Abstract:The effects of the depth parameter on the velocity-amplitude relation, wave profile of a single soliton and the interaction of two solitons are studied for the integrable Boussinesq model proposed by Zhang et al. (2004). By comparing with the numerical solutions of the full water wave problem governed by the Euler equations, it is found that the Boussinesq model with depth parameter b =0.207 gives a good prediction on the property of a single soliton and the interaction of solitons of small amplitude up to intermediate amplitude, such as 0.4, for both head-on and overtaking collisions.

Abstract:The nonlinear variants of the generalized Boussinesq water equations with positive and negative exponents are studied in this paper. The analytic expressions of the compactons, solitons, solitary patterns, and periodic solutions for the equations are obtained by using a technique based on the reduction of order of differential equations. It is shown that the nonlinear variants, or nonlinear variants together with the wave numbers, directly lead to the qualitative change in the physical structures of the solutions.

All possible phase portraits in the parameter plane for the travelling wavesystems are obtained. Abstract:An extended Boussinesq equation that models weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive waves on a uniform layer of water is studied in this paper. The results show that the equation is not Painleve-integrable in general. Some particular exact travelling wave solutions are obtained by using a function expansion method. An approximate solitary wave solution with physical significance is obtained by using a perturbation method. We find that the extended Boussinesq equation with a depth parameter of 1/root 2 is able to match the Laitone's (1960) second order solitary wave solution of the Euler equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a Boussinesq equation containing weak backward diffusion, delay in the convection term, dissipation and Marangoni effect. By applying geometric singular perturbation theory, a locally invariant manifold diffeomorphic to the critical manifold is established. For Boussinesq equation with delay and weak backward diffusion, the monotonicity of ratio of Abelian integrals is analyzed by utilizing the Picard–Fuchs equation. The conditions on existence of a unique periodic wave and solitary waves are obtained as well as the bound of wave speed. For Boussinesq equation with weak backward diffusion, dissipation and Marangoni effect, the corresponding Melnikov function containing three generic elements is given. The parametric conditions on existence of a unique and two periodic waves are derived respectively. Furthermore, the existence of a unique solitary wave is proved under some parametric conditions.

Abstract:We prove the existence on long time scales of the solutions to the Cauchy problem for a version of weakly transverse Boussinesq systems arising in the modeling of surface water waves. This system is much more complicated than the isotropic Boussinesq systems because dispersion is only present in the x-direction, leading to anisotropic eigenvalues in the linearized system. This anisotropic character leads to loss of y-derivatives for the solutions. To overcome this main difficulty our strategy is to symmetrize the system by introducing suitable good unknowns in the sense of [3].

Abstract:A two-dimensional, depth-integrated model proposed by Lynett and Liu (2002) was checked carefully, and several misprints in the model were corrected after detailed examination on both the theory and the numerical program. Several comparisons were made on wave profile, system energy and maximum wave amplitude. It is noted that the modified model can simulate the propagation of the internal solitary waves over variable bathymetry more reasonably to a certain degree, and the wave profiles obtained based on the modified model can better fit the experiment data reported by Helfrich (1992) than those from original model.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and study integrable discrete systems related to the classical Boussinesq system. Based on elementary and binary Darboux transformations and associated Backlund transformations, both full-discrete systems and semi-discrete systems are constructed. The discrete systems obtained from elementary Darboux transformation are shown to be the discrete systems of relativistic Toda lattice type appeared in the work of Suris (1997) and the ones from binary Darboux transformations are two-component extensions of the lattice potential KdV equation and Kac-van Moerbeke equation. For these discrete systems, their different continuum limits, various interesting reductions and Darboux-Backlund transformations are considered. Some solutions such as discrete resonant solitons are also presented.

Abstract:A semidiscrete Boussinesq system has been introduced by the means of recombination flows from a 4×4 spectral problem. We construct the Darboux transformation and explicit solutions for the semidiscrete Boussinesq system. We can find that the 1-fold Darboux-transformation solution of the system possesses more than one traveling waves. Especially, one of solutions comes into being two solitary waves after a period of time, which means that properties of solutions to semidiscrete integrable systems are richer than the ones in continuous integrable systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the generalized Boussinesq equation as a model for the water wave problem with surface tension. Initially, we investigate the initial value problem within Sobolev spaces, deriving conditions under which solutions are either global or experience blow-up in time. Subsequently, we extend our analysis to Bessel potential and modulation spaces, determining the asymptotic behavior of solutions. We establish the non-existence of solitary waves for certain parameters using Pohozaev-type identities. Additionally, we numerically generate solitary wave solutions of the generalized Boussinesq equation through the Petviashvili iteration method. To further examine the time evolution of solutions, we propose employing the Fourier pseudo-spectral numerical method. Our investigation extends to the gap interval, where neither global existence nor blow-up results have been theoretically established. We find that our numerical results effectively fill these gaps, supplementing the theoretical findings.

