Abstract:The problem of nonlinear magnetoelastic interactions of a circular cylindrical thin shell experiencing moderately large deflections is modeled and investigated. The shell is assumed to be perfectly electroconductive and immersed in an applied magnetic field and carrying electrical current. The mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian description is adopted. Consistent with the von Karman's strain approximation, the formulation is significantly simplified. Explicit representation of magnetoelastic loads including the Lorentz forces, Maxwell's stress jumps and of the induced magnetic fields outside the shell in case of a shell's cross section are obtained and the influence of geometric nonlinearity on the induced magnetic fields outside the shell is discussed. I. Introduction Historically, the interest on problems of vibration and stability of current carrying thin walled structures grew out of studying instabilities in plasma physics and magnetic levitation. Superconductors can carry very high current and find use in plasma confinement for thermonuclear power generation and in magnetic levitation for high speed transportation. Such works was first reported in (1), in which they concluded that a flexible rod carrying current is inherently unstable. Later by different assumption these problem was studied by many authors (2-12). The associated techniques have been under rapid transition and development because of the their extensive practical applications in aerospace engineering, geophysics, optics, acoustics, etc. A comprehensive review of the earlier contributions to the subject can be found in (2, 13-20). Notably, circular cylindrical shells immersed in a magnetic field was considered by many authors (2, 21-24), while (25) investigated more complicate problems of conical shells in magnetic fields. It is noted that in (2, 21-24), only linear vibration of cylindrical shells, while in (25), only the interaction between the structure and magnetic filed within the structure is considered. The interaction between the structure and immersing magnetic filed out of the structure is omitted. It is further noted that when the structures interact with multiple magnetic fields, (e.g., current carrying cylindrical shell in an applied magnetic field), (26) reported that new physical effect will emerge. In the present paper, a circular cylindrical shell carrying electrical current and immersed in a magnetic field is considered. The shell undergoes geometrical nonlinear deformations. The effect of the geometrical nonlinear deformations on the vibration behavior will be modeled and investigated.
