Abstract:The objective of this study is to propose an intelligent methodology for efficiently optimizing the injection molding parameters when multiple constraints and multiple objectives are involved. Multiple objective functions reflecting the product quality, manufacturing cost and molding efficiency were constructed for the optimization model of injection molding parameters while multiple constraint functions reflecting the requirements of clients and the restrictions in the capacity of injection molding machines were established as well. A novel methodology integrating variable complexity methods (VCMs), constrained non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm (CNSGA), back propagation neural networks (BPNNs) and Moldflow analyses was put forward to locate the Pareto optimal solutions to the constrained multiobjective optimization problem. The VCMs enabled both the knowledge-based simplification of the optimization model and the variable-precision flow analyses of different injection molding parameter schemes. The Moldflow analyses were applied to collect the precise sample data for developing BPNNs and to fine-tune the Pareto-optimal solutions after the CNSGA-based optimization while the approximate BPNNs were utilized to efficiently compute the fitness of every individual during the evolution of CNSGA. The case study of optimizing the mold and process parameters for manufacturing mice with a compound-cavity mold demonstrated the feasibility and intelligence of proposed methodology.

Abstract:The paper presents a hybrid strategy in a soft computing paradigm for the optimization of the low-pressure die casting process. Casting process parameters, such as various parts temperatures of die, pouring temperature are considered. The hybrid strategy combines numerical simulation software, a genetic algorithm and a multilayer neural network to optimize the process parameters. An approximate analysis model is developed using a BP neural network in order to avoid the expensive computation resulting from the numerical simulation software. According to the characteristic of the optimization problem, a real-code genetic algorithm is applied to solve the optimization model. The effectiveness of the improved strategy is shown by an A356 automotive wheel.

Abstract:The uncertainties of design variables, noise parameters, and metamodel are important factors in simulation-based robust design optimization. Most conventional metamodel construction methods only consider one or two uncertainties. In this paper, a new surrogate modeling method simultaneously measuring all the uncertainties is proposed for simulation-based robust design optimization of complex product. The effect of metamodel uncertainty on product performance uncertainty is quantified through uncertainty propagation analysis among design variables uncertainty, noise parameters uncertainty, metamodel uncertainty, and performance uncertainty. Then, the sampling points are selected and the metamodel is constructed based on the predictive interval of product performance and mean square error of the Kriging metamodel. The constructed metamodel is applied to robust design optimization considering multiple uncertainties. Results of two mathematical examples show that the proposed metamodel considering multiple uncertainties increases the result accuracy of robust design optimization. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to robust design optimization of a heat exchanger, and the total heat transfer rate is enhanced under uncertainties of fin structural parameters, operation conditions parameters and simulation metamodel.

Abstract:A neural network is established based on available samples which is taken as surrogate model to provide approximate objective value by replacing time-consuming simulation evaluation. Based on surrogate model, GA is applied to search optimal solution. Moreover, samples choosing according to problem information and multiple-(model) methods are discussed to enhance the reliability and consistence of optimization results. Numerical simulation based on typical pressure vessel design problem demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Simulation optimization aims at determining the best values of input parameters, while the analytical objective function and constraints are not explicitly known in terms of design variables and their values only can be estimated by complicated analysis or time-consuming simulation. In this paper, a hybrid genetic algorithm–neural network strategy (GA–NN) is proposed for such kind of optimization problems. The good approximation performance of neural network (NN) and the effective and robust evolutionary searching ability of genetic algorithm (GA) are applied in hybrid sense, where NNs are employed in predicting the objective value, and GA is adopted in searching optimal designs based on the predicted fitness values. Numerical simulation results and comparisons based on a well-known pressure vessel design problem demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework, and much better results are achieved than some existed literature results.

Abstract:Nuclear power has garnered significant attention as a clean energy resource in expediting carbon peaking and achieving carbon neutrality. It contributes to sustainable economic growth while addressing national energy security concerns. As one of the most crucial components, pressurized water reactors require improvements in several key aspects, including strengthening the natural circulation capacity, increasing the reactor power, and reducing the reactor volume. However, the volume of pressurized water reactors is usually positively correlated with their power. Increasing the reactor power results in an expansion of its volume, which poses challenges for the reactor layout and also requires additional investment. Hence, in order to reduce the reactor volume while meeting its performance requirements, this study introduces a novel design optimization approach utilizing an improved quantum fish swarm algorithm and intuitionistic linguistic decision-making. Firstly, a nonlinear mathematical model for volume optimization of the steam generator (SG) and pressurizer (PR) is constructed. Then, the improved quantum fish swarm algorithm is proposed to obtain volume optimization alternatives for the SG and PR. Quantum computation strategies are introduced to enhance the global optimization ability and population diversity. Additionally, the vision range and step size of the quantum fish swarm are adjusted adaptively to improve the optimization precision. To further accelerate the algorithm convergence, the prospect-elimination strategy is built. Last but not least, the intuitionistic linguistic decision-making is presented to gain the optimal design alternative by taking four characteristics into account, namely, the fuzziness and hesitancy of evaluation information, the consensus reaching process, the bounded rationality of decision-making behaviors, and the complementarity, independence and redundancy among nuclear evaluation criteria. A case study on the SG and PR design optimization is implemented to demonstrate the reliability and reasonability of the proposed approach.

