Abstract:With the rapid scale growing of VLSI circuits, simulation speed and efficiency of CAD tool SPICE have turned out to be a bottleneck Real VLSI circuit design simulation becomes unbearably time-consuming and urgent is the need to increase its efficiency. The emergence and thriving of multi-core systems in recent years offer a promising solution strategy to this problem. Circuit partition is required to these strategies, but traditional partition algorithms encounter difficulties when facing VLSI circuits for parallel simulation. This paper presents an efficient circuit partition algorithm specially designed for VLSI circuit partition and parallel simulation. The algorithm is established on recognizing DCCB and SCC. Our algorithm shows preferable solution quality and speedup for real experimental circuit designs compared with traditional ones.(1)

Abstract:With the wide application of System-on-Chip in embedded system design, the hardware-software partitioning turns from a traditional bipartition problem to a multi-way partitioning problem. To deal with this issue, an abstract template of the processing element network connecting with communication channels is proposed for modeling multiple processing module architecture. Simulated annealing and heuristic scheduling algorithms are employed to determine the multi-way hardware-software partition and estimate the system performance and cost respectively. Preliminary experiments show that the proposed algorithm can make reasonable choice among different architectures for the optimization of system performance and cost.

Abstract:Embedded Multi-core system on a chip with reconfigurable hardware is efficient and flexible.Hardware /software task partitioning and scheduling are critical to minimization of the overall run-time of applications on such a platform.A high performance algorithm combining HW /SW task partitioning and scheduling is proposed in this paper.The algorithm can produce both partition results and schedule results at the same time.The time complexity of the proposed algorithm is O(V(E + V) + V2logV + PVlogV).The experimental results show the feasibility and effectivity of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Very long instruction word (VLIW) processors are generally implemented as clustered architectures in order to reduce delay, area and power when function units increase. However, a side effect of clustered architectures is processor performance degradation, due to additional latency and copy operations from data transfers between these clusters. Therefore, appropriate scheduling algorithms must be applied to overcome this. This paper presents a new register-file-connectivity clustered VLIW (RFCC-VLIW) architecture, in which a global register file is used to transfer data between clusters. Using the global register file, latency and copy operations can be eliminated. Additionally, the paper presents a scheduling algorithm for the RFCC-VLIW architecture. The two-dimension force-directed algorithm can assign instructions evenly to all clusters and reduce usage of ports and global registers. Experimental results show our algorithm outperforms other scheduling algorithms for clustered VLIW when targeted toward RFCC-VLIW architectures.

Abstract:When IC technology scaled down to deep submicron range, wire delay gradually dominates circuit performance, traditional high level synthesis methods can no longer meet the requirement for circuit design. The influence of architectures on synthesis methods is discussed, and a clustered register transfer level architecture as object architecture is presented. A new design flow is summarized and a key algorithm is designed for the new architecture. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the new method.

Abstract:Generally VLIW(Very Long Instruction Word) processors are implemented as bus-connectivity clustered architecture,in which the function units in a cluster only access the corresponding local registers and different clusters are connected by buses.This architecture can avoid aggressive growing of delay,area and power in full-connectivity VLIW processors when function units increase.However,performance degradation is induced by its copy operations and latency of communications between clusters.This paper presents a new clustered architecture,in which a register file is used to connect all the clusters so as to turn copy and latency away.This paper also gives instruction scheduling algorithm to improve the performance.The experimental results indicate that this new architecture under the help of this scheduling algorithm shows only 13% performance degradation and little code size increase in average compared with those of fully connectivity VLIW architecture,which prevails that of bus-connectivity clustered VLIW architecture.

Abstract:This work presents a novel approach for improving the energy consumption for instruction scheduling of clustered VLIW architectures. The proposed scheme is based on a preliminary cluster assignment phase implemented through partitioning and analyzing of Data Dependence Graph (DDG) and a scheduling phase using different heuristics to find an optimized schedule. The preliminary cluster assign scheme is shown to be very effective due to its global view of the whole DDG. We have implemented and evaluated the proposed scheme with UTDSP benchmarks. Results show a significant reduction in energy consumption when compared with previously proposed techniques, while also maintaining a high performance level. Energy consumption reductions are up to 41%, with average energy consumption improving ranging from 26% (2-Cluster) to 30% (4-Cluster). While performance speedup can up to 33% compared with result of list scheduling, with average speedup ranging from 25% (2-Cluster) to 30% (4-Cluster).

