Abstract:In order to improve radar's ability to detect and track targets under countermeasures, it is of great significance to analyze anti-interference. The traditional polarization anti-interference has a poor effect on the variable polarization interference with the same frequency and main lobe as that of radar, since it needs to utilize the interference signals without target for asynchronous estimation. Aiming at this problem, this paper puts forward a Synchronous Method (SM) to suppress the variable polarization interference for the first time. Specifically, for the horizontal/vertical dual-receiving polarization radar, we first analyze its polarization invariant in the virtual variable polarization reception, and propose the Golden Section Method to estimate the interference polarization with a fewer calculation complexity. Then, the Cosine Symmetry Method is proposed by the variable polarization observation of coherent accumulation, which replaces the Least Square Method to estimate the target scattering matrix. Subsequently, the Generalized Squint Projection Transformation is proposed to realize the coherent accumulation of target signals under the variable polarization interference, which can effectively resolve the problem of amplitude loss and noise influence in coherent accumulation. Finally,baesd on these three steps, SM is constructed and its effectiveness is verified by simulation, which shows a potential engineering application value.

Abstract:As one of the topical research area in the field of radar, polarimetric signal processing techniques gradually receive the attention of scholars worldwide and have been widely applied in various fields. The basis of polarimetric signal processing is to acquire polarization information. In this paper, the research statuses of several relevant key aspects are reviewed, including polarization information acquisition, polarization diversity and coding, polarization anti-interference/clutter, polarization detection, and classification and identification of targets. Finally, the problems faced by radar polarimetry techniques are concluded, and the prospects of future development of the techniques are discussed.
Research on Polarization Cancellation of Nonstationary Ionosphere Clutter in Hf Radar System

Abstract:Oblique projection polarization filter (OPPF) can be applied as an effective approach for interference cancellation in high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) and other systems. In order to suppress the nonstationary ionosphere clutter further, a novel OPPF based clutter suppressing scheme is proposed in this paper. The polarization and nonstationary characteristic of the clutter are taken into account in the algorithms referred to as range-Doppler domain polarization suppression (RDDPS) and the range-time domain polarization suppression (RTDPS) method, respectively. The RDDPS is designed for weak ionosphere clutter and implemented in the range-Doppler domain directly, whereas the RTDPS algorithm is designed to suppress the powerful ionosphere clutter with a multisegment estimation and suppression scheme. About 15–23 dB signal to interference ratio (SIR) improvement can be excepted when using the proposed method, whereas the targets can be more easily detected in the range-Doppler map. Experimental results demonstrate that the scheme proposed is effective for nonstationary ionosphere clutter and is proven to be a practical interference cancellation technique for HFSWR.

Abstract:Target detection using radar has important applications in military and civilian fields. Aimed at targets containing interference, radar polarimetry can facilitate discrimination between the target and interference. Since existing methods require the utilization of interference signals without targets in advance, they have a poor effect on interference with variable polarization. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel synchronous method to estimate the parameters of interference. First, we introduce a definition of the pulse compression signal-to-noise ratio, and prove that it is the polarization invariant in the virtual polarization adaptation. Then, for signals containing a target, interference, and noise, we propose a novel synchronous estimation method. Subsequently, we propose the two-dimensional golden selected method to further optimize the method with minimum calculation, and prove that the method presented in this paper is convergent and globally optimal. Finally, we analyze the presented method from three aspects: robustness, complexity, and applicability; the results of which demonstrate the efficacy of the method presented in this paper.

Abstract:In addition to the information associated with the time,frequency and spatial domains,the information in polarization domain should also be used to improve the detection capability of radar systems.The traditional methods of polarization filtering are not suitable for the detection of targets in an environment containing strong jamming because the signal/jamming ratio is usually every low and the polarization state of the jamming is unknown or distributed.In this paper,specificallym for the strong jamming environment,a new adaptive filtering algorithm in polarization domain using criterion of Linear Constraint Minimum Variance(LCMV) is proposed.The signal is optimized according to the variable polarization of antenna.For the realization of algorithm and the adaption to the fast varying interference,a recursion polarization filtering algorithm is derived which can adapt to the polarization states of the jamming at sampling speed.Simulations show the valiclity of that method.