The simulation optimization problems are classified according to the underlying structure of decision variables (discrete or continuous). And some important techniques for simulation optimization are discussed in detail, including their principles, implementation procedures, advantages and disadvantages, and applications. The future research directions are also provided in this paper.

Abstract:A simulation-based optimization framework is proposed in this paper to solve process industry scheduling problem under demand and yield uncertainties.The scheduling scheme consists of processing capacities and operation modes of product units as well as separator parameters.A scheduling simulation model with probability distribution of demand and yield has been established.The optimal scheduling orders are obtained through multi-population genetic algorithm based on this model.Robustness and effectiveness are demonstrated by simulation result of a real-world refinery.

Abstract:The pressurized reservoir is a closed hydraulic tank which plays a significant role in enhancing the capabilities of hydraulic driven robotics. The spring pressurized reservoir adopted in this paper requires comprehensive performance, such as weight, size, fluid volume, and pressure, which is hard to balance. A novel interactive multi-objective optimization approach, the feasible space tightening method, is proposed, which is efficient in solving complicated engineering design problems where multiple objectives are determined by multiple design variables. This method provides sufficient information to the designer by visualizing the performance trends within the feasible space as well as its relationship with the design variables. A step towards the final solution could be made by raising the threshold on performance indicators interactively, so that the feasible space is reduced and the remaining solutions are more preferred by the designer. With the help of this new method, the preferred solution of a spring pressurized reservoir is found. Practicability and efficiency are demonstrated in the optimal design process, where the solution is determined within four rounds of interaction between the designer and the optimization program. Tests on the designed prototype show good results.

Abstract:A high fidelity fluid-structure interaction simulation may require many days to run, on hundreds of cores. This poses a serious burden, both in terms of time and economic considerations, when repetitions of such simulations may be required (e.g. for the purpose of design optimization). In this paper we present strategies based on (constrained) Bayesian optimization (BO) to alleviate this burden. BO is a numerical optimization technique based on Gaussian processes (GP) that is able to efficiently (with minimal calls to the expensive FSI models) converge towards some globally working admissible design, as gauged using a black box objective function. In this study we present a principled design evolution that moves from FSI model verification, through a series of Bridge Simulations (bringing the verification case incrementally closer to the application), in order that we may identify material properties for an underwater, unmanned, autonomous vehicle (UUAV) sail plane. We are able to achieve fast convergence towards an working admissible design, using a small number of FSI simulations (a dozen at most), even when selecting over several design parameters, and while respecting optimization constraints.

Abstract:This research concerns a type of configuration optimization problems frequently encountered in engineering design and manufacturing, where the envelope volume in space occupied by a number of components needs to be minimized along with other objectives such as minimizing connective lines between the components under various constraints. Since in practical applications the objectives and constraints are usually complex, the formulation of computationally tractable optimization becomes difficult. Moreover, unlike conventional multi-objective optimization problems, such configuration problems usually comes with a number of demanding constraints that are hard to satisfy, which results in the critical challenge of balancing solution feasibility with optimality. In this research, we first present the mathematical formulation for a representative problem of configuration optimization with multiple hard constraints, and then develop two versions of an enhanced multi-objective simulated annealing approach, referred to as MOSA/R, to solve this problem. To facilitate the optimization computationally, in MOSA/R, a versatile re-seed scheme that allows biased search while avoiding pre-mature convergence is designed. Our case study indicates that the new algorithm yields significantly improved performance towards both constrained benchmark tests and constrained configuration optimization problem. The configuration optimization framework developed can benefit both existing design/manufacturing practices and future additive manufacturing.

Abstract:This paper proposes an efficient optimization method for the stacking sequence of composite pressure vessels based on the joint application of finite element analysis (FEA), artificial neural network (ANN), and genetic algorithm (GA). The composite pressure vessel has many winding layers and varied angles, and the stacking sequence of the composite pressure vessel affects its performance. It is essential to carry out the optimal design of the stacking sequence. The experimental cost for optimal design of composite pressure vessels is high, and numerical simulation is time-consuming. ANN is used to predict the fiber direction stress of composite pressure vessels, which replaces FEA in the optimization process of GA effectively. In addition, the optimization efficiency of the optimization method proposed in this paper can be improved significantly when the neural network model is employed. The optimization results show that the peak stress in the fiber direction can be reduced by 37.3% with the design burst pressure. The burst pressure of the composite pressure vessel can be increased by 13.4% by optimizing the stacking sequence of composite pressure vessels while keeping the number of plies and the winding angle unchanged. The results imply that the work undertaken in this paper is of great significance for the improvement of the safety performance of composite pressure vessels.