Abstract:The possible solitary wave solutions for a general Boussinesq (GBQ) type fluid model are studied analytically. After proving the non-Painlevé integrability of the model, the first type of exact explicit travelling solitary wave with a special velocity selection is found by the truncated Painlevé expansion. The general solitary waves with different travelling velocities can be studied by casting the problems to the Newtonian quasi-particles moving in some proper one dimensional potential fields. For some special velocity selections, the solitary waves possess different shapes, say, the left moving solitary waves may possess different shapes and/or amplitudes with those of the right moving solitons. For some other velocities, the solitary waves are completely prohibited. There are three types of GBQ systems (GBQSs) according to the different selections of the model parameters. For the first type of GBQS, both the faster moving and lower moving solitary waves allowed but the solitary waves with“middle” velocities are prohibit. For the second type of GBQS all the slower moving solitary waves are completely prohibit while for the third type of GBQS only the slower moving solitary waves are allowed. Only the solitary waves with the almost unit velocities meet the weak non-linearity conditions.
A New Approach to High-Order Boussinesq-Type Equations with Ambient Currents

Abstract:A new approach to high-order Boussinesq-type equations with ambient currents is presented. The current velocity is assumed to be uniform over depth and of the same magnitude as the shallow water wave celerity. The wave velocity field is expressed in terms of the horizontal and vertical wave velocity components at air arbitrary water depth level. Linear operators are introduced to improve the accuracy of the kinematic condition at the sea bottom. The dynamic and kinematic conditions at the free surface are expressed in terms of wave velocity variables defined directly on the free surface. The new equations provide high accuracy of linear properties as well as nonlinear properties from shallow to deep water, and extend the applicable range of relative water depth in the case of opposing currents.

Abstract:Zufiria's higher-order Boussinesq model for water waves is reappraised. Heretofore solutions of this equation have been obtained numerically. Firstly, we show that in fact this model has exact solutions. An algebraic method is applied to construct solitary wave solutions, doubly-periodic (cnoidal-type) wave solutions and a range of other solutions of physical interest. Secondly, we show that this model has a nice property which leads to a global energy type argument for linear stability of the solitary waves.

Abstract:Combining mesh-less finite difference method and least square approximation, a new numerical model is developed for highly dispersive and fully nonlinear Boussinesq equations in two horizontal dimensions. The 3rd order truncated series solution of the Laplace equation is employed to approximate the velocity distribution in the vertical plane. The linear properties of the wave model are discussed with Fourier analysis. It is shown that the model is suitable to predict the propagation of water waves at the range of 0 ≤ kh ≤ 10 for both the linear dispersion characteristic and shoaling gradient. Preliminary verifications of the numerical model are given for nonlinear wave shoaling problems, wave run-up on conical island. The numerical results agree well with the experimental data available in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper a three-parameter family of Boussinesq systems is studied. The systems have been proposed as models of the propagation of long internal waves along the interface of a two-layer system of fluids with rigid-lid condition for the upper layer and under a Boussinesq regime for the flow in both layers. We first present some theoretical properties of well-posedness, conservation laws and Hamiltonian structure of the systems. Then the corresponding periodic initial-value problem is discretized in space by the spectral Fourier Galerkin method and for each system, error estimates for the semidiscrete approximation are proved. The rest of the paper is concerned with the study of existence and the numerical simulation of some issues of the dynamics of solitary-wave solutions. Standard theories are used to derive several results of existence of classical and generalized solitary waves, depending on the parameters of the models. A numerical procedure is used to generate numerically approximations of solitary waves. These are taken as initial conditions in a computational study of the dynamics of the solitary waves, both classical and generalized. To this end, the spectral semidiscretizations of the periodic initial-value problem for the systems are numerically integrated by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta-composition method based on the implicit midpoint rule. The fully discrete scheme is then used to approximate the evolution of perturbations of computed solitary wave profiles, and to study computationally the collisions of solitary waves as well as the resolution of initial data into trains of solitary waves.

Abstract:The theory of internal waves between two layers of immiscible fluids is important both for its applications in oceanography and engineering, and as a source of interesting mathematical model equations that exhibit nonlinearity and dispersion. A Boussinesq system for two-way propagation of interfacial waves in a rigid lid configuration is derived. In most cases, the nonlinearity is quadratic. However, when the square of the depth ratio is close to the density ratio, the coefficients of the quadratic nonlinearities become small and cubic nonlinearities must be considered. The propagation as well as the collision of solitary waves and/or fronts is studied numerically.

Abstract:Boussinesq-type wave equations involve nonlinearities and dispersion. In this paper a Boussinesq-type equation with amplitude-dependent nonlinearities is presented. Such a model was proposed by Heimburg and Jackson (2005) for describing longitudinal waves in biomembranes and later improved by Engelbrecht et al. (2015) taking into account the microinertia of a biomembrane. The steady solution in the form of a solitary wave is derived and the influence of nonlinear and dispersive terms over a large range of possible sets of coefficients demonstrated. The solutions emerging from arbitrary initial inputs are found using the numerical simulation. The properties of emerging trains of solitary waves waves are analysed. Finally, the interaction of solitary waves which satisfy the governing equation is studied. The interaction process is not fully elastic and after several interactions radiation effects may be significant. This means that for the present case the solitary waves are not solitons in the strict mathematical sense. However, like in other cases known in solid mechanics, such solutions may be conditionally called solitons.

Abstract:A new type Boussinesq model is proposed and applied for wave propagation in a wave flume of uniform depth and over a submerged bar with current present or absent, respectively. Firstly, for the propagation of monochromatic incident wave with current absent, the Boussinesq model is tested in its complete form, and in a form without the introduction of utility velocity variables. It is validated that the introduction of utility velocity variables can improve the characteristics of velocity field, dispersion and nonlinearity. Both versions of the Boussinesq models are of higher accuracy than the fully-nonlinear fourth-order model, which is one of the best forms among the existing traditional Boussinesq models that do not incorporate breaking mechanism in one dimension. Secondly, the Boussinesq model in its complete form is applied to simulating the propagation of bichromatic incident waves with current present or absent, respectively, and the modeled results are compared to the analytical ones or the experimental ones. The modeled results are reasonable in the case of inputting bichromatic incident waves with the strong opposing current present.