Abstract:For high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR), the unwanted radio wave originated from the ionosphere is commonly called ionospheric clutter. Its presence seriously affects the performance of the HFSWR and extremely degrades the radar capability to detect target over long distances. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a two-step method for ionospheric clutter mitigation with two-dimensional dual-polarized received array. The proposed method first performs parameter estimation of the clutter, and then gives a polarimetric-adaptive-based oblique projection filter (PAB-OPF) to suppress the clutter. In the first step, due to the fact that vertically and horizontally polarized antennas are at different array elements for reducing mutual coupling and hardware cost, 2-D DOAs are estimated to give phase compensation for polarization phase delay estimation. In the second step, the PAB-OPF is proposed to eliminate phase inconsistency by matching different polarization phase delays for different vertically polarized antennas, and then to suppress the clutter efficiently in space-polarization domain. Error analysis and computational complexity of the proposed method are derived. Experimental results are shown to illustrate the superiority of the proposed method for ionospheric clutter suppression.

Abstract:In order to improve the performances of the modern guidance radars in electronic warfares,this paper proposes a kind of radar system with frequency and polarization agility and discusses the corresponding signal processing technique.The theorem and structure of mono-pulse radar with polarization agility are discussed,two kinds of transmitted signals with frequency and polarization agility are introduced and the full polarization echo signal model is established based on the polarization scattering theory of a radar target.In the signal processing,the echo signal is orthogonally demodulated and sampled;the effective target detection is realized through the polarization parameter estimation of the target and interferences and polarization matching calculation;the target angle measurement and tracking using the reliable target signal data is finished.The compatibility of the polarization agility and frequency agility is discussed in this paper.The results of theoretical analysis and simulation experiment reveal that the polarization agility technique can improve the anti-jamming ability of the traditional frequency agility radar when the target can be distinguished from the interferences in the polarization domain.

Abstract:This study focuses on the problem of deception jamming suppression for a radar system and an effective spatial-polarisational filter strategy is outlined based on the spatial and polarisational parameter joint estimates. It can make the false target filtered effectively and the desired target remained with an improved signal-to-jammer-noise ratio. In this scheme, the trilinear decomposition model is first employed to obtain paired 2D direction of arrive and polarisation parameter joint estimates of the target and jammer. Then a spatial-polarisational oblique projection filter operator based on the joint estimates is constructed and utilised to project the received mixed return of radar onto to the target echo sublinear space so as to suppress the jamming. Meanwhile, the complexity of the above jamming suppression algorithm is presented and the working flow of a radar system equipped with a polarisation sensitive array for countering the deception jammer is also presented. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The radar targets can be detected by polarization information when they are difficult to be distinguished from clutter or interference environment by information derived from time and frequency and spatial domains. The traditional methods of polarization filtering are not suitable for the detection of targets in an environment containing strong jams because the signal to interference ratio (SIR) is usually every small and the polarization state of the jam is unknown or distributed continuously. This paper proposes a novel algorithm of adaptive polarization filtering based on the principle of linear constraint minimum variance (LCMV), which achieves the optimal receive of signal by adopting the variable polarization of antenna. For the realization of algorithm and the adaptive fast varying interference, a recursion polarization filtering algorithm is given which can adapt the polarization states of the jam at sampling speed. Simulations are shown and results are in good agreement with theoretical analysis

Abstract:With the advantage of compact, low cost and high resolution, the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) radar equipped in airborne or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been well applied to small-scale remote sensing measurements. To make laboratory experiment, our Key Laboratory of Wave Scattering and Remote Sensing Information (KLWSRSI) has developed a fully polarimetric FM-CW synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. This system can be applied to analysis and demonstration of targets scattering mechanism and polarimetric radar imaging.
Polarization filtering based interference suppressions for cooperative radar sensor network

Abstract:The radar members are likely to interfere with each other if their waveforms and polarized states are not orthogonal in radar sensor network (RSN). In this paper, we propose the oblique projection polarization filtering (OPPF) based interference suppressions for RSN where each radar member is equipped with the orthogonally dual-polarized antenna (ODPA). In our discussed cooperative environment, under which radar members share their polarized states, members radiate EM waves using the same waveform but different polarized states, however, their polarized states are not needed to be orthogonal. Doppler-Shift and its uncertainty are not involved due to the independence from the polarized state, which makes the proposed method simple and effective. The results demonstrate that, after passing through the proposed OPPF scheme, each radar member can effectively suppress the echoes from the others while keep its own amplitude and phase unchanged, which improves the target detection performance of the RSN. Theoretical analysis is done, and the simulation results are illustrated, both showing the proposed method suitable for suppressing interferences for RSN. ©2010 IEEE.