Abstract:Composite pressure vessels have the characteristics of light weight, corrosion resistance, good sealing, and high reliability, and have been widely used in military and civilian applications. With the widespread use of composite pressure vessels today, determining how to conduct scientific research and correct analysis becomes very important. With the continuous development of computer technology and the continuous improvement of finite element algorithms, the numerical calculation method has become an important method for studying composite pressure vessels. In this paper, the finite element analysis of filament wound composite pressure vessels is carried out by means of ANSYS and OpenSees. The semi-analytical method is used to optimize the design with the help of the Python tool. The parametric language is used to design different fiber layer schemes. The optimal fiber layer scheme is obtained by Nelder-Mead optimization function optimization. The optimal angle and thickness obtained after multiple iterations are 9.96875° and 0.03325 m, respectively.

Abstract:A surrogate-based optimization method is proposed for simultaneous synthesis.An ANN-based surrogate model is established for process unit modeling.An enhanced MINLP model is introduced to address the variable HEN.Two examples are studied to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.Heat-integrated process synthesis is fundamental to achieve higher energy efficiency. The well-known sequential-conceptual methods have been widely adopted to solve the synthesis problem in a hierarchical manner. However, the natural hierarchy fails to consider complex interactions between the unit operation and the heat integration. To address this issue, a surrogate-based optimization framework is proposed for simultaneous synthesis of chemical process and heat exchanger network. An artificial neural network (ANN)-based surrogate model, derived from the simulation data generated via rigorous mechanism modelling approach, is established for process units to replace their complex realistic models. With surrogate model formulation incorporated into heat integration, an enhanced transshipment-based mixed integer nonlinear programming model is introduced to synthesize heat exchanger network with variable flowrates and temperatures, aiming at the maximized annual profit. Abstract:A construction method of aerodynamics optimization system for wing/engine integrated design based on Navier-Stokes equations is proposed in present paper. Four conflicts in the current methodology of optimization system are considered as the main problems for engineering applicability. They are the conflicts between speed and accuracy, human experience and automatization of optimization, component design and full configuration design, local vs. global optimization methods. Sing-point and double-point optimizations of wing/engine integrated design for Chinese large civil aircraft C919 are carried out with the optimization system. A shock-free design is got by single-point optimization, and weak shock design is brought out by double-point optimization. The comparisons of the designs show that, double-point optimization is more engineering applicable.

Abstract:In the structural and multiphysical design of engineering structures, various functional components with fixed shapes are embedded in a host structure, which poses considerable difficulties in obtaining the optimal structure performance by the simultaneous design of the component layout and structural topology. This study proposes a surrogate-based optimization strategy for the integrated design of component layout and structural topology. In the proposed optimization framework, a multi-component layout is described with a movable material field function by several positional parameters, and the host structure topology is represented by another material field function. The dimension of the topology optimization problem (i.e., the number of design variables) drastically reduces with the material field series-expansion method, while still providing a clear and smooth structural boundary description. Then, a multi-material interpolation model is suggested to couple the host structure and functional components. To avoid the derivation of the sensitivities for complex structural responses and to alleviate the solution difficulty due to the problem's multiple local solution features, a surrogate-based algorithm based on the sequential Kriging surrogate model is employed to solve the optimization problem. Several numerical examples, including mechanics and electromagnetics design problems, are presented to verify the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:An improved annealing simulation method is discussed with the focus on the optimization design problems with continuous variables, discrete variables, hybrid discrete variables and Large-scale TSP. This method not only has memory function and complementary search process but also applies an innovative neighborhood structure to improve the searching ability. Besides, it provides the solution to discretize the discrete variable by average method. The program compiled in VC++ environment achieves the technology to display the computational progress on real-time. Therefore, it is highly intuitive. The results of some practical computational examples show that the improved simulated annealing method is quite efficient and reliable in solving this several kinds of problems, and also it has quite good practicability. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Simulation is an established tool for predicting and evaluating the performance of complex stochastic systems that are analytically intractable. Recent research in simulation optimization and explosive growth in computing power have made it feasible to use simulations to optimize the design and operations of systems directly. Concurrently, ubiquitous sensing, pervasive computing, and unprecedented systems interconnectivity have ushered in a new era of industrialization (the so-called Industrial 4.0/Industrial Internet). In this article, we argue that simulation optimization is a decision-making tool that can be applied to many scenarios to tremendous effect. By capitalizing on an unprecedented integration of sensing, computing, and control, simulation optimization provides the “smart brain” required to drastically improve the efficiency of industrial systems. We explore the potential of simulation optimization and discuss how simulation optimization can be applied, with an emphasis on the recent development of multi-fidelity/multi-scale simulation optimization.
