the auto-correlation, as well as their finite size scaling relations, can be used to estimate the critical exponents θ, z and β/v. The results of θ = 0.191(2), z = 2.153(2) and 2β/v = 0.252(2) for Ising model, and θ = 0.076(1), z = 2.191(1) and 2β/v = 0.266(2) for Potts model are identical with those for the corresponding models on the square lattice. So the universality proposal in the short-time critical dynamics is verified numerically.
Fractal Quantum Phase Transitions: Critical Phenomena Beyond Renormalization

Abstract:We identify a quantum critical point with fractal symmetry whose effective theory eludes the renormalization group framework. We consider the Newman-Moore model with three-body interaction subjected to an external transverse field, which exhibits a Kramers-Wannier type self-duality and a fractal $Z_2$ symmetry with Ising charge conserved on a fractal subset of sites, i.e., on Sierpinski gaskets. Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we identify a continuous quantum phase transition between a phase with spontaneous fractal symmetry breaking and a paramagnetic phase. This phase transition is characterized by the emergence of a fractal scaling dimension $d=\ln(3)/\ln(2)$ at the quantum critical point, where the power-law exponent of the correlation function is related to the fractal dimension of the Sierpinski triangle. We develop a field theory to elucidate such quantum criticality and denote the fractal scaling as a subsequence of UV-IR mixing, where the low energy modes at the critical point are manipulated by short-wavelength physics due to the fractal symmetry.

Universal critical dynamics near the chiral phase transition and the QCD critical point

Abstract:We use a novel real-time formulation of the functional renormalization group (FRG) for dynamical systems with reversible mode couplings to study Model H, the conjectured dynamic universality class of the QCD critical point. We emphasize the structural similarities with Model G, conjectured to be the dynamic universality class of the chiral phase transition in the limit of two massless quark flavors. Importantly, our formulation of the real-time FRG preserves all relevant symmetries throughout the FRG flow which, e.g., guarantees the non-renormalization of the reversible mode couplings, as but one exact result. We derive non-perturbative RG flow equations for the kinetic coefficients of both, Model G and H, in parallel, and discuss commonalities and differences in the resulting fixed-point structure and dynamic critical exponents, such as weak-scaling relations which hold in either case versus the characteristic strong scaling of Model G which is absent in Model H.

Abstract:We study the critical behaviors of systems undergoing fractal time processes above the upper critical dimension. We derive a set of novel critical exponents, irrespective of the order of the fractional time derivative or the particular form of interaction in the Hamiltonian. For fractal time processes, we not only discover new universality classes with a dimensional constant but also decompose the dangerous irrelevant variables to obtain corrections for critical dynamic behavior and static critical properties. This contrasts with the traditional theory of critical phenomena, which posits that static critical exponents are unrelated to the dynamical processes. Simulations of the Landau–Ginzburg model for fractal time processes and the Ising model with temporal long-range interactions both show good agreement with our set of critical exponents, verifying its universality. The discovery of this new universality class provides a method for examining whether a system is undergoing a fractal time process near the critical point.

Abstract:Employing the self-learning quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, we investigate the frustrated transverse-field triangle-lattice Ising model coupled to a Fermi surface. Without fermions, the spin degrees of freedom undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition between paramagnetic and clock-ordered phases. This quantum critical point (QCP) has an emergent U(1) symmetry and thus belongs to the (2+1)D XY universality class. In the presence of fermions, spin fluctuations introduce effective interactions among fermions and distort the bare Fermi surface towards an interacting one with hot spots and Fermi pockets. Near the QCP, non-Fermi-liquid behavior are observed at the hot spots, and the QCP is rendered into a different universality with Hertz-Millis type exponents. The detailed properties of this QCP and possibly related experimental systems are also discussed.

Abstract:It is very interesting that all holographic superconductors, such as s-wave, p-wave and d-wave holographic superconductors, show the universal mean-field critical exponent 1/2 at the critical temperature, just like Gindzburg-Landau (G-L) theory for second order phase transitions. Now it is believed that the universal critical exponents appear because the dual gravity theory is classic in the large N limit. However, even in the large N limit there is an exception called “non-mean-field theory”: an extension of the s-wave model with a cubic term of the charged scalar field shows a different critical exponent 1. In this paper, we try to use analytical methods to obtain the critical exponents for these models to see how the properties of the gravity action decides the appearance of the mean-field behaviors. It will be seen that just like the G-L theory, it is the fundamental symmetries rather than the detailed parameters of the bulk theory that lead to the universal properties of the holographic superconducting phase transition. The feasibility of the called “non-mean-field theory” is also discussed.