Abstract:The sparse matrix solver has become the bottleneck in a Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis circuit simulator. It is difficult to parallelize the sparse matrix solver because of the high data dependence during the numerical LU factorization. In this brief, a parallel LU factorization algorithm is developed on shared-memory computers with multicore central processing units, based on KLU algorithms. An Elimination Scheduler (EScheduler) is proposed to represent the data dependence during the LU factorization. Based on the EScheduler, the parallel tasks are scheduled in two modes to achieve a high level of concurrence, i.e., cluster mode and pipeline mode. The experimental results on 26 circuit matrices reveal that the developed algorithm can achieve speedup of 1.18-4.55x (on geometric average), as compared with KLU, with 1-8 threads. The result analysis indicates that for different data dependence, different parallel strategies should be dynamically selected to obtain optimal performance.

Abstract:This work presents an approach for reducing the energy consumption for instruction scheduling of clustered VLIW architectures. Performance speedup can up to 65% compared with result of list scheduling, with average speedup ranging from 40.85% to 41.71%.

Abstract:An algorithm is presented for obtaining placements of cell-based very large scale integrated circuits, subject to timing constraints based on table-lookup model. A new timing delay model based on some delay tables of fabricators is first simplified and deduced; then it is formulated as a constrained programming problem using the new timing delay model. The approach combines the well-known quadratic placement with bottom-up clustering, as well as the slicing partitioning strategy, which has been tested on a set of sample circuits from industry and the results obtained show that it is very promising.

Abstract:Achieving optimal throughput by extracting parallelism in behavioral synthesis often exaggerates memory bottleneck issues. Data partitioning is an important technique for increasing memory bandwidth by scheduling multiple simultaneous memory accesses to different memory banks. In this paper we present a vertical memory partitioning and scheduling algorithm that can generate a valid partition scheme for arbitrary affine memory inputs. It does this by arranging non-conflicting memory accesses across the border of loop iterations. A mixed memory partitioning and scheduling algorithm is also proposed to combine the advantages of the vertical and other state-of-art algorithms. A set of theorems is provided as criteria for selecting a valid partitioning scheme. This is followed by an optimal and scalable memory scheduling algorithm. By utilizing the property of constant strides between memory addresses in successive loop iterations, an address translation optimization technique for an arbitrary partition factor is proposed to improve performance, area and energy efficiency. Experimental results show that on a set of real-world medical image processing kernels, the proposed mixed algorithm with address translation optimization can gain speed-up, area reduction and power savings of 15.8%, 36% and 32.4% respectively, compared to the state-of-art memory partitioning algorithm.

Abstract:Since most System-on-Chips (SoCs) consist of heterogeneous IP core(s), application-specific Network on Chip (NoC) architectures are appropriate to meet the design requirements. The energy and performance optimization in the NoC design will continue to be the main design goal in nanoscale technologies. In this paper, we present a new hierarchal partitioning approach considering not only the reduction of wire length among cores, but also the optimization of switching power consumption subject to performance constraints. The experimental results on different benchmarks showed that our NoC topology synthesis algorithm can effectively save power and improve performance.

Abstract:To ensure wafer quality, engineers have to impose wafer residency time constraints and chamber cleaning operations on cluster tools; this has been widely used in semiconductor manufacturing. Wafer residency time constraints and chamber cleaning operations make the scheduling problem of cluster tools more challenging. This work aims to solve such a scheduling problem for single-arm cluster tools and presents a novel method based on the use of virtual wafers. Under a one-cyclic schedule obtained for single-arm cluster tools without chamber cleaning requirements, virtual wafers are loaded into the tool such that when a process module (PM) processes virtual wafers, a chamber cleaning operation is performed in practice. The key to solve this scheduling problem is to find a wafer loading sequence with the highest performance in terms of cycle time. With this idea, this work constructs a genetic algorithm to search for such a solution. Since the obtained solution is a periodical wafer loading sequence based on a one-wafer cyclic schedule, it can be easily implemented. Therefore, this work has high practical value to numerous semiconductor manufacturers. Experiments were performed to show the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method.
A Novel Algorithm for Circuit Partitioning at Transistor Level

Abstract:As the size of VLSI circuits keeps growing, the quality of circuit partitioning for parallel simulation is becoming increasingly crucial. In view of the fact that the present algorithms cannot guarantee the size balance and minimize the cut-signals among partitions simultaneously, a novel algorithm for circuit partitioning at transistor level is presented. The proposed algorithm first conducts clustering procedure to obtain a good initial partition result, and then makes an adjustment procedure to achieve well-balanced partitions with fewer cut-signals. The excellent performance of the new algorithm is demonstrated on several industrial circuits. Compared with the COPART algorithm which is widely used, the size discrepancy among different partitions and the number of cut-signals obtained using the new algorithm decrease by 25% and 18% on average, respectively.