In the present work, the optimal polarization theory is extended to the case of multistatic radar. Abstract:Most conventional circular arrays are of scalar with identical antenna elements for sensing vertically polarized signals with low grazing angles. For some applications, it is desired to sense signals with high elevation angles and their polarizations. In this study, vector circular arrays are proposed for estimating direction of arrival (DOA) and polarization of signals with relatively high elevation angles and arbitrary linear polarization. In this study, high resolution DOA approaches are adopted and studied. The system concepts, mathematical formulation, and error analysis results are presented to show this new vector circular array system and its effectiveness.

Abstract:Blanketing jamming is widely used in electronic jamming war, whereas the existing electronic countermeasures maybe invalided in the future. By using the spatial polarization characteristic (SPC) modulation effect on jamming signal as antenna scanning, a novel side-lobe blanketing jamming suppression method is proposed. It processed the sample data by using pre-knowledge of jamming direction, SPC, then the orthogonal polarized component and polarization states of receiving signal can be estimated. The polarization filtering is designed to achieve the objective of suppressing jamming. The novel method enables single polarized radar own anti-jamming ability in polarization domain, where the suppression performance can reach to 20dB. The validity has been proved by simulation experiment.

Abstract:The interferences coming from the radar members degrade the detection and recognition performance of the radar sensor networks (RSNs) if the waveforms of the radar members are nonorthogonal. In this paper, we analyze the interferences by exploring the polarization information of the electromagnetic (EM) waves. Then, we propose the oblique projection polarization filtering- (OPPF-) based scheme to suppress the interferences while keeping the amplitude and phase of its own return in RSNs, even if the polarized states of the radar members are not orthogonal. We consider the cooperative RSNs environment where the polarization information of each radar member is known to all. The proposed method uses all radar members' polarization information to establish the corresponding filtering operator. The Doppler-shift and its uncertainty are independent of the polarization information, which contributes that the interferences can be suppressed without the utilization of the spatial, the temporal, the frequency, the time-delay and the Doppler-shift information. Theoretical analysis and the mathematical deduction show that the proposed scheme is a valid and simple implementation. Simulation results also demonstrate that this method can obtain a good filtering performance when dealing with the problem of interference suppressions for RSNs.

Abstract:A method of suppressing HF sky-wave interference in ground wave OTH radar is put forward, in which three dimension orthogonally polarized receiving antennas are utilized. The new technique can suppress the sky-wave interference which can't be handled in two dimension orthogonal polarization filter. In order to further improve the interference suppression ability, an optimum weighting method is given. It is proved in theory that the weighting method can effectively decrease polarization loss, increase output SINR and enlarge interference suppression area in polarization domain and space domain.

Abstract:The nonlinear polarization-vector translation method proposed by A.J.Poelman can effectively decrease the number of notches of multinotch polarization filter,which makes the real-time processing of the multinotch polarization filter possible.But the algorithm is only described by geometrical parameters—ellipticity ratio and orientation angle that define the polarization ellipse.For its application in other situations, expression of the nonlinear PVT by electric parameters—amplitude polarization parameter and phase polarization parameter that define the electric field components is analyzed. This expression has all properties of the nonlinear PVT expressed by geometrical parameters and can be used in the suppression of interference and clutter in radar system.A simulation of sky-wave interference suppression in HF ground wave radar system is realized to explain its application in reality.

Abstract:This paper proposes a reduced-dimension polarization-space-time adaptive processing (RD-PSTAP) algorithm for airborne conformal array (CFA) radar to achieve better clutter suppression performance at lower computational complexities. Firstly, we take polarization information into signal modeling. Subsequently, the dimension reduction matrix is derived based on the generalized sidelobe cancellation (GSC) structure, which incorporates the polarization information of the target and clutter into constructing the main channel and auxiliary channels, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared with the conventional RD algorithm.

Abstract:Due to the rapid increase in 76 GHz automotive spectrum use in recent years, wireless interference is becoming a legitimate area of concern. However, the recent rise in interest of automated vehicles (AVs) has also spurred new growth and adoption of low frequency vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications in and around the 5.8 GHz unlicensed bands, opening the possibility for communications spectrum reuse in the form of joint radar-communications (JRC). In this work, we present a low frequency 5.9 GHz side-looking polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for automotive use, utilizing a ranging waveform in a common low frequency V2X communications band. A synthetic aperture technique is employed to address the angular resolution concerns commonly associated with radars at lower frequencies. Three side-looking fully polarimetric SAR images in various urban scenes are presented and discussed to highlight the unique opportunities for landmark inference afforded through measurement of co- and cross-polarized scattering.