Abstract:Data transferring between clusters degrades the performance of clustered VLIW processors. This paper presents a novel two-dimension forced-directed schedule algorithm for Register-File-Connectivity Clustered Very Long Instruction Word (RFCC-VLIW) processors, in which the force expression varies as the cycle and cluster. Experimental results indicate that the schedule algorithm prevails against other ones for clustered VLIW processors when aiming to RFCC-VLIW architecture.

Abstract:As the electronic systems got more and more complicated,automatic design methods are needed to find the best solution.A design exploration algorithm based on branch-and-bound and list scheduling is proposed.The algorithm has architecture of three stages.At the first and second stage the module selection and sharing schemes are explored by the branch-and-bound method,while the list scheduling method is used to schedule the tasks in the third stage.Multiple module choices for the tasks are considered,and all the module sharing possibilities are fully explored.Several tests have been made for various task graphs of different scales.The performance of this algorithm is compared with those existing methods.The results indicate that for systems of small or medium scale with the list scheduling strategy the proposed algorithm can find the best solution in a short time.

Design Automation for Embedded Systems

Abstract:Hardware/software (HW/SW) partitioning and scheduling are the crucial steps during HW/SW co-design. It has been shown that they are classical combinatorial optimization problems. Due to the possible sequential or concurrent execution of the tasks, HW/SW partitioning and scheduling has become more difficult to solve optimally. In this paper more efficient heuristic algorithms are proposed for the HW/SW partitioning and scheduling. The proposed algorithm partitions a task graph by iteratively moving the task with highest benefit-to-area ratio in higher priority. The benefit-to-area ratio is updated in each iteration step to cater for the task concurrence. The proposed algorithm for task scheduling executes the task lying in hardware-only critical path in higher priority to enhance the task forecast. A large body of experimental results conclusively shows that the proposed heuristic algorithm for partitioning is superior to the latest efficient combinatorial algorithm (Tabu search) cited in this paper. Moreover, the Tabu search for partitioning has been further improved by utilizing the proposed heuristic solution as its initial solution. In addition, the proposed scheduling algorithm obtains the improvements over the most widely used approaches by up to 10% without large increase in running time.

Abstract:Hardware/software partitioning and scheduling are critical to minimizing the overall run-time of applications on reconfigurable computing platform. Traditionally, hardware/software task partitioning and task scheduling are independent. The partition result and scheduling result is not always match, so that the accelerating effect is difficult to be guaranteed. A high performance algorithm combining hardware/software task partitioning with scheduling is proposed. The executive time of tasks, dependent of tasks, communication overhead among tasks, and parallelism of computing resources are comprehensively considered in the algorithm. The algorithm can produce both partition result and schedule result simultaneously. The overhead of the algorithm is similar to traditional scheduling algorithms. The time complexity of the proposed algorithm is O(V2log2V+PVlog2V). Experimental results show the feasibleness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Optimizing Inter-Cluster Data Communications Through Optimized Backward Rescheduling

Abstract:As clustering becoming more essential for embedded computer systems, compilers for clustered systems must carefully assign instructions in the clusters to minimize the inter-cluster data communications which degrade performance and increase power consumption. This work proposed an optimized backward rescheduling process which runs after the traditional scheduling process. The tests show the rescheduling reduces the inter-cluster communications by 44% on average when compared to list scheduling, and reduces the final execution time by 25%. When compared with UAS (unified assign and schedule) algorithm, the inter-cluster communications are reduced by 31% and the execution time by 15%.

Abstract:A filtration method to improve the multi-way hardware/software partitioning algorithm based on abstract architecture template is proposed in this paper, which greatly shortens run time of the full partitioning-scheduling flow. In this method, a filtrating process is added between hardware/software partitioning and scheduling processes. Filtration is performed based on the hardware area pre-estimated. Only a part of partition schemes that meet an appropriate requirement are scheduled. So the workload of scheduling processes is greatly decreased. Experimental results show that the speed of the full partitioning-scheduling flow with filtrating process is perceptibly increased without losing the performance of final results.
